The Rocketeer created by Dave Stevens

The Rocketeer vs. Hollywood Horror, Chapter 3 “In the soup”

I finally got around to reading the third issue of the latest Rocketeer comic book miniseries, The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror. This four-issue miniseries is written by cartoonist Roger Langridge and drawn by artist J Bone.

The Rocketeer is a fictional character created by the late artist and illustrator, Dave Stevens. The Rocketeer is Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who discovers a mysterious rocket (or jet) backpack that allows him to fly. Donning the backpack and a metal helmet, Secord becomes the adventurer and masked crime-fighter, The Rocketeer. His adventures begin in 1938 and continue into the 1940s (as of this writing). Most of his activities occur mainly in and around Los Angeles.

The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror opens in the year 1939. Cliff’s girlfriend, Betty, is searching for her missing roommate, newspaper reporter, Dahlia Danvers. Cliff is in trouble with the actual inventor of The Rocketeer’s jet-pack, who has sent henchmen to retrieve it. Cliff’s friend, partner, and ace airplane mechanic, Peevy, learns that an old WWI acquaintance, scientist August “Augie” Lowcroft, is missing. Everything centers on impresario and mystic, Reverend Otto Rune and his Church of Cosmicism.

As The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror #3 opens, Cliff is left without his jet-pack. Betty, who has infiltrated Rune’s organization, gets in deeper, with encouragement from a cagey husband and wife detective team. Peevy has a surprise for Cliff. Everything points to a big event at the Octopus Club, but first Cliff makes a stop at The Flying Swan, a bar where he meets the narrator.

The veiled references and cameo appearances by famous Hollywood types are what I like most about The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror. Clark Gable, Carol Lombard, and Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy are among the stars that appear this time. That the narrator of Hollywood Horror might be a fictional version of Grouch Marx makes this a special treat for me. The suggested guest appearances by Nick and Nora Charles and the hint of Doc Savage go a long way in selling this series’ late 1930s setting.

Hollywood Horror’s story and plot are good, but the allusions and cameos make them even better. Bring on the conclusion.

Mario Hernandez Headlines The Latino Comics Expo 2013

"Cartoonists, writers and animators return for the Latino Comics Expo at the Cartoon Art Museum"

San Francisco, CA: The Latino Comics Expo, the nation’s first convention focusing on Latino creators and Latino-themed subject matter, returns for its third consecutive year at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, from Saturday, June 1 to Sunday, June 2, 2013. Mario Hernandez (Love & Rockets) highlights an all-star line-up of artists and writers including Rafael Navarro (Sonambulo), Octavio Rodriguez (Pixar) , Gabrielle Gamboa (Miss Lonelyhearts) , Liz Mayorga (Spunky Cat Comix), Javier Hernandez (El Muerto), Jose Cabrera (Crying Macho Man), Daniel Parada (Zotz) , Crystal Gonzalez (In the Dark), Jaime Crespo (Tortilla), Grasiela Rodriguez (Spadra) and many others.

“When Ricardo Padilla and I first started the Expo, we weren’t sure just how big the demand would be for a comic convention focusing on Latino creators and subject matter” says Expo co-founder Javier Hernandez. “But the response from attendees, as well as the artists, has been an enthusiastic affirmation of our dream.”

A special attraction this year are a variety of panels being offered to the public, including Professor Frederick Aldama (Your Brain on Latino Comics), who will discuss his new book Multimediated Latinos: Film, Television, Web, Comics and Latinos in the 21st Century. Filmmaker Jim Lujan, recipient of this year’s Bill Plympton Award for Indie Animation, will make his first appearance at the Expo, screening a selection of his animated films. For creative individuals seeking to produce their own work, Nathan Sabri and Jacob Kaufman, lawyers with the firm Morrison & Foerster, will lead a panel and answer questions regarding Intellectual Property and Copyright Law. There will also be a workshop for kids, where participants create their own comics.

This Year's Latino Comics Expo is Dedicated to the Memory & Spirit of Spain Rodriguez, who passed away last year, and who was kind enough to participate in our 2012 Expo.

All events are open to the public and are included with paid admission to the Cartoon Art Museum at 655 Mission Street, near Yerba Buena Gardens between New Montgomery and Third Street in San Francisco.

The Latino Comics Expo was co-founded by Ricardo Padilla and Javier Hernandez to provide a showcase for Latino creators and others to share their work with the public. Through published comics, webcomics, graphic novels and other visual mediums, the Expo seeks to share the Latino-American experience through the diversity of the artists and their works.

The Cartoon Art Museum, founded in 1984, is the only museum in the western United States dedicated to cartoons and comics in all their forms. The museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, study and exhibition of original cartoon art in all forms to benefit historians, cartoonists, journalists, artists, collectors and the general public.

Review: PEPITA: TAKEHIKO INOUE MEETS GAUDÍ

PEPITA: TAKEHIKO INOUE MEETS GAUDÍ
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia

AUTHOR: Takehiko Inoue
TRANSLATION: Erni Louie-Nishikawa
ISBN: 978-1-4215-5274-3; hardcover (April 16, 2013); Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”
108pp, Color, $24.99 U.S., $28.99 CAN

Takehiko Inoue is the famed creator of two acclaimed basketball manga, Slam Dunk and Real. He also produces Vagabond, a manga that dramatizes the real-life figure, Miyamoto Musashi, perhaps the most celebrated samurai of all time. Pepita: Takehiko Inoue Meets Gaudi is a hardcover travel diary comprised of prose, sketches, and artwork produced by Inoue during a 2011 trip to Spain.

Gaudí (full name: Antoni Gaudí i Cornet – June 1852 to June 1926) was a Spanish modernist architect who was born in Spain’s Catalan region. Gaudí, the leading figure of Catalan Modernism, is known for works that reflect his highly individual and distinctive style and also that emphasize his passions: architecture, nature, and religion.

Pepita: Takehiko Inoue Meets Gaudi traces Inoue’s fascination with the legendary Gaudí and also his obsession with the architecture of Gaudí. The book is a travel memoir about the manga master artist’s travels to the Catalan region of Spain, the people he meets, and the stunning architecture he experiences. Much of the journey focuses on the massive Gaudí-designed, Sagrada Família. This iconic Roman Catholic cathedral is located in the city of Barcelona, and it is apparently a perennial news item because it remains under continual construction after more than a century of work.

The press release for Pepita: Takehiko Inoue Meets Gaudi emphasizes the “east meets west” aspect of the two artists’ respective nationalities. That is worth noting. The book is about an influential figure of high art from Spain and also about a manga artist from Japan, a comics creator who is arguably one of the ten best in the world. This book, however, is a bit more personal, inquisitive, and introspective, being more than a comparison of art from different sides of the planet.

Concerning the trip that makes up this book, Takehiko Inoue is on a journey to discover and to learn. The importance of teachers and learning is a theme that reoccurs throughout this book. To that end, Inoue interviews Gaudí scholars, Professor Juan Bassegoda and Professor Ana Maria Ferrin.

Inoue also delves into Gaudí’s longings and aspirations and comes to believe that Gaudí had a deep respect and a love for creatures living in their true forms. In fact, the idea of building within nature or “creating like God” becomes, perhaps, the dominate theme of Pepita. With Inoue’s coaxing, you come to see Gaudí’s respect for nature in his works, which are presented as numerous photographic images.

While Pepita is personal in regards to Inoue, there is a generous sampling of Gaudi’s art and an index of the photographs published in the book, so the book is something of a catalog of Gaudi. Pepita: Takehiko Inoue Meets Gaudi is one of the more unique art books I have ever encountered. It is a good introduction to Gaudi, but it is an even better look into the cerebral side of a great comic book creator, Takehiko Inoue.
