Manga Anti-Piracy Targeted

MULTI-NATIONAL MANGA ANTI-PIRACY COALITION FORMED

Today a coalition of Japanese and U.S. publishers announced a coordinated effort to combat a rampant and growing problem of internet piracy plaguing the manga industry. “Scanlation,” as this form of piracy has come to be known, refers to the unauthorized digital scanning and translation of manga material that is subsequently posted to the internet without the consent of copyright holders or their licensees. According to the coalition, the problem has reached a point where “scanlation aggregator” sites now host thousands of pirated titles, earning ad revenue and/or membership dues at creators’ expense while simultaneously undermining foreign licensing opportunities and unlawfully cannibalizing legitimate sales. Worse still, this pirated material is already making its way to smartphones and other wireless devices, like the iPhone and iPad, through apps that exist solely to link to and republish the content of scanlation sites.

Participants in the coalition include the 36 members of Japan’s Digital Comic Association, Square Enix, VIZ Media, TOKYOPOP, Vertical, Inc., the Tuttle-Mori Agency and Yen Press. Working together, the membership of the coalition will actively seek legal remedies to this intellectual property theft against those sites that fail to voluntarily cease their illegal appropriation of this material.

“It is unfortunate that this action has become necessary,” said a spokesperson for the group. “However, to protect the intellectual property rights of our creators and the overall health of our industry, we are left with no other alternative but to take aggressive action. It is our sincere hope that offending sites will take it upon themselves to immediately cease their activities. Where this is not the case, however, we will seek injunctive relief and statutory damages. We will also report offending sites to federal authorities, including the anti-piracy units of the Justice Department, local law enforcement agencies and FBI.”

The coalition stated that it has currently identified thirty sites targeted for action.

Participant members of the Digital Comic Association include: Akane Shinsha, Akita Shoten, ASCII Media Works, East Press, Ichijinsha, Enterbrain, Okura Shuppan, Ohzora Shuppan, Gakken, Kadokawa Shoten, Gentosha Comics, Kodansha, Jitsugyo No Nihonsha, Shueisha, Junet, Shogakukan, Shogakukan Shueisha Production, Shodensha, Shonen Gahosha, Shinshokan, Shinchosa, Take Shobo, Tatsumi Shuppan, Tokuma Shoten, Nihon Bungeisha, Hakusensha, Fujimi Shobo, Fusosha, Futabasha, France Shoin, Bunkasha, Houbunsha, Magazine House, Media Factory, Leed sha, Libre Shuppan

Matt Kindt Graphic Novel Being Developed for Film

DUSTIN LANCE BLACK TO HELM 3 STORY FOR WARNER BROS.

DIRECTOR WILL ADAPT MATT KINDT’S CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED DARK HORSE GRAPHIC NOVEL

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced today that the Academy Award–winning writer Dustin Lance Black will both write and direct the movie adaptation of Matt Kindt’s groundbreaking graphic novel, 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man.

3 Story is a modern fable that explores the life of a giant man, Craig Pressgang, whose strange medical condition causes continuous growth. Told by the three women who knew him best, 3 Story follows Craig’s amazing journey from birth to his eventual three-story height.

Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson will produce the film, with Keith Goldberg as executive producer. Dark Horse Entertainment is currently developing R.I.P.D. at Universal, with Ryan Reynolds attached to star. Dark Horse is also developing The Umbrella Academy, The Secret, and Criminal Macabre at Universal, and Damn Nation at Paramount.

“Both Lance and Matt are very special talents,” said Richardson. “We couldn’t be happier about bringing them together on this unique project.”

Dark Horse Entertainment is represented by Endeavor and Gotham Group, with legal representation by attorney Keith Fleer.

Announcing the Return of McKenzie and Argondezzi's "The Next Man"

Veteran Super Heroes find new life

The Next Man, a comic book by writer Roger Mc Kenzie (Hulk, Ghost Rider) and Vince Argondezzi ( Racer X, Speed Racer, Cosmos' Commandoes), revives the story of the most traumatic post war syndrome of all...

The Next Man is the story of David Boyd, an American soldier and hero. Super hero.

25 years have elapsed since David Boyd, Boonie, Doctor Cross, and a host of other characters first graced the pages of comics. Now these characters are being revived, in print and soon to be online.

The nowadays discussed subjects like Euthinasia, and the aftermath of the Vietnam war were not talked about too much in the mid eighties in comics. Roger Mc Kenzie and Vince Argondezzi brought the eclectic Next Man to the independent comics realm in the those heady days, and in doing so, opened up the subject matter to these and many other issues, in quite a dramatic fashion. It's where the award winning writer, Mc Kenzie, of the Hulk, Captain America and Ghost Writer, and cartoonist/commercial artist/ illustrator Argondezzi, later to lend his skills to the majors also, brought about a cacophony of racing motorcycles, government agents, computers, and secret projects into a thoughtful and introspective romp into the Unknown.

"In the light of America's more recent military conflicts, these storylines and concepts are more important than ever," Argondezzi states. "The super hero has always been a fantastic vehicle, an excellent metaphor for the super heroic efforts and problems that our men and women in the military services have to deal with every day, in war, and after these battles are consumated. Rog and I have used Next Man as an analogy for the journey of these brave folks. It is by their sacrifices and determination that we as artists and free people are given the privilege of exploring the future; it's only through the freedom that they graciously secure for us, can that future and it's positive possibilities also be secure."
