Titan Comics is currently publishing a new comic book series based on “Robotech” the 85-episode American animated television series, originally syndicated to U.S. back in the mid-1980s.  The new Robotech, which is a slight reboot of the franchise, is written by Brian Wood; drawn by Marco Turini; colored by Marco Lesko, and lettered by John Workman.

Robotech begins when a giant extraterrestrial vehicle crash lands on Macross Island in the South Pacific.  The people of Earth adapt the vessel's alien technology, which they call “Robotechnology,” including harnessing the alien vehicle, now called the Super Dimension Fortress (SDF-1).  It is the epicenter of “The Robotech Project” and of the city built around it, Macross City.  The arrival of an alien armada in the solar system forces the SDF-1 to initiate a “space fold” transporting it and a chunk of Macross City to the edge of the solar system.

Robotech #3 finds SDF-1 Captain Henry Gloval and his crew bringing the people and some of the infrastructure of Macross City unto the ship.  Rick Hunter and Lynn Minmei, who were on a part of Macross City caught in the space fold, are trapped deep in the bowels of the SDF-1.  Tired of eating rations while they wait for rescue, the duo tries something new.  Meanwhile, the alien armada tracks the SDF-1 believing that humans don't really understand the technology in their possession.

Robotech #1 was a fantastic first issue, and the second issue was not a let down.  Robotech #3 begins the process of impressing upon readers that this new Robotech comic book is not a fluke.  Brian Wood digs deep into the characters, and reveals a Lynn Minmei who is a modern woman, a leap from the being the waif and object of desire.  Captain Gloval and Roy Fokker are edgier, and Lisa Hayes and Claudia Grant, well... there's something more to them than they had before.

Even Marco Turini's art and storytelling suggest that this Robotech is something new.  Turini is visualizing space opera that recalls the SciFi Channel's mid-aughts take on “Battlestar Galactica” without loosing heart of Robotech; yeah, it's still a little cute.  My only complaint is that no single issue of Robotech is enough for me.  Can't wait for issue four – fanboy out.

The United States of Murder Inc. is a six-issue miniseries written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Michael Avon Oeming.  It was originally published in 2014 (cover dated from May 2014 to February 2015) under Marvel Comics' Icon imprint.

The United States of Murder Inc. imagines an alternate history for the United States in which the American Mafia did not lose its war with the Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI).  Instead, in the world of this comic book, the “Five Families” forced the government of the United States to concede most of the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S., the city of Chicago, and parts of Nevada to them.  This area controlled by the families is euphemistically called “the territories.”  [If I understand this correctly, the names of the “five families” are Golanno, Lobombo, Luciano, DiGastra, and Bonavese, which I think are plays on the names of real-world mob crime families.]

The United States of Murder Inc. #1 opens on the day that Valentine Gallo becomes a “made man” in the Bonavese crime family.  Now, head of the family, Don Chucky Bonavese, sends Valentine on his first mission as a made man.  To complete this task, however, Valentine must leave the territories for the first time and travel to Washington D.C.

Not wanting to go alone on this momentous trip, Valentine takes his friend Dino with him.  Don Bonavese also sends his talented hit-woman, Jagger Rose, with Valentine.  Valentine must deliver a suitcase to Senator Fuller, a mission he completes.  Unfortunately, things go terribly wrong, leaving Valentine and Jagger hunted by both the mob and the CIA.  And Valentine's mother, Madonna Gallo, has a shocking secret to reveal.  Valentine was born to destroy everything in which he believes!

I remember seeing The United States of Murder Inc. #1 on a comic book store shelf, but, at the time, I had heard nothing about it.  I ignored it although I am a fan of both Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming and also of their seminal work together, the long-running superhero comic book, Powers.  So I don't know why I had zero interest in The United States of Murder Inc.

I should have been paying attention.  The United States of Murder Inc. #1 is the kind of first issue that makes the reader salivate for the rest of the series.  I practically tore through issues #2 to #6 and read the entire thing before writing this review.

Although The United States of Murder Inc. is a smoothly running operation as far as how a creative team executes a graphical narrative, the entire series tone is that of a rough and tumble, rollicking crime story as serial adventure.  The shocking terrorist act in the first issue exemplifies the explosiveness of the first issue itself and of the series as a whole.

I could not turn the pages fast enough or get to the next issue fast enough.  Readers who like alternate-history fiction and mafia fiction may find, in The United States of Murder Inc., that they have struck gold.  I look forward to the follow-up, United States vs. Murder, Inc. (DC Comics).

Bingo Love created by Tee Franklin

Bingo Love is an full-color original graphic novel written and created by Tee Franklin and drawn by Jenn St-Onge.  It is the story of two women who meet as school girls and fall in love, but are forced apart by the obligations of family and society.  Bingo Love's creative team includes colorist Joy San and letterer Cardinal Rae.

On February 10th, 1963, at a church bingo game, Hazel Marie Johnson meets the new girl in town.  To Hazel, Mari Annabelle McCray smells like cocoa butter and is a “honey glazed goddess.”  Mari also turns out to be the new student at the high school Hazel attends, and Hazel is immediately smitten with her.  It turns out that Mari is also attracted to Hazel and indicates this by delivering a kiss on Hazel's cheek.  Soon, the two are inseparable.

In the 1960s, however, society does not tolerate same-sex couples, nor do families.  Hazel and Mari are forced apart, and Hazel settles for marriage to a young air force pilot, James Aloysius Downing.  Fate, on the other hand, is not willing to let family and society have the last say in Hazel and Mari's tale of young love.

Bingo Love is both sweet and relentless.  The art by Jenn St-Onge is composed in large, puffy circles that result in characters with big heads and large facial features.  This is both sweet and cute, but St-Onge is able to convey emotions large and small and expressive and intimate.  St-Onge gives the story so much emotional resonance with her joyful compositions.  Joy San's joyful coloring makes St-Onge's illustrations leap off the page, turning this story into a dance and celebration of love.  The lettering by Cardinal Rae carries the story forward as if it were a wave determined to transport a love story across the world.

Tee Franklin's story and script is the relentless part of the creation.  Love is love.  Those meant to be will be, whether the whole damn world likes it or not.  Tee Franklin delivers a LGBTQ manifesto as a candy shoppe milkshake that is a stubborn, unstoppable taste sensation.  Hazel and Mari's love is not normal or abnormal; it simply is.  Normal and abnormal are just labels.  Love is love; beyond labels, this is Bingo Love.
