The Squadron Supreme is a Marvel Comics superhero team. Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema, the group first appeared in a story arc that was published in Avengers #85–86 (cover dated: February to March 1971). The Squadron Supreme's membership was initially based on DC Comics' characters. The core members of the Squadron Supreme were Hyperion (Superman), Nighthawk (Batman), Doctor Spectrum (Green Lantern), Power Princess (Wonder Woman), and the Whizzer (Flash).
Throughout its history, the Squadron Supreme has made sporadic appearances in various Marvel Comics titles. For a time, the group's most memorable run came in Squadron Supreme, a 12-issue miniseries, published from mid-1985 to mid-1986 and written by the late Mark Gruenwald.
With the advent of the All-New, All-Different Marvel, the Squadron Supreme returns in a new ongoing comic book series, featuring, in some cases, alternate version of the characters that comprised the group's core membership. Squadron Supreme is written by James Robinson; drawn by Leonard Kirk (pencils) and Paul Neary (inks); colored by Frank Martin; and lettered by Travis Lanham, with covers by Alex Ross.
Squadron Supreme #1 opens eight months after the destruction wrought by events depicted in the nine-issue miniseries, Secret Wars. Hyperion (Marcus Milton of Earth 13034), Nighthawk (Kyle Richmond of Earth 31916), Doctor Spectrum (of Earth 4290001); Power Princess (Zarda Shelton of Earth 712), and Blur (Jeff Walters of Earth 148611) have gathered as the Squadron Supreme. Their first move is to exact revenge against the man they hold responsible for the destruction of their worlds, Namor. Their next move will put many on Earth on edge.
I was a few pages into this comic book when it became obvious that it was not for me. I knew that it was unlikely that I would read another issue unless someone gave me a hard copy, because I could not see bothering to read a digital copy. It looks as if writer James Robinson is trying to recreate Warren Ellis' brilliant Wildstorm comic book, The Authority, but without a sense of humor.
There is nothing that inker Paul Neary can do for Leonard Kirk's pencils, which are... average; I don't think another word is more appropriate. This comic book is not awful. It's just average – there goes that word again.

Marvel Comics #1 (with a cover date of October 1939) was first published on Aug. 31, 1939. It was the first comic book published by the company known as Timely Comics, a division of Timely Publications and a precursor of Marvel Comics. Marvel Comics would eventually take on the title, Marvel Mystery Comics.
Using the publication date of Marvel Comics #1, Marvel Comics has been celebrating its 80th anniversary throughout 2019. The biggest event of that celebration is a special comic book, Marvel Comics #1000. This massive collaborative effort features 80 different creative teams and showcases classic Marvel Comics characters and some brand new ones.
Each page of Marvel Comics #1000 is a single-page vignette that is the contribution of one of the 80 creative teams. The creative teams are a mixture of Marvel Comics luminaries (Roy Thomas, Chris Claremont, Alex Ross, to name a few), recent Marvel star creators (Jason Aaron, Joe Quesada), some rising Marvel creators (David F. Walker, Saladin Ahmed), some celebrities (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Neil Gaiman), and some inexplicable choices (J. Scott Campbell?!)
The guiding hand behind the story in this issue is Al Ewing, writer of the critically-acclaimed Hulk comic book series, Immortal Hulk. The very first panel of Marvel Comics #1000 is based on a panel from Marvel Comics #1, and it is the beginning of this comic book's first one-pager, which is entitled “Eight Bells.” It is written by Ewing; drawn by Steve Epting; colored by Frank D'Armata; and lettered by VC's Clayton Cowles. And while many of the one-pagers in Marvel Comics #1000 are about pivotal moments in Marvel Comics' past, the first one-page hints at an ancient conspiracy that runs through the history of the Marvel Universe.
“Eight Bells” recounts the introduction of the original Human Torch, an android by Professor Horton. From there, Ewing unveils a mystery in the Marvel Universe, one centered around an enigmatic artifact known as the “Eternity Mask.” Secret threads, secret connections, secret histories, and synchronicity, what is the mystery behind the Eternity Mask, an item that can take down both the powerful and weak Who will wear the mask now?
In the Diamond Previews online write-up for Marvel Comics #1000, Marvel declares it features “The Greatest Talent Ever Assembled for One Story.” Another line reads “...we have gathered together the greatest array of talent ever to be assembled between the covers of a single comic book!” Marvel has also described the creative line-ups for this Marvel Comics #1000 as “some Marvel icons, some first-timers” and “80 luminary creative teams.”
I understand hype, but I also believe that whoever wrote this does not quite understand the actual meaning of the world “luminary.” As for “the greatest talent ever assembled,” that is eye-rolling hype. Most of the contributors to Marvel Comics #1000 are solid professions, but for the most part have not produced enough work or any work that would justify them being called “great talents” and certainly not luminary. Also, the comic books that most of these new icons and “new luminaries” produce have contributed to the continued plummeting sales of comic books. Neil Gaiman is obviously a luminary, and after a few puffs of burning bush, I might grudgingly call Jason Aaron a luminary. But Matthew Rosenberg? – bitch, puh-lease.
For the record, here is a list of artists and writer-artists that have contributed substantially to Marvel Comics, but do not contribute to Marvel Comics #1000: Art Adams, John Byrne, Sal Buscema, Paul Gulacy, Frank Miller, Andy Kubert, Bob Layton, Jim Lee, Joe Madureira, Todd McFarlane, Bob McLeod, Jon J. Muth, John Romita, John Romita, Jr., Bill Sienkiewicz, Paul Smith, Jim Starlin, Kent Williams, Ron Wilson, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Mike Zeck
Here are the writers who have contributed greatly to Marvel and are not in Marvel Comics #1000: Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Joe Casey, J.M. DeMatteis, Matt Fraction, Steven Grant, David Michelinie, Mark Millar, Doug Moench, Grant Morrison, Ann Nocenti, Louise Simonson, and Marv Wolfman.
I can understand that there are a number of reasons why none of the above appear in Marvel Comics #1000. Some may have declined, and others may have chosen not to because they are retired or are in poor health. Others may have exclusive contracts with other publishers that prohibit them from committing any work for Marvel. Some may have had scheduling issues, but I think many simply were not asked to contribute.
A Marvel Comics 80th anniversary book without John Byrne and Frank Miller is just fucking stupid. I don't care what it took – even if someone had to get on his or her knees or drop trousers to convince them, Byrne and Miller had to be in this comic book. It is because of the work that Byrne and Miller produced for Marvel Comics from the 1970s to the mid-1980s that Marvel had a late 1980s.
And they couldn't get a Jack Kirby pin-up in this bitch? The comic books that Bendis, Brubaker, and Millar produced in the 2000s contributed greatly to the history-making and astounding amounts of money Marvel Entertainment's owners are now making from film adaptations of Marvel Comics' stories and characters. Bendis should have written the Miles Morales one-pager; because he didn't, I didn't even bother reading it.
There are some nice moments and pages in Marvel Comics #1000. I thought the Joe Quesada-Kevin Nowlan Daredevil page was beautiful. Other pages I liked: Roy Thomas and Rod Reis's Wolverine page; Jim Zub and Nick Bradshaw's Blade page; and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Jessica Jones page, to name a few.
The good stuff in Marvel Comics #1000 is tainted by the absence of so many true Marvel Comics luminaries and icons. Donny Cates is not a Marvel icon, nor is Gerry Duggan. Sorry; not now, but maybe later – much later. The powers-that-be at Marvel Comics should be honest. Marvel Comics #1000 is not so much an anniversary celebration as their childish need to have a Marvel title reach a thousandth issue because DC Comics recently had two – Action Comics #1000 and Detective Comics #1000. And Marvel was going to have their 1000 even if they had to fudge the numbers.

Captain America created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
“Winter in America” Part 1
Captain America is a Marvel Comics superhero created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Captain America was Steve Rogers, a frail young man who reached the peak of human perfection via the experimental “super soldier” serum.
He first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (cover dated: March 1941), which was published by Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics. After Captain America Comics was canceled in 1949, there was a revival of the series from 1953 to 1954. Captain America fully returned to modern comic books in The Avengers #4 (cover dated: March 1964).
Steve Rogers/Captain America embarks on a new beginning again with a relaunch of his title series. The new Captain America comic book series is written by Ta-Nehisi Coates; drawn by Leinil Francis Yu (pencils) and Gerry Alanguilan (inks); colored by Sunny Gho; and lettered by Joe Caramagna. In the new series, Captain America faces an existential crises as he wrestles with how people view and perceive him in the wake of the Hydra Captain America impostor that briefly took over the world as an authoritarian dictator.
Captain America #1 opens in the Sayan Mountains of Russia months earlier. There, something new is emerging from the ashes of Hydra. In the present day, Captain America and the Winter Solider battle a small army of men who resemble Cap's old adversary, Nuke. They are killing civilians in a mass shooting event in and around the National Mall in Washington D.C. As Captain America battles to save lives and stop these killers, he will also have to face another harsh reality. No one really trusts him anymore... even the people who should know him best.
I would not call Captain America #1 2018 a great comic book, but it is the best written Captain America comic book that I have read in ages. Ta-Nehisi Coates cleverly uses the battle at the National Mall's aftermath to depict not so much Captain America in crisis, but the Sentinel of Liberty as man at odds with the people, places, and nation he has sworn to protect and to defend. It makes for great reading, because we known this is the true Captain America, but the dramatic tension brought by the distrust of Cap from the other characters makes for some good reading.
Leinil Francis Yu has been a skilled graphical storyteller for over two decades, but his drawing style has taken an ugly turn the last several years – as far as I am concerned. He is better here, and Sunny Gho's evocative colors strengthen how the narrative conveys its ideas and heightens the drama. Letterer Joe Caramagna creates a steady sense of rhythm that paces the narrative flow for both the action scenes and for the character scenes that confront Captain America.
I think Ta-Nehisi Coates will make me a regular Captain America reader for the first time in ages. I think this is the beginning of a good age for Captain America.

Iron Man created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby
Self-Made Man: Part One “What's the Big Idea?”
Iron Man is a Marvel Comics superhero that debuted in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated: March 1963). Iron Man is the alter-ego of Tony Stark, a weapons manufacturer, industrialist, and wealthy, glamorous ladies' man. After an accident, Stark builds a suit of armor to save his life, and with that armor, Stark becomes “Iron Man.”
In the midst of another restart event, Marvel Comics has launched a new Iron Man comic book. It is entitled Tony Stark: Iron Man. It written by Dan Slott; drawn by Valerio Schiti; colored by Edgar Delgado; and lettered by Joe Caramagna.
Tony Stark: Iron Man #1 (“What's the Big Idea?”) finds Tony reunited with a former rival, Andy Bhang, whom Tony wants to join the team of geniuses at “Stark Unlimited.” However, the arrival of the legendary super-beast, Fin Fang Foom, will test Tony smarts, Iron Man's armor and tech, and Bhang's place among the “team Stark genius collection.”
Dan Slott was a writer on The Amazing Spider-Man comic book series beginning in 2008, and he became the series sole writer beginning in 2010. Surfing the Internet, I often got the feeling that a lot of Spider-Man readers had enough of him; they thought he had been writing Amazing for too long. After being a regular reader of The Amazing Spider-Man during my childhood, teen years, and young adulthood, I stopped being a regular reader in early 1990s. I returned for a few years in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I returned again as a regular reader about four years ago.
I like Dan Slott's The Amazing Spider-Man, which feels like classic ASM: humor, action, cliffhanger thrills, and occasional heartbreaking and poignant stories, but he did recently exit the series after The Amazing Spider-Man #801. Now, as the lead Iron Man writer, I think he will bring a similar tone to Tony Stark: Iron Man. I am not crazy about that because I was perfectly happy with Brian Michael Bendis chronicling the adventures of the new Iron Man, Riri Williams/Iron Heart, in Invincible Iron Man and Victor Von Doom as Iron Man in Infamous Iron Man.
Even the artist Tony Stark: Iron Man, Valerio Schiti, reminds me of Stuart Immonen, who drew many issues of Slott's Amazing Spider-Man comic books over the last two years. Tony Stark: Iron Man is not a bad comic book. It is well written and well drawn, but I am not sure that I am ready for Dan Slott's “The Amazing Iron Man,” even if it is entitled Tony Stark: Iron Man, the way I was always down for Slott's The Amazing Spider-Man.
