Review: DOOM PATROL #1
DOOM PATROL No. 1 (2016)
DC COMICS/Young Animal – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Gerard Way
ART: Nick Derington
COLORS: Tamra Bonvillain
LETTERS: Todd Klein
COVER: Nick Derington
VARIANT COVERS: Brian Bolland; Sanford Greene; Jaime Hernandez; Babs Tarr; Brian Chippendale
40pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (NOVEMBER 2016)
Mature Readers
Doom Patrol created by Arnold Drake
“Happy Birthday, Casey Brinke” Part One: “Brick by Brick”
The Doom Patrol is a DC Comics superhero team. The original version of the Doom Patrol first appeared in the comic book, My Greatest Adventure #80 (cover dated: June 1963). DC Comics apparently officially credits writer Arnold Drake as the creator of the Doom Patrol, but writer Bob Haney, artist Bruno Premiani, and editor Murray Boltinoff also contributed to the creation of the original concept and team.
The first Doom Patrol consisted of super-powered misfits who had abilities (or “gifts”) that caused them alienation and trauma. However, there have been many incarnations of the Doom Patrol since the first group that more or less work along the same lines or share the spirit of the original The most famous iteration of the Doom Patrol since the original would probably be the one created and written by Grant Morrison that first appeared in Doom Patrol (Vol. 2) #19 (cover dated: February 1989).
There is a new version of the Doom Patrol. It is part of the new DC Comics imprint, “Young Animal,” which is “curated” and overseen by Gerard Way. Way is the creator of the comic book series, The Umbrella Academy (Dark Horse Comics), and is also a lead vocalist and co-founder of the rock band, My Chemical Romance. The new Doom Patrol is written by Way, drawn by Nick Derington, colored by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettered by Todd Klein.
Doom Patrol #1 (“Brick by Brick”) introduces Casey Brinke. Maybe, she's a “space case,” but, for sure, she is a hot-shot ambulance driver. However, goings-on in other dimensions will make her weird even weirder, including meeting a new roommate.
This first issue of Young Animal's Doom Patrol is certainly intriguing, but there is nothing here that will make me, dear reader, convince you to buy the first issue. This is not a bad story, but Gerard Way spends so much time teasing that he only has enough space to do one other thing, make Casey Brinke likable. That is something. I am a longtime fan of the Doom Patrol, so I was going to try this comic book for at least a few issues. Casey Brinke makes me think a few issues are a decent investment.
I do really like the art by Nick Derington. His simple, clean style recalls small press and indie comics released by publishers like Drawn & Quarterly, Oni Press, SLP, etc. The popularity of artists like Bruce Timm and the late Darwyn Cooke, whose slick styles recall comic books from an earlier era, made it possible for the rise of artists like Babs Tarr and Chris Samnee in superhero comic books. In fact, Derington reminds me of Chris Samnee.
The fact that this is Doom Patrol and that I like the style and design of Nick Derington's graphical storytelling and art means I will be back for more. Perhaps, I can highly recommend the Young Animal Doom Patrol to you at a later date.
[This comic book contains a “special sneak preview” of Shade the Change Girl #1 by Cecil Castellucci, Marley Zarcone, Kelly Fitzpatrick, and Saida Temofonte.]

Yaoi Manga Review: TEN COUNT Volume 4
TEN COUNT, VOL. 4
SUBLIME MANGA (Shinshokan) – @SuBLimeManga
MANGAKA: Rihito Takarai
TRANSLATION: Adrienne Beck
LETTERS: NRP Studios
ISBN: 978-1-4215-8906-0; paperback (May 2017); Rated “M” for “Mature”
188pp, B&W, $12.99 U.S., $17.99 CAN, £8.99 UK
Ten Count is a yaoi manga from manga creator, Rihito Takarai. Yaoi manga is a subset of boys' love (or BL) manga, which depicts amorous situations between male romantic leads. Yaoi manga usually features explicit depictions of sex between those male leads. Ten Count focuses on the developing relationship between two men, Tadaomi Shirotani, a corporate secretary who is a “germaphobe,” and Riku Kurose, the counselor and clinical psychotherapist who tries to help him.
The truth is that Shirotani cannot resist Kurose's advances. As Ten Count, Vol. 4 (Chapters 19 to 24) opens, Shirotani is at the mercy of Kurose and a shapely butt-plug Kurose wields. Although he shivers with pleasure, Shirotani declares that Kurose is disgusting and runs away. His words to Kurose, however, will cost Shirotani and will force him to be real about his feelings concerning Kurose.
[This volume includes the Ten Count bonus stories, “Kurose, Shirotani, and Thumb Wrestling,” “Kurose, Shirotani, and Silky Sensations,” and “Kurose, a White Cat and a Can of Tuna.”]
In my review of the first volume of the Ten Count manga, I wrote that it was okay that there was no sex in the first six chapters of Ten Count. Sometimes, even yaoi manga is good at quietly building romance over a slow simmer of a narrative, but by the sexual... I mean... second volume of this series, it was on like rough-sex Donkey Kong.
Ten Count Volume 4 is one of the most intensely sexual comic books that I have ever read, just as was the case with Vol. 2. [I did not read Vol. 3.] Creator Rihito Takarai surprised me by how she made masturbation seem as sweet as a first kiss in Vol. 2. In Vol. 4, she spreads Shirotani's butt cheeks and reveals the anus and puts the Oh! in Ohio. Her romantic lead cannot get enough of the pleasure that he derives from objects and digits being inserted into his bunghole (with a nod to President Lyndon B. Johnson).
Still, the pure, heartfelt romance remains. From the beginning, I thought that Ten Count was an odd yaoi manga considering the profession of one lead and the condition of the other. However, disorders and jobs aside, Ten Count is a love story, and I want a happy ending.

Review: HIP HOP FAMILY TREE #1
HIP HOP FAMILY TREE No. 1
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS – @fantagraphics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
CARTOONIST: Ed Piskor
EDITOR: Eric Reynolds
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (August 2015)
“Birth of a New Culture!!”
Cartoonist Ed Piskor combined his two great loves, comic books and Hip Hop, and began chronicling the history of Hip Hop culture and rap music. This was done in the form of a webcomic, Hip Hop Family Tree, which he as been serializing in weekly installments at the website, Boing Boing (boingboing.net) since January 2012. This is the history of Hip Hop as told through comics – the who, what, when, and where of a culture and music that, from the beginning, refused to be marginalized and relegated to the ash bin of history by its haters.
Fantagraphics Books first collected Hip Hop Family Tree in print in a graphic novel format with Hip Hop Family Tree Vol. 1: 1970s-1981 (December 2013), the first of three volumes, with a fourth nearly published (to date). In the summer of 2015, Fantagraphics began reprinting the contents of the graphic novels as a monthly comic book series (the first monthly comic book in the company's four-decade history).
Hip Hop Family Tree #1 (“Birth of a New Culture!!”) reprints contents published in Hip Hop Family Tree Vol. 1: 1970s-1981. Welcome to the very beginnings of Hip-Hop. See the DJs, starting with DJ Kool Herc, who gave birth to a new music and culture in the tenement recreational rooms of the south Bronx in the 1970s.
A Bronx-based party DJ, Herc discovers that during his show, the audience really likes the instrumental “breaks” in the records. An experimenter, Herc uses loops and mixing to extend the breaks and soon a talented core of other DJs begin to build upon the foundation that Herc develops. Soon, emcees (or MCs) are “rapping” over the breaks and a new culture is born. Also, pioneers Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa appear and see the man who invented the term, “hip-hop.”
I first heard about Hip Hop Family Tree in a press release I received from Fantagraphics Books. I immediately knew that I wold be interested in reading it. Hip Hop Family Tree is an excellent example of the comics medium as journalism, biography, and history Hip Hop Family Tree as a comic book is a marriage made in heaven because both comics culture and Hip Hop culture are born of outside art forms.
Creator Ed Piskor’s vintage graphic design style, compositions, and graphical storytelling (complete with Zip-A-Tone and brown paper texture), gives Hip Hop Family Tree that distinctive 1970s comic book look. His work has a dated feel, which is not a bad thing. This striking visual and graphic aesthetic makes Hip Hop Family Tree look like a vintage, low-wattage documentary from the 1970s, while giving it the timeless sparkle and sense of fun that comic books (even old comics) have.
Hip Hop Family Tree #1 often reads like a college freshmen history essay written the night before its due. It is all over the place and jumps from one historical figure and/or place to the next, but this is right process for the subject. The history of Hip Hop is fast and furious; who did what and when is not always clear and agreed upon. This is a story, and the story of Hip Hop is like a comic book story – brash and bold and against all the other proper and serious storytelling mediums (like novels, stage drama, poetry, etc.). Do your thing and break the rules. The fathers and mothers of Hip Hop did it their way and so does Hip Hop Family Tree.
Hip Hop Family Tree the monthly comic book offers new covers and splash pages drawn especially for the series. Ed Piskor also presents a “director's commentary” that sights sources for the history of Hip Hop and also gives details on his motivations and processes and also on the research involved in creating each page.
