Archie Comics Debuts "Archie Comics: Judgment Day #1" May 22nd

ARCHIE HORROR UNLEASHES APOCALYPTIC THRILLS IN ARCHIE COMICS: JUDGMENT DAY MINISERIES

Archie Comics kicks off the first Archie Premium Event in May with the most horrifying version of Riverdale ever seen

Prepare for a spine-tingling journey into the heart of Riverdale with ARCHIE COMICS: JUDGMENT DAY, an epic three-issue event set to captivate readers with a tale of demonic forces, moral quandaries, and the relentless quest for righteousness. Archie Comics: Judgment Day #1 is hitting shelves on May 22, 2024 from the Archie Horror imprint.  The miniseries reimagines the iconic Archie Comics characters in a dark supernatural setting and promises to take readers on one hell of a ride in the first Archie Premium Event.

Written by Aubrey Sitterson (Archie vs. The World, No One Left to Fight) with art by Megan Hutchison (Rockstars), JUDGMENT DAY sets Archie Andrews on a daring quest to cleanse an alternate version of Riverdale overrun by demons. After claiming some destructive powers of his own, Archie is forced to destroy corrupted versions of the people closest to him, ostensibly in the name of the greater good. As questions about his own morality and the sacrifices he’s made start to pile up, Archie must confront the question: are his efforts are truly good, or the work of pure evil?

"JUDGMENT DAY places Archie Andrews squarely at the center, acting as our hero—but with the power to choose who lives and who dies, can he truly remain a hero through and through?” said Archie Comics Creative Consultant Jesse Goldwater. “This miniseries raises the stakes more than any title we've ever done before. The fate of the entire world is in Archie's hands."

On top of bringing readers to the most horrifying version of Riverdale yet, JUDGMENT DAY also introduces the new Archie Premium Event branding, which will designate Archie stories that are simply too grand for a single one-shot release. With their extended length and scale, these cinematic miniseries will take Archie Comics in epic new narrative directions, paired with upgraded collector-quality issues featuring cardstock covers, improved interior paper stock, and specialized print finishes.

"JUDGMENT DAY is the first in a compelling slate of events. As we look to the future of Archie, we wanted to translate our success in TV and film to focus that sense of grandeur back to our core publishing efforts. With our Archie Premium Event series, we've imbued each project with an epic sense of storytelling that is evocative of the exciting new direction for the company,” said Archie Comics Senior Vice President Jonathan Betancourt. “In addition to our concentrated focus on elevated storytelling, these new series are also investments for the larger comic book community, transforming what would be a normal print issue into a must-have collector’s item."

ARCHIE COMICS: JUDGMENT DAY #1—with cardstock covers by Hutchison, Francesco Francavilla, Jae Lee, and Reiko Murakami, colors by Matt Herms, and lettering by Jack Morelli—releases May 22nd in comic shops nationwide.

Archie Comics Announces the Horror Comics Series, "THE CURSED LIBRARY"

THE DARK SECRETS OF ARCHIE'S CURSED LIBRARY ARE REVEALED

Archie Comics scream queens Jinx, Danni, and Madam Satan team up in THE CURSED LIBRARY series launching in August!

Dark worlds converge in August 2024 when Archie Comics opens the doors to THE CURSED LIBRARY, an all-new premium-printed limited series that unites Archie's three main horror heroines — and its various one-shot comics — in one explosive storyline by writers Magdalene Visaggio and Eliot Rahal with art by Craig Cermak.

“The CURSED LIBRARY event that Mags and I have been asked to helm is unlike any other moment in Archie Comics history," Eliot Rahal said. "It’s both a throughline and nexus point that weaves together everything in the Archie Horror universe that’s happened so far. Its goal is to provide shape to the world that has been created. THE CURSED LIBRARY is essentially saying: ‘All of this matters. There is a fabric.’"

Archie Horror readers have been treated to a series of standalone one-shot comics in recent years that can be enjoyed as chilling ghost stories and campfire tales, but eagle-eyed fans will have noticed hints of connection, which came to a head in last fall's Madam Satan: Hell on Earth. That story ended with Madam Satan, the escaped Queen of Hell, captured by Jinx Holliday, a teenager interested in magic and rock 'n' roll who is rumored to be Satan's daughter. Jinx is often aided by her loyal best friend Danni, who made global headlines last summer when she was revealed to be Archie's first transgender character. While all three protagonists have charted their own course thus far, their worlds collide in THE CURSED LIBRARY when each will be tested as Danni descends into the depths of Hell to save her friend's soul — and the world.

“This is an ambitious project led by two of the best writers we've had the pleasure of working with on our horror titles, and, honestly, two of the best writers in comics, period," said Archie Comics Senior Director of Editorial Jamie L. Rotante. "I have the ultimate trust in them to craft a story that is layered, poignant, and still metal AF. This feels like the culmination of almost everything I've personally worked on as an editor, and I'm thrilled that I get to watch Eliot and Mags create a world (or rather, convergence of worlds) that I'm, frankly, in awe of. This is not just a love letter to our fans, but to the art of storytelling as a whole, complemented by the stunning artwork of Craig Cermak.”

Cermak has made a big impact on the Archie Horror line, having illustrated Jinx's horror adventures and the initial appearances of The Cursed Library itself, a mysterious collection of books that seem to chronicle the events depicted in recent one-shot comics like Camp Pickens and Betty: The Final Girl. “It's been exciting to go on this journey with Jinx and see it develop into something much grander," Craig Cermak said. "Building on top of all the various horror tales featuring so many great Archie characters is providing such a gratifying opportunity as an artist, with so much great material from which to pull.”

Rahal has written all of Madam Satan's modern adventures, relating the anti-hero's struggle against Satan and her efforts to chart her own destiny. Madam Satan is one of Archie Comics' oldest characters, debuting in Pep Comics #16 in 1941. She was reintroduced as Sabrina's antagonist in the horror series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which was adapted as a Netflix streaming series in 2018. Visaggio is the architect of Jinx's modern resurgence, where she is an older and more macabre version of the classic Archie humor character known as Li'l Jinx, who first appeared in Pep Comics #62 in 1947. Visaggio scripted Danni's return alongside Jinx and her solo star turn in last year's Strange Science one-shot. Danni first appeared in Dilton's Strange Science in 1989 as an equally brilliant friend and foil to Dilton, Riverdale's resident genius. The talents of, and more importantly, the bonds between all three women will be the focus of THE CURSED LIBRARY.

"I think what I love and am most proud of is that this connectivity is secondary to the story," Rahal added. "THE CURSED LIBRARY can stand alone because, at its heart, this is the culmination of two stories: Madam Satan’s and Jinx’s. These two characters have had painful journeys of self-discovery and are finally meeting their climax –– but it’s all wrapped up in the Apocalypse. It’s both the end and a new beginning. And by the time we’ve closed the chapter on the Cursed Library, the Archie Horror line will be diving into a very new and exciting future.”

THE CURSED LIBRARY: ALPHA releases August 21, 2024 in comic shops nationwide, with colors by Matt Herms, lettering by Jack Morelli, and open-to-order variant covers by Robert Hack, Soo Lee, and Reiko Murakami. It will be available for pre-order on May 24, 2024. The first issue will be followed by OMEGA in September and the final chapter, UNBOUND, in October.

#IReadsYou Review: BIG GAME #3

BIG GAME #3 (OF 5)
IMAGE COMICS/Netflix

STORY: Mark Millar
ART: Pepe Larraz
COLORS: Giovanna Niro
LETTERS: Clem Robins
EDITOR: Sarah Unwin
COVER: Pepe Larraz with Giovanna Niro
VARIANT COVER ARTIST: Travis Charest
28pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (September 2023)

Rated M / Mature

Big Game is a new five-issue comic book event miniseries from writer Mark Millar and artist Pepe Larraz.  Big Game is a crossover event series that pulls together all the franchises that are part of Millar's company/imprint, “Millarworld.”  That includes Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Nemesis, and The Magic Order, to name a few.  Colorist Giovanna Niro and letterer Clem Robins complete the series' creative team.

Big Game is a sequel to the first Millarworld comic book miniseries, Wanted (2003-04).  The stars of that series, The Fraternity, the super-villains that secretly rule the world, defeated their superhero adversaries in 1986.  Now, this entity is concerned about the reemergence of superheroes, so it unleashes it new superhero killer, Nemesis (from Nemesis: Reloaded), on a hero assassination spree.

As Big Game #3 opens, Huck (from the miniseries, Huck) is the target of the assassins.  Superior, Night Club, Kingsman, and Kick-Ass: who will survive?  Is Hit-Girl the most dangerous target and/or the smartest?  Time will tell.

THE LOWDOWN:  I have been receiving PDF review copies of Netflix/Millarworld's comic book titles since late 2021.  Big Game #3 is the latest.

As a longtime Millarworld fan, it is both terrifying and thrilling to read Big Game, especially because Nemesis is on the prowl.  That's the good part.  He and others, however, are killing some of my favorite Millarworld good guys and anti-heroes.  Of course, that's the bad part.  Mark Millar ain't playing, and every issue is a prepared explosive device – the opposite of an “improvised explosive device.”  This third issue explodes all the way to the end with surprises, and while I expected this kind of fun, I didn't expect this much fun.

Artist Pepe Larraz continues to unleash his beautiful and brutal graphical storytelling, bringing to life the gleeful vindictiveness of Millar's script.  Larraz just might be making his readers all beg for breaks between issues, even if they'd like to read the next installment as soon as they finish the current issue.

Big Game #1 had me curious to see what was next.  Big Game #2 blew the doorway to my imagination off its hinges.  Now, dear readers, Big Game #3 feels like it ain't finished with me just yet.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Mark Millar and especially of his Millarworld titles will want to read Big Game.

#IReadsYou Review: LORD OF THE JUNGLE VOL. 3 #1

LORD OF THE JUNGLE VOLUME 3 #1
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

STORY: Dan Jurgens
ART: Benito Gallego
COLORS: Francesco Segala
LETTERS: Carlos M. Mangual
EDITOR: Matt Idelson
COVER: Gary Frank
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (November 2022)

Rated Teen+

“The Bleak Zone”

Tarzan is one of the most famous fictional characters in the world.  Tarzan was an orphan and the archetypal “feral child,” and in this instance, he was raised in the African jungle by great apes.  Tarzan was born a noble, John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, but he rejected civilization and lived in the wilds of Africa as a heroic adventurer.  Tarzan was created by Edgar Rice Burroughs and first appeared in the novel, Tarzan of the Apes, which began serialization in All-Story Magazines in 1912, before it was published in book form in 1914.  Tarzan would go onto to be a multimedia star, appearing in films, on television, and in comic books.

The latest Tarzan comic book is Dynamite Entertainment's Lord of the Jungle Volume 3. It is written by Dan Jurgens; drawn by Benito Gallego; colored by Francesco Segala; and lettered by Carlos M. Mangual.  The story involves an event that occurred in the early years of Tarzan's adventures.

Lord of the Jungle Volume 3 #1 opens in the 1950s, onboard a merchant vessel just off the coast of Africa.  One of its passengers is Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle.  Staring out at the storm-tossed ocean, Tarzan's mind returns to the days before his birth, as well as to times later in life – boyhood and early adulthood.  A past wrong must be made right, no matter what manner of beast or obstacle stands in Tarzan's way.  For now, there are thieving men standing in the way of his reunion with an old friend.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Lord of the Jungle Volume 3 #1, which is only the first issue of a solo Dynamite Tarzan comic book that I have read.

Writer Dan Jurgens has had a four-decade career in American comic books of solid work as both a writer-artist and a writer.  As a storyteller, Jurgens understands the processes of telling stories in the medium of comic books, which shows itself here.  Lord of the Jungle Volume 3 #1 reveals the familiar story of Tarzan's past with lots of teasing about the connection of his past with whatever is going to happen in this series' present.  With each page, Jurgens made me more interested in this first chapter.

Artist Benito Gallego also delivers solid work here with an alluring storytelling rhythm that encourages the readers to keep going.  It does not hurt that Gallego's drawing style resembles that of the late Joe Kubert.  Kubert's four-year stint (1972-76) as writer-artist and later as writer-only of DC Comics' Tarzan comic book series is considered by some to be among his best work.  Colorist Francesco Segala captures the varied moods of this story's settings, both in time and locale, and letterer Carlos M. Mangual brings a sense of drama with his stylish, shifting fonts.

Lord of the Jungle Volume 3 has potential.  I rarely read Tarzan comic books, but I think that I will return to this one for the second issue.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Tarzan comic books will want to read Lord of the Jungle Volume 3.
