Watson & Holmes created by Brandon Perlow and Paul J. Mendoza, inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes”

I first came across Watson & Holmes when the 2014 Glyph Comics Award nominations were announced.  After Watson & Holmes #6 won four of those awards, I decided try the series, especially #6.  By chance, I was visiting a regional comic book store, when I spied a box of comics with a sign on the front that said “.25¢ each.”  I looked through the box and was surprised to find a number of interesting comic books.  That included Watson & Holmes #6, which is produced by writer Brandon Easton, artist N. Steve Harris, colorist Jay David Ramos, and letterer Wilson Ramos, Jr.

New Paradigm Studios' comic book series, Watson & Holmes, is a modern take on  the tales of “Sherlock Holmes” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  The series envisions Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson as Black men in an urban setting, specifically New York City’s famous Harlem district.  By placing them in a modern, American urban landscape, Doyle's legendary detective fiction characters can travel in story directions likely never imagined by Doyle.

In Watson & Holmes, Holmes is no longer the sole central character and shares the spotlight equally with Watson.  Dr. John Watson is now the African-America Dr. Jon Watson, a former para-jumper for the U.S. Air Force and an Afghanistan war veteran.  He currently works in an inner-city clinic helping the less fortunate, while dealing with the financial hardships brought on by a difficult divorce.  The African-American Sherlock Holmes is currently a private investigator and a consultant to the New York Police Department (NYPD).  Obsessive compulsive, Holmes had worked as a programmer for an Internet start-up that failed, which ruined his career.  That led to him becoming a PI.

Watson & Holmes #6 opens at night near the George Washington Bridge in New York City.  The next morning, the bridge is a crime scene when the body of Hazel Wainwright is found.  The NYPD brings Holmes into the investigation because this murder requires a great deal of discretion.  Hazel was the wife of prominent New York City councilman, Dexter “Dex” Wainwright.

Holmes strongly suspects that Dex murdered his wife, but Watson hopes against that, as Wainwright has led the revival of Harlem.  Holmes' research has uncovered the name of Dominique Jiminez, a woman who is somehow connected to both Wainwrights.   Watson and Holmes aren't the only ones looking for Jiminez, a woman who is also connected to a dark underworld.

I don't often come across self-contained, single-issue detective comic books; I rarely come across them as good as Watson & Holmes #6.  Not only is the story good, but it is also riddled with consequence.  Brandon Easton offers a story that is both real in a heartbreaking way and also really relevant.  Easton makes the Wainwrights and Jiminez matter because I cared about their dilemmas and conflicts, and especially their situations in life.

Artist N. Steven Harris has huge upside.  Although his compositions and technique are still developing, his storytelling has a strong sense of drama and makes Watson and Holmes' union and method of working together seem genuine.  Harris' drawings are stylish, defined by a sense of dynamism that permeates each panel.  The colors by Jay David Ramos strike the right tone, suggesting this story's quick pace, without loosing its crime fiction edginess.

I would like to see Brandon Easton and N. Steve Harris work together again, on Watson & Holmes especially.  But I'll take something else... like maybe an creator-owned title.

I Reads You Review: FANTASTIC FOUR #262

FANTASTIC FOUR #262
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel

WRITER/ARTIST: John Byrne

LETTERS: Jim Novak

The Trial of Reed Richards”

A high-ranking Marvel Comics person once said that most comic books published before 1992 were bad, although Marvel is thriving largely due to pre-1992 publications and creations. I know for a fact that one comic book series that was no-ways-bad was Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four comic book series with John Byrne as both writer and artist. After Byrne left the series in 1986, the Fantastic Four (sometimes referred to as “FF”) was never the same. There have only been a few brief runs since then in which the series has approached the quality of Byrne's work on this seminal Stan Lee-Jack Kirby creation.

For some reason, I recently remembered something called “Assistant Editors' Month.” Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter and Marvel's primary editorial staff had taken a month-long trip in the late summer of 1983, supposedly. This meant that the assistant editors were the acting-editors of Marvel's regular titles for at least one month. The result of this was that Marvel's superhero titles with the publication date of January 1984 would drift from the status quo, at least, a little bit. [I think the Avengers met David Letterman in their title.]

Because I have many issues of Byrne's run on Fantastic Four, I also happen to have the Assistant Editors Month issue, Fantastic Four #262. The conceit of that issue is that Marvel Comics exists in the same universe as the Fantastic Four. John Byrne, as current writer-artist of the Fantastic Four, often uses the adventures of the real Fantastic Four as the basis for his Fantastic Four comics.

As Fantastic Four #262 (“The Trial of Reed Richards”) begins, Byrne is having a telephone conversation with Michael Higgins, the assistant editor of the Fantastic Four comic book and the person currently in charge of getting the book finished while the regular editor is away. Higgins is pressing Byrne to deliver some pages, but Byrne is pressed against a deadline because he cannot get in contact with the Fantastic Four.

Lucky him, The Watcher appears and takes Byrne far into the cosmos. The Watcher says that Byrne, as the “chronicler” of the Fantastic Four's adventures, must bear witness to the trial of Reed Richards. Why is Reed, a.k.a. Mr. Fantastic, on trial? He saved the life of the planet-devouring Galactus, and now, victims of Galactus – old, new, and ancient want to punish the man who kept Galactus living.

I had not read “The Trial of Reed Richards” in ages. I first heard of it from comic book fans who swore to me that it was a classic. It may be, but taken as part of the entirety of Byrne's run on the series, it is one good comic book among many.

Byrne has previously stated that some comic book writers, artists, editor, and publishers “don't get it,” meaning that they do not understand what made certain classic comic book creations work – what made them “classic.” In the case of the Fantastic Four, not only in the comic books, but also in the movies and in television appearances, the writers, artists, and creative types don't get it.

Many people focus in on the Fantastic Four as a team that is also a family, and Stan Lee has bolstered that every time he talks about creating the FF. They're right; the team is a family. Whatever pulpy roots and TV family examples inspired him, Lee did create a familiarity amongst the lead characters that was, at that time, new to comic books.

However, comic books are a graphics-based and visual storytelling medium, and in the hands of and by the pencil of Jack Kirby, Fantastic Four had a second distinctive and crucial feature or trait. This comic book was grand and big in its scope. The monsters were not just big like those that appeared in Marvel/Timely's monster comics; there was also something bigger behind FF's monsters and creatures. It might be tragedy, or a warning, or even a message. When the Mole Man appeared in Fantastic Four #1, he was not just a monster wrangler or boss of monsters; he was a leader and a protector. His mission wasn't mere destruction of the human world, but the grand notions of the survival and the prosperity of the creatures that lived below the human world.

Byrne's trial of Reed Richards isn't just a trippy trip through the cosmos. It is a simple story about existence, reality, and the natural order, but it was a story spun on a grand, cosmic scale. Like Lee and Kirby's Fantastic Four, Byrne's is not hard science fiction, but it embraces the sense of wonder about the great big unknown beyond the planet, beyond the stars, and beyond myriad dimensions.

Supposedly, sales of the Fantastic Four comic book has been floundering for years, and the series is reportedly headed for cancellation. Whatever the politics behind that cancellation, the Fantastic Four has been a shadow of its former glory for decades, for the most part. No one has done the Fantastic Four like Byrne did it since he did it. I am glad I thought of reading Fantastic Four #262 because it was part of the “Assistant Editors' Month” gimmick. Thank goodness for back issues, trades paperbacks, and Artist Editions that we can still read the new classic that was John Byrne's Fantastic Four, after the original classic FF of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

Review: WAYWARD #4

WAYWARD #4
IMAGE COMICS – @ImageComics

STORY: Jim Zub – @jimzub
ART: Steve Cummings – @stekichikun
COLORS: Josh Perez and Tamra Bonvillain – @dyemooch and @TBonvillain
LETTERS: Marshall Dillon – @MarshallDillon
COVER: Steve Cummings and Ross A. Campbell
VARIANT COVER: Philip Tan
28pp, Color, $3.50 U.S.

Arriving in comic book stores today, Wednesday, November 26, 2014, is the fourth issue of Wayward.  This is the fascinating new fantasy comic book series from writer Jim Zub (Skullkickers) and penciller Steve Cummings and published by Image Comics.  Wayward focuses on Rori Lane, a half-Irish/half-Japanese teen girl.  Rori is trying to start a new life in Japan with her mother, Sanae, only to find herself connected to the magic and ancient creatures that lurk in the shadows of Tokyo.

As Wayward #4 (“Chapter Four”) opens, Rori is trying to keep doing the mundane things in life (like attending school), even after experiencing so much of the supernatural.  She gathers her “gang” of fellow supernatural types:  Ayane, Shirai, and Nikaido for a supernatural pow-wow.  Their meeting is centered around answering the question, “What does each of us know about the supernatural?”  In the decommissioned subway tunnels beneath Ueno Park, Rori finds the kind of answers that are really just more questions.

The ComicBookBin received the advanced review PDF copy of Wayward #4 that writer Jim Zub sent to reviewers.  It's much appreciated, but do I feel obligated to give Wayward a good review because Zub gives me a chance to read one of my favorite comic books a little early?  Actually, I feel obligated to break into Zub's house or into the Image Comics offices, whichever one allows me to read future issues of Wayward now.

Seriously, I like Wayward... a lot.  Instead of comparing it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I compare it to Harry Potter in the following way.  Potter was essentially a series of mystery novels, in which the hero and his allies traveled to unknown, but fantastic places; they dealt with a growing cast of characters, each character having shifting alliances and secretive motivations.  The endgame was not just to discover a villain, but to also unravel a far-reaching conspiracy that was born in the past and could determine the future, as well as the fate of countless people.

Wayward offers a mystery that is as unknown as it is alluring.  Like Rori following the glowing threads that guide (or lead) her, we don't know where this mystery will take us, but let's follow!  Rori is not so much Buffy fighting monsters as she is like Harry Potter guiding us into a fantastic labyrinth of conspiracies and old secrets.  Let's keep going Wayward.

I Reads You Review: SILVER #3

SILVER #3 – CURSE OF THE SILVER DRAGON
DARK PLANET COMICS

CARTOONIST/CREATOR: Stephan Franck – @stephan_franck
COVER: Stephan Franck with Alan Bodner
32pp, B&W, $4.50 U.S. (2014)

Silver is a 12-issue miniseries created by Stephan Franck (a filmmaker in the American animation industry) and published by Dark Planet Comics.  Silver extends the fictional world of writer Bram Stoker, the author of the novel, Dracula (1897), into the 1930s.  The series stars con man James Finnigan, a thief extraordinaire who plans to steal silver from the living-dead.

Act 1 of Silver focuses on Finnigan's mission to assemble a crew that can help him pull off the biggest heist of the last ten centuries.  The series opens in New York City, 1931 at the Harker Foundation, a creation of the recently deceased Jonathan Harker and his late wife, Wilhelmina “Mina” (Murray) Harker.  That is where Finnigan crashes an auction of rare silver pieces from the Harkers’ private collection and accidentally stumbles into a crypt where he finds an ancient bar of silver.  He loses something during the heist-gone-bad, displeasing his partners, Ed Mullins and Brantley, but he sells them on a bigger heist, the Harker silver.  He recruits a new member of his heist team, Rosalynd Van Helsing a.k.a Rosalynd Sledge.

In Silver #3 (entitled “Curse of the Silver Dragon”), Finnigan continues to assemble his heist team.  He adds Mister Moineaux a.k.a. Maitre Moineaux the “French Touch,” and Hamilton “Ham” Morley, a washed-out actor who has become an “In n' Out” guy.  Now, Finnigan tells them the part of the story of Dracula that is not well known.  It is the story of “The Dragon,” a work of art that is a pyramid made of silver bars.  Not all of his team is buying this story.

I loved Silver after only reading the first issue.  I am always looking for comic books that remind me of the reasons why I love comic books so much:  the sense of adventure, of new worlds to discover, of strange new places to visit, and of peculiar new people to meet.  Of course, the most important reason is that they are fun to read.  When I find a comic book like that, I want to convince other readers, as both a comic book fan and reviewer, to try it, hoping that they will like it – even if they don’t like it as much as I do.  Silver is the kind of book I want to convince others to read.

In Silver, Stephan Franck recalls both the work and storytelling of such legendary comic book creators as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Will Eisner, and Harvey Kurtzman.  As the second issue did, Silver #3 has striking page layouts and imaginative storytelling.  Silver is a gripping narrative and a comic book series worth repeated readings.

A+

[Silver #3 contains a behind scenes look at Franck's artistic process for this issue and also an interview/preview with sculptor Troy Saliba.]

Review: RESIDENT EVIL: The Marhawa Desire Volume 1

RESIDENT EVIL: THE MARHAWA DESIRE, VOL. 1
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia

CARTOONIST: Naoki Serizawa
CONCEPT: Capcom
TRANSLATION: Joe Yamazaki
ENGLISH ADAPTATION: Stan!
LETTERERS: John Clark
ISBN: 978-1-4215-7372-4; paperback (November 2014); Rated “M” for “Mature”
176pp, B&W, $12.99 U.S., $14.99 CAN, £8.99 UK

Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire is a manga that serves as a prequel to the storyline of CAPCOM’s bestselling Resident Evil® 6 video game.  This manga was originally published in Japan in 2012 by Akita Publishing Co., Inc.; now, VIZ Media is publishing the manga in North America as a 5-volume graphic novel series.

Resident Evil 6 introduces the highly virulent C-virus, but where did this new outbreak begin?   Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire, Vol. 1 (Chapters 1 to 6) opens at Bennett University in Singapore.  There, Doug Wright is a professor in the Department of Sciences and Engineering, and he specializes in bacteriology.  He receives a letter from Marhawa Academy, Asia's largest and most prestigious school.  The letter is written by Marhawa's Headmaster, Mother Gracia.

The fact that she had some kind of relationship with Wright in the past is probably the reason that Wright rushes to the school, which is located deep in the jungle, a giant, self-contained and self-sufficient complex.  Wright takes his nephew, 20-year-old Ricky Tozawa, with him because he is failing at Bennett and could use some extra credit work.  Prof. Wright and Ricky find themselves caught in a deadly and growing tragedy and perhaps, epidemic.  Meanwhile, Chris Redfield and his B.S.A.A. ( Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) is looking for Prof. Wright.

First, I have never played any Resident Evil video games.  I did not read the Resident Evil comics produced by Marvel and Wildstorm a long time ago.  I am a big fan of the Resident Evil live-action film franchise that began back in 2002.  When I received a press release announcing the Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire manga, I was excited by that news.  When my VIZ Media rep sent me a copy of Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire Volume 1 for review, I was thrilled.

I like this manga.   Naoki Serizawa, the writer and artist behind Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire, offers one of those horror stories that starts as a mystery about a conspiracy that a group of people are protecting.  Of course, this eventually leads to a horror bigger and worse than anyone realized.  I tore through this manga in one sitting.

I think Professor Doug Wright and his nephew Ricky Tozawa are good characters.  The reason is because they are two-things necessary in mystery and even horror fiction – open to the mystery, adventurous, and fearless enough/foolish enough to run into the belly of the beast that will eat them or turn them into zombies.  I am surprised that this story can be contained in five volumes.  Once again, I will admit my love of the Resident Evil movies, as I heartily recommend the VIZ Signature title, Resident Evil: The Marhawa Desire, to you, dear readers.

I Reads You Review: DJANGO/ZORRO #1

DJANGO/ZORRO #1
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT/Vertigo (DC Comics) – @dynamitecomics

WRITERS: Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner
ART: Esteve Polls
COLORS: Brennan Wagner
LETTERS: Simon Bowland
EXECUTIVE EDITOR: Reginald Hudlin
COVER: Jae Lee with June Chung
VARIANT COVERS: Francesco Francavilla (Cover B); Matt Wagner with Brennan Wagner (Cover C)
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S.

Rated T+

Dynamite Entertainment, in association with DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, present an exciting new comic book miniseries based on licensed properties,  Django/ZorroDjango Freeman, the hero of Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning film, Django Unchained, joins forces with Don Diego de la Vega, better known as Zorro, the legendary fictional character created in 1919 by New York–based pulp writer Johnston McCulley.

For almost a century, Zorro (the Spanish word for “fox”) has appeared in countless movies, television series, comic books, and stories.   Django/Zorro is the first new story starring Django Freeman since his film debut almost two years ago.  [Vertigo did publish a comic book adaptation of Django Unchained as a miniseries, beginning in 2013, so this isn't Django's first comic book appearance.]   Django/Zorro is written by Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner, drawn by Esteve Polls, colored by Brennan Wagner, and lettered by Simon Bowland.

Django/Zorro #1 opens several years after the events depicted in Django Unchained.  According to the back story to this series (provided by Dynamite), Django is still a bounty hunter.  He has settled his wife, Broomhilda, near Chicago, and is working in the western states to avoid the bounty on his head back east.  As the story begins, Django encounters the aged and sophisticated Don Diego de la Vega and his man-servant, Bernardo.  Django, of course, does not know that Don Diego is also Zorro.

After Django shows his shooting skills with a pistol, Don Diego hires him as a bodyguard.  Django is fascinated by this unusual older man, who reminds him of a deceased old friend (King Schultz).  Don Diego is also the first White man who seems unconcerned with Django's skin color.  Now, Django will follow his new boss on an adventure in which he will discover that slavery in these United States isn't just for Black folks.

First, I have to say that Esteve Polls is one of those comic book artists perfect for drawing comic book Westerns.  The Spanish artist's style and storytelling recall the late, great artist of Western comic books, John Severin.  In this first issue, Matt Wagner's script merely teases what his and Tarantino's story will offer in later issues, but still, it is a very good tease.  As first issues go, this is the kind that entices you to keep reading.

Review: PUNKS: The Comic #2

PUNKS: THE COMIC #2
IMAGE COMICS – @ImageComics

CREATORS:  Joshua Hale Fialkov and Kody Chamberlain – @JoshFialkov @KodyChamberlain
COVER: Kody Chamberlain
VARIANT COVER: Jeff Lemire
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (November 2014)

Rated T+ / Teen Plus

I have added a new comic book to my must-read list.  It's Punks: The Comic, and the second issue recently arrived.  This new series is actually a revival of writer Joshua Hale Fialkov (The Ultimates) and artist Kody Chamberlain's (Sweets) 2007 small press comic book, Punks.  Chamberlain produces Punks' “original art” by cutting up various photographic images and compiling them to create the characters, settings, and storytelling.  Punks may be part of what Wired Magazine called “cut-and-past” culture.  Punks: The Comic stars the screwy quartet of  Dog, Skull, Fist, and Abe Lincoln.

As Punks: The Comic #2 opens, Skull and Abe witness the arrival of “Superdog,” who drops from the sky like a falling star.  This new-fangled canine looks almost identical to Dog.  Perhaps, he will be a better roommate than plain-ol' Dog; at least, Fist agrees.  When Superdog's true colors are revealed in a yellow stream, the out-with-the-old Dog will have to stop the in-with-the-new Superdog.

[Punks: The Comic #2 includes some story pages from the original Punks comix.]

The cut-and-paste, do-it-yourself aesthetic of Punks: The Comics seems a little strange at first, but this is a comic book that gets better with each issue.  “Irreverent” does not seem to be a strong enough word to describe the kind of humor produced by Fialkov and Chamberlain.  And “witty” sure as hell doesn't hack it.

For me, the animations that Terry Gilliam created for Monty Python's Flying Circus and Monty Python, in general, come to mind when I read this comic book.  Punks is pungent and potent like British satire and as beguiling as the best of it.  Indeed, it is as if Fialkov and Chamberlain have formed their own surreal comedy troupe.  Punks certainly seems like the beast that will devour the staid yuck-yuck pamphlets that pass for humor in American comic books.

Readers looking for something truly different and truly good in comic books will want Punks: The Comic.

“The Enemy of My Enemy”

Deathlok is a Marvel Comics cyborg character that first appeared in Astonishing Tales #25 (cover date: August 1974).  Also known as “Deathlok the Demolisher,” he was created by artist Rich Buckler and writer Doug Moench.  There have been several different versions of the character, but the recurring theme for all these characters was that a dead human was reanimated with cybernetic technology and became Deathlok.

Now, there is a new Deathlok, and he appeared in the eight-issue event miniseries, Original Sin.  This Deathlok is Henry Hayes (an African-American), who works for Medics Without Borders, a job that cost him a leg.  Hayes received a composite fibers prosthesis from a company called Biotek, but the company also placed him under mind-control.  Apparently, Hayes is now an operative who works as an assassin, killer, and soldier.  Henry Hayes is the star of a new Deathlok comic book series from writer Nathan Edmondson, artist Mike Perkins, colorist Andy Troy, and letterer Joe Sabino.

Deathlok #1 (“The Enemy of My Enemy”) finds Henry getting some fine-tuning on his Biotek prosthesis.  A week later, he is on a mission in Ludzern, Switzerland.  Back home, Henry's teenaged daughter, Aria, is mostly ignoring him.  S.H.I.E.L.D isn't ignoring him, however, as Director Maria Hill has assigned Agent Hope, a researcher, to investigate Deathlok.

I really like Mike Perkins' art in this first issue.  It seems like a blend of Bryan Hitch and styles not seen since the 1970s and 80s, especially in the depiction of human anatomy and of the domestic scenes.  Nathan Edmondson, who can write intriguing stories, does just that here.  Deathlok #1 is a well-put together first issue.  I am curious enough to read more issues, but I don't see myself paying $3.99 per issue for the pleasure of reading this new Deathlok past the first story arc.  That might change if I hear things about the second arc that really intrigues me.

PREACHING TIME: By the way, I have nothing against Nathan Edmondson.  I always enjoy his writing.  However, I have to admire the contortions through which Marvel Comics will go in order to avoid hiring Black writers, even on books starring African-American characters.

I had to laugh at Marvel Studios' announcement of a Black Panther movie, when I know that no Black man will play a major part in this movie beyond Chadwick Boseman as the film's star.  I don't see a Black woman doing much in the film other than playing a small supporting role, either.  Will a Black man or woman ever write, direct, or produce a Marvel feature film?  I certainly don't see that happening during this round of films that Marvel has mapped out to the year 2028 (or 2029). PREACHING TIME OVER

Oh, yeah.  Once again, Deathlok #1 is good and has potential.
