I posted a review at the Comic Book Bin (iPhone app available).  Allen Iverson is the back feature in this volume.

New Issue of George Perez Magazine Now Available

from publisher Tony Lorenz:

PACESETTER: THE GEORGE PEREZ MAGAZINE #10

After a year and a half since the last issue, a new issue of PACESETTER is now available. This marks the 10-year anniversary of The George Pérez Newsletter/PACESETTER magazine. 13 issues in total have been published over the last 10 years.

This issue of PACESETTER #10 is an Avengers-themed issue, 72-pages, perfect bound format with glossy full color cover that retails for $9.95. PACESETTER gets major inspiration from the Kirby Collector magazine. Each issue has articles, artwork (many never-before-seen images... and in this issue you get over 20 penciled pages of George’s work on the Avengers), interviews (this issue as the legendary artist Pablo Marcos), theme checklist, trivia, news and much more….

There is one major change to PACESETTER: with this issue it will sadly be no longer available through Diamond's PREVIEW catalog. Like many other Americans that have been affected by the economy, I can no longer afford to go through Diamond at this time. But thanks to the relatively new print-on-demand option, it breathes new life into my magazine. To order copies of PACESETTER #10 you go to the following link below. At Lulu.com, they even offer a free summer shipping option, and accept payment via PayPal and credit cards.

Next issue is the Teen Titans anniversary issue. I’m looking for artwork for the gallery section. For more info on how to contribute, drop me an e-mail at TLorenzp@yahoo.com. Everyone that contributes gets a free copy of the issue that your material appears in, plus credit in the issue, and George receives every issue. I am looking for material for future issuse, because my magazine is only as good as the contributions. Again, drop me an e-mail at TLorenzp@yahoo.com.

We go by the simple motto: FOR PEREZ FANS, BY PEREZ FANS

Megan Kelson at Fantagraphics Bookstore

Megan Kelso’s ARTICHOKE TALES at Fantagraphics Bookstore on June 12

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery hosts an art exhibition and book launch party for Seattle-based cartoonist Megan Kelso’s new graphic novel ARTICHOKE TALES on Saturday, June 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

A graduate of alternative cartoonist breeding ground The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, Megan Kelso burst onto the comics scene in the early 90s with her provocative self-published zine Girlhero. She has since proved herself a master of the cartoon short story with Queen of the Black Black (1998) and The Squirrel Mother (2006), in addition to the weekly serial “Watergate Sue” published in the New York Times Magazine (2007).

ARTICHOKE TALES is a coming of age story about a young girl whose family is caught between the two warring sides of a civil war. Kelso’s visual storytelling, combining delicate line work with rhythmic page compositions, creates a dramatic tension between intimate character studies and the unflinching depiction of the consequences of war, lending cohesion and resonance to a generational epic. The widespread critical acclaim afforded Kelso’s previous work makes Artichoke Tales one of the most eagerly anticipated graphic novels of 2010.

The reception on Saturday, June 12 coincides with the colorful Georgetown Second Saturday Art Attack featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic industrial arts district. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is located at 1201 S. Vale Street at Airport Way S. in the heart of Georgetown. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110. Please join us on June 12 to celebrate the work is this remarkable artist.

Steve Scott at AdventureCon

From Eva Ink:

Steve Scott Heads Off for Adventure!-- AdventureCon that is!

You won't find a more beautiful spot for a convention than Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, so why wouldn't you want to head there this weekend and join the Adventure-- AdventureCon that is! X-Men and Indiana Jones artist Steve Scott sure is!

Known for his work on "Razor" for London Knights, Indiana Jones for Dark Horse, X-Men for Marvel and most recently a Green Lantern special project for DC Comics, one of Steve's favorite venues is AdventureCon.

"I always look forward to coming back to this show that has an awesome legion of fans, and hospitable promoters," says Steve. "In an unbelievable location."

In his illustration career, Steve has had the pleasure of penciling numerous titles including: "New Warriors," "Hourman," and "JLA" just to name a few. In addition, he is the only artist tapped by DC to do any work for the "Batman Dark Knight" movie featuring the now legendary Joker turn by Hearth Ledger. Steve's work and rendition of this actor as the Joker can be found in the exclusive blue-ray package of the hit movie!

Other projects at Marvel Comics, and DC Comics include working with industry legends Louise Simonson and Chris Claremont on the titles "Magik" and "Exiles." As well as titles in the successful Marvel Adventures line including: Fantastic Four, Avengers, and the Hulk. In addition to this ever growing list of published comics, cards, and other related illustrations, Steve also penciled "Kyle XY" for Disney/ABC with writer Jeff Parker.

If you are a fan of the television show, "Smallville," you no doubt have also seen Steve's flash animation work used in that shows production, as well. Steve is currently working on a new flash animation project to be announced soon!

It's no wonder that Steve has the distinction of having his work owned by numerous collectors worldwide, including director George Lucas himself!

Scott will be at the convention all three days of the show available for signing and sketching, as well as offering several exclusive prints! So come on by.

Held at the Pigeon Forge Convention Center at the Grand Resort Hotel, May 28th-30th, this year's AdventureCon promises to offer tons of excitement with a guest list that includes, in addition to Steve Scott: Marv Wolfman, Arthur Suydam, Gary Friedrich, Tom Feister, Billy Dee Williams, Charisma Carpenter, and many more, in addition to celebrity guests, independent film pros and even some awesome celebrity vehicles for you to take your pic with!

Cemetery Dance to Release Special Edition of Justin Cronin's "The Passage"

Highly anticipated horror novel gets special treatment

Justin Cronin's 'The Passage' to be published as deluxe signed edition by Cemetery Dance Publications

Cemetery Dance Publications announced Monday that it will publish a special deluxe, signed, limited edition of 'The Passage' by Justin Cronin, one of the most anticipated horror novels in the last decade.

The Cemetery Dance edition of Cronin's novel will be published this fall in an extremely limited run of just 876 copies signed by the author. The book will also include exclusive special features such as an afterword by the author, over three-dozen personal photos from his research trips with his notes discussing those sight visits, and a hand-drawn map. This deluxe collectible edition will be printed on heavy paper stock and will feature cover artwork from Tomislav Tikulin and black and white interior artwork from Jill Bauman.

"It has the vividness that only epic works of fantasy and imagination can achieve," Stephen King said. "Read this book and the ordinary world disappears."

'The Passage' chronicles a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility that unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. This relentlessly suspenseful adventure is an epic chronicle of human endurance in the face of unprecedented catastrophe and unimaginable danger.

Random House bought the trade rights to the novel for a seven-figure advance after a heated auction between the biggest publishers in the world. Days later Fox 2000 bought the film rights in another seven-figure deal for Ridley Scott¹s production company, Free Productions. Recently the book earned a spot on The Wall Street Journal's list of top books to be released in 2010 and Stephen King, in his Entertainment Weekly column, declared 'The Passage' to be a "don't-miss reading experience."

Gay Comic Book, "Spandex" Recieves Eagle Award Nomination

Gay superhero comic nominated for prestigious award!

Controversial new comic Spandex has been nominated for an Eagle Award – the comics equivalent of the Oscars! The comic – about a group of gay superheroes – is nominated in the category for Best British Colour Comic Book.

Spandex creator Martin Eden commented on the nomination: “I’m completely shocked and I really didn’t expect it! I’m so proud of my comic and I’m really trying to do things that have never been done in a comic before. I’m up against some big titles in my category, so it’d be so exciting if the independent guy won! I have some amazing plans for the next few issues of Spandex, and I can’t wait to unleash it all on the comic-reading world.”

Issue Two of the comic features a guest appearance by Her Majesty herself, the Queen – as a Buckingham Palace burglary sparks off Spandex’s latest adventure! The Brighton-based gay-team then head to Japan to recover the crown jewels and replace a fallen team-mate. There, they face the formidable swords of the Pink Ninjas, the terrifying Gayzilla, and they recruit Neon, the world’s first gay, fluorescent ninja!

Spandex is now being published as an ongoing comic title, with eventual book collections in the pipeline. “The original plan was to publish issue one, and then work on a bigger book,” says Martin, “but after global media attention, it was just too exciting to wait!” Spandex hit the headlines back in November – not just in the UK, but in Australia, Russia, America, Germany – all over the world – too.

Spandex comic #2 is on sale now and is available from the Spandex website, selected comic shops and via online download. Each reader will receive a special Pink Ninja badge (while stocks last!).

Tying in with this issue is ‘Japandex’, an online gallery of Japan - related artwork all with a Spandex twist – provided by the UK’s best independent comic artists.
