Review: AMERICAN GODS #4

AMERICAN GODS No. 4
DARK HORSE COMICS – @DarkHorseComics

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

STORY: Neil Gaiman
SCRIPT: P. Craig Russell
LAYOUTS: P. Craig Russell
ART: Scott Hampton; Colleen Doran
COLORS: Scott Hampton
LETTERS: Rick Parker
COVER: Glenn Fabry with Adam Brown
VARIANT COVER: David Mack
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (June 2017)

Written by Neil Gaiman and first published in 2001, American Gods is an award-winning, fantasy novel.  It is currently being adapted into a comic book series, published by Dark Horse Comics.  The novel won several fantasy-literary awards, and there is currently a hit television series adapted from the novel and televised on the cable network, Starz Media.  American Gods blends Americana and also ancient and modern mythology to tell the story of a man caught in a war between the gods of the Old World and the new American gods.

Frequent Gaiman collaborator, P. Craig Russell, is the guiding hand behind the American Gods comic book.  Russell wrote the script adaptation of Gaiman's novel and provided the layouts for the art.  American Gods the comic book is drawn and colored by Scott Hampton and lettered by Rick Parker.

American Gods #4 finds the protagonist, Shadow Moon, and his mysterious employer, Mr. Wednesday in Chicago.  There, they meet an eccentric family tied to Wednesday's plans.  One of them, an elderly man named Czernobog, wants to play chess with Shadow, although the consequences for a loss by Shadow are dire.  There are also three sisters in the apartment, and one of them, Zorya Polunochnaya, has a gift for Shadow.  Plus, Mr. Ibis tells the “coming-to-America” story of Essie Tregowan – from the shores of Cornwall and the streets of London to early 18th century colonial Virginia.

Once again, dear reader, a reminder:  I am a big fan of American Gods, although I did not read it upon its original release in 2001.  I read the tenth anniversary edition which featured a longer text – the author's preferred edition.  I also feel that I must admit that I loved that book, and that “love” is not a strong enough word in this case.  American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition is one of my favorite books, and I consider the reading that edition of American Gods to be life-changing event for me in terms of my life as a writer.  True stuff, swear to an American god.

The main story by Russell and Hampton is, as usual, quite good, capturing the magic of Gaiman's book.  This time, however, the main feature is outshone by the back-up feature, the story of Essie Tregowan.  Drawn and colored by the incomparable Colleen Doran (who has previously collaborated with Neil Gaiman), the story reads like a fairy tale, the kind with the melancholy ending.

Doran is a respected comic book artist, but is perhaps under-appreciated as a comic book creator and publisher.  This story reminds us of her skills as a storyteller and perhaps, reveals to some and reminds others of the remarkable beauty of her comic book art and illustrations.  In the world of American comic books, Colleen Doran should be an American god.

So for the fourth time, I implore you to set aside your four dollars each month so that you can buy this lovely comic book, dear reader.  American Gods may end up being on the short list of great comic book adaptations of a prose novel.

Review: MISTER MIRACLE #1

MISTER MIRACLE No. 1 (OF 12)
DC COMICS – @DCComics

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

WRITER: Tom King
ART: Mitch Gerads
COLORS: Mitch Gerads
LETTERS: Clayton Cowles
COVER: Nick Derington
VARIANT COVER: Mitch Gerads
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (October 2017)

Suggested for mature readers

Mister Miracle created by Jack Kirby

“Meet Mister Miracle”

Mister Miracle is a DC Comics superhero created by Jack Kirby.  Mister Miracle first appeared in Mister Miracle #1 (cover dated:  April 1971) and is also known as Scott Free, who is the son of Highfather, ruler of New Genesis.  Highfather gave Scott to Darkseid, ruler of Apokolips, as part of a peace agreement.  Free would later escape to Earth where he became the apprentice of the escape artist Thaddeus Brown, the original Mister Miracle.

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mister Miracle's creator, Jack Kirby.  What better time than now to start this new comic book, Mister Miracle, a 12-issue miniseries (once called a “maxi-series”).  It is written by Tom King and drawn and colored by Mitch Gerads, the creative team behind the acclaimed DC Comics/Vertigo series, The Sheriff of Babylon.  King and Gerads are joined on this comic book by Clayton Cowles as letterer and Nick Derington as cover art.

Mister Miracle #1 (“Meet Mister Miracle”) finds Scott Free in a state of great distress.  He has attempted suicide by slitting his wrists... or is this another escape trick?  Everything is so confusing, and even his wife, Barda (Big Barda), seems different (brown eyes instead of blue).  Then, here are his brother, Orion; his sire, High Father; and the mega-tyrant, Darkseid.

Part of me wants to never read the King-Gerads Mister Miracle again, but part of me is intrigued.  This miniseries feels like one of those dark and edgy re-imaginings that DC Comics did quite a bit of in the 1980s (think Green Arrow).  Or maybe it is like one of those psychological romances, by which I mean a comic book that does an excavation of a DC Comics character's interior life or mind (think Batman: Arkham Asylum).

Really what Tom King is doing is introducing by way of teasing the direction of this story.  This is, as I said, intriguing, but also off-putting.  Mitch Gerads' art is a soundscape of shifting graphical dialects.  It is not that I think this art is bad, but I like my Mister Miracle Jack Kirby-style or at least done by an acolyte of Kirby's, say Steve Rude.

If I try the second issue of this Mister Miracle, I will talk to you about it, dear readers.

Review: BLACK TORCH Volume 1

BLACK TORCH, VOL. 1
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

MANGAKA: Tsuyoshi Takaki
TRANSLATION: Toshikazu Aizawa and Colin Leigh
LETTERS: Annaliese Christman
EDITOR: Marlene First
ISBN: 978-1-9747-0046-2; paperback (August 2018); Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
200pp, B&W, $9.99 U.S., $12.99 CAN, £6.99 U.K.

Black Torch is the first long-form manga from creator Tsuyoshi Takaki, previously known for his one-shot, Freaks.  Originally published in the Japanese manga magazines, Jump SQ, Black Torch follows the adventures of a young ninja caught in the middle of a war between ninjas and demons.  VIZ Media is publishing the manga in English as the graphic novel series, Black Torch.

Black Torch, Vol. 1 (Chapter 1 to 3) introduces Jiro Azuma, who is descended from a long line of ninja.  He can also talk to animals, and his rough and tumble appearance belies his compassionate nature.  He meets Rago, a mysterious, unique, and suspicious, stray black cat.  Jiro's compassion for animals will get him into trouble, when his encounter with Rago rudely introduces him to the world of the mononoke and changes his life forever.

The Black Torch manga is the kind of manga seemingly made for me.  It features both ninja and also supernatural creatures from Japanese myth, folklore, and fairy tales.

Black Torch Graphic Novel Volume 1 offers a lot of surprises, and although the text on the back cover spills some of it, I am determined to spoil as little as possible.  I loved reading this first volume, but it is far from perfect.  The narrative drags a little in the middle; in fact, I can accurately use the euphemism, “treading water,” to describe some portions of these first three chapters.

However, there are so many fantastic twists and turns, and when Tsuyoshi Takaki introduces a new character or concept, it serves to make the story richer and more attractive.  The battles are nice, and some of the creatures are chilling to behold, even straight scary.  I highly recommend Black Torch to fans of supernatural ninja fiction.
