Digital Manga Editions from TOKYOPOP and Zinio

TOKYOPOP and Zinio Announce the Launch of Digital Manga Editions

Dozens of volumes now available to download to your computer

TOKYOPOP, the leader of the global manga revolution, and Zinio, the world's top digital publishing distribution service, today announced a partnership that offers more than fifty volumes of manga, available immediately for digital download to your PC and Mac by visiting www.Zinio.com/tokyopop.

The debut list of titles for sale includes the bestsellers Bizenghast, Dramacon, and Princess Ai; manga-adapted-to-film series such as The Dreaming and Van Von Hunter; the groundbreaking shonen-ai hit Gravitation, and Jim Henson's Return to Labyrinth and Legends of the Dark Crystal. Release dates for future titles, including Min-Woo Hyung's Priest, inspiration for the Spring 2011 3-D film from Sony/Screen Gems, will be announced and made available for digital download soon.

Stu Levy, TOKYOPOP's founder, producer of the upcoming films Priest and The Dreaming and director of Van Von Hunter, each based on the company's manga series, says, "I have always been a strong advocate for digital-in fact, my DNA is made entirely from 0's and 1's. The manga lifestyle is rapidly moving online and we are committed to finding the best experience possible in that medium. Zinio offers the top online reading experience, and their team is committed to providing a 360º accessibility."

For consumers, Zinio enables the ability to shop for, search inside, read, share, and save digital content to your computer. Similar to thumbing through the print edition at a local bookstore, readers of TOKYOPOP digital versions can preview pages of each manga, free of charge.

"More than a decade ago, TOKYOPOP introduced manga to America, building a category that has been embraced by millions of teens," says Rich Maggiotto, President & CEO, Zinio. "We're thrilled to have a partnership that will offer loyal and new manga readers these digital editions."

Initially, most manga on the launch list will sell for a material discount, $5.99 per volume, while some larger volumes, such as the Gravitation collection--a two-volume omnibus edition--are priced at $7.99. For a complete list of titles, please visit www.Zinio.com/tokyopop.

I Reads You Review: AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER 1

Creators: Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko with Aaron Ehasz, Peter Goldfinger, and Josh Stolberg (writers) and Nickelodeon Animation Studios (art)
Publishing Information: Del Rey Manga, Color, paperback, 94 pages, $7.99 (US), $9.99 CAN
Ordering Numbers: ISBN: 978-0-345-51852-1 (ISBN-13)

Avatar: The Last Airbender was an animated series that first ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. With the upcoming film adaptation of the series, entitled The Last Airbender, debuting in theatres in July, Del Rey Manga is releasing manga tie-ins to the movie.

One of the releases, simply entitled, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a film comic and is actually not a new release. In regular comic books or manga, the art is, of course, drawn by one or more artists. In a film comic, still images from animation or live action film is used as the art. TOKYOPOP calls its film comics, “Cine-Manga” (a trademarked term). Four years ago, TOKYOPOP began publishing Avatar: The Last Airbender Cine-Manga using images from episodes of the Nickelodeon series. In fact, TOKYOPOP’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Volume 1 Cine-Manga sold over half-a-million copies, according to the publisher.

Now, Del Rey Manga is republishing, Avatar: The Last Airbender volume 1 (sans the Cine-Manga label). This film comic adapts the first episode of the animated series, entitled “The Boy in the Iceberg” (Season 1, Episode 1 – Book One: Water).

For those who don’t know: Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world divided between four nations: the Water Tribes, Air Nomads, Fire Nation, and Earth Kingdom. Fire Nation has destroyed the harmonious balance among the four nations. These dire times are just when the Avatar, the master of all four elements, is expected to bring balance to the world, but he has been missing for a century.

Teenaged siblings, Katara and her brother, Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe, rescue a boy who has been frozen in a sphere of ice for one hundred years. The boy, named Aang, is indeed the long-lost Avatar and also the last airbender. Katara and Sokka must help Aang, whose training was never completed, master the four elements in order to fulfill his destiny. But the determined Prince Zuko of Fire Nation also wants the Avatar.

This is probably the best film comic that I’ve read thus far – even better than my beloved film comic of The Secret Saturdays that Del Rey published last year. Perhaps, its goodness is a result of the high quality of the source material, the original animated television series. The highest recommendation that I can give this is to say that I’m eager for future volumes, and that I will pass this on to my nephew because I know he’ll love it, as will other young readers. This is an excellent read.

Dame Darcy at Fantagraphics Bookstore July 10th

Renaissance Woman Dame Darcy at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on Saturday, July 10.

Multifaceted cartoonist, musician, performance artist, fortune teller and neo-Victorian culture maven appears at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery on July 10 to celebrate the publication of MEAT CAKE, a collection of stories from the first decade of her popular comic book series of the same name. The event features an exhibition of Dame Darcy’s original comic art and other creations, an enchanting music recital and a fortune telling session with each book signed.

MEAT CAKE is like a peek into an imaginative, deranged dollhouse filled with fractured fairy tales. An expanded version of the long out-of-print hardcover book, this new paperback assembles the very best of Darcy’s work from the first 11 issues of the beloved comic (including “Hungry Is the Heart,” the legendary collaboration with Watchmen creator Alan Moore). According to the New York Times, “Darcy's comics are aesthetic manifestos… Darcy is a star. Meat Cake will prevail, as luxury takes over America. And the world beyond.” The Los Angeles Times observes, “[Darcy] has created a childlike, otherworldly realm, a land that hovers in the twilight space between the whimsical and the macabre. Ghosts and goblins, foul-tempered stepmothers, lovesick mermaids and charmed forests are all rendered in Darcy's distinctive hand, loose and flowing lines reminiscent of the work of Edward Gorey.”

Dame Darcy’s appearance on Saturday, July 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM coincides with the colorful Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack featuring challenging visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic industrial arts corridor. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at Airport way S.) only minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Ryan Kinnaird Presents "Next Gen Warz"

Forget waiting in line for the next game system -- get in line for Ryan Kinnaird's NEXT GEN WARZ, a hilariously satirical take on anthropomorphic video game systems! The first issue of the miniseries from Image Comics will hit stands September 22.

"Next Gen Warz is a fun and satirical look at the world of video games," says Kinnaird. "From those who play them, to those who create them, and to those who make the machines the games are played on."

In NEXT GEN WARZ, writer/artist Kinnaird (X-Men: Phoenix - Legacy of Fire, PSM) pens a titillating comedic tale. A hardcore gamer replaces his broken console while it is in the repair shop. When he brings home his repaired console to meet his new console, the female-embodied video game consoles battle for supremacy. The greatest conflict for disposable income begins!

I Reads You Review: 20TH CENTURY BOYS, VOL. 8

Creators: Naoki Urasawa with Akemi Wegmüller (English adaptation)
Publishing Information: VIZ Media, paperback, 216 pages, $12.99 (US), $16.99 CAN, £8.99 UK
Ordering Numbers: ISBN: 978-1-4215-2343-9 (ISBN-13)

20th Century Boys, a science fiction adventure series from famed manga creator, Naoki Urasawa, began with Kenji Endo. A hardworking, honorable man that some considered a loser, Kenji ran the family business (a convenience store). Some people, including his big-mouthed mother, thought that he wasn’t doing that well at it. Kenji also took care of Kanna, the infant daughter his sister abandoned before she disappeared. Kenji may have considered himself a failed rock musician, but he turned out to be the most important man in the world. Someone from his past was behind the rise of a bizarre religious cult called the Friends that was planning millennial doom.

On December 31, 2000, Bloody New Year’s Eve brought the world to the brink of destruction. Fourteen years later, Neo Tokyo is a thriving multiethnic, metropolis that lives under the shadow of the worldwide cult of the Friends. Now, Kenji’s niece, Kanna, finds herself caught in another Friends’ plot.

In Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys, Vol. 8 (entitled Kenji’s Song), the narrative focuses on Koizumi Kyoko, a student at the high school Kanna’s attends. Because of her history project on Bloody New Year’s Eve, Koizumi has earned herself an extended stay at the surreal, hellish theme park/re-education camp, Friend Land. There she meets a former friend of Kenji’s, which leads her even deeper into the secrets of the Friends. Meanwhile, still more of the events of Bloody New Year’s Eve and an incident from Kenji’s youth are revealed in two separate flashbacks.

As is usual with a Naoki Urasawa manga, 20th Century Boys is an absolutely fantastic read. Once you start, you won’t want to stop. Naoki spins this narrative from the point of view of multiple protagonists and antagonists, which can sometimes be confusing. The suspense, action, and breakneck speed of the narrative, however, delivers such joys that the reader will work hard not to be confused by the menagerie of characters. This manga jumps off the page like a summer potboiler.

Skullkickers Coming from Image Comics

KICK TO THE SKULL

Image Comics revives fantasy-fueled action comedy with SKULLKICKERS

In September, Image Comics brings you fantasy as you like it -- hilarious and action packed -- with SKULLKICKERS, an all-new ongoing series. Written by Jim Zubkavich with art by Edwin Huang, Chris Stevens and Misty Coats, SKULLKICKERS promises to turn any fantasy motif on its head.

"I love sword and sorcery novels and role-playing games," says Zubkavich, "so I wanted to use those as a jumping off point and marry them with a slightly sarcastic self awareness of fantasy clichés. At its core, the book is about fun characters and wild adventure, with witty banter thrown in to keep it all clipping along at a healthy pace."

SKULLKICKERS is fantasy action-comedy. Two mercenaries are entangled in a high-class assassination plot and nothing -- not werewolves, skeletons or black magic -- will stop them from getting paid. If you love tabletop fantasy RPGs, buddy stories involving a big guy and a dwarf, or movies like ARMY OF DARKNESS, SKULLKICKERS is the book for you!

SKULLKICKERS #1, a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in stores September 22, 2010. Readers can get a taste of Skullkickers in POPGUN, VOL. 2 (MAY082176) and POPGUN, VOL. 3 (JAN092368). Follow the Skullkickers blog at www.skullkickers.com.

Mike Gagnon's Dream Comes True with Marvel Comics

Small Press Creator Makes Mark with Marvel Comics

Writer and comic fan Mike Gagnon has achieved a lifelong goal, having his work published by entertainment giant Marvel Comics.

Gagnon is a professional writer who has also worked as a publisher, editor and graphic designer for various publishers in his decade long career. Gagnon has produced several small press graphic novels, including the all ages humor comic titled Monkeys and Midgets, but his work with Marvel is his debut credit with a major comic publisher.

Gagnon recently achieved his goal of writing for the worlds largest comic book publisher when he joined the team of writers for Marvel’s series of character handbooks, with his work appearing in “The official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Updates A-Z” and “Deadpool Corps: Rank and Foul” and will soon appear in “The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Premiere Hardcover Vol. 14”.

“It was a great experience, I can’t thank editors Jeff Christiansen and Jeff Youngquist enough for giving me the chance to contribute to the Marvel Universe in my own small way.” said Gagnon.

It was his lifelong love of comics that led him to choose a career in writing, and his work can now be found in some of the titles he enjoyed reading as a kid.

“I always enjoyed reading and collecting Marvel comics including the series of handbooks as a kid, and Deadpool has been a long time favorite character of mine, so getting to contribute to a book devoted to the character is very rewarding” Gagnon added.

Over the years Gagnon has written for a number of pop culture and art themed magazines, such as Back Issue, published by TwoMorrows publishing. More details on his work can be found at www.mikegagnon.ca.

The new edition of the Marvel Universe Handbook featuring Gagnon’s writing was released in February. The Deadpool Corps: Rank and Foul one-shot was released in May and can still be found on comic racks and in specialty stores, although many retailers report the title selling out quickly thanks to the popularity of the feature character. Check with your local comic shop for availability and shipping dates for the Premiere Hardcover edition.

David Beckham Latest Subject of Bluewater Comics' "Fame" Series

SOCCER STAR DAVID BECKHAM THE SUBJECT OF LATEST BLUEWATER BIOGRAPHY COMIC BOOK

He may be the most famous soccer star in the world. He's married to a Spice Girl. He is, by any measure, an international sex symbol. And now soccer player David Beckham has become a comic book hero. This September, Beckham will star in Fame: David Beckham from comic book publisher Bluewater Productions.

Writer Pete Rogers and artist Pablo Martinena bring Beckham's amazing career to life, from his earliest days on the soccer field, when he dreamed of playing for Manchester United, to the challenges of his soccer days in the United States.

“Working on the Beckham book was quite different from any other comic I've worked on to date,” Rogers said. “Telling someone's real life story was quite a challenge, and I tried to find as many ways as possible to ensure that it was visually interesting and not just a case of 'he did this and then he did that'.”

Rogers wasn't content to simply read about Beckham and his life when researching his script. He spoke to a wide range of people about what Beckham means to them and the sport of soccer.

“One of the reasons I enjoyed working on the comic so much is that I got the chance to go down memory lane myself, not just to pivotal moments in David's life but also back to my own childhood, as some of the first comics I ever read were actually football comics,” Rogers said. “I used to pick up titles like Tiger (with Billy's Boots and Hotshot Hamish), Roy of the Rovers and Football Picture Story Monthly without fail. When I wasn't reading comics I was playing football, and I used to spend the school holidays training with local professional side 'AFC Bournemouth' at their Summer Soccer School. Getting the Beckham pages back from brilliant artist Pablo Martinena has taken me back to reading those comics on long hot journeys to Dean Court in the back of my Dad's car."

Fame: David Beckham is just the latest installment in Bluewater's popular series of biography comics tracing the lives of influential movie stars, sports heroes and musical icons. Past issues have featured Lady GaGa, Twilight star Robert Pattinson and pop sensation Taylor Swift.

Fame: David Beckham retails for $3.99 and can be found online at Amazon.com or in comic book shops across the country.

“David Beckham is the first sports star we've featured in a Bluewater comic,” said Darren Davis, president and founder of Bluewater Productions. “Of course, Beckham is much more than simply a sports star. He's also an international celebrity, as famous for his looks as he is for his soccer abilities, so he's a perfect fit for our Fame line.”

To order the book contact your local comic book store by going to www.comicshoplocator.com or go to Amazon.com.
