Review: BIZARRO #1
BIZARRO #1 (OF 6)
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
WRITER: Heath Corson
PENCILS: Gustavo Duarte
INKS: Bill Sienkiewicz
COLORS: Pete Pantazis
LETTERS: Tom Napolitano
COVER: Gustavo Duarte with Pete Pantazis
VARIANT COVERS: Kyle Baker
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (August 2015)
Rated “E” for “Everyone”
“America: Part 6”
Bizarro is a supervillain that first appeared in Superboy #68 (cover dated: October 1958). Created by writer Otto Binder and artist George Papp, Bizarro was meant to be a “mirror image” of Superman, but he is also an antagonist of the Man of Steel's.
DC Comics' “DCYou” publishing initiative includes the launch of several new series, some of them are “all ages” titles. One of those is Bizarro, a six-issue miniseries written by Heath Corson; drawn by Gustavo Duarte and Bill Sienkiewicz; colored by Pete Pantazis; and lettered by Tom Napolitano.
Bizarro #1 (“America: Part 6”) opens with Superman's pal, Jimmy Olsen, and Bizarro on a road trip. It is all part of plan to get Bizarro to Canada and then, convince him that this foreign country is really “Bizarro America.” Along for the trip is Bizarro's pet, Colin the Chupacabra, and alien visitors! Plus, Regis “King Tut” Tuttle just wants to sell cars to Smallville.
The highly stylized art of the team of Gustavo Duarte and Bill Sienkiewicz is one good thing about Bizarro #1. Anything else good about it, you might ask? Well, Bizarro #1 is mildly amusing, but I did not enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed the other “DCYou” six-issue all-ages miniseries, Bat-Mite.
I can convince myself that Bizarro has potential. I don't know if I can convince myself to prove that by reading another issue.

Review: MIDNIGHTER #1
MIDNIGHTER #1
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
WRITER: Steve Orlando
PENCILS: Aco
INKS: Aco with Hugo Petrus
COLORS: Romulo Fajardo, Jr.
LETTERS: Jarek K. Fletcher
COVER: Aco with Romulo Fajardo, Jr.
VARIANT COVER: Bryan Hitch with Alex Sinclair
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S. (August 2015)
Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
“Midnighter”
Midnighter is a superhero created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Bryan Hitch. The character first appeared in Stormwatch (Vol. 2) #4 and later became a member of the superhero team, The Authority. Midnighter has superhuman abilities and is known for killing his opponents and is Batman-like, although Warren Ellis apparently based him on The Shadow. The Midnighter is also gay.
As part of the “DCYou,” Midnighter stars in his first solo comic book series since his 2007 Wildstorm series. The new Midnighter is written by Steve Orlando; drawn by Aco with Hugo Petrus assisting on inks; colored by Romulo Fajardo, Jr., and lettered by Jared K. Fletcher.
Midnighter #1 (“Midnighter”) opens with an attack on “The God Garden,” some kind of orbiting platform, and the attacker wants its secrets and “toys” (biotech weapons). Meanwhile, terrorists from the country(?) of Modora attack the restaurant where Midnighter is entertaining a guest. This is a time of transition for the hero, but duty calls even when he is on a booty call. Who is Lucas Trent?
Writer Steve Orlando is so cryptic in Midnighter #1. Either he assumes that there are a lot of Midnighter fans who just want a book featuring the character or he plans on mostly starting from scratch with the character. I hope its the latter.
Series artist Aco is talented; I must admit that he draws pretty pictures, but in Midnighter #1, his storytelling is only average. He litters the page with a smattering of tiny panels. I think that Aco does this to depict Midnighter's tactical ability to see multiple points of view and to predict his opponent's every move. In terms of storytelling, splattering panels across the page creates static that disrupts the ability of a series of static images to tell a story.
My prediction is that this new Midnighter comic book series is a short-timer. I would be surprised if it lasts a year.

Review: ARCHIE VS. PREDATOR #4
DARK HORSE COMICS in association with Archie Comics – @DarkHorseComics and @ArchieComics
[This review first appeared on Patreon.]
WRITER: Alex de Campi
PENCILS: Fernando Ruiz
INKS: Rich Koslowski
COLORS: Jason Millet
LETTERS: John Workman
COVER: Andrew Pepoy with Jason Millet
VARIANT COVERS: Faith Erin Hicks with Chris Peter; Joe Quinones
MISC. ART: Fernando Ruiz with Anwar Hanano
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (July 2015)
“Guess Who's Coming to Dinner”
Eternal comic book teenager, Archie Andrews, was created in 1941 by Vic Bloom and Bob Montana and first appeared in Pep Comics #22 (cover date: December 1941). That was almost a half-century before sci-fi movie monster, “The Predator,” (created by the sibling screenwriting team of Jim and John Thomas) first appeared in the still-popular, 1987 science fiction film, Predator.
Dark Horse Comics, in conjunction with Archie Comics, has set the Predator against Archie and his pals and gals in the four-issue comic book miniseries, Archie vs. Predator. The series is written by Alex de Campi, penciled by Fernando Ruiz, inked by Rich Koslowski, colored by Jason Millet, and lettered by John Workman.
Archie vs. Predator #4 (“Guess Who's Coming to Dinner”) opens at Lodge Manor. It's and the final chapter! Archie is down for the count, and now only Betty and Veronica are left to face the killer alien monster (The Predator) that followed them from Costa Rica. Veronica has set the mansion to explode, and she thinks she can save Archie's life. Meanwhile, Betty learns that she has an admirer...
I read Archie vs. Predator #1 because I received a PDF review copy of it. I enjoyed that first issue so much that I decided to follow the series. And guess what, dear readers; I am not disappointed, and I am sorry the series has come to an end. Writer Alex de Campi proved that two wildly different media franchises can be brought together for great affect. She was clever in the way that she stayed true to the classic Archie milieu of rivalries and friendships, while keeping the Predator a killer.
The art team of Fernando Ruiz, Rich Koslowski (an Archie Comics writer-artist), and Jason Millet proved that the classic Archie graphic and art style can work with and be welcoming to foreign visitors, meaning the Predator. John Workman's killer lettering gives the story such energy. Encore! If you haven't yet read Archie vs, Predator, the hardcover collection is due in November.
Wait! There's more. This issue includes a two-page bonus story, “Josie and the Pussycats Meets Finder,” by Alex de Campi, Carla Speed McNeil, and Jenn Manley Lee. This trio is the art team behind one of the most exciting miniseries of the year, No Mercy (Image Comics). Finder is the long running comic book series, webcomic, and comics serial written and drawn by Carla Speed McNeil, which won an Eisner Award. Josie and the Pussycats is a classic, mini-media franchise from Archie Comics.
I am a fan of Josie and the Pussycats going back to my childhood. I love this two-pager. Jon Goldwater (publisher of Archie Comics), in regards to your “new direction” comics; de Campi, McNeil, and Lee are your dream team for a Josie and the Pussycats revamp slash relaunch.
