I Reads You Review: SCOOBY-DOO, Where Are You? #98
SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? No. 98
DC COMICS – @DCComics
STORY: Derek Fridolfs; Terence Griep
PENCILS: Randy Elliot; Fabio Laguna
INKS: Randy Elliot; Fabio Laguna
COLORS: Silvana Brys; Heroic Age
LETTERS: Saida Temofonte; John J. Hill
EDITOR: Harvey Richards
COVER: Derek Fridolfs with Pamela Lovas
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S. (June 2019)
Rated “E” for “Everyone”
“Highland Horror”
I am continuing my journey through the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? comic book series. Normally, I do this via my DC Comics subscription service, but I let that lapse for a few months. So, until my third subscription begins, I have been getting copies from my local comic shop (LSC).
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #98 opens with “Highland Horror” (written by Derek Fridolfs and drawn by Randy Elliot). Mystery Inc.: Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma are attending the “Coolsville Celtic Faire.” In the midst of all the fun, however, a new creepy type, “the Mad Scott,” begins haunting the fairgrounds. And the Mystery Inc. kids have found their latest case.
The second story is “Sumo A-Go-Go” (written by Terrence Griep and drawn by Fabio Laguna). [This story was originally published in Scooby-Doo #148 (cover dated: November 2009), and it was recently reprinted in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #91 (cover dated: May 2018).] Mystery Inc. is enjoying a sumo wrestling tournament when “The Tengu” appears, declaring that the tournament's opening ceremony is an insult. Now, it is up to the gang to stop him.
As stories in this series go, this one is a little above average. Writer Derek Fridolfs offers lots of factoids concerning Scottish culture, including about dancing, food, and kilts, and there are some bagpipe jokes. Also, Randy Elliot is one of the better modern Scooby-Doo comic book artists.
The second (and sometimes third) stories in Scooby Doo, Where Are You? have always been stories reprinted from the previous Scooby-Doo comic book series, simply entitled Scooby-Doo (159 issues, 1997-2010). The last year or so some of the back-up stories have been reprinted more than once. “The Freeloading Ghost” has been reprinted twice in half a year, and I have no idea why. Now, another recently reprinted story, “Sumo A-Go-Go,” makes another appearance, and it is actually a nice story. So anyone who has missed its previous appearances will get a chance to read it.
See you next time.

Review: SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1
SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN No. 1 (2019)
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel

STORY: Christos Gage
PENCILS: Mike Hawthorne
INKS: Wade von Grawbadger
COLORS: Jordie Bellaire
LETTERS: VC's Clayton Cowles
EDITOR: Nick Lowe
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: Akira Yoshida
COVER: Travis Charest
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Mike Hawthorne with Jordie Bellaire; Marko Djurdjević (Fantastic Four Villain Variant Cover);
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (February 2019)
Rated “T”
Spider-Man created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee
The Superior Spider-Man was a Marvel Comics superhero comic book series featuring an alternate version of Spider-Man. Cover dated between January 2013 and June 2014, the series featured Otto Octavius a.k.a. Spider-Man villain “Doctor Octopus” in the role of Spider-Man.
The series returns as Superior Spider-Man. It is written by Christos Gage; drawn by Mike Hawthorne (pencils) and Wade von Grawbadger (inks); colored by Jordie Bellaire; and lettered by Clayton Cowles. Once again, Otto Octavius is in a new body and is a “superior” Spider-Man.
Superior Spider-Man #1 opens in San Francisco, the city that Otto Octavius-The Superior Spider-Man has chosen to protect and to improve. After dealing (successfully) with Stilt-Man, Otto heads to Horizon University where he will adopt his identity as Professor Elliot Tolliver and deliver “a crucial, end-of-term lecture.” Then, it is off to more villain fighting, but Otto/Elliot/Superior is about to discover that someone from his past has joined the faculty of Horizon. That person is ready to reveal the true face of the Superior Spider-Man to the authorities.
I was cynical. I was ready to hate Superior Spider-Man #1. In fact, I only bought this comic book to give to a friend who reads any Spider-Man comic book put in front of him. I am not over-awed by writer Christos Gage's script, but it is good. I am not crazy about the art team of Make Hawthorne and Wade von Grawbadger, but the storytelling is good. Jordie Bellaire delivers her usually solid colors, and Clayton Cowles delivers his solid lettering.
But there is something about this comic book that demands I read one or two more issues. I enjoyed the first issue enough to maybe read more. So I will say to you, dear reader, maybe you should try at least Superior Spider-Man #1.

Daredevil created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett with Jack Kirby and Wally Wood
“Know Fear” Part 1
Daredevil is a Marvel Comics superhero created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett. The character first appeared in Daredevil #1 (cover dated: April 1964). Daredevil is Matt Murdock, a vision-impaired attorney who was blinded as a child after being exposed to a radioactive substance. That substance enhanced his senses to a supernatural level and gave him a 360-degree radar sense.
Marvel Comics is giving Daredevil the comic book something of a reboot. Daredevil 2019 is written by Chip Zdarsky; drawn by Marco Checchetto; colored by Sunny Gho; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.
Daredevil #1 opens in the wake of the events depicted at the end of writer Charles Soule's run on Daredevil and in the subsequent five-issue miniseries, Man Without Fear. After recovering from grievous injuries and intense physical therapy, Matt Murdock returns to Hell's Kitchen. As the story begins, Matt has already acted once as Daredevil (although apparently not in costume). However, there is a new sheriff in town.
Straight outta Chicago comes Detective Cole North. He has been tasked by New York City Mayor Wilson Fisk, formerly known as The Kingpin – the crime lord of New York City, to take down costumed superheroes in NYC. When he dons the Daredevil costume for the first time in a long time, Matt may end up doing Detective Cole's work for him.
Daredevil #1 (2019) is quite a good start for the new series. First, there is Julian Totino Tedesco's beautiful cover art. Inside, Marco Checchetto offers his most disciplined compositions to date, with an emphasis on storytelling that makes the most of atmosphere and mood and characters' emotions. Previously, Checchetto was good at these things, but his drawings seemed to emphasize style. Sunny Gho's colors are beautiful and emphasize reds and blues to create a sort of rose-tinted Film-Noir look. The artists' depiction of Daredevil's radar sense is also quite nice.
Writer Chip Zdarsky's storytelling here reminds me, in some ways, of writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzuchelli's “Born Again” story arc in Daredevil (1964) #227-231. It is also something of a spiritual heir to the last year of Frank Miller's original run on Daredevil as writer-artist/designer (with Klaus Janson as artist). I don't know if Zdarsky's work on Daredevil will reach the great heights of Miller, but I like how Zdarsky emphasizes Matt's moral conflicts and his past, as well as emphasizing Wilson Fisk as being an existential threat to Matt Murdock-Daredevil. Clayton Cowles lettering creates a nice rhythm for Zdarsky's script.
I was not looking forward to Daredevil (2019), but happenstance dropped a copy of Daredevil #1 (2019) in my lap. I am glad I read it, and I am recommending it to Daredevil fans.
