“The Simpsons” is an animated television situation comedy created by Matt Groening. “The Simpsons” began in 1987 as a series of animated shorts that were part of “The Tracey Ullman Show” (1987-90). Those shorts were eventually developed into a half-hour animated TV series. “The Simpsons” began broadcasting in December of the 1989-90 television season on the Fox Broadcasting Company, where the series continues to this day.
“The Simpsons” present a satirical depiction of a working class family which consists of Homer Simpson (the father), Marge Simpson (the mother), Bart (the oldest child and only son), Lisa (the precocious and brilliant elder daughter), and Maggie (a baby girl). “The Simpsons” also parodies American culture, pop culture, society, politics, media, etc. via the denizens of The Simpsons home town, Springfield.
One beloved aspect of “The Simpsons” is its annual Halloween episode, “Treehouse of Horror.” Also known as “The Simpsons Halloween specials,” each episode consists of three separate, self-contained segments that usually depict the Simpson family in some horror, science fiction, or supernatural setting. These Halloween segments take place outside the show's normal continuity and its unique version of reality. The segments are also usually more violent and much darker than an average Simpsons episode. The first of “The Simpsons Halloween specials” was entitled “Treehouse of Horror” (which gave the series its permanent name) and aired during the show's second season on October 25, 1990. There has been an annual Treehouse of Horror episode ever since that date, usually airing in October, but occasionally in November, also.
Bongo Comics, which has the license to produce comics and comic books based on “The Simpsons,” starting producing a comic book version of “Treehouse of Horror.” The title on the cover of this comic book is The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror (while simply being titled Treehouse of Horror in the indicia). When it began publication in 1995, it was known as Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror (until 2008). The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror has been published around September–October, for Halloween, every year since 1995.
So The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror #23 recently arrived in comic book stores and on select magazine shelves. The first story is “IT Happens!” from writer Ian Boothby; artists Tone Rodriguez (pencils) and Andrew Pepoy (inks); colorist Art Villanueva; and letterer Karen Bates. A parody of Stephen King's classic novel, It, this story, once can assume, was produced in anticipation of the September 2017 release of IT, the recent smash hit movie based on King's book.
In “IT Happens,” classic Simpsons character, Krusty the Clown, is the stand-in for IT's “Pennywise the Clown.” In the story, Homer, Marge, Barney, Carl, Lenny, and occasionally Skinner are being tormented by Krusty, who wants to eat them. Krusty is successful at terrorizing the kids, but soon discovers that the passage of time does not bode well for him.
Alt-comix creator Carol Lay offers “A Fungus Among Us” (with Villanueva on colors and Bates on letters). In this sci-fi/horror tale, alien fungi, that resemble Marge's blue hair, arrive on Earth and begin its “Body Snatchers” like invasion. Marge seems immune to their powers, but there is something about the aliens that really appeals to Marge's tastes.
Writer-artist Dean Rankine (once again with Villanueva and Bates) presents “Curse of the Cat Lady.” Comic Book Guy transgresses against Agatha the gypsy cat lady, who promptly puts a curse on him. Will the curse, however, prove to be much of a cat-tastrophe to Comic Book Guy?
It has been years since I have read an issue of The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror, so when I noticed a copy on the shelf of a “local” comic book shop, I snatched it. “IT Happens!” is a nice parody of Stephen King's It, but at 20 pages, the story is five pages too long. It... should have ended when adult Homer closed the door and said “Not interested.”
“A Fungus Among Us” is a nice tale in the tradition of EC Comics and “The Twilight Zone” television series, with a near-perfect ending. The best of this trio of tales is “Curse of the Cat Lady,” which reminded me of another Stephen King novel, Thinner (which he published under the pseudonym “Richard Bachman”). In this 10-page tale, Dean Raskine has created the perfect version of a humorous Treehouse of Horror story.
I recommend this comic book to fans of Bongo's Simpsons comic books. Because of its snazzy cover image, I think fans of the TV “Treehouse of Horror” would also like The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror #23, also.

Review: JUGHEAD: The Hunger #1
JUGHEAD: THE HUNGER No. 1
ARCHIE COMICS – @ArchieComics @ArchieHorror
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Frank Tieri
PENCILS: Pat and Tim Kennedy
INKS: Bob Smith and Jim Amash
COLORS: Matt Herms
LETTERS: Jack Morelli
COVER: Francesco Francavilla
VARIANT COVER: Robert Hack; Michael Walsh
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (December 2017)
Rated Teen+ for Violence and Mature Content
“Run Like the Wolf” Part One
Over the past four years, Archie Comics has gone about modernizing its characters and comic books in terms of stories, characters, and plots, as well as in visuals and graphics. This is a publishing initiative that can be called the “new look Archie.”
The first phase of the new Archie Comics was the the “Archie Horror” line, in which Archie Comics characters were re-imagined in a darker world, filled with the supernatural – from forbidden magic to bloodthirsty creatures. Writer Roberto Aquirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla took Archie Comics to the dark side in Afterlife with Archie, placing Archie and his pals in the middle of a “zombie apocalypse.”
Earlier this year, Jughead Jones went to the dark and hungry side in Jughead: The Hunger, a one-shot comic book that revealed that classic pal of Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, was descended from a line of werewolves. He started killing, and Betty Cooper, one of Archie's girlfriends and a werewolf hunter, started hunting him. Archie and Betty could not save Jughead, and he skipped town after killing Reggie Mantle.
Jughead: The Hunter is now an ongoing series. It is written by Frank Tieri; drawn by Pat & Tim Kennedy (pencils) and Bob Smith and Jim Amash (inks); colored by Matt Herms; and lettered by Jack Morelli.
Jughead: The Hunger #1 opens three week earlier at Riverdale Hospital where Reggie Mantle is declared dead... or not. Moving forward, Jughead has run away and joined the circus. He has found some sense of peace, although the circus' animals avoid him. Meanwhile, Betty and Archie continue to follow Jughead's trail, but someone new is about to join their little hunt.
I think the original Jughead: The Hunger was published at a time when I was too busy to track the coming and goings of one-shot comic books. However, because I really love Afterlife with Archie and also the second “Archie Horror” title, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I was determined to get a copy of Jughead: The Hunger #1, and it is worth the effort and the decision to continue it as an ongoing series.
“Archie Horror” titles are steeped in the tradition of the best American horror comic books, from EC Comics and Warren Publications to DC Comics “Bronze and Copper Ages” titles and its Vertigo imprint. Sometimes, it is in the tone of the narrative; other times “Archie Horror” comic books capture the spirit of classic horror comic books. Jughead: The Hunger #1 has it all, and it is also an engaging supernatural teen soap opera, presenting scares and scary teens.
Of course, we are early in this series, but I see teen melodrama playing a big part in Jughead: The Hunger, probably as much as the monster side of the story. Matt Herms' gorgeous colors capture and heighten all this story's moods – from the intensity of the emergency room to the loneliness of Jughead's secretive circus life. Jack Morelli's clean lettering fits in like a perfect storyteller, knowing that it is all about the story.
I must say that I am surprised. I did not expect Jughead: The Hunger #1 to grab me as the earlier “Archie Horror” comics had. I ask myself, “Are these horror titles really as good as I think they are?” Find out for yourself, dear readers.

Review: BLACKWOOD #1
BLACKWOOD No. 1 (OF 4)
DARK HORSE COMICS – @DarkHorseComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Evan Dorkin
LAYOUTS: Andy Fish
ART: Veronica Fish
COLORS: Veronica Fish
LETTERS: Andy Fish
EDITOR: Daniel Chabon
COVER: Veronica Fish
VARIANT COVER: Becky Cloonan
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (May 2018)
Sometimes, more often than I would like to admit (pride?), I read a comic book that reminds me of why I am still reading comic books. Blackwood, a new four-issue comic book miniseries published by Dark Horse Comics, is one of those magical comic books that keep me visiting comic book shops and buying comic books wherever I can.
Blackwood is written by Evan Dorkin; drawn Veronica Fish, from layouts provided by Andy Fish; colored by Veronica Fish and lettered by Andy Fish. Blackwood is a supernatural fantasy about a magical murder in a sorcery school.
Blackwood #1 opens by depicting two men under distress, apparently caused by supernatural forces. Then, we meet new college student, Wren Valentine, as she arrives via train at Blackwood Station. Wren meets another student, Reiko Oyuki; both young women have arrived in this isolated area to attend Blackwood College.
Right away, Wren and Reiko discover that there is plenty that is peculiar about the college, which offers odd, eccentric, and esoteric disciplines. Soon, the two women are meeting fellow new students, who will join them in experiencing something ancient, sinister, and shocking.
You be forgiven for thinking about Harry Potter when you read or read about Blackwood. The supernatural, magical-mystery boarding school/college is a well-worn fantasy setting. Heck, DC Comics has published issues of two such comic book series (Gotham Academy; Mystik U) in just the last two years.
What should make Blackwood unique from other magical school fiction is that Evan Dorkin and Veronica Fish are singular comic book creators. Dorkin is a imaginative storyteller who thrives in multiple genres and who can present different spins on any genre (as he shows in humor series like Milk and Cheese and Dork).
Veronica Fish's illustrations for comic books seem like someone took Archie Comics art and gave it an alternative comics slash Vertigo comics spin. Fish's use of flat color sells Blackwood's garish Hammer Film Productions quality. Letter and layout artist Andy Fish ties it all together with a strong sense of design, particularly in terms of what will make this funky premise work.
Blackwood may be familiar in many aspects, but it works by looking and acting differently. And I had such a blast reading it. Dorkin and Fish & Fish are creating something so intriguing that I think it has some kind of allure... or maybe glamour, but I found myself in the story: confused, scared, and running alongside the rest of the Blackwood gang. Isn't that reason enough for me to recommend Blackwood to you, dear reader?
