“The Wild Storm – Chapter One”

Started by Jim Lee and Brandon Choi, WildStorm Productions was one of the founding studios of Image Comics.  The WildStorm Universe, the fictional shared universe of comic books published by WildStorm, debuted in WildC.A.T.s #1 (cover dated: August 1992).  I think I loyally enjoyed WildStorm titles for about five years, gradually losing interest as the decade and the 20th century waned.  Jim Lee sold WildStorm Productions and his intellectual properties to DC Comics in 1999, and eventually the WildStorm Universe was folded into the DC Universe (DCU) proper.

It can be argued that the most interesting and perhaps, most influential comic books to come out of the WildStorm Universe were written by Warren Ellis (his run on StormWatch, his creation of The Authority and Planetary).  Now, Ellis is back to reinvent or reset the WildStorm universe – small “u.”  The title that begins the reset is The Wild Storm, written by Ellis; drawn by Jon Davis-Hunt; colored by Ivan Plascencia; and lettered by Simon Bowland.

The Wild Storm #1 opens with the return of Zealot and Voodoo.  What is important, however, is that someone wants to kill Jacob Marlowe, CEO of HALO, the world-changing tech company.  What's up with Angela Spica?  Who wants to kill Marlowe more than Miles Craven of I.O. (International Operations)?  Is it Michael Cray?  Wake the CAT.

I enjoyed Warren Ellis' work for WildStorm (well, except DV8), so I have hopes for The Wild Storm.  Are they high hopes?  I think I'll see how high or if I should levitate those hopes after each issue.  Ellis says that you do not have to have read earlier WildStorm comic books to understand The Wild Storm.  Still, I think 75 percent of the thrill of The Wild Storm is being familiar with these characters; how else can you really enjoy the new riffs on these semi-old melodies?

I like the clean, modern line of artist Jon Davis-Hunt.  It reminds me of the artists who have drawn Marvel's Iron Man comic books over the past few years.  There is a hint of realism mixed with earthiness and futurism in Davis-Hunt's compositions in this first issue.  So besides Ellis' story, I really want to see what Davis-Hunt does from here on out.

Review: THE MONSTROUS COLLECTION of Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson

THE MONSTROUS COLLECTION OF STEVE NILES AND BERNIE WRIGHTSON
IDW PUBLISHING – @IDWPublishing

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

STORY: Steve Niles
ART: Bernie Wrightson
LETTERS: Robbie Robbins, Neil Uyetake, and Shawn Lee
ISNB: 978-1-68405-030-7; paperback – 7x11 (December 2017)
200pp, B&W, $24.99 U.S., $33.99 CAN (January 2, 2018)

The Monstrous Collection of Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson is a paperback collection of comics produced by writer Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and artist Bernie Wrightson (Swamp Thing; Captain Sternn).  Ostensibly a reprint collection of three comic book miniseries, The Monstrous Collection is a showcase of Wrightson's striking black and white comics artwork.  The last 28 pages of The Monstrous Collection is a gallery of Wrightson's art, including cover art for the comic books reprinted here.

The Monstrous Collection of Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson collects three miniseries that Niles and Wrightson created over a three-year period beginning in 2008.  Each miniseries was three-issues long and set in a dark universe created by Niles, a universe that recalls supernatural detective, weird fiction, and EC Comics (apparently an influence on Wrightson).

The first miniseries is Dead, She Said (3 issues; May to September 2008).  It stars private investigator Joe Coogan, who wakes up in his apartment one morning feeling real funky and smelling even funkier.  Now, he has to find out who killed him and why, and his killer may be more dangerous than anyone including Coogan realizes.

The second miniseries is The Ghoul (3 issues; November 2009, January to March 2010).  Detective Lieutenant Lloyd Klimpt of the Los Angeles Police Department believes he is on to something strange and perhaps criminal in a case involving a family of famous and acclaimed actresses.  Being rational, he cannot make the great mental leap from the normal to the paranormal.  The FBSI (Federal Bureau of Supernatural Investigations) is sending someone who will hopefully help Klimpt make the leap for the dark side to the darker side.  He is The Ghoul, and Klimpt has him for one night only.

The final miniseries is Doc Macabre (3 issues; December 2010, January to February 2011).  He is a boy genius.  His Dexter's Lab is a high-tech playpen that Victor Von Frankenstein would love.  He is Doc Macabre, and he loves ghost-busting, but when an angry, naked male ghost busts him down, Doc Macabre will need new tech and some help.  The series guest stars Joe Coogan and The Ghoul.

I am going to give The Monstrous Collection of Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson a high grade.  One of the reasons I give high grades in comics review is if I like a comic book, trade collection, or graphic novel so much that I wish I could keep reading past the last page.  By the time I got to the end section with the art gallery, I could have read another three Steve Niles and Berni Wrightson miniseries.

The summary on the back of The Monstrous Collection of Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson calls Niles and Wrightson two horror legends.  Wrightson certainly is.  I would say that he is the greatest American comic book artist in the genres of horror and dark fantasy, and Wrightson was also quite good at science fiction comic books.  In one of the quotes attributed to him, Wrightson says that all he ever wanted to do was draw, and that is clear in every page in this collection – narrative or otherwise.

I have never thought much of the original 30 Days of Night miniseries that rocketed Steve Niles to comic book fame, although I did like the sequel, 30 Days of Night: Dark Days.  However, I like Dead, She Said, The Ghoul, and Doc Macabre.  They are the kind of pulpy, weird, dark fantasy, and horror fiction that turned writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, and Algernon Blackwood into legends.  So, modern versions of such genres and sub-genres could turn a modern writer into a legend.

Dead, She Said is as witty and as droll as it is ghoulish, kind of like The Maltese Falcon with some of Young Frankenstein's sensibilities.  The Ghoul has two characters perfect for a buddy cop team-up, and The Ghoul would be great alone, in a duo, or in a group; this is a character with potential.  Doc Macabre is silly and frivolous, but the lead character's absent-minded professor vibe gives it potential.

The Monstrous Collection of Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson is a comic book art book that showcases the art of a legend, the late Bernie Wrightson (who died in 2017), but finds the art in the weird imagination of a horror comic book writer.

Review: DARTH MAUL #1

DARTH MAUL No. 1
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

WRITER: Cullen Bunn
ART: Luke Ross
COLORS: Nolan Woodard
LETTERS: VC's Joe Caramagna
COVER: Rod Reis
VARIANT COVERS: Rafael Albuquerque; Mark Brooks; John Tyler Christopher; Terry Dodson; Rod Reis; Michael Turner; Ashley Witter
36pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (April 2017)

Rated “T”

Book 1, Part 1

Since he first appeared in the film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Darth Maul has been a favorite character of Star Wars fans.  Maul is a Sith Lord, an apprentice to Darth Sidious, and is seemingly killed in his film debut.  With striking facial tattoos, vestigial horns, and a double-bladed lightsaber, however, Maul proved too popular to stay dead.  The character returned in the canonical Star Wars animated series, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.”

Now, Darth Maul gets his first Star Wars comic book from Marvel Comics.  [There were Darth Maul comic books from Dark Horse Comics, the previous license holder of Star Wars comic books].  Entitled, Darth Maul, this five-issue miniseries is written by Cullen Bunn; drawn by Luke Ross; colored by Nolan Woodard; and lettered by Joe Caramagna.

Darth Maul #1 opens before the events depicted in The Phantom Menace.  The Sith Lord, Sidious, is not ready to reveal himself to his enemy, the Jedi.  However, his apprentice, Darth Maul, grows restless, and finds that hunting some of the galaxy's most dangerous creatures does not satisfy his blood lust.  Now, Sidious sends Maul on a mission that will unexpectedly yield just the kind of hunting that Maul really wants to undertake.

It is easy for me to be cynical every time Marvel Comics announces another Star Wars comic book, but I know I am going to read at least the first issue of each new series, and likely read miniseries in their entirety.  Sometimes, I am genuinely happy with what I read, which is the case with Darth Maul.

Writer Cullen Bunn completely sells the idea that Maul so chafes under Sidious that he would willingly tempt fate and go against his master's wishes just to feed his blood lust.  It is a side of Maul that writers of Star Wars animated television series and novels have either hinted at or fully depicted.  With his Darth Maul comic book, it seems that Bunn is going to use this to full effect, and he may actually take the character places others have not.

The art team of Luke Ross and Nolan Woodard are producing a visual and graphical style that is unlike other Star Wars comic books.  I don't know if Woodard is coloring the art directly from Ross' pencils, but the effect is striking – bold, rich colors over moody compositions.  I recommend.

[This issue includes the bonus story, “Probe Droid Problem” by Chris Eliopoulos and Jordie Bellaire.]
