Review: FUTURE QUEST #2
FUTURE QUEST No. 2
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Jeff Parker – @JeffParker
ARTISTS: Evan “Doc” Shaner – @DocShaner (p. 1-13); Ron Randall (p. 20-27); Jonathan Case (p. 19-22)
COLORS: Jordie Bellaire – @whoajordie
LETTERS: ALW Studios' Dave Lanphear
COVER: Evan “Doc” Shaner
VARIANT COVERS: Jill Thompson
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (September 2016)
Rated “T” for “Teen”
Part Two: “Visitors from Beyond”
Future Quest is one of four comic books produced by DC Comics that re-imagine and re-interpret classic television series and characters created by American animation studio, Hanna-Barbera. Future Quest brings the stars of Hanna-Barbera's action, sci-fi, and superhero TV series together. That includes “Jonny Quest,” “Space Ghost,” “The Herculoids,” “Birdman,” “Frankenstein Jr.,” “The Galaxy Trio,” “The Impossibles,” and “Mightor.”
Future Quest is written by Jeff Parker; primarily drawn by Evan “Doc” Shaner; colored by Jordie Bellaire; and lettered by Dave Lanphear. So far, the main focus of Future Quest is the cast of “Jonny Quest” (referred to as “Team Quest”): Jonny Quest; his adopted brother, Hadji; his father, Dr. Benton Quest; family bodyguard, Race Bannon; and, of course, Jonny's dog, Bandit.
Future Quest #2 (“Visitors from Beyond”) opens with the cast of “The Herculoids” and “Space Ghost” fighting the Omnikron, some kind of reality-devouring entity. Back on Earth, “Team Quest” and their new friend, Ty, find an “alien” visitor. Now, they have to protect the visitor and themselves from the forces of longtime Quest nemesis, Dr. Zin.
I was initially cynical about DC's Hanna-Barbera comics, and I still am about the other three. However, I am in total love with Future Quest. Jeff Parker is doing some of the best storytelling ever done for Hanna-Barbera's sci-fi and superhero characters. Hell, it might be the best. When people talk about wanting more comic books that are fun to read, Parker's ears must burn because they are talking about his comics, especially Future Quest.
Parker's partner-in-crime (against mediocre comic books) is Evan “Doc” Shaner. His drawing style is clean, recalling animation art and the cool and slick flair of John Romita, Sr. Shaner's Future Quest compositions are wide open, and that perfectly captures the youthful enthusiasm and sense of adventure that permeates classic “Johnny Quest.” It is telling that Ron Randall and Jonathan Case, the artists who draw the second half of Future Quest #2 and who are fine artists themselves, take their graphical cues from Shaner. “Doc” is the boss.
In my review of Future Quest #1, I wondered if future issues of Future Quest could be as good – long term – as I thought the first issue was. Future Quest #2 is as good. I can't imagine this series falling apart form here, but then, the Cleveland Cavaliers are the 2015-16 NBA Champions and not the Golden State Warriors.

Book Review: Sara and V.I. Burn it Up in "FALLOUT"
FALLOUT
HARPCOLLINS/William Morrow – @HarperCollins; @WmMorrowBks
AUTHOR: Sara Paretsky – @SaraParesky
ISBN: 978-0-06-243584-2; hardcover (April 18, 2017)
448pp, B&W, $27.99 U.S., $34.99 CAN
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
Fallout is the new novel from bestselling author Sara Paretsky. It is also the most recent novel in her long-running “V.I. Warshawski” series of novels featuring Chicago-based private investigator, Victoria Iphigenia “V.I.” Warshawski. The series began in 1982 with the novel, Indemnity Only. In Fallout, V.I., also known as “Vic,” travels to Kansas on the trail of a vanished film student and a faded Hollywood star and finds herself also investigating a decades-old conspiracy.
As Fallout begins, V.I. is approached by a young friend, Bernadine Fouchard, and Bernadine's cousin, Angela Creedy, to find a missing relative, a young Black man named August Veriden. August is a film student and budding filmmaker, and although no one knows where he is, the police want to talk to him because he is a person of interest (lead suspect) in a break-in at his job. It does not take long for V.I. to learn that others are looking for August and are willing to tear apart a workplace or home to find him.
V.I. discovers that August left Chicago in the company of Emerald Ferring, an actress best known for starring in a few African-American cult films in the 1960s. V.I. follows the duo to Kansas, but by the time she gets to Lawrence, Kansas (home of the University of Kansas Jayhawks), she learns that the military is also interested in Veriden and Ferring whereabouts. Their arrival in Kansas and subsequent disappearance seems tied to events in 1983, a year when anti-nuclear protests brought Ferring back to her Kansas home. Something bad happened back then and it is starting to happen again. This missing persons case may be V.I. toughest case, and as the bodies pile up, she discovers that even she isn't safe.
I read a few V.I. Warshawski novels back in the 1990s, maybe even in the late 1980s. I don't know what got me started. Was it the movie, V.I. Warshawski, starring husky-voiced Kathleen Turner in the title role? Was it because I heard, while listening to a radio show (National Public Radio?), that a then-new V.I. novel was one of then President Bill Clinton's favorite books?
Well, I liked the two (or three) that I read, but school and work slowed my novel reading to, at best, one or two novels per year. I never forgot V.I. and always wanted to return to the series. When William Morrow's marketing offered a review copy of Fallout to bloggers, I jumped at it. I am not at all disappointed; V.I. is as lovely a character as I remembered.
Fallout starts out as a standard P.I. (private investigator) novel, more or less. The goal for the investigator, in this case, V.I., is to find someone and eventually another someone. By the time, V.I. has made it from one end of Kansas to the other, Fallout starts to feel like a conspiracy thriller, and as the readers go deeper into the narrative, they can be forgiven for thinking that Fallout might be a little bit military thriller.
Ultimately, Fallout represents the best of a V.I. Warshawski novel – the mystery/suspense/crime novel that is more than a little bit different. Sara Paretsky offers an irresistible narrative flow that makes it hard to stop reading. Paretsky and her character, V.I Warshawski, are legends because they both deliver ferocious crime novels like Fallout.

Review: ALL-STAR BATMAN #6
ALL STAR BATMAN No. 6
DC COMICS – @DCComics
STORY: Scott Snyder
ART: Jock; Francesco Francavilla
COLORS: Matt Hollingsworth; Francesco Francavilla
LETTERS: Steve Wands
COVER: Jock
VARIANT COVER: Jock; Francesco Francavilla
40pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (March 2017)
Rated “T” for Teen
Batman created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger
“Ends of the Earth” Part 1 and “The Cursed Wheel” Part 5
When I first saw the straight-to-video animated film, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero, I realized what a great character long-time Batman nemesis, Mr. Freeze, could be. To put it simply, the late actor Michael Ansara killed it delivering a great voice performance as Freeze in SubZero. I think Boyd Kirkland and Randy Rogel created pathos for Freeze in SubZero that the character has rarely (if ever) had. Since seeing that film, I have chosen to hear Michael Ansara's voice whenever I read comic books in which Mr. Freeze appears.
So I was happy to learn that Mr. Freeze is the bad guy in the second story arc of the new star-creator-driven Batman comic book series, All-Star Batman. This new story features series writer Scott Snyder, and is drawn by Jock; colored by Matt Hollingsworth; and lettered Steve Wands.
All-Star Batman #6 opens with Batman trudging through snow in Alaska, 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle. There is where he will find Mr. Freeze, hold up with a small army of living dead and about to hatch a plan to unfreeze Armageddon on humanity.
There is a sense of desperation in this new story, “Ends of the Earth.” Personally, professionally, and socially – in the grand scheme of things, personal drive and desire drive conflict for the players in this new Batman thriller. Each side believes that his choices are, if not the ultimate good, then, the best outcome for everyone.
This is the apocalypse writ intimately on old grudges and broken promises, and Jock's art is perfect for this stylish, world-ending, character study. After the shiny, thrilling opening arc, Scott Snyder brings everything down to a simmer that still manages to threaten the world. Meanwhile, “The Cursed Wheel” continues with a new artist, Francesco Francavilla, who delivers a creepy opening chapter.
