“Meet the Jetsons”
“The Jetsons” was an animated situation comedy produced by Hanna-Barbera. It originally aired during prime time from September 1962, to March 1963 for 24 episodes on ABC. “The Jetsons” titular family was Hanna-Barbera's Space Age counterpart to “The Flintstones,” a TV series in which the family lives in a Stone Age-like world. The Jetsons live in the futurist Orbit City, where the buildings hover far above the surface of Earth.
The family was George Jetson (the main character), a loving family man; Jane Jetson, George's wife, mother of their two children, and a homemaker; Judy Angela Jetson, their 16-year-old daughter and a high school student; Elroy Jetson, their highly-intelligent six and a half year old son. The lead cast also included Rosie, the Jetsons' household robot, whom the family loves and will not replace although she is an outdated model. Astro is the Jetsons' family dog and is Elroy's best buddy and one of George's best pals.
DC Comics has been reinventing and re-imagining classic Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoons in new comic book series since early 2016, the best example being Scooby Apocalypse, which is “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?” with a sci-fi, monster apocalyptic twist. “The Jetsons” are re-imagined in the new six-issue miniseries, The Jetsons. It is written by Jimmy Palmiotti; drawn by Pier Brito; colored by Alex Sinclair; and lettered by Dave Sharpe.
The Jetsons #1 opens in a post-apocalyptic world. The family is still comprised of George Jetson; his boy, Elroy; daughter, Judy; and Jane, his wife. And their home is still located in a city that floats above the surface, but in this alternate Jetsons scenario, the surface of the Earth is entirely water. Jane is no longer a homemaker, she is a scientist and she has bad news about the fate of the planet for her fellow scientists at the International Space Station. This scenario also presents Elroy as older, and he and his friend, Lake Cogswell, are about to start something big.
Although this version of “The Jetsons,” is set in a darker, apocalyptic world, writer Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Pier Brito present a bright and colorful future that is closer to the future scenarios presented in DC Comics titles in the 1960s and 1970s. Alex Sinclair's colors accentuate this hopeful future of helpful technology that makes that aftermath of “extinction level events” and apocalypse quite livable.
The Jetsons is similar in tone to the settings of the happy 1950s to early 1960s family sitcoms that are now a staple of digital sub-channels like MeTV and AntennaTV. Apparently, the nuclear family can survive decades (and centuries) of social change, societal upheaval, and the end-of-the-world. In the end, the nuclear family rocks the casbah and the apocalypse. And, if the first issue is any indication, those pesky brown people and darkies still barely register (although there are hints of things ominous beneath the waves and in the past).
Still, The Jetsons is an enjoyable read. I have learned not to expect much from DC's Hanna-Barbera reboots/re-imaginations, and that makes it easier to separate the good, the bad, and the ugly and to also appreciate the really good. So far, The Jetsons are good enough to earn a second look.

Review: DEADMAN #1
DEADMAN No. 1 (OF 6)
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY/ART/COLORS: Neal Adams
LETTERS: Clem Robins
COVER: Neal Adams
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S./$4.99 U.S. for Glow-in-the-Dark cover (January 2018)
Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
Deadman created by Arnold Drake and Carmine Infantino
“Journey into Death” Part One: “Still Dead... After All These Years!”
Deadman is a DC Comics superhero. The character first appeared in Strange Adventures #205 (cover dated: October 1967) and was created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Carmine Infantino. Deadman is a ghost, but he was once Boston Brand, a circus trapeze artist.
Brand performed under the name “Deadman,” his stage persona which included him wearing a red costume and white corpse makeup. Brand was murdered during a trapeze performance by a mysterious assailant known only as “the Hook.” A Hindu god named “Rama Kushna” gave Brand's spirit the power to possess any living being, so that Brand could search for his murderer and obtain justice. Brand's spirit takes the moniker “Deadman,” and he becomes a superhero of sorts.
The original Deadman comic books are most associated with legendary artist, Neal Adams, and writer Jack Miller, the creative team that took over the Deadman serial after Arnold Drake and Carmine Infantino created the initial story. Neal Adams returns to the character in the new six-issue miniseries, Deadman, which he writes, draws, and colors. Clem Robins letters the series.
Deadman #1 (“Still Dead... After All These Years!”) opens where readers last left Deadman – discovering that the true story had barely begun! Deadman’s death was unsolved, and even Batman could unravel the fantastic mysteries surrounding Boston Brand.
The story opens in Japan where Commissioner James Gordon of the Gotham City Police Department has arrived as part of a nuclear safety inspection team. However, Ra's al Ghul's League of Assassins is apparently plotting to kill Gordon, and Deadman has learned that Boston's murder may have been a test for Hook and members of the League. Will Deadman gets any answers, even after Batman enters the drama and stirs chaos?
The last several years has seen Neal Adams produced a number of limited series comic books starring DC Comics' most popular superheroes, especially Batman and Superman. I have totally ignored those comic books, but I could not ignore a Neal Adams Deadman comic book.
Deadman #1 is not a particularly good comic book. Yes, the art displays Neal Adams' signature dynamic page layout and also some nice graphic design that is not as dynamic. However, the story reads like something undisciplined or unfocused. Let's be honest: DC Comics would not allow a first time comic book writer to get away with the kind of clunky and awkward storytelling found in this first issue unless he or she were the child of someone powerful and influential at DC Comics' parent corporation, Time-Warner.
I tried to lie to myself, the first step in lying to you, dear readers, but Deadman #1 is not good. I hope it gets better, but the first issue does not make a compelling argument that I keep reading.

Review: THE RUFF AND REDDY SHOW #1
THE RUFF & REDDY SHOW No. 1 (OF 6)
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
WRITER: Howard Chaykin
ART: Mac Rey
COLORS: Mac Rey
LETTERS: Ken Bruzenak
COVER: Howard Chaykin with Wil Quintana
VARIANT COVER: Mac Rey
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (December 2017)
Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
Ruff and Reddy: A Cautionary Tale in Six Parts Part One
“The Ruff and Reddy Show” (also known as “Ruff and Reddy”) was an animated television series made by Hanna-Barbera Productions (H-B Productions) for NBC. It was also the first animated series produced by Hanna-Barbera. “The Ruff and Reddy Show” premiered in December 1957 and ran for fifty episodes until April 1960, comprising three seasons. “Ruff and Reddy” followed the adventures of Ruff, a smart and steadfast cat, and Reddy, a friendly and brave (but not too bright) dog.
DC Comics has been reinventing and re-imagining classic Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoons in new comic book series since early 2016, the best example being Scooby Apocalypse, which is “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?” with an apocalyptic twist.
“The Ruff and Reddy Show” is the latest classic H-B series to get a DC Comics re-imagining. The Ruff & Reddy Show is a six-issue comic book miniseries. It is written by Howard Chaykin; drawn and colored by Mac Rey; and lettered by Ken Bruzenak.
The Ruff & Reddy Show #1 opens in the 1950s and finds America caught between communist/Russia hysteria and the comfort of post-WWII economic prosperity (which white people who are of the Silent Generation or are Baby Boomers call “the good old days”). On television, “The Ruff and Reddy Show” is a hit, but its stars are not necessarily in the best place. Ruff and his comedy partner, Reddy, are “celimates,” and neither guy really likes the other. When everything falls apart, are they ready to try something new to get back to the top of the entertainment mountain?
Considering that this is written by Howard Chaykin, it is surprisingly unimaginative. The Ruff and Reddy Show also shares a setting that is similar to Satellite Sam (Image Comics), the series Chaykin produced with writer Matt Fraction. I was somewhat interested in Satellite Sam, but not enough to really seek out the series past the first issue. I am even less interested in The Ruff and Reddy Show; it just seems like DC Comics is really reaching in its (forced?) effort to re imagine the Hanna-Barbera library. It seems as if Chaykin favors the lost potential or possibilities of the past (this series and his other work set post-WWII) while holding the actual potential and possibilities of the present in disdain?
Also, the story is lost in all the dark colors and black space created by artist Mac Rey. Rey's art looks like the work of someone who misunderstands Maurice Noble and uses illustration software to make ugly Maurice Noble-inspired art. I don't know if I will read the second issue, but I do know that The Ruff & Reddy Show #1 is not worth its $3.99 cover price.

Review: MAESTROS #1
MAESTROS No. 1
IMAGE COMICS – @ImageComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
WRITER/ARTIST: Steve Skroce
COLORS: Dave Stewart
LETTERS: Fonografiks
COVER: Steve Skroce
VARIANT COVERS: Pia Guerra; Geof Darrow with Dave Stewart
36pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (October 2017)
Rated “M/ Mature”
Maestros is the new comic book series from writer-artist Steve Skroce. Skroce has produced a number of comic books over a career that is almost three decades long, including the recent miniseries, We Stand on Guard (Image Comics). Skroce's most famous work may be as the storyboard artist for the Oscar-winning film, The Matrix (1999).
Maestros #1 opens in the magical realm of Zainan, where the monstrous wizard, Mardok, is directing the brutal destruction of the royal family. Meanwhile, on Earth, there is a young man named Will who can wield magic. Instead of doing great things with his magic, however, Will is helping enormously rich men... become enormous. Now, Will's mother, Margaret, has returned to bring Will back to his destiny – a destiny that has been problematic for him.
In the synopsis that Image Comics provides for Maestros #1, it includes a quote from award-winning writer, Brian K. Vaughan, Skroce's We Stand on Guard collaborator. The quote read, "MAESTROS is a masterpiece, with one of the best first issues I've ever read. Steve is somehow an even greater writer than he is an artist. Get ready for your new favorite comic." [END]
I have to kind of agree on the first part. This is one of the best first issues that I have read, at least over the last several years. There are 34 pages of story and I could have easily read another 34; in fact, I am anxious (“jonesing”?) for the second issue. Maestros #1 is exciting, imaginative, funny, witty, and delightfully bursting with surprises.
As well written as this is, I am not sure that Skroce could be a better comic book writer than he is a comic book artist, and he is a really good comic book writer – a natural at writing a comic book script. As a comic book artist, Skroce, is so damn good – he is a freak as a artist – that he would have to become the greatest comic book writer of all time to surpass his illustrative skills. Skroce produces some of the most visually striking comic book art and graphics, and his graphical storytelling, from the quietest moments to the fastest action scenes – are potent, to say the least.
Perhaps, we should not separate Skroce as a writer and an artist. He is a comic book cartoonist who produces graphically and visually engrossing comics, and Maestros #1 suggests that this might be his mightiest work yet.

Review: THE DREGS #1
THE DREGS No. 1
BLACK MASK STUDIOS – @blackmaskstudio
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler
ART: Eric Zawadzki
COLORS: Dee Cunniffe
LETTERS: Eric Zawadzki
MISC. ART: Thanh Nguyen photograph
COVER: Eric Zawadzki
VARIANT COVER: Ryan Ferrier
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (January 25, 2017)
Rated M/Mature
The Dregs was a four-issue miniseries published by Black Mask Studios. It was the creation of writers Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler and artist Eric Zawadzki. Zawadzki also lettered the comic book, and Dee Cunniffe colored it. Described by the publisher as a “meta noir,” The Dregs revolves around a homeless man who tries to solve the mystery of a missing friend who is also homeless.
The Dregs #1 opens in modern day Vancouver, British Columbia, and the questions is “Where's Manny?” That is what Arnold would like to know. Like Manny, Arnold is homeless and is addicted to the street drug, “Listo.” Obsessed with detective fiction, Arnold prowls a five-square block area like author Raymond Chandler's famous fictional detective, Philip Marlowe, searching for clues as to the whereabouts of Manny. In and out of a drug-induced haze, Arnold may unwittingly and simultaneously discover and share Manny's fate.
I found out about The Dregs #1 via a preview in the second issue of Black Mask Studios' acclaimed comic book miniseries, Black (set in a world where only Black people have superpowers). I was immediately drawn to The Dregs because of its cannibalism element. I consider this comic book to have science fiction elements, and I have been morbidly fascinated by cannibalism in science fiction ever since I first saw the film Soylent Green (1973) decades ago.
There is a hopeless Don Quixote element to The Dregs, which is married to a detective fiction style that recalls David Cronenberg's film, Naked Lunch (an adaptation of William Burroughs novel). I think the later issues of this series played with themes of celebrity and gentrification, as well as cannibalism. However, this issue's keen ersatz take on the P.I. results in an intense, engaging story.
The Dregs #1 is a fascinating, post-modern, detective comic book that looks to the past, but takes its own path. That is unlike so much of comic book crime fiction, which slavishly replicates the crime fiction of book publishing and film-making establishment. This is an original work on the part of writers Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler. This is stunning work on the part of artist Eric Zawadzki, via his striking page layout and graphic design.

Ragman created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert
Chapter One: “Return Fire”
Ragman is a DC Comics superhero and vigilante of the mystical variety. He first appeared in the comic book Ragman #1 (cover dated: August/September 1976) and was created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert. The first Ragman was a man named Rory Regan, and he was also Jewish. The character returns in the new six-issue miniseries, Ragman. It is written by Ray Fawkes; drawn by Inaki Miranda; colored by Eva de la Cruz; and lettered by Josh Reed.
Ragman #1 (“Return Fire”) opens six months earlier “somewhere in the Israeli desert.” Rory “Twig” Harper is part of a five-man military unit that is raiding a “holy temple” built into a cliff side. Hidden deep within this temple is a tomb containing a great treasure. Just when these men are sure they have found the treasure, a rival unit attacks, and Sarge, Miller, Droopy, and Frank are killed. Now, Rory is back in Gotham City and plagued by the death of his partners. He battles his survivors guilt, not realizing that something from within the tomb has followed him home.
I think that Warner Bros. Pictures and its sister corporate types, including DC Comics, should stop using the term “visionary” to describe the hacks, freelancers and contractors they hire to produce entertainment. Warner Bros. frequently refers to Zack Snyder as a “visionary,” when all he is is a film director in love with special effects, explosions, and Michael Bay. Is Ray Fawkes and Inaki Miranda's “re-imagining” of Ragman really “visionary?” Probably not. So clearly the Warner Bros. c1an should avoid the word until they understand it or recognize someone whose work actually typifies the word.
Now, I am not saying that Ragman #1 is not an interesting comic book because I am curious about where this story is going. I love Guillem March's gorgeous cover art for this first issue. The opening sequence in the tomb is very exciting and a little scary. I don't care for the group counseling session scenes. I'm not a big fan of group counseling scenes in the stories I read (or movies and TV I watch).
There are some interesting nuggets in Fawkes' story. Miranda is a solid artist, and his creature designs are good. The coloring overwhelms Miranda's art, however. But... I'll give the second issue a try. I recommend this to people who are fans of the character, if such fans exist.

Review: RISE OF THE BLACK PANTHER #1
RISE OF THE BLACK PANTHER No. 1
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel

STORY: Evan Narcisse with Ta-Nehisi Coates (consultant)
ART: Paul Renaud
COLORS: Stephane Paitreau
LETTERS: VC's Joe Sabino
COVER: Brian Stelfreeze
VARIANT COVERS: Paul Renaud; Chris Sprouse and Karl Story with Laura Martin; Tyler Kirkham with Arif Prianto
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (March 2018)
Black Panther created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
Rated “T”
“The King at the End of Everything”
Black Panther is a Marvel Comics superhero created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. He first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 (cover dated: July 1966). Black Panther is T'Challa, the king and protector of the (fictional) African nation of Wakanda. Black Panther was also the first Black superhero is mainstream American comic books.
As we approach the release date of the highly-anticipated theatrical Black Panther film from Disney/Marvel Studios, we will see more Black Panther-related comic books from Marvel Comics. One of them is the new miniseries, Rise of the Black Panther. It is written by Evan Narcisse with Ta-Nehisi Coates, the writer of the ongoing Black Panther comic book, acting as consultant. Paul Renaud is the artist. Stēphane Paitreau is the colorist, and Joe Sabino is the letterer.
Rise of the Black Panther #1 (“The King at the End of Everything”) is narrated first by Queen N'Yami, the wife of King T'Chaka and the mother of T'Challa, and then by Queen Ramonda, the second wife of T'Chaka and second mother to T'Challa. The story opens with during World War II where a famous American hero strikes a bargain and friendship with Azzuri, the Panther King of Wakanda and the father of T'Chaka and grandfather of T'Challa.
Azzuri is determined to keep the existence and the whereabouts of his kingdom, Wakanda, a secret. Because of its wealth, technology, and especially because of its greatest natural resource, outsiders and outside entities with continue to search for the legendary kingdom – including some of the most evil people on Earth.
One of the things that Rise of the Black Panther has going for it is that Brian Stelfreeze is the series cover artist. Stelfreeze was the opening series artist on Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther series and is responsible for most of that series' conceptual and graphic design. Stelfreeze provides a striking painted cover for the Rise of the Black Panther #1, and, far as I can tell, also for the second issue.
Evan Narcisse gathers many of the elements from previous Black Panther comic books and brings them together to form a gripping, suspenseful, and thrilling tale of the history of the Black Panther. It starts during WWII, the dawn of the American superhero, and also the point in time when Wakanda begins its inevitable track to joining the world. Narcisse gives the story the feel of a “lost world” story that is part Arthur Conan Doyle and part Golden Age comic book. If the rest of this series is like the first issue, it will be a thoroughly readable and enjoyable.
The series artist is rising star Paul Renaud, whose art was excellent in the shockingly good Generations: Sam Wilson Captain America & Steve Rogers Captain America #1. Renaud's storytelling is quite good here, but his stylish art is a revelation. Renaud and colorist Stēphane Paitreau create a rich tapestry of graphical storytelling that recalls narrative paintings. Rich in detail, backgrounds, sets, and environment, Renaud's art is fitting for a tale of kings and kings' sons. Joe Sabino's lettering strikes the perfect tone and and enhances the story.
I was not sure of what I should expect of Rise of the Black Panther #1, but after reading this excellent first issue, I expect a lot of the rest of it.

Review: AFTER HOURS Volume 3
AFTER HOURS, VOL. 3
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
MANGAKA: Yuhta Nishio
TRANSLATION/ENGLISH ADAPTATION: Abby Lehrke
LETTERS: Sabrina Heep
EDITOR: Pancha Diaz
ISBN: 978-1-9747-0071-4; paperback (December 2018); Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”
288pp, B&W, $9.99 U.S., $12.99 CAN, £6.99 UK
After Hours is a yuri manga from creator Yuhta Nishio. “Yuri,” also known “girls' love,” is a genre that depicts romantic situations between female characters. After Hours is the story of Emi Ashina, a 24-year-old, unemployed young woman who does not know what to do with her life. At a club, Emi meets another young woman, Keiko “Kei” Yoinoma, a DJ and who becomes first, Emi's friend, and later... much more.
As After Hours, Vol. 3 (Chapters 11 to 16 to Final Chapter), Emi, Kei, and Kei's crew put the finishing touches to their long-planned rave. Kei will DJ, and Emi will VJ, but an act of petty crime may put a crimp in their plans. Later, Kei disappears and Emi begins a frantic search for her. Will Emi's new-found confidence, determination, and focus falter now that her mentor and lover is gone?
[This volume includes bonus manga, “Chapter 1 (reprised).”]
The After Hours manga is my first experience with girls' love manga. This is a sweet, almost PG-rated-like romantic drama that is a gentle introduction to the girls' love genre.
After Hours Graphic Novel Volume 3 is the final volume of the series. This volume is 128 pages longer than either of the two earlier volumes. This allows Yuhta Noshio to depict the rave – both on stage and behind the scenes – in detail. Those extra pages are also really good for detailing the story behind Kei's disappearance.
I like that After Hours Vol. 3 does not play it safe or predictable, especially after two relatively tame volumes that really were not intense. This final volume makes an argument that there should be more After Hours. In the meantime, the three volumes of After Hours that we have offer a nice story of young love... after hours in Tokyo. Plus, the bonus manga offers a nice reprise of this romance's love-at-first-sight.
