Review: ROBOTECH #2

ROBOTECH No. 2
TITAN COMICS – @ComicsTitan

STORY: Brian Wood
ART: Marco Turini

28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (September 2017)

“Robotech” was an 85-episode American animated television series.  Production company and film distributor, Harmony Gold USA, distributed the series to television stations in the United States via syndication in the 1980s.  Producer, story editor, and developer, Carl Macek, created “Robotech” by adapting, combining, and editing three Japanese anime series:  “Macross” (full title, “Super Dimension Fortress Macross”) and two other anime series, “Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross” and “Genesis Climber Mospeada.”

Over a three-decade period, several entities have published comics based on the Robotech franchise, including the defunct Comico the Comic Company and DC Comics' imprint, WildStorm Productions.  Titan Comics brings Robotech back to comic books with the new series, Robotech.  It is written by Brian Wood; drawn by Marco Turini; colored by Marco Lesko, and lettered by John Workman.

Robotech begins when a giant extraterrestrial vehicle crash lands on Macross Island in the South Pacific.  A decade later, the people of Earth have adapted the vessel's alien technology, which they call “Robotechnology,” to advance human technology.  The ship is now known as the Super Dimension Fortress or SDF-1, and it is the epicenter of “The Robotech Project” and of the city built around it, Macross City.

Robotech #2 finds the Earth under siege by an alien armada.  In Macross City, talented but cocky pilot, Rick Hunter, has taken one of the SDF-1's Veritech fighters out of necessity.  Now, he and his passenger, Lynn Minmei, come face to face with a giant alien being, and neither is sure how to use the Veritech to fight the creature.  Meanwhile, aboard the SDF-1, Captain Henry Gloval comes to a shocking decision on using some of the ship's incredible Robotechnology.

Robotech #1 was a fantastic first issue; so is this second issue.  Like the first issue, I like Robotech #2 enough to highly recommend it to Robotech fans.  Once upon a time, I was a big Robotech fan; now, I have not engaged the franchise in decades, but this comic book has reignited my Robotech love.

Right now, I am looking for two things in this new Robotech comic book.  One, I want it to be a well-produced comic book with good writing, good art, and overall engaging storytelling.  Two, I want it to recall classic Robotech while also exploring new possibilities for the series and also going places the original might have, but did not.

So far, I'm getting both of those things from this very entertaining comic book.  It is as if Brian Wood and Marco Turini have mastered the 22-page comic book serial, delivering lively pop comic increments... so far.  In fact, this second issue is good enough to tease readers back for a third issue of Titan Comics' Robotech.

Review: HOME TIME: Under the River

HOME TIME: UNDER THE RIVER - OGN
IDW PUBLISHING/Top Shelf Productions – @IDWPublishing @topshelfcomix

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

CARTONIST: Campbell Whyte
ISBN: 978-1-60309-412-2; hardcover – 9” x 9” (August 2017)
228pp, Color, $24.99 U.S., $33.99 CAN

Home Time: Under the River is an original graphic novel from Australian comics creator and arts educator, Campbell Whyte.  A full-color, hardcover (9” x9”) book, Under the River is Whyte's debut graphic novel and is the first in a series that is apparently inspired by the worlds of fantasy fiction that Whyte encountered in the 1980s and 90s.

Home Time (Book One): Under the River introduces Lilly and David Watanabe, who might be twins, but they don't agree on much.  December 15th marks the beginning of their last summer before high school, and they at least agree that they are going to enjoy it.  This is going to be a perfect time of relaxing with friends:  Nathan Dermott, Ben Miller, Amanda Holm, and Lawrence Baudin.  They are going to play fantasy games, watch movies on video, and have sleepovers., and there might even be some romance.

The best laid plans of mice and almost-high-schoolers, however...  David and Lilly and their friends fall into a local river.  When they wake up, there are in a strange land where they meet peculiar diminutive plant-like people that call themselves the “Peaches.”  Taken to the Village of the Peaches, the kids learn that these beings consider them to be savior – “sky spirits” that have come to save the Peaches from their enemies.

The kids are trained in the art of tea-brewing in preparation for an upcoming festivals.  The boys also explore and discover that there is more to this world than they imagined... or were told.  Now, they have to discover the truth and find their way home – if they can tolerate each other long enough.

Back in the 1990s, I read an article in which the author stated that he believed children's literature and picture books had become safe.  He said that publishers were unwilling to tell stories that were dark and dangerous or that placed children in peril.  That probably was his perception based on what children's books he encountered, or maybe, his intention was to complain about political correctness and/or be nostalgic for an era before he was even born.

I often encountered dark and edgy children's storytelling back in “those” days.  Lord knows Harry Potter (which began publication in 1997) seems to trade in the currency of death, duplicity, and betrayal.  A main character who is a child is actually killed in Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass (first published as Northern Lights in 1995).

Well, if readers young and old... I mean mature are looking for children's literature of a darkling kind, they will find that in this most excellent graphic novel, Home Time: Under the River.  It is hugely imaginative, and it grabs the readers with its sense of dread, doom, and finality.  We follow the children on many explorations, and there is always, around the edges, an ominous atmosphere surrounding everything.  So even as the children keep discovering in this world of color and natural splendor, there is menace in the garden of delights, making the story richer and more engaging with each page.

Home Time: Under the River may end up being the best or be on the shortlist of best graphic novels for any age this year.  Campbell Whyte's storytelling is a celebration, an exploration, and a display of shifting drawing mediums and graphical styles.  There is more imagination in Whyte's story than you will find in an entire year of most of Marvel and DC Comics's superhero comic book titles.

People looking for classic children's storytelling for their young readers will want to buy Home Time: Under the River, and then fight over who reads it first.

Art Book Review: THE ART OF POKEMON ADVENTURES

POKÉMON ADVENTURES 20TH ANNIVERSARY ILLUSTRATION BOOK: THE ART OF POKÉMON ADVENTURES

VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
STORY: Hidenori Kusaka
ART: Satoshi Yamamoto
TRANSLATION: Tetsuichiro Miyaki
ENGLISH ADAPTATION: Annette Roman
LETTERING: Susan Daigle-Leach
EDITOR: Annette Roman
ISBN: 978-1-4215-9451-4; paperback with book jacket; (August 2017)
174pp, Color, $24.99 U.S., $33.99 CAN, £16.99 U.K.

Pokémon is a media franchise that debuted in Japan.  Satoshi Tajiri created the franchise in 1995 and centered its story on fictional creatures called “Pokémon,” and “Pokémon Trainers,” humans who catch and train Pokémon to battle each other for sport.  The franchise began as a pair of video games created for Nintendo's original Game Boy and was released in 1996.

1997 saw the first publication of Pokémon Adventures, a Pokémon-related manga based on the video games.   This manga series was and still is written by Hidenori Kusaka.  Manga artist Mato drew the first nine volumes Pokémon Adventures.  When Mato became ill and was unable to continue illustrating the series, Satoshi Yamamoto took over as series artist with Vol. 10 and still continues to draw Pokémon Adventures.

Pokémon Adventures 20th Anniversary Illustration Book: The Art of Pokémon Adventures is an over-sized paperback art book the showcases the Pokémon Adventures art of of Satoshi Yamamoto.  This book includes illustrations of fan favorite Pokémon and Pokémon Trainers; exclusive sketches and character designs; manga rough drafts and storyboards; and four full-color, pull-out posters.

It also presents a brand-new manga side story published in English for the first time.  This black and white manga was the first chapter of the Pokémon Adventures spin-off manga, Pokémon Rangers: The Comic.  [Drawn by Yamamoto and written by Hidenori Kusaka, it originally appeared on the Pokémon Daisuki Club website in March of 2006.]

One cannot reasonable say that if you have seen one manga or anime art book, you have seen them all.  I have seen a few in English-language editions released by Digital Manga Publishing (DMP), and VIZ Media sends me one or two a year of their manga art books over the last several years.

VIZ recently sent me a copy of Pokémon Adventures 20th Anniversary Illustration Book: The Art of Pokémon Adventures, so I decided to review it.  I am familiar with Pokemon, but I am not a fan – nothing against it – just never got into it, but I must admit that this is an impressive art book.  Sadly, it is the kind of art showcase that American comic book franchises rarely get, but here, the manga/comics artwork of one of pop culture’s most popular multimedia franchises is beautifully showcased.

The vivid color artwork included in The Art of Pokémon Adventures makes me want to go and find Pokémon Adventures manga, especially any of it that has been published in color.  For me, a big selling point of The Art of Pokémon Adventures is that it includes several examples Pokémon Adventures manga art reproduced or scanned for original art board.  As a collector of original art, that just drives me wild.

This is a fantastic manga art book.  Fans of Pokémon, of Pokémon manga, and of manga art books will want Pokémon Adventures 20th Anniversary Illustration Book: The Art of Pokémon Adventures.

Review: Genndy Tartakovsky's CAGE! #1

CAGE! No. 1
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

WRITER: Genndy Tartakovsky
PENCILS: Genndy Tartakovsky
INKS: Stephen DeStefano
COLORS: Scott Wills
LETTERS: VC's Clayton Cowles
COVER: Genndy Tartakovsky
VARIANT COVERS: Marco D'Alfonso; Damian Scott; Trevor Von Eeden
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (December 2016)

Rated T+

Luck Cage created by Archie Goodwin and John Romita, Sr.

Luke Cage, also known as “Power Man,” is a Marvel Comics superhero.  He was created by writer Archie Goodwin and artist John Romita, Sr., and first appeared in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 (cover dated: June 1972).  Cage was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, but he eventually gained superpowers in the form of durability, unbreakable skin, and superhuman strength.

As Power Man, Cage has been most associated with another superhero, his partner, Iron Fist (Daniel “Danny” Rand).  However, Cage has also been a solo act (as has Iron Fist).  As part Marvel Comics' latest publishing event/initiative, NOW!, we have the new four-issue comic book miniseries, Cage!  It is written by Genndy Tartakovsky; drawn by Tartakovsky (pencils) and Stephen DeStefano (inks); colored by Scott Wills; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.

And yes, this is that Genndy Tartakovsky.  The creator of Cartoon Network animated classics, “Dexter's Laboratory” (also “Dexter's Lab”) and “Samurai Jack,” has worked in comic books on occasion.  [Let's not forget the hit 3D animation franchise Tartakovsky created for Sony Pictures Animation, Hotel Transylvania.]  Now, Tartakovsky returns with his distinctive take on Luke Cage-Power Man, giving this new comic book a 1970s pop culture and blaxploitation vibe.

Cage #1 opens in New York City, 1977.  After kicking some silly villain ass, Cage heads to Chinatown for a rendezvous with his lady, Misty Knight.  When she doesn't show, Cage heads out to find some answers.  What he discovers is that all the heroes around town are disappearing.

I don't take Cage #1 seriously in terms of Marvel continuity (as it is an event or “special” series), but I take it quite seriously in terms of being a fun read.  I won't call Cage! a parody, which to some measure it is.  It may spoof or send-up Marvel's 1970s comics and the blaxploitation films of that decade, but I think that Cage! is probably a love letter to a genre or style of storytelling.

One of the recurring characters on “Dexter's Laboratory” is “Action Hank.”  He is the stereotypical blaxploitation character as a heroic crime fighter and a television action hero, but Hank has characteristics that borrow from popular 1970s and 80s action heroes like Shaft and Rambo and iconic actors like Chuck Norris and Mr. T.  Genndy's Luke Cage reminds me of Action Hank.

In the end, Cage! is probably Tartakovsky's opportunity to do a comic book in particular way that he has wanted to do for a long time (probably since he was a youngster), without having to commit long term and interfering with his film and television work.  The questions is how many readers will care – not who cares.  It is obvious that quite a few readers will care for various reasons, from their love of Luke Cage to their admiration of Genndy Tartakovsky.  Will enough, however, care, which would make this entire miniseries a big hit?  I hope many of you do care about Cage!
