"Comic-Con and Superhero Burnout" by Peter Hall

I love Comic-Con. Perhaps that is because I’ve never actually been to Comic-Con. In my mind it is this glorious Geek Mecca where no matter how much of a fanboy you are about a particular comic, film, TV show, game or whatever else you’re into that the rest of the world has yet to catch onto, you can always look to your left and to your right and see someone who is even more passionate about it than you are. Basically, I envision it as some kind of geek orgy where nothing is taboo.

The reality is probably a lot less cheerful. Oh, I’ve no doubt that you’ll always be able to find someone who's even more into the long-forgotten CGI Starship Troopers TV show than you are. I also have no doubt that people are incredibly friendly and that no weird intellectual property fetish can be too taboo. However, I also imagine that after day one, standing around in absurdly long lines so you can be shuffled into an overcrowded conference hall probably begins to grind down the enjoyment of being surrounded by people who are just like you. Plus, there has been a growing concern over the years that the San Diego con has become far too commercial, since all the major movie studios have turned it into their promotional springboard.

Archaia at 2010 Comic-Con International

ARCHAIA’S SIGNING AND APPEARANCE SCHEDULE FOR SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON

OVER 40 ARCHAIA WRITERS AND ARTISTS WILL BE ON HAND TO MEET FANS, SIGN AUTOGRAPHS AND OFFER EXCLUSIVE ITEMS

In anticipation of the largest gathering in North America of comic book and pop culture fans, Archaia Entertainment announced it will be hosting over 40 writers and artists for autograph sessions and meet-and-greet opportunities at its booth at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Calif., to be held July 22-25, 2010 at the San Diego Convention Center.

Guests of special note include Brian Froud, a veteran of The Jim Henson Company, who will be on hand to sign exclusive posters for the upcoming Dark Crystal comics; actor/writer Michael McMillian (“True Blood”), who will sign copies of Lucid #1, the first comic to come from the partnership between Before the Door and Archaia; actor/writer/producer/director Dan Fogler (“Fanboys,” “Balls of Fury”), who will be signing a preview book of the upcoming Moon Lake, a hardcover anthology of comedic horror stories; Eisner Award-winning creator David Petersen, who’ll be on hand to sign copies of Mouse Guard; Tom Siddell, who will sign copies of the two volumes of Gunnerkrigg Court; Matz, the Eisner Award-nominated writer who will sign copies of The Killer, a popular series originally published in France that has captivated American readers; and Eisner Award-nominated writer Phil Hester, who will sign copies of the Archaia and Roddenberry Productions hardcover, Days Missing. Plus, writers and artists who contributed to the Fraggle Rock comic book will be around all weekend to sign copies of the new hardcover collection.

“Our mission for San Diego Comic-Con is twofold: to thank our loyal readers by rewarding them with the opportunity to meet their favorite Archaia writers and artists, and to reach out to those who may have not yet heard of us but are willing to try something different,” said Archaia Marketing Manager Mel Caylo. “By having over 40 creators rotating at the Archaia booth throughout the weekend, I believe we’ll accomplish just that!”

Archaia will be located at Booth #2635. Here is the schedule* of signings and appearance times:

Dark Horse Announces New "Mass Effect" Comic Book Miniseries

DARK HORSE TO GIVE FIRST LOOK AT MASS EFFECT: EVOLUTION AT COMIC-CON!

Dynamic creative team of Mac Walters, John Jackson Miller and Omar Francia return for a follow up to the massively successful first series

Following the incredible success of Dark Horse Comics’ Mass Effect: Redemption, the publisher will join forces again with BioWare, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc., for an all-new comic book series based on the blockbuster sci-fi action videogame Mass Effect 2 that sold two million copies in its first week and earned a 96% score on the industry-watched review aggregator Metacritic. Scheduled to launch on January 19, 2011, Mass Effect: Evolution will take fans to a new corner of the Mass Effect universe, shedding light for the first time on the origin of the Illusive Man and the founding of his black-ops outfit, Cerberus.

Mass Effect: Evolution reunites the creative team of Redemption with Mac Walters, Lead Writer of Mass Effect 2 and the upcoming Mass Effect 3, writing the story and bringing his unmatched understanding of Mass Effect’s characters to the comics. Walters is joined by John Jackson Miller (Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, The Invincible Iron Man), who scripts the series, and Omar Francia (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2), who returns as artist. The team will be joined by Massimo Carnevale (Y: The Last Man, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who provides stunning painted covers.

“It's exciting to be working once again with Dark Horse and the creative team from Redemption,” Walters said. “I really enjoyed taking this series in a darker, grittier direction—a fact that's reflected in Massimo's outstanding covers. I'm sure fans of the universe and comics alike will enjoy this new glimpse in to the Mass Effect universe!”

"Our first Mass Effect series exceeded all expectations,” Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson said. “We're very excited about continuing the adventures of these great characters and working with the great folks at EA."

The four-issue series offers the most revealing glimpse to date of humans’ first steps into the wider universe of Mass Effect. Opening in a time of war, Evolution introduces a younger and very different Illusive Man, fighting to maintain human autonomy from alien interference, a cause that takes him behind enemy lines and into conflict with some of Mass Effect’s most dangerous figures. His journey from dissident to power broker presents new insights into the Mass Effect saga for existing fans, while the focus on the earliest days of Cerberus provides a riveting story of action and intrigue for sci-fi readers of all stripes.

Dark Horse will be revealing more about the series and cover art from issue #1 at San Diego Comic-Con International. Comic-Con attendees should head to the “Video Game Comics—The Next Big Thing” panel on Thursday, July 22 at 1 p.m. in Room 5AB or the “Dark Horse Comics: Make Contact in 2010” panel on Friday, July 23 at 11:30 a.m. in Room 3 for more!

RIP M.D. Hits Comic-Con International

Press release:

RIP M.D. GETS EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW AT COMIC-CON

First Copies Offered for New Graphic Novel from Lincoln Butterfield and Fantagraphics

Creator Signings Featuring Mitch Schauer and Mike Vosburg 10AM Saturday, 7/24

This year’s Comic-Con International attendees will be among the first to get a peek at—and maybe even a copy of—RIP M.D., the new graphic novel from Lincoln Butterfield Animation and Fantagraphics Books. Exclusive preview copies will be available at the Fantagraphics booth (#1718), at $12.99 each.

RIP M.D—the debut graphic novel from The Angry Beavers creator Mitch Schauer—is a creepy, fun-filled, all-ages adventure introducing Ripley Plimpt, an 11-year-old boy whose ordinary life is turned upside-down when he discovers that monsters are not only real, but are also in desperate need of his help to overcome their very real problems.

RIP M.D. was written and illustrated by Schauer, an Emmy® Award winning producer, writer and designer. Comic book veteran Mike Vosburg has brought his innovative, illustrative style to the artwork’s inking, and Michael Lessa and Justin Yamaguchi have created a whole new look for RIP M.D. with their cinematic color and special effects expertise.

Comic-Con attendees can meet Mitch Schauer and Mike Vosburg during a special autograph session at 10:00AM, Saturday, July 24, 2010, also at Fantagraphics Booth #1718.

Fans are also encouraged to use the hash-tag “#notatcomiccon” when talking about the event to show the world the fun comic fans have even outside the largest pop-culture convention. For more updates, follow @notatcomiccon and @chinashopmag on Twitter.

CHEW #12 Has Comic-Con Variant Cover

POYO TAKES A BITE OUT OF COMIC-CON

Image Comics announces Comic-Con variant cover for CHEW #12

Whether he's just the meanest rooster in town or the Devil himself, Poyo deserves all the adoration he gets, including his first convention exclusive cover on CHEW #12 at Comic-Con International 2010!

Limited to 350 copies, you can show your love for Poyo and CHEW by picking up your copy from writer John Layman and artist Rob Guillory at Image Comics booth #2729. Layman and Guillory will also have a very limited number of copies of CHEW: THE OMNIVORE EDITION, which won't be in stores until August 11, 2010.

In CHEW, Tony Chu is a detective with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he's a hell of a detective-as long as he doesn't mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit and why. He's been brought on by the Special Crimes Division of the FDA, the most powerful law enforcement agency on the planet, to investigate their strangest, sickest and most bizarre cases.

This gorgeous oversized OMNIVORE EDITION, loaded with extras, follows Tony for the first ten issues of IGN.com's pick for "Best Indie Series of 2009," and MTV Splash Page's "Best New Series of 2009." Collects the New York Times best sellers "Taster's Choice" and "International Flavor."

CHEW #12: POYO Variant, a 32-page full-color comic featuring a five-color cover of Poyo, will be available at Comic-Con International for $10 at Image Comics booth #2729.

Stan Lee at 2010 Comic-Con International

VIZ MEDIA AND POW! ENTERTAINMENT WELCOME ULTIMO CO-CREATOR STAN LEE FOR A PERSONAL APPEARANCE AT 2010 COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL

Legendary Comic Book Creator To Participate In SHONEN JUMP Panel Discussion And A Special In-Booth Signing Session

VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), and POW! Entertainment (POW!) are proud to welcome comic book legend Stan Lee for a special signing at the VIZ Media booth #2813 on Saturday, July 24th, at Comic-Con International 2010 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA.

Stan Lee will appear at the VIZ Media booth at the nation’s largest comic book convention to help celebrate the release of ULTIMO Volume 2. ULTIMO (rated ‘T’ for Teens) is the historic collaboration between Stan Lee and famed Japanese manga creator Hiroyuki Takei, and has been serialized in SHONEN JUMP Magazine since its debut in 2009. Volume 2 is available in stores now. Starting at 4PM on Thursday, July 22nd, and Friday, July 23rd, the first 60 fans to purchase ULTIMO Volume 2 at the VIZ Media booth will receive a ticket to have their copy personally autographed by Mr. Lee on Saturday, July 24th, at 1:15PM.

VIZ Media will also welcome Stan Lee as a special guest at the SHONEN JUMP panel, scheduled for Saturday, July 24th, from 10:30-11:30AM in Room 9.

ULTIMO represents a rare East-meets-West production between comics legend Stan Lee, co-creator of many iconic superheroes including Spider-Man™, the Fantastic Four™, and the X-Men™, and Hiroyuki Takei, the creator of the popular SHAMAN KING manga series, published in Japan by Shueisha and in North America by VIZ Media.

The ULTIMO back-story: High above Farmless City, citizens are stunned by the sudden appearance of two floating figures. Are they human boys, monolithic robots, or something much more strange? As the battle ensues between them, destruction and devastation falls on the hapless city. One figure is Vice, who seems to be as evil as his name implies. The other is Ultimo, intent on trying to stop Vice from wreaking more havoc. But who are Vice and Ultimo really? Where did they come from? In Volume 2, with girl and money troubles, life is hard enough for high school student Yamato, but then he stumbles upon Ultimo, a peculiar-looking puppet. Things only get stranger when Ultimo awakens and his archenemy, Vice, shows up. Ultimo and Vice are Karakuri Dôji, the mechanical embodiment of pure good and pure evil, devoid of human emotions that can cloud one’s judgment. Their purpose: to battle to the death to prove once and for all whether good or evil is the most powerful force in the universe.

For over half a century, Stan Lee has been synonymous with superhero comics. In addition to co-creating countless memorable series and characters, including Spider-Man™, the Incredible Hulk™, and Daredevil™, he served as the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics. Lee remains a hugely respected and dynamic figure in the entertainment industry and continues to develop a variety of film, television and video game properties.

“We are extremely honored to have a legend of Stan Lee’s stature as a guest at the VIZ Media booth for a special signing at Comic-Con this year,” says Christopher Boily, SHONEN JUMP Editor-In-Chief. “The groundbreaking collaboration of the ULTIMO manga has been a great success, and we are also extremely excited to welcome Mr. Lee as a guest at this year’s Shonen Jump panel in celebration of the release of Volume 2 of ULTIMO!”

Stan Lee and his producing partner Gill Champion’s company, POW! Entertainment (Pinksheets: POWN.PK), worked with VIZ Media parent company Shueisha, and with JEA and Dream Ranch to facilitate the development of ULTIMO. Champion, POW!’s COO and President, says, “Fans won't want to miss Ultimo Volume 2 as more of the mysteries surrounding the Karakuri Dôji are finally explained. The characters that Stan and Hiroyuki Takei have created together are both classic and unique at the same time, with many different aspects that both manga and American comic fans will enjoy!"

Mat Broome to Announce 2 New Projects

COMICS CREATOR & VIDEO GAME ART DIRECTOR MAT BROOME TO ANNOUNCE TWO NEW PROJECTS AT SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON

At the 2010 Comic-Con International in San Diego, comics creator and Sony Art Director Mat Broome will be on-hand to showcase the first glimpse at two new innovative projects. The first announcement is of a new creator-owned comic series, following in the footsteps of his last creator-owned series The End League with Rick Remender. Broome's second announcement will be of an innovative online start-up that will bring together the top creative minds of comics, video games, film, television and music. These two projects underscore a revitalized creative effort by Broome that has been years in the making.

"I've been absent from the San Diego Comic Convention for years since I published my own books with Saffire and Skinners," said Mat Broome," so it'll be a blast coming back to the con after publishing several games with a large company like Sony, and returning to comics with 3D knowledge, and a software developers experience. It's going to allow me to do creative things with my ideas, and new properties that I could have only dreamed of before and make them more accessible to a larger audience."

Broome leads a dual career, working as an Art Director at Sony Online Entertainment and as Visual Director for the DC Universe Online MMORPG while also illustrating such comic projects as The End League for Dark Horse and Marvel Comics' Legend of the Blue Marvel. Broome has a long history in the comics industry, having got his start working on Marvel's X-Force series before joining Jim Lee's Homage Studios and WildStorm Entertainment working on a variety of projects including his own series Defcon 4. With over twenty years spent in both the comic and video game industries, Broome has first-hand knowledge and front-line experience on the ins and outs of being successful.

"Over the past 25 years in entertainment, I've met and worked with an amazing group of creators, In Music, Gaming, Publishing and even Animation," Broome explained. "There's been no shortage of talented people all wanting to share and get involved in building relationships with other professionals. Launching my own start up gives me the opportunity to "give back" to as many as possible and help grow the business to others who aren't in and around Los Angeles."

Mat Broome will be on-hand during San Diego Comic-Con at Booth #2002, showcasing both projects for both fans and industry colleagues.

Fantagraphics Books to Publish Manga Beginning in September

Here Comes The Son:

Fantagraphics Starts A Manga Line

The publisher of Love and Rockets, Hate, Eightball, and Eros Comix, will publish manga.

After years of development, Fantagraphics Books is unveiling a new line of manga. Kicking things off in September 2010 is a collection of short stories from the mother of shōjo (young girl) manga, Moto Hagio. Next, is a multi-volume series from the GLBT manga-ka Shimura Takako. Each book will be released in hardcover form, keeping the original “right to left” manga style for a deluxe, yet authentic reading experience.

The first book, entitled Drunken Dream, is a collection of short stories by Hagio falling into multiple genres created between 1971-2007. This tome travels through several of Hagio’s most revolutionary and poignant tales that span over the years of her lush career.

In December 2010, comes one of the defining transgendered-centric manga, Wandering Son. Shimura Takako’s ongoing series follows two young friends, Shuichi and Yoshino. These 5th graders struggle with only not puberty, but also severe identity issues; Shichi is a boy who wants to be a girl, and Yoshino is a girl who wants to be a boy. The two find solace in their mutual confusion and help each other cope with their gender frustration while embarking on the complicated journey of growing up.

To celebrate the launch of the new Fantagraphics manga, Moto Hagio is making her first ever visit to The United States to attend Comic-Con International 2010 as a special guest. More details on a speaking event and panel at The Con will be available soon.

Moto Hagio spearheaded the rebellious shōjo in the 1970’s. She, along with a few other women, formed an artist collective called the “Magnificent 24.” Influenced by radical youth culture of the 60’s, American and British rock ‘n’ roll, and European cinema, these women pioneered shōjo and helped develop the style that so most manga-ka emulated today. Winner of the Shogakukan Manga Award, Seiun Award, Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize, Nihon SF Taisho Award and many others, Hagio has earned respect as a Japanese artist superstar and won the hearts of manga fans for the last 40 years.

Shimura Takako is a female manga creator living in Tokyo. Her focus on GLBT issues places her work in a space that’s rocked out by The Gossip and on par with Alison Bechdel. Several of Takako books have been honored with recommendations from the prestigious Japan Media Arts Festival.

Fantagraphics Books (www.fantagraphics.com) has been the world’s leading publisher of comics and graphic novels since 1976.
