Commemorating 60th Anniversary of Beetle Bailey, Dean of American Cartooning Mort Walker Supports the Troops with Special Veteran’s Day Strip and Military Charity Auction

Auction Launches November 5, with Proceeds to Benefit Eight Military Charities

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As the world’s most recognizable Private and comics pages icon, Beetle Bailey recently celebrated 60 years of military mirth and mayhem. In honor of this occasion, creator Mort Walker is honoring the military with a special Veteran’s Day strip and online charity donations, highlighted by a special auction to help raise money to support U.S. troops.

The special Veteran’s Day comic strip ― part of a monthly anniversary series commemorating unforgettable moments in American military history and patriotic observances with a hilarious Beetle spin ― will run on Sunday, Nov. 7.

In partnership with CharityChoice Gift Cards ( www.ccgiftcards.org), the Beetle Bailey Military Charity Auction at www.BeetleBailey.com offers bidders the chance to win two one-of-a-kind portfolios of Beetle Bailey art prints autographed to the winner and donated by Mort Walker, as well as signed copies of his new book, “Beetle Bailey 1965: Sunday and Daily Strips.” Details of the auction include:

-A signed art portfolio of 15 color prints of the special two-week retrospective comic strip series surrounding the 60th anniversary on Sept. 4, 2010.

-A signed art portfolio of 9 color prints of the “Great Moments in American Military History” series of comic strips. The events according to Beetle Bailey include the “Revolutionary War Fife & Drum Corps” artwork; Memorial Day; Flag Day; July 4; V-J Day; Beetle Bailey’s 60th Anniversary; Gen. Cornwallis Surrenders; Veterans Day; and Washington Crossing the Delaware.

-Five autographed copies of Mort Walker’s new book, “Beetle Bailey: The Daily & Sunday Strips 1965” (Titan Books)

The auction kicks off on Friday, Nov. 5 at 6:00 AM EDT and ends Sunday, Nov. 14 at 6:00 PM EST. Participants simply visit www.beetlebailey.com to start their bidding. The successful auction bidder will be able to designate which of eight different military charities will receive the funds from the auction purchase. Additionally, fans may make their own donations to the military charities.

Distributed by King Features Syndicate and enjoyed by more than 200 million readers every day, Beetle Bailey appears in more than 1,800 newspapers worldwide and online at Comics Kingdom™. It is the third most widely syndicated comic strip of all time.

Image Comics to Publish Rian Hughes Strip

GRAPHIC GUARDIAN

RIAN HUGHES’ groundbreaking strip for The Guardian collected for the first time this December

Celebrated designer and illustrator RIAN HUGHES first explored the possibilities of Adobe Illustrator's vector drawing tools with "On the Line," a unique newspaper strip written by Rick Wright that ran in The Guardian, one of the United Kingdom's largest daily newspapers. This December, the strip gets its first-ever collection with ON THE LINE, a gorgeous new hardcover from Image Comics.

With ON THE LINE, Hughes forged a modern design-savvy approach that still tips the hat to classic UPA cartoons and the angular work of Gene Dietch. Bold, graphic and expressive, this collection brings together every strip for the very first time, including some unpublished rarities, in a neat hardback designed by Hughes in a pocket-sized format.

ON THE LINE (OCT100472), a 48-page black-and-white pocket-sized hardcover collecting celebrated designer Rian Hughes' newspaper strips for The Guardian, will be in stores December 1, 2010, for $12.99. YESTERDAY'S TOMORROWS TP (SEPT100434), a 264-page full-color anthology collecting several stories illustrated by Hughes, will be in stores November 3, 2010.

Some praise for Rian Hughes:
"Rian Hughes, the man who's done more for comic book design than anybody else, ever." - http://www.talkaboutcomics.com/

"One of the most successful and prolific designer/illustrators of the past 20 years" - Roger Sabin, Eye magazine

"Try a death tango in the upper levels of the stratosphere with smoky Cyrillic logos wrapped around your fuselage and raw Letraset moire crackling away in the rearview and then maybe you'll earn my respect the way Rian Hughes earned my respect long ago." - Grant Morrison

GAHAN WILSON at the STRAND: Tues, Jan. 19

Press release from Fantagraphics Books:

FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS AND THE STRAND PRESENT: An evening with GAHAN WILSON

Signing and discussing his new book: GAHAN WILSON: 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons

Gahan Wilson: 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons by Gahan Wilson; Price: $125.00 • ISBN- 978-1606992982; Full Color

Three hard covers in an embossed slipcase with a plexiglass back. A complete collection of Gahan Wilson's comic strips, including pieces from Playboy and National Lampoon. Gahan Wilson is among the most popular, widely-read, and beloved cartoonists in the history of the medium, whose career spans the second half of the 20th century, and all of the 21st. His work has been seen by hundreds of millions in the pages of Playboy, The New Yorker, Punch, The National Lampoon, and many other magazines. It’s about time that a collection of his cartoons was published that did justice to his vast body of work. Gahan Wilson’s illustrations have appeared in every issue of Playboy from the December 1957 issue to today.

Gahan Wilson: 50 Years of Playboy Cartoons features not only every cartoon Wilson drew for Playboy, but all his prose fiction that has appeared in that magazine as well, from his first story in the June 1962 issue, “Horror Trio,” to such classics as “Dracula Country” (September 1978). It also includes the text-and-art features he drew for Playboy, such as his look at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, his take on our country’s “pathology of violence,” and his appreciation of “transplant surgery.”

About The Writer
Wilson's cartoons and illustrations are drawn in a playfully grotesque style, and have a dark humor that is often compared to the work of The New Yorker cartoonist and Addams Family creator Charles Addams.

Wilson received the World Fantasy Convention Award in 1981, and the National Cartoonist Society's Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 and is the subject of a feature length documentary film, Gahan Wilson: Born Dead, Still Weird, directed by Steven-Charles Jaffe.
