Dark Horse to Unveil "Turok" Details

DARK HORSE TO UNVEIL THE FIRST LOOK AT TUROK, SON OF STONE®, AT COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL

CREATIVE TEAM BEHIND NEW GOLD KEY LINE ANNOUNCED

Building on the success of the Dark Horse Gold Key line, today the Company announced that it would provide the comic world with the very first look at the highly-anticipated Turok, Son of Stone®, comic at this week’s Comic-Con International 2010 in San Diego, CA. News of the line was first announced at Comic Con International 2009, and fans have been anxiously awaiting details ever since.

Perhaps the best-known character in the iconic Gold Key line, Turok has been highly visible in the public eye in recent years, following its incredibly successful video game franchise, as well as the acclaimed feature length animated, Turok: Son of Stone.

Now, Turok returns to the comic book world helmed by comic book veteran, Jim Shooter, with art by Eduardo Francisco (Mass Effect: Incursion), and incredible covers by Raymond Swanland (Magnus: Robot Fighter, Aliens vs. Predator), arriving in your local comic shop this October.

"Turok was one of my favorite comics in my youth," said Mike Richardson, president of Dark Horse Comics. "We're having great fun re-imagining the series with Jim and we are building up to some great surprises for those familiar with the character as well as new readers."

"One continuum over from ours, Earth is still in its Cretaceous Period," Jim Shooter explained. "However, a drifting rift in spacetime is sweeping things from anywhen here to there. It's a dangerous place. How strong, how tough, how smart would you have to be to survive, to thrive, to become a force to be reckoned with? This is a story about about a fearless man who will find a way. I love this series."

Fans are encouraged to attend the Dark Horse publishing panel on Friday, July 23rd at 11:30am in Room 3, for exclusive news on Turok, and rest of the Gold Key titles.

DarkBrain Seeks to Innovate Webcomics

DarkBrain, LLC Seeks to Change the Face of Webcomics

DarkBrain, LLC, an innovative new webcomics publisher, released today Cortex #3. The company, which is founded and run by Andrew Zar, opened its virtual doors on February 6, 2010. Producing 12 original series of comics, each has graphic novel quality art and a great story - but also includes voice-over narration, original music, and user choices and preferences that change the story itself. In addition to the monthly online magazine, DarkBrain also features four regular ongoing comic stories with new pages every Friday.

Cortex, an online magazine featuring full length comic stories, debuted in April with a free inaugural issue comprised of two full length stories and a series of short strips. In June, DarkBrain offered Cortex #2 at the cost of $4.99. July’s issue showcases two full-length stories including the pirate adventure “The Vat Vol. 2,” illustrated by Marvel and DC veteran Ernie Chan. In this issue readers learn more about the mysterious genie who appeared in Volume 1 and the history of Brainstorm’s captive, Velouria. Joining “The Vat Vol. 2,” Cortex #3 also features dramatic new art talent Renato Camilo illustrating The Butcher #1 "Reckoning." The Butcher is a brutal tale set in 230 BC and covers the expansion of Rome interests in Cisalpine Gaul. Rounding out the magazine is a short comic called Grace Comes Home #1 "Arrival" where Grace makes a dramatic return to Earth, seven years after her abduction. She is a little "different" now, and is also being hunted by a fire-spewing alien. Readers at DarkBrain can purchase Cortex #3 for $4.99 or get a magazine "six pack" that will include over 300 pages of art, voice and music for only $24.95.

DarkBrain produces edgy content designed specifically for PG-13 and R+-rated audiences, yet with a unique feature. The site utilizes a state of the art preferences system where readers control how intense they wish their viewing experience to be. DarkBrain.com was established to be a pro-artist studio, with artists both being paid for work up front in addition to receiving royalties. 50% of all sales go back to the artists. The business model is designed to break down the barrier of entry for independent comic authors and to have artists participate in growth right from the start.

"Freakshow" Preview at Comic-Con International

Ape Entertainment To Preview Freakshow at SDCC

Ape Entertainment announced today that it will provide attendees at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con with an advance look at FREAKSHOW, a new title co-created by David Server & Jackson Lanzing with art by rising star Joe Suitor (Spider-Man: Fear Itself, GI Joe: Helix).

The three-issue limited series follows the story of five mutated survivors after a devastating chemical explosion, which has left the world’s only superhero dead and his city trapped in a dangerous and mysterious quarantine. In the wake of the disaster, these five refugees must decide whether to use their powerful but defective new abilities to save the remains of the city or extract their revenge on those responsible.

“As readers, we’ve always gravitated towards the creatures and outsiders in comics, and this story comes from wanting to deconstruct those archetypes,” says Server. “When you’re born out of the most nightmarish origin you can imagine, where does that leave you? If your identity is ripped away and you’re left a monster, what might anyone be capable of?”

“While we're playing with the iconography of superheroes, our characters aren't traditionally ‘super-heroic,’” adds Lanzing. “They're freaks, survivors of literally apocalyptic trauma. What we're trying to do is let the reader into the mind of these damaged characters and challenge their expectations. FREAKSHOW is about finding heroism in yourself, even when it seems like there's nothing left to save.”

Though the series won’t arrive in stores until early 2011, advance copies of FREAKSHOW #1 will be available for purchase at the Ape Entertainment booth (#2104) on the convention floor. The issue features a cover by Suitor, as well as a special variant cover by comic industry legend Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan, The Boys).
