Review: Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (OGN)
HUNTER S. THOMPSON'S FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS
TOP SHELF PRODUCTIONS – @topshelfcomix
CARTOONIST: Troy Little – @meanwhilestudio
STORY: Hunters S. Thompson (his novel)
EDITORS: Ted Adams and Denton J. Tipton
ISBN: 978-1-60309-375-0; hardcover (October 2015)
176pp, Color, $24.99 U.S.
Mature readers (16+)
Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream first saw life as a two-art series for Rolling Stone magazine in 1971. It was published as a book (with illustrations by Ralph Steadman) in 1972 and has gone onto be considered one of the most important American novels ever published.
Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a full-color graphic novel adaptation of Thompson's novel. The graphic novel is the creation of Eisner-nominated comic book creator and writer-artist, Troy Little (Chiaroscuro). The original novel is influential; its adaptation by Troy Little is a masterwork.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream follows its protagonist, Raoul Duke (Hunter S. Thompson's alter ego), and Duke's attorney, Dr. Gonzo, as they travel to Las Vegas. This story is based on two actual trips to Las Vegas that Thompson took with his attorney, the Chicano activist, Oscar Zeta Acosta, who becomes Dr. Gonzo in the story.
In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Duke and Gonzo are initially in Las Vegas to cover “The Mint 400,” an off-road race for motorcycles and dune buggies that apparently offers the richest prize or purse for the winners. The second Las Vegas assignment is a request by Rolling Stone for Duke to write a 50 thousand word piece about a four-day seminar by the National Conference of District Attorneys.
Along the way, Duke and Gonzo descend into a haze from their drug and alcohol-fueled bender. Duke searches for the American dream and ruminates on the failure of the 1960s counter-culture movement. After crashing a drug-enforcement conference, racking-up large room-service bills, and wrecking two hotel rooms, however, both men will discover that it is difficult to leave Las Vegas.
As a former journalism student, I have heard of Hunter S. Thompson, of course. He was the gold-standard and a legend to fellow students, but to me, he was just another famous White journalist upon whose altar I was supposed to worship. I have never read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, although I have had vague plans to do so for over two decades. I had seen him on television several times before he died, and I have read at least one piece written by him. Perhaps, I have read more, but I don't remember any of it.
I know Thompson best by the most famous parody of him, “Uncle Duke,” the character in Doonesbury, Gary Trudeau's long-running satirical daily newspaper comic strip. I am familiar with the movie adaptations of Thompson's work, but have not seen those films. So, when Top Shelf Productions sent me a copy of their graphic novel adaptation, Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I did not know what I was going to do. I considered ignoring it and not reading it, but Top Shelf has always been cool with recognizing me as someone they want to review their books.
Of course, I should have had more faith in them. This book is an absolute blast to read. It is one of the best comic books of 2015, and I consider it a tremendous achievement on writer-artist Troy Little's part. Readers who admire comic books as more than just escapist entertainment, and thus, are always on the lookout for standout material, should read Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
The graphical storytelling, in particularly the art and illustrations of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas the comic book, focuses on Duke and Gonzo's supernatural consumption of drugs, alcohol, and an amazing array of mind-altering substances. Little's cartoon recreation of Duke and Gonzo's mother-of-all-Vegas-benders is the most beautiful depiction of debauched substance abuse that I have seen since I first watched director Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream (2000).
The vivid and spectacular colors bring the hallucinations and the claustrophobic cafes, conference rooms, and hotel rooms to life. Little's drawing style for this graphic novel is similar to the kind of drawing styles used by political cartoonists, which works quite well when the story engages the characters. The political styling connects Raoul Duke's political and social examinations to the main body of the narrative, which is about Duke and Dr. Gonzo's madness.
I think that if the book has a fault, it is that the political and social ruminations are relegated to exposition in caption boxes. The art mainly focuses on the insanity of and the savage humor in Duke and Gonzo's interactions with drugs and with other people. Because I loved the glorious madness of Duke and Gonzo's demented Vegas adventures, I really don't want to find fault with anything, so if you want to believe that this graphic novel is not perfect, there you go... I was genuinely sad when I got to the last page of Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I guess I'll have to start reading it again.

Review: Star Wars LANDO #5
LANDO No. 5
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
WRITER: Charles Soule
ART: Alex Maleev

LETTERS: VC's Joe Caramagna
COVER: Alex Maleev
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (December 2015)
Rated T
“Part V”
Lando Calrissian, the first Star Wars character portrayed onscreen by a Black man (Oscar-nominated actor, Billy Dee Williams), got his first solo comic book series in the year 2015... yeah. After a cumulative three decades of Star Wars comic books, no Lando, no Black man. The title, launched early this past summer, was Lando, written by Charles Soule, drawn by Alex Maleev, colored by Paul Mounts, and lettered by Joe Caramagna. You can't have everything, as they say; no African-American comics creators participated in Lando's creation. Sigh.
Lando begins with gambler, hustler, ladies' man, businessman, etc., Lando Calrissian, trying to pay off a huge past debt. Lando and his longtime cohort, Lobot, led a team of alien clone warriors, Aleksin and Pavol, and antiquity specialist, Sava Korin Pers, in the heist of “The Imperialis,” an Imperial Luxury yacht. What they did not know is that the yacht is the personal property of Emperor Palpatine, and it contains a treasure horde of Jedi and Sith artifacts. Meanwhile, the Emperor sends bounty hunter, Chanath Cha, to deal with the situation. She has past with Lando and Lobot...
As Lando #5 (“Part V”) opens, Lando is trying to make a deal with Chanath, while she prepares to blow up the Imperialis. He is desperate to help the grievously injured Lobot and also still salvage something from this heist. Deals will be made, but the people who turn out to be loyal and those who turn out to be backstabbers will surprise Lando.
After reading Lando #1, I was pleased with the art by Alex Maleev. I found that, in terms of design and graphic style, the comic book looked like The Empire Strikes Back. For me, Alex Maleev's art on Lando recalled the work of legendary comic book artist, Al Williamson, who drew Marvel Comics' six-issue adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back (published in issues #39 to 44 of Marvel's original Star Wars comic book series). Even colorist Paul Mounts seemed to have The Empire Strikes Back's color palette in mind as he colored Maleev's original art for Lando #1. Nothing has changed. To the end, Lando is still a great looking comic book.
As for Charles Soule's story and script for the first issue, I thought there was potential for an excellent Star Wars comic book. Indeed, it has worked out that way. In fact, the heist has many exciting twists and turns that had me eagerly awaiting each issue. I always read Lando first on new comics day.
I think Soule also presented an exceptional character study of Lando, creating the complex and fascinating guy we've always known to be there behind what we were given in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (1983). Relatively speaking, there wasn't much depicted onscreen about his personality (beyond his guile and beguiling ways), nor was there much about his hopes, dreams, and inner demons. Soule gave that to us with Lando. I hope we get more. No fan of Star Wars comic books should miss Lando.

Captain America created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
“You Can't Take it With You”
Captain America is a Marvel comics superhero. He was created by cartoonists Joe Simon and Jack Kirby and first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated: March 1941), which was published by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. Captain America had a sidekick named James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes. The original Bucky was created by Simon and Kirby and also first appeared in Captain America Comics #1.
Captain America: White is a five-issue miniseries written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Tim Sale. The series follows the World War II-era adventures of Captain America and Bucky. Captain America: White is part of Loeb and Sale's “Marvel Color” series, a group of comic book miniseries which present an intimate portrait of some of Marvel Comics' greatest characters during their early years. Previous installments in this series include, Spider-Man: Blue, Daredevil: Yellow, and Hulk: Gray.
Captain America: White #1 (“You Can't Take it With You”) opens during Captain America's first meeting with the Avengers, after he was “defrosted,” which was originally depicted in The Avengers #4 (cover dated: March 1964). A conversation with Nick Fury, with whom Cap fought during WWII, turns his mind back to the war and to his partner, Bucky, believed to be dead. The Captain remembers how, as Steve Rogers, he trained James Buchanan Barnes, which led to him being Captain America's partner, “Bucky.” Captain America remembers that, as his bond with Bucky strengthened, he began to worry about the danger their missions posed for his dear, younger partner.
I did not know about Captain America: White until I saw a listing for it in the Diamond Distributors' new release list the week the first issue shipped. I was even more surprised to discover that Captain America: White #1 reprinted the contents of Captain America: White #0, which I obviously also did not know existed.
Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale are fan favorite creators individually and as a team. However, they are not favorites of your humble reviewer, dear readers. Loeb has written a few comic books that I have enjoyed: The Witching Hour (a prestige-format miniseries from DC Comics), Batman/The Spirit #1, and about half of Batman: Hush, to name a few others. Other than those, I cannot see why Loeb is considered such a exceptional comic book writer. There are some Tim Sale works that I have liked.
Captain America: White #1 and #0 (which is re-presented/reprinted in #1) are professional productions. They are not bad, but they are not particularly good, although the creative team and staff's efforts to produce something exceptional is obvious. What else could we expect of a comic book project that began development over seven years ago? I can give credit for effort.
But... the story simply does not interest me that much, at this point. I am curious about it, simply because Rogers' relationship and deep feelings and concern for Bucky seem weird and filled with sexual repression. Tim Sale's composition, design, and graphic style here seems like a weird and desperate mimicry of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson's art for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. I do like Dave Stewart's gorgeous coloring.
Hmmm. Will I read more Captain America: White? I don't know. I am curious. Maybe, it will grow on me, and I'll have another thing to add to my short list of Loeb and Sale projects that I like.

From Under Mountains is an ongoing fantasy comic book series published by Image Comics. The series is from the creative team of Claire Gibson (story and script), Sloane Leong (art and colors), and Marian Churchland (story and cover art). From Under Mountains is set in the world of Akhar and will focus on the partnership of a lord's daughter, a disgraced knight, and a runaway thief – a union that will change the course of a world in turmoil.
From Under Mountains #1 opens with a magical summoning. Then, the story sets about introducing the main characters. In Karsgate (a northern land in Akhar), Elena, the daughter of the Lord of Karsgate, wishes to have the freedom to roam the world that her brother, Marcellus, has. Her father has other plans for her, plans he believes will secure his family's future.
Elsewhere in Karsgate, Tova, a young thief, plans to steal her way into Karsgate Keep. However, it is at the keep that she witnesses something supernatural and horrifying. Meanwhile, in Akara, the center of power and the seat of the king, down-and-out knight, Sir Tomas Fisher, is brought before a powerful councilor, Vassedin, who has a proposition for him.
From Under Mountains looks like a fantasy epic and will apparently take place in a land of embattled rival clans and will feature courtly intrigue, magic, heroes, villains, and goblins. After reading it, I recognize elements that are familiar to high fantasy. From Under Mountains seems like a version of A Game of Thrones touched by Lord of the Rings.
Visually and graphically, however, From Under Mountains looks different. The characters are not lily white, as if this were a film filled with the finest that Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, and Nordic bloodlines have to offer. Instead, the characters are brown, red, and rusty, among other shades. The land and settings seem Oriental (the old version of the word), Persian, and “middle Eastern.”
The art by Sloane Leong looks like a melding of the work of Carla Speed-McNeil in Finder and Jeff Smith in Bone. The graphic design, however, suggests tapestry and pottery. The coloring is earthy, except when depicting magic; then, it is wild and trippy. I have to admit that I find Leong's art beautiful and alluring.
From Under Mountains fascinates me. I cannot stop flipping through its pages. I can't wait for the second issue.

Review: Batman #44
BATMAN No. 44
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review originally appeared on Patreon.]
STORY: Scott Snyder
WRITERS: Scott Snyder and Brian Azzarello
ART: Jock
COLORS: Lee Loughridge
LETTERS: Deron Bennett
COVER: Jock
VARIANT COVERS: Tony Daniel with Tomeau Morey (Green Lantern 75th Anniversary Cover)
40pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (November 2015)
Rated “T” for “Teen”
Batman created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger
“A Simple Case”
Once upon a time, American network television sitcoms occasionally offered up episodes that focused on timely and/or relevant events, issues, and topics (sex, teen pregnancy, gun violence, abortion, etc.). Such series installments came to be known as the “very special episode.”
There are a certain episodes that come to mind when I think of the “very special episode.” In “Diff'erent Strokes” (which personified the special episode), a bicycle shop owner grooms Gary Coleman's “Arnold Jackson” and Arnold's friend “Dudley Jackson” (Shavar Ross) for sexual assault. In “Family Ties,” Michael J. Fox's “Alex P. Keaton” loses his virginity to a woman who promptly dumps him, even though Alex had fallen in love with her after the encounter. In “Good Times,” Jimmie Walker's “JJ” was engaged to a young woman who uses hallucinogenic drugs (angel dust?) that leads to to her jumping through a bathroom widow to her death.
Writers Scott Snyder and Brian Azzarello and artist Jock, with the assistance of colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Deron Bennett offer up what could be considered a “very special issue” of Batman. The story revolves around the police shooting of an unarmed young black man.
Batman #44 (“A Simple Case”) opens in the Gotham Marshes, near the old city limit. Fifteen-year-old Peter Duggio, a resident of the Narrows, is found dead. It looks as if he were dropped straight from the sky. At first, Batman suspects a supervillain, one of his “rogues gallery.” Then, it seems that Peter, an unarmed young black man, was shot by veteran Gotham City Police Department officer, Ned Howler. However, Peter's death is far more complicated, with the teen boy's demise being the center of a web of deceit and lies. And Bruce Wayne may be in that web.
I first heard about Batman #44 when it became a buzzed-about comic book story for a few days. It generated only a little fake controversy. The truth is that “A Simple Case” is not so much about a White cop shooting an unarmed Black kid, as it is about the entire, rotten, corrupted thing that a big city can become. Peter Duggio's death is the result of criminals, corrupted public officials, law enforcement, and system-wide failure, especially on the part of institutions.
Snyder and Azzarello seem to be say that individuals can make a difference because each person can offer his of her singular focus. On the other hand, institutions, agencies, organizations, etc. are made of multiple individuals and often cannot provide a singular focus where it is needed – in this case of needing singular focus, Peter Duggio.
The art by Jock is half graphical storytelling and half illustration. Snyder and Azzarello's story seems separate from Jock's art, but that does not take away from the story. Sometimes, Jock's art comes across as illustrations for an essay or piece of journalistic writing. Jock's art becomes comic book storytelling in those moments when Snyder and Azzarello focus on character drama and character interaction. Lee Loughridge's colors are moody, but also accentuate Batman's quest, giving it a sense of immediacy. The colors suggest that this story is a dark and moody thriller, but at times, Loughridge understands that the story needs a sense of hope.
Batman #44 is a nice change of pace for the series. Best of all, it is nice that the creative team offered more than something that is simply of the moment. Peter Duggio's story is timeless because it depicts problems that just won't go away.

Review: KANAN: The Last Padawan #6
KANAN: THE LAST PADAWAN No. 6

WRITER: Greg Weisman
ART: Jacopo Camagni
COLORS: David Curiel
LETTERS: VC's Joe Caramagna
COVER: Pepe Larraz with David Curiel
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (November 2015)

Book 1, Epilogue: The Last Padawan
“Star Wars Rebels” is a 3D CGI animated television series that appears on the Disney XD cable network. Produced by Lucasfilm and Lucasfilm Animation, “Rebel” is set 14 years after the film, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), and five years before the events depicted in the original film, Star Wars (1977).
“Star Wars Rebels” takes place during an era when the Galactic Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and features several new characters. One of them is the former Jedi, Kanan Jarrus, who has spent years hiding his Force powers and lightsaber. He is the star of the comic book series, Kanan: The Last Padawan. The series is written by Greg Weisman (a former executive producer of “Star Wars Rebels”) drawn by Pepe Larraz, colored by David Curiel, and lettered by Joe Caramagna, with covers by Mark Brooks.
Kanan: The Last Padawan #6 leaves the past and opens sometime in the period in which “Star Wars Rebels” takes place. Kanan Jarrus, the former Jedi Padawan, Caleb Dume, is now part of the motley crew of the freighter starship, “The Ghost.” This six-person rebel cell is one of many small clusters of rebels fighting the Galactic Empire. In addition to Kanan, there is the teenaged Ezra Bridger; the Twi'lek, Hera Syndulla; Mandalorian teen artist, Sabine Wren; Lasat honor guard, Zeb Orrelios; and astromech droid, C1-10P (aka “Chopper”).
As the story opens, Kanan returns to the planet, Kaller, where his life as a Jedi-in-training effectively ended. The crew of the Ghost is on the planet to pick up supplies to help refugees. However, upon arrival, Kanan and his rebel companions find the supply crates empty. As they begin a search for these supplies, which they simply must have, Kanan fears that the ghosts of his past are beginning to catch up with his present.
Kanan: The Last Padawan #6 offers a change from the previous issues of the series, which all occurred in a time years before the events depicted in “Rebels.” Also, Jacopo Camagni draws this issue, while series artist, Pepe Larraz, draws only this issue's cover. Stylistically, it is not a big change, as the art in Kanan tends to stay close to the design and art direction of “Rebels.”
That is what Kanan: The Last Padawan tries to be – true to the animated series upon which it is based, and it succeeds at that. Among Marvel's Star Wars comic book series, Kanan is almost the odd man out, as it is distinct, in a number of ways, from the other series. However, that makes it a good tie-in comic book, giving readers two extra “Star Wars Rebels” stories per year.
I am curious to see where this series goes. “Star Wars Rebels” has so much potential for delving into the years before the setting of the original Star Wars film trilogy, as well as offering some surprises. Kanan: The Last Padawan reflects that, so I am in for the long haul. It is not a great comic book, but it is a very good one.
