Hack/Slash to Be a Monthly Series

HACKING AND SLASHING EVERY MONTH

Hack/Slash resumes monthly schedule with all-new ongoing

Since coming to Image Comics, Tim Seeley's HACK/SLASH has been more popular than ever, with sold out printings of the first two HACK/SLASH omnibuses and the success of HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC, the four-issue miniseries that inaugurated the series' move to Image.

In February, HACK/SLASH returns with an all-new monthly series written by creator Tim Seeley and drawn by MY FIRST MANIAC artist Dan Leister.

"We've brought in a bunch of new readers with our move to Image, and now felt like a great time to get back into an ongoing series!" Seeley says. "The new series will continue the kind of stories Hack/Slash readers love while being totally accessible to newbies!"

"We couldn't be happier to have an ongoing HACK/SLASH series as part of our 2011 line-up," adds Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. "Tim's a fantastic talent and HACK/SLASH manages to compliment our other horror titles without covering the same ground."

HACK/SLASH returns this February in all-new ongoing series by the creative team behind the hit HACK/SLASH: MY FIRST MANIAC mini! Cassie Hack, killer of killers, and her partner Vlad hunt a slasher who haunts a small town's Make Out Point. Meanwhile, Cat Curio, Former Teen Detective, searches for the man who put her in a coma and the murderous cult that employed him. What she finds will set up the biggest HACK/SLASH story yet. A great jumping on point for new readers!

HACK/SLASH #1, a 32-page full-color comic book for $3.50, will be in stores February 9, 2011. Catch up on the adventures of Cassie Hack and her monstrous partner Vlad with HACK/SLASH OMNIBUS VOL. 1 Second Printing ($29.99, APR100408), in stores November 24, 2010; HACK/SLASH OMNIBUS VOL. 2 Second Printing ($29.99, MAY100447), in stores November 17, 2010; and HACK/SLASH OMNIBUS VOL. 3 ($34.99, JUN100415), in stores December 8, 2010. The nowadays commonplace subjects like Euthinasia, and the aftermath of the Vietnam war were not talked about too much in the mid eighties in comics. Roger Mc Kenzie and Vince Argondezzi brought the eclectic Next Man to the independent comics realm in the those heady days, and in doing so, opened up the subject matter to these and many other issues, in quite a dramatic fashion.

Mercy killing, cancer, government corruption and excess were brought to the forefront in this series; It's where the award winning writer, Mc Kenzie, of the Hulk, Captain America and Ghost Writer, and cartoonist/commercial artist/ illustrator Argondezzi, who would later go on to lend his skills to the majors also, brought about a cacophony of racing motorcycles, government agents, computers, and secret projects into a thoughtful and introspective romp into the unknown.

The ever curious floating computer known as Cubit quiries David Boyd's boyhood friend , Boone, dying of Dioxn poison from his experiences in Vietnam…

“Does death hurt, Boonie?”

“No”, answers Boone, hacking away…”But dying does..”

Moments like this were abundant thru the series. At times tense and exciting, at times subdued and thoughtful, Mc Kenzie lays down the same enjoyable weave which readers of Daredevil and Elektra came to love. Argondezzi's pencils and art direction contributed to the rigorous creative pace, structurally and also cosmetically pointing the book in an almost avant garde direction, forcing superb inks from other young craftmen such as Bill Anderson, Jerry Ordway, and others.

After five color issues and a Black and White edition in the nineties from Comico and Comic Company A , the series has yet to be concluded… Now the original series is available online!! Tune in at http://www.wowio.com/users/product.asp?BookId=6723

I Reads You Review: HELL GIRL, VOL. 7/8/9

Creator: Miyuki Eto; The Jigoku Shoujo Project (creators); Gemma Collinge (translation and adaptation)
Publishing Information: Del Rey Manga, paperback-B&W, 512 pages, $21.99 (US), $24.99 CAN
Ordering Numbers: ISBN: 978-0-345-51220-8 (ISBN-13)

Rating: “OT” for “Ages 16+”

Hell Girl is a manga concept created by The Jigoku Shoujo Project, with the actual manga produced by creator Miyuki Eto. Hell Girl is basically a shojo, horror anthology series and revenge fantasy about teen girls holding grudges that turn out bad for everyone involved.

When someone really thirsts for revenge or wishes to protect herself or her loved ones, she can visit Hell Correspondence, a website that only appears at midnight. Writing the name of an enemy on the website summons Hell Girl, who will kill an enemy and drag him or her to hell! But there’s a price (There’s always a price!). When the person who makes the request dies, that person’s soul also goes to hell.

Del Rey Manga publishes Hell Girl in North America in single volumes – a total of nine. Del Rey has also collected the series in mini-omnibus editions collecting three volumes at a time in one paperback. In Hell Girl, Vol. 7/8/9, secrets and origins are revealed, and Hell Girl must save a life, instead of condemn it.

Hell Girl is creepy simply because of the depictions of people being dragged to hell. The creepy factor goes up because Hell Girl looks exactly like a typically cute shojo manga heroine. – one right out of an Arina Tanemura manga. Hell Girl succeeds as a revenge drama because Miyuki Eto succeeds in telling heart-rending tales of betrayal, even ultimate betrayal. When a husband sells his wife into prostitution for a loan, that will get the reader to buy into the idea of payback-is-a-mutha type vengeance. Although the series has run its course, Hell Girl is a keeper, one worth remembering and reading again because good revenge/horror comic books are infrequent. Hell Girl is the EC Comics of manga.
