Rated “E” for “Everyone”
Several years ago, I had a subscription to the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? comic book series. I let it expire after a year, but I had been putting off renewing it, which I did a few months ago. I recently received the first issue of that new subscription. Let me share some news about my first subscription issue with you.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #86 opens with “Medical Mystery Tour” (written by Ivan Cohen and drawn by Randy Elliot). Mystery Incorporated has just solved a case and disaster strikes! When Velma Dinkley is forced to stay awake in a hospital bed for 24 hours, Scooby-Doo and the rest of Mystery Inc., do their best to keep their resident super-brain occupied. Are there schemes, however, keeping them from seeing the truth?
The second story is “It's a Mystery!” (written by Paul Kupperberg and drawn by Fabio Laguna). It was originally published in Scooby-Doo #155, a 2010 issue of the Scooby-Doo comic book series that began in 1997. This is another Velma story. It is her birthday, and her Mystery Inc. pals have created a fake mystery based on the work of Velma's favorite mystery novelist, Cal Melvin Cullins, for her to solve. But fate and bad timing throws Velma into a case that is real and is closer to home than the Mystery Inc. gang realizes.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #86 is a pointed reminder for me that I should have renewed by subscription to this series back in 2014. I missed three years of a comic book that I really liked. At the end of my review of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #50, I asked, “Should I continue past Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #50? I am having a good time...” I didn't continue.
Both of these stories are quite good, and similarly are about misdirection. Although most readers will probably figure out what's going on midway through both stories, they are fun because they depict the closeness of the characters. Mystery Incorporated is a family, and the cartoon series that have broken up the family into a smaller unit, such as “The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show” (1983) and “Shaggy & Scooby Get a Clue! (2006). These two series are not the same as the series which feature the entire original cast – and are not as good as the ones with the full cast, as far as I'm concerned.
I like that the two stories that make up Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #86. They put the family in “Scooby gang.” Also, Scott Gross' cover art for this issue is one of the most imaginative visuals and striking designs that I have ever seen on a Scooby-Doo comic book cover.

Review: TOKYO GHOUL Volume 14
TOKYO GHOUL, VOL. 14
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
MANGAKA: Sui Ishida
TRANSLATION: Joe Yamazaki
LETTERING: Vanessa Satone
EDITOR: Joel Enos
ISBN: 978-1-4215-9043-1; paperback (August 2017); Rated “T+” for “Older Teen”
224pp, B&W, $12.99 U.S., $17.99 CAN, £8.99 UK
Tokyo Ghoul is a dark fantasy, seinen manga (comics for older teen males and adult males) by creator Sui Ishida. The series was serialized in the Japanese seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump from September 2011 and September 2014. VIZ Media gained the license to produce an English language translation of the series, which the company published as a 14-volume graphic novel series under its “VIZ Signature” imprint. VIZ published its final graphic novel in the series this past August.
Tokyo Ghoul focuses on Ken Kaneki. He was a shy, ordinary college student. He studied Japanese literature at Kamii University. This book-loving freshman was excited to go on a date with the beautiful Rize Kamishiro, but he did not know that she was a Ghoul. They look like humans and live among us, but Ghouls crave human flesh. Soon, Kaneki found himself a hybrid, trapped between the worlds of Ghouls and humans.
Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 14 (Chapters 133 to 142) opens as the forces of the Commission of Counter Ghouls (CCG) makes its biggest move against Ghouls. Kaneki and Arima, the fiercest fighter of the CCG, finally face off, and Arima has the power to destroy Kaneki.
As I have written before, visiting the Tokyo Ghoul manga is like entering an actual world of mystery. Of late, reading the series is like entering the world of an action movie. It is time for those proverbial final battles.
Tokyo Ghoul Volume 14 is the final volume of the current series. Tokyo Ghoul: re is about to drop into readers' laps. Make sure it does not bite you. In the meantime, the end comes with many bangs. I prefer the mystery and suspense, so I would not call this one of the better volumes. Still, it wraps up things to prepare for the next stage of the world of Tokyo Ghoul. This was a series about a character, Ken Kaneki, trying to navigate two worlds, neither of which he seemed to fit completely. That is indeed something upon which to build.

Review: DARK NIGHTS: Metal #2
DARK NIGHTS: METAL No. 2
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
WRITER: Scott Snyder
PENCILS: Greg Capullo
INKS: Jonathan Glapion
COLORS: FCO Plascencia
LETTERS: Steve Wands
COVER: Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion with FCO Plascencia
VARIANT COVERS: Jim Lee and Scott Williams with Alex Sinclair; Andy Kubert with Brad Anderson; John Romita, Jr. and Danny Miki with Dean White
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (November 2017)
Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
Dark Nights: Metal is the current comic book event miniseries from DC Comics. The series will run for six issues, and will include at least 19 individual tie-in issues. Some tie-ins will be original one-shots and others will be issues of currently ongoing comic book series (such as Teen Titans and Suicide Squad, to name two). Two of the tie-ins have already been published, Dark Days: The Forge and Dark Days: The Casting. The first “Metal” title was published on June 14, 2017 (The Forge) and the final entry in the event (Dark Nights: Metal #6) is scheduled to be published February 14, 2017.
Dark Nights: Metal introduces the “Dark Multiverse,” and is written by Scott Snyder and drawn (pencil art) by Greg Capullo, the creative team behind The New 52 relaunch of the Batman ongoing title. The rest of the creative team includes inker Jonathan Glapion; colorist FCO Plascencia; and letterer Steve Wands.
Dark Nights: Metal #2 finds the Justice League – Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Flash, and Cyborg – in hot pursuit of their teammate, Batman. The Dark Knight Detective, however, is determined to address his crisis on his own and to protect his teammates from the really bad thing that is coming to Earth. Thus, conflict is born and the League battles Batman. From the Amazon rain forests to the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, friend fights friend. Can the Batman and Justice League stop what is coming... what may be destined?
I was not enjoying Dark Nights: Metal #2 quite as much as I did the first issue; then, baby Darkseid shows up, and how can I not love that? Then, there is the killer ending and... the arrival. I must say that I find the inclusion of Neil Gaiman's Sandman (Daniel? or Morpheus?) to be contrived, but the other guest cameos (Green Arrow, Gorilla City) are quite nice.
Dark Nights: Metal is big, but not bloated, which is what I found Marvel Comics' Secret Empire to be. Secret Empire has so much stuff going on, more than I wanted to follow, so I didn't read it past the zero issue. On the other hand, Metal is so is like a streamlined rocket racing in a straight line past omens and portents to the big, freakin' dark arrival.
I think the other thing that is in Metal's favor is that its creative team was The New 52 Batman creative team for the better part of four years. Thus, Metal actually seems like a continuation of something concrete in the DC Universe, something will not be re-birthed and rebooted away – Snyder and Capullo's Batman. Metal validates that Batman comic book series, and Batman is the anchor for this big event which might mean something important to the DCU for some time to come.

Review: SUPERMAN #1
SUPERMAN No. 1 (2016)

STORY: Peter J. Tomasi

INKS: Mick Gray
COLORS: John Kalisz

COVER: Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray with John Kalisz
VARIANT COVER: Kenneth Rocafort
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S. (August 2016)

Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
“Son of Superman” Part One
The last time I reviewed an issue of Superman it was to express my opinion on Superman: Rebirth, of which I had mixed feelings. Because of DC Comics' current publishing event-slash-initiative, Rebirth, there is a new first issue of Superman, and while I planned on reading this relaunch, I had no plans on reviewing it. I finally stop putting off reading...
Superman #1 (“Son of Superman” Part One) is written by Peter J. Tomasi; drawn by Patrick Gleason (pencils) and Mick Gray (inks); colored by John Kalisz; and lettered by Rob Leigh. It focuses on the GenX, post-Crisis/pre-New 52 Superman/Clark Kent. Clark lives with his wife Lois Lane and their son, Jonathan, on “The Smith Farm” in Hamilton County, which is 300 miles north of Metropolis.
Yes, the Kents go by the name Smith, as they try to have a normal life, although Kent has taken on the mantle of this world's Superman (a long story). Meanwhile, Jonathan is starting to chafe at all the secrecy, and young Kent's anxiety gets worse when surprising guests visit the Smiths, including Kathy Branden, the daughter of their new neighbors.
I was surprised by how much I liked Superman #1 (2016). Since Clark Kent is a bit reticent or perhaps introspective about being Superman again, the Man of Steel has an air of foreboding and mystery about him. When he does let his hero flag or, in this case, cape fly, there is a sense of majesty about him. For the time being, writer Peter J. Tomasi is bringing a sense of wonder to Superman – something the title has lacked in recent years, but should always have.
Artists Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray are delivering quality work that reminds me of Steve Rude's work on Superman (and Batman) in the 1990 World Finest miniseries (written by Dave Gibbons). I think Gleason and Gray's work on the recent Robin: Son of Batman was sharper, but I like what they are doing here. I think this new Superman series has great potential.
