Dark Horse Debuts New Bettie Page Statue at Toy Fair

NEW BETTIE PAGE STATUE FROM DARK HORSE DELUXE HONORS THE WORK OF DAVE STEVENS

One of the main factors in the resurgence of interest in 1950s glamour icon Bettie Page can easily be traced to Dave Stevens, who made her a character in his The Rocketeer comics, which started in 1982 and remain popular today. Dark Horse has made a special arrangement with the estates of both Bettie Page and Dave Stevens to create a limited-edition statue based on one of Stevens’s best Bettie Page images.

Dark Horse called on Dave’s close friend and sometime collaborator Kent Melton, a top sculptor with whom he had always hoped to do a project of this sort. Dark Horse and Melton went over Stevens’s many Bettie Page images, and the result is the most accurate representation of the pair’s many conversations on the subject.

“We have enormous respect for both Dave and Bettie, and we felt an obligation to make this piece a home run,” David Scroggy, Dark Horse’s vice president of product development, remarked. “Dave was a tough critic, especially when it came to his own work. We knew we had to satisfy him, so we were meticulous in every detail. I think we might have succeeded.”

Kent Melton observed, “Dave and I talked frequently about how female anatomy should work in sculpture. When I started to sculpt, it felt almost as if Dave were there guiding me. The piece came together quickly, almost as if we’d rehearsed it over the years.”

The statue, which will be a numbered, limited edition (quantity still to be determined), stands approximately thirteen inches from base to top, and comes prepainted and presented in deluxe packaging. Also includes an oversized certificate of authenticity reproducing the Dave Stevens illustration that inspired it.

Dark Horse has a long association with both Dave Stevens and Bettie Page, having served as one of the original publishers of The Rocketeer and produced over 150 licensed Bettie Page items.

This beautiful new statue made its premiere appearance at Toy Fair this past weekend and is scheduled for a worldwide release in August 2010, carrying a $150 price tag.

One Piece Love Song

I read One Piece, Vol. 32

I posted a review at the Comic Book Bin.  A new storyline begins.

I Reads You Review: CHAOS CAMPUS SORORITY GIRLS VS ZOMBIES #9

CHAOS CAMPUS: SORORITY GIRLS VS. ZOMBIES #9
APPROBATION COMICS

WRITER/LETTERS: B. Alex Thompson
ARTIST/COLORS/COVER: Cajo Majado
24pp, Color, $4.99

“Nihilism Cubed”

Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies is a comic book series from Approbation Comics and creator B. Alex Thompson. A comic horror series, Chaos Campus follows the adventures of three members of the sorority, Epsilon Alpha Zeta Upsilon (EAZY): Jaime Schaeffer, Paige Patton, and Brittany Miller.

On the night of the volleyball tournament between EAZY and its partner, Alpha Zeta Zeta, zombies invade the EAZY sorority house. The girls escape, only to discover that zombies have taken over The City, and the trio is probably humanity’s only hope to end this zombie apocalypse. Since their escape from the sorority, the girls have been on one crazy adventure after another, fighting dark forces that are strangely similar to horror movie scenarios (The Evil Dead, Hellraiser).

As Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies #9 opens, the girls have escaped the clutches of their old buddy, muscular slasher Kurtis Kasey, and the demon named Winky the One-Eyed Monster. Now, they find themselves transported to a dimension where there are more zombies, and the only way to leave is to hop from one dimension to another – each one resembling the scenario of a classic arcade game. And waiting for them is the ultimate game with the demon Nihilism.

Although he is an independent publisher running what can basically be described as small press, Thompson has been quite resourceful in finding artists who are in sync with his comic book storytelling visions. Finding Cajo Majado is a coup. Majado has mastered composition, design, and storytelling to the extent that he is ready to draw for DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Majado’s style, a kind of melding of Kevin Nowlan and Jason Pearson, is wiry and rubbery enough to strike the right tone for “Nihilism Cubed’s” flights of fancy and shifting settings.

Thompson has produced another winning issue of Chaos Campus: Sorority Girls vs. Zombies and also found another winning artist.

SUPERFROG Gallery Has Yoshitaka Amano Exhibit

Press release from VIZ Media:

SUPERFROG GALLERY AND LeBASSE PROJECTS PRESENT THE BOLD POP ART OF YOSHITAKA AMANO IN DEVA LOKA THE ARTIST’S FIRST NEW LOS ANGELES EXHIBIT

SUPERFROG Gallery at NEW PEOPLE, which provides a unique venue for artists that draw inspiration from Japanese popular culture, teams with Los Angeles-based LeBasse Projects to present a special exhibit of Japanese pop art created by legendary artist Yoshitaka Amano.

Visual art is at the core of Japanese pop culture and the crisp lines, vibrant colors and imaginative designs and characters make the genre instantly recognizable. The new DEVA LOKA exhibit is Amano's first major show in Southern California in nearly a decade and consists of 25 individual pieces rendered with bright auto paint and metallic glitter and offered as an ode to the artist’s love of American comics, culture and automobiles.

DEVA LOKA opens February 20th and runs through March 13th at LeBasse Projects, located in Los Angeles’ Culver City Arts District. A special opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, February 20th from 7:00-10:00pm.

Amano first premiered his DEVA LOKA exhibit in the SUPERFROG Gallery for the grand opening of the NEW PEOPLE venue in San Francisco last August.

The artist says of the exhibit, "Between the late 60's and the 70's, and during my early years in the art world, I was greatly influenced by American comic books and pop culture. I'd like to show my gratitude for the inspiration America gave me with this exhibit. With the theme of DEVA LOKA, all of my concepts and influences are able to come together, centered in one place. I hope everyone enjoys my show."

NEW PEOPLE offers the latest films, art, fashion and retail brands from Japan and is the creative vision of the J-Pop Center Project and VIZ Pictures, a distributor and producer of Japanese live action film.
