Wytches is a new comic book series from DC Comics superstar writer, Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire), and artist Jock (The Losers). It presents an alternative version of witches as creatures called “wytches,” which are ancient, terrible, powerful, and hungry.
Wytches #1 opens in early September 2014. The book introduces a teenager named Sailor Rooks, a girl beset by trauma and tragedy. Her father is children's book author, Charles Rooks, and her mother, Lucy, is wheelchair bound. The Rooks relocated because of a killing in which Sailor was involved, but the teen knows that her reputation or infamy has proceeded her. That is not the only thing that has followed Sailor.
I thoroughly enjoy Scott Snyder's work on The New 52 relaunch of Batman (with artist Greg Capullo), which is surprising because I did not expect much for the series after reading their Batman #1. Jock has created some comic books that I have liked... I guess. I only bought Wytches #1 because I currently have an itch for number one issues published by Image Comics, which is Wytches' publisher. Because the comic book shop I frequent sold out of Wytches #1, I had to pay $4.99 to get a copy from Mile High Comics.
Oh, yes, it was worth the extra two bucks plus postage to get this comic book. I have decided to stop giving grades to number one issues. Sometimes, I am conservative and give number one issues a lower grade than they deserve. Sometimes, I am so surprised by a first issue that I really become to generous with the accolades and grading.
However, I am tempted to ignore my new policy and give Wytches #1 an A+, but I am going to stay the course like George H.W. Bush. The concept is hugely intriguing, and Jock's art, with its bold, slashing brush work and jagged and edgy compositions, delivers some striking, bone-chilling, blood-curdling moments visuals and graphics. I have to have the next issue, even if it is at Mile High Comics prices.

Review: Matsuri Hino Presents LAST NIGHT - Vampire Knight Illustrations
MATSURI HINO PRESENTS LAST NIGHT: VAMPIRE KNIGHT ILLUSTRATIONS
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
CARTOONIST: Matsuri Hino
TRANSLATION: Tetsuichiro Miyaki
EDITOR: Nancy Thislethwaite
ISBN: 978-1-4215-7605-3; hardback (October 2014); Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”
44pp, B&W, $15.99 U.S., $18.99 CAN, £9.99 UK (for graphic novel and art book set)
Vampire Knight is a shojo manga series written and drawn by manga creator, Matsuri Hino. VIZ Media recently published the final graphic novel collection of the series with the release of Vampire Knight Volume 19, on October 14, 2014. Vol. 19 was released in a regular edition graphic novel and also a “Limited Edition” with an alternate cover. The Limited Edition is actually a two-book collection that includes a hardcover mini art book entitled, Matsuri Hino Presents Last Night: Vampire Knight Illustrations. [The Vampire Knight “Night Class” Manga Box Set 2, to be released November 4, 2014, will also include a copy of Last Night.]
Last Night contains over 40 full-color illustrations drawn and colored by Hino. Most of these illustrations appeared in LaLa, the Japanese manga magazine in which Vampire Knight was originally serialized. Many of the series' characters appear in these illustrations, but the characters which are most depicted are, of course, Vampire Knight's (un)holy trinity of and love triangle: Yuki Cross, Zero Kiryu, and Kaname Kuran.
Is the packaging price of Vampire Knight Limited Edition 19 money well spent? Well, my generous VIZ Media rep gave me both the single-volume regular edition and Limited Edition set. The Limited Edition costs $6 more than the regular edition, and Last Night is worth the extra six bucks, especially if you, dear reader, are a fan of Matsuri Hino's illustrations.
Hino's moody, pouting, and contemplative vampires are gorgeous. Other than their school uniforms, little of the characters' clothing could be “off the rack,” unless the clothes are off a rack found in an acclaimed fashion designer's personal work place. These are fashion icon vampires. As we leave the world of Vampire Knight, Last Night is the kind of neato item we might grab before we turn off the lights on our way out.

WAYWARD #3

COLORS: John Rauch and Jim Zub with Tamra Bonvillain – @John_Rauch and @TBonvillain

COVER: Steve Cummings and Ross A. Campbell

Writer Jim Zub sent an advanced review PDF copy of the third issue of Wayward to comics media people, and the ComicBookBin was one of the recipients. I decided to also share the good news about Wayward with you, dear reader. I really appreciate the chance to read advanced comics, but when the comic book is something as good as Wayward, I almost feel honored to receive it.
Wayward is the intriguing new fantasy comic book series from Zub and penciller Steve Cummings. Published by Image Comics, Wayward focuses on Rori Lane, a half-Irish/half-Japanese teen girl who is trying to start a new life in Japan, only to find herself connected to the magic and ancient creatures that lurk in the shadows of Tokyo.
As Wayward #3 (“Chapter Three”) opens, Rori can sense a storm is brewing – both naturally and supernaturally. She still isn't fitting in at school, but she's found a homeboy, of sorts, in Shirai, a teenaged boy who can “eat ghosts.” Meanwhile, somewhere else in Tokyo, a stranger man senses a “rogue weaver.” Also, enter Nikaido, and someone whom Rori knows has a secret.
Clearly, Wayward is attracting readers, and I think that is because Jim Zub is slowly introducing readers to a world of magic and intrigue. Perhaps, it is a really big world, and the only way for Zub to do right by his creation is to work through the characters. They confront the magic in bits and pieces, rather than having to face an epic, wide-ranging magical conspiracy all at once. Zub knows that if we buy into the characters first, we will also accept the supernatural that they encounter as they encounter it.
Yes, someone says the word, “magic,” in this chapter, but artist Steve Cummings perfectly blends the magical, the supernatural, and the otherness into a solidly real world of mundane tasks and ordinary living. Cummings is going to make us invest in this world, by recognizing its relationship to ours. Cummings' art is kind of teaching our imaginations to feel the difference between an ordinary world in which magic just might be as legitimate a part of the world as anything else.
Yeah, it's not fluke. Wayward is one of the best new titles of the year. Plus, Zack Davisson offers another hugely informative essay on the mythology of Japan in “The Magical Foxes of Japan.”

Review: PUNKS: The Comic #1
PUNKS: THE COMIC #1
IMAGE COMICS – @ImageComics
CREATORS: Joshua Hale Fialkov and Kody Chamberlain – @JoshFialkov @KodyChamberlain
COVER: Kody Chamberlain
VARIANT COVER: Rob Guillory
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (October 2014)
Rated T+ / Teen Plus
Writer Joshua Hale Fialkov (The Ultimates) and artist Kody Chamberlain (Sweets, Tag) revive their comic book project, Punks, with the new ongoing series, Punks: The Comic, which is being published by Image Comics. Fialkov and Chamberlain published at least two issues of Punks via Digital Webbing in 2007. Punks stood out because of its surreal and absurd humor and because Chamberlain produced the art by cutting up photographic images and pasting them together to create the characters and settings.
Punks: The Comic #1 features the return of Dog, Skull, Fist, and Abe Lincoln. Dog is a human figure with a bulldog head pasted onto it. Skull has a skeleton's skull. Fist is a clenched fist on a human body, and Abe Lincoln features an iconic image of the President Abraham Lincoln head on various bodies and figures.
The story opens at the quartet's home (a dormitory?). The misadventures begin with Dog and his “Wunderpants” and includes a visit from a girl he is trying to romance. Her arrival coincides with an invasion of gnomes. Will it be happily ever after or just insane as it ever was?
[Punks: The Comic #1 includes some story pages from Punks: The Summer Comic Special, which was published in 2007.]
The cut-and-paste, do-it-yourself aesthetic of Punks: The Comics goes farther than one would think. It is not a one-note joke, but I am curious to see where the creators go with this. This comic book concept also reminds me of those animations that Terry Gilliam created for “Monty Python's Flying Circus.” I think Fialkov has previously mentioned that the late British television series, “The Young Ones,” as an inspiration for Punks.
Punks: The Comic is so “out there,” yet it works. I have to admit that I am genuinely surprised by how successful the humor is, rather than merely being arty, pretentious and vague. Also, I can't help but admire the work Kody puts into creating the art. Readers looking for something truly different in comic books will want Punks: The Comic.

COVER: Tony S. Daniel and Ryan Winn with Tomeu Morey

176pp, Color, $22.99 U.S., $25.99 CAN (2012)
Batman created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger
When The New 52 brought forth “new” Batman comic book series, I found myself crazy-in-love with Detective Comics #1, produced by writer-artist, Tony S. Daniel. In fact, I preferred Detective Comics to Batman #1 by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. I only read the first two issues of Daniel's Detective Comics, but I thought that the first issue reminded me of the first “book” of Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns more than any comic book I had read in a long time.
I bought the first hardcover collection of The New 52 Detective Comics. Sadly, it took me two-and-half-years to get around to reading it. In that time, Snyder and Capullo's Batman became one of the bestselling comic book series in North America, and a favorite of mine. On the other hand, Daniel departed Detective Comics after issue #12.
Batman – Detective Comics Volume One: Faces of Death collects Detective Comics #1 to 7, which comprises two story arcs. Detective Comics begins with Batman in the midst of a dangerous mission. He has to find The Joker and also discover what is behind the grisly murders of several of the Joker's acquaintances. Eventually, Batman battles The Dollmaker, a killer who removes the faces of his victims and even some of their organs. He uses them as macabre building materials to create new people. The Dollmaker is also seeking revenge against Commissioner Jim Gordon.
The second story arc centers on The Penguin's off-shore gambling palace, The Iceberg Casino. The casino is also a front for Penguin's money-laundering operation. The story also involves Gotham City Mayor Hady's re-election campaign; the mayor's election-year war on Batman; reporter and Bruce Wayne love-interest, Charlotte Rivers; Rivers' sister, Jill; and a cheap hood named Jack Houston, whose ability to change his face has earned him the name “Snakeskin.”
Having finally finished the Faces of Death collection, I have to say that, three years later, “The Dollmaker” arc still thrills me. I think it is a definite heir to Frank Miller's seminal Batman work from the mid-1980s. Daniel's Batman is a combination penny dreadful and Saturday matinee thriller; each chapter ends in either a cliffhanger or with a shocking reveal. Batman fighting in the darkest corners of Gotham, with the threat of death hanging over several people, but especially over him. Several times, I actually believed that Batman was going to be killed. I knew better, of course. Batman isn't going to die-as-in-stay-dead, but still, those stories...
“The Iceberg Casino” arc is entertaining, but is an average to above-average Batman story arc. It is sort of a Batman as action movie/crime thriller. Of course, there are some cliffhanger-styled thrills int this story, but this is nothing particularly special.
I think Tony Daniel was unable to maintain the promise of his opening Detective Comics story arc. In Batman, Snyder's story and Capullo's art create a gripping narrative with striking graphics, one issue after another. Daniel with inker Ryan Winn also created a graphic narrative full of high-drama and edgy visuals. Visually, Daniel and Winn offered a Batman that was a bird of prey, and the art had a sense of movement so that Batman always seemed to be racing across a dark, but alluring landscape.
As the second story arc advanced, Daniel's art took on a Neal Adams-quality that moves, but lacks something... perhaps, the edginess it had in “The Dollmaker” arc. I first discovered Tony Daniel's work back in the mid to late 1990s, on his Image Comics series, The Tenth. The early issues of that series had the characteristics of a raw, but promising talent. With Marlo Alquiza inking his pencil art, Daniel delivered art that grabbed the reader with its horror-themed creatures and characters. After Alquiza stopped inking The Tenth, what was raw, but promising became unfocused and undisciplined.
I'll remember Tony Daniel's New 52 launch of Detective Comics for the promise the early issues offered, with joy, but also with some disappointment. That promise plus 11 pages of preliminary art, thumbnails, sketches, and pencils have encouraged me to give Batman – Detective Comics Volume One: Faces of Death a high grade. By the way, Daniel is now working on another relaunch of the DC Comics' character, Deathstroke.

Review: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Legends of Baldur's Gate #1
DUNGEONS & DRAGONS LEGENDS OF BALDUR'S GATE #1
IDW PUBLISHING – @IDWPublishing @Wizards_DnD
WRITER: Jim Zub – @JimZub
ART: Max Dunbar – @Max_Dunbar
COLORS: John-Paul Bove
LETTERS: Neil Uyetake
COVER: Sarah Stone
VARIANT COVERS: Max Dunbar with John-Paul Bove; Max Dunbar with Jim Zub; Raymond Swanland; Michael Komark
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S.
Tyranny of Dragons
Writer Jim Zub sent out PDF copies for review of his latest comic book series, Dungeons & Dragons Legends of Baldur's Gate. It is a new licensed Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) comic book series from IDW Publishing. This series is written by Zub and drawn by Max Dunbar with colors by John-Paul Bove and letters by Neil Uyetake.
Apparently, Baldur's Gate is a fictional city in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of the D&D fantasy role-playing game (RPG). I say “apparently” because it has been decades since I have read a D&D comic book or even played the game.
Baldur's Gate is located in the Faerûn region and is a coastal city on the north bank of the river Chiontar. It is “a place of history and a home to legends.” Dungeons & Dragons Legends of Baldur's Gate #1 (“Part One”) opens in the Upper City where a young female moon elf, Delina the Wild Mage, is on the run from two flying, stone gargoyles.
Her magic is not enough to stop them, but Minsc, a tall, imposing figure of a man, comes to her rescue. He has a pet, Boo the hamster, and insists on calling Delina by the name, “Neera.” She will accept the hamster and the new name, if Minsc can help her find her missing brother.
Simply put, Dungeons & Dragons Legends of Baldur's Gate #1 is the kickoff of a comic book adventure series. Specifically, it is a comic book narrative structured as if it were a D&D campaign. Writer Jim Zub grew up on D&D, as he writes in a “Welcome” essay at the end of this first issue, so the series may reflect what Zub loves about D&D.
Legends of Baldur's Gate #1 is not a great comic book, but it does have an intriguing premise. And I have to be honest; I think I will always be interested in the idea of a D&D campaign. In this first issue, the story is straightforward, so artist Max Dunbar is not required to convey any complex storytelling. It is good enough and acceptable for Dunbar to draw big panels and splash pages because this story is three things: vague introductions of characters, fights, and chase scenes, which are big panel-ready story elements.
I want to try the next one or two issues in order to see where this goes. Right now, I'll give it a grade of “B.” I do think that readers of D&D comic books will want to try Dungeons & Dragons Legends of Baldur's Gate.

I Reads You Review: TUKI #1
TÜKI #1
CARTOON BOOKS – @cartoonbooksinc
CARTOONIST: Jeff Smith – @jeffsmithbone
COLORS: Tom Gaadt
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S.
Tüki is the latest comics project from cartoonist Jeff Smith, the award-winning creator of the comic book series, Bone and Rasl. Tüki began publication in late 2013 as a webcomic published on Smith's website, Boneville.com. Tüki has already won a 2014 National Cartoonist Society's Reuben Award in the category of “Online-Long Form,” for webcomics. About four months ago, Cartoon Books began publishing Tüki as a full-color comic book. According to information found in the comic book, Tüki is the story of the first human to leave Africa.
Tüki #1 introduces the title character, Tüki, a male character. Tüki belongs to one of the early hominid species, Homo erectus, which were apparently the first humans to harness fire and to leave Africa. Tüki takes place during an as yet indeterminate time, but it seems to be several millenia after the Ice Age changed the world 2,000,000 years ago. During his search for food and water, Tüki encounters a strange old man who belongs to another early hominid species, Homo habilus. The old man insists that he has an important message for Tüki, or, at least, he thinks it's important.
The art in Tüki #1 is printed in the landscape format, so reading it is like trying to read several pages of a wall calendar. Normally, I would be annoyed by this, except that the art is so beautiful, not only because of Smith's compositions, but also because of Tom Gaadt's lush and shimmering coloring. As a visual experience, this reminds me of Walt Disney's classic animated feature film, The Lion King.
The story is intriguing. It takes place in a part of human history in which so little is known, and that gives Tüki #1 the feel of a mystery story. Smith's art captures the naturalism of living hand-to-mouth and by one's wits and the skills learned and experience gained. This matter-of-fact way of survival adds to the sense of the unknown or even the unknowable.
There is always a sense of mystery about Jeff Smith's comics, as if there is a great unknown hiding far back in each panel, too far to be seen by the reader. So I need to read more before I can definitively or at least solidly grade this, but I can say at this point that it's quite good. I'm intrigued, so I will give it a tentative grade.

Review: VAMPIRE KNIGHT Volume 19
VAMPIRE KNIGHT, VOL. 19
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
CARTOONIST: Matsuri Hino
TRANSLATION: Tetsuichiro Miyaki
LETTERS: Inori Fukuda Trant
EDITOR: Nancy Thislethwaite
ISBN: 978-1-4215-7391-5; paperback (October 2014); Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”
208pp, B&W, $9.99 U.S., $12.99 CAN, £6.99 UK
Vampire Knight is a shojo manga series written and drawn by manga creator, Matsuri Hino. The series premiered and was serialized in the Japanese manga magazine, LaLa. VIZ Media publishes Vampire Knight in North America, collecting the manga in a series of graphic novels. VIZ Media recently published Vampire Knight Volume 19, the final volume of the graphic novel series.
Vampire Knight is set in and around Cross Academy. This is a private boarding school with two classes: the Day Class and the Night Class. At twilight, the Day Class students return to their dorm and cross paths with the Night Class. They don't know that the Night Class students are actually vampires. Yuki Cross is the adopted daughter of Headmaster Kaien Cross, and she is also a pure-blood vampire. Zero Kiryu is a human suffering from the curse of the vampire. Together, they are the Guardians of the school, patrolling the hallways and school grounds to protect the Day Class humans from the Night Class vampires.
As Vampire Knight, Vol. 19 (Chapters 89 to 92 to The Final Night) opens, Cross Academy will be closed again. This time it will become the headquarters of the Hunter Society. Meanwhile, Yuki has stolen Zero's memories of her to free him, and she plans on giving her own life to turn her brother, the pure-blood vampire, Kaname Kuran, into a human.
Kaname, however, plans to die so that his body can create new vampire-killing weapons for the Hunter Society. The other vampires are determined to stop him, and that means war between humans and vampires. Eternity is at stake, and Yuki and Kaname try to change destiny.
So the Vampire Knight manga has come to an end, and I didn't see it coming. I don't know if other regular readers of the series will be satisfied with this finale. I'm not. Vampire Knight Volume 19 is not of poor quality. It just seems like an untidy semi-rush job on the part of creator, Matsuri Hino. Or maybe I'm in denial.
Vampire Knight has always been melodramatic, edgy, and bloody, and Vol. 19 is certainly that. As usual, all the characters seem emotionally, if not mentally unhinged in this final graphic novel, and that offers some enjoyable vampire soap opera. To the end, it's all crazy love, so at least the narrative is consistent to the end.

INKS: Scott Jeralds, Jeff Albrecht
COLORS: Candace Schinzler-Bell, Paul Becton
LETTERS: Saida Temofonte; Jenna Garcia

Rated “E” for “Everyone”
A little over a year ago, I bought a subscription to the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? comic book series. The school my nephew attends was selling magazine subscriptions as a fundraiser, for the entire school or a for particular program – I don't remember. While reading the fund-raising brochure, I saw that a subscription to Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? Was offered, and I thought, “I wanna read that!” Well, issue #50 is the last of my subscription, and I am still deciding if I want to renew.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #50 opens with “The Scare Witch Project” (written by Georgia Ball and drawn by Scott Jeralds). Mystery Inc. is in British Columbia for some skiing, when they discover that the ski lodge where they are staying is being terrorized by a “spirit.” That spirit is “The Dzunakwa,” a witch of legend that haunts the woods of British Columbia. And, of course, the gang won't let any witch or spirit mess up their vacation.
“The Italian Hellion!” (written by Dan Abnett and drawn by Anthony Williams and Jeff Albrecht) finds the gang overseas in Venice, Italy. Velma wants to see the sites of an historic city. Fred and Daphne are there for the romance. Of course, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo look forward to spaghetti, meatballs, and the annual Gelato Festival. Instead, they find their plans delayed by the mystery of the “Phantom of the Canals.” This ghostly gondolier has apparently come back to haunt Venice, but Mystery Inc. plans to put this phantom out of business.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #50 offers two of my favorite kinds of Scooby-Doo adventures: the mystery set in a snowy climate and the case set in an international locale. “The Scare Witch Project” is the new story, and “The Italian Hellion!” is a reprint from the previous series (Scooby-Doo #56). In fact, both stories feature the kind of faux-supernatural adversary similar to the types that appeared in early Scooby-Doo animated series. I wouldn't mind seeing the Phantom of the Canals, again.
I also noticed something a little strange about the art. Scott Jeralds replicates classic animated Mystery Inc. in “The Scare Witch Project.” The Scooby gang members look like they should, and Jeralds also draws the other characters so that they are graphically and visually similar to the gang. In “The Italian Hellion,” penciller Anthony Williams draws Mystery Inc. in their classic look, but the other characters look as if they were drawn by a different artist. Odd, at least, I think so.
Should I continue past Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #50? I am having a good time...
