Review: COVER #1
COVER No. 1
DC COMICS/Jinxworld – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Brian Michael Bendis
ART: David Mack
COLORS: Zu Orzu
LETTERS: Carlos Mangual
EDITOR: Michael McCalister
COVER: David Mack
VARIANT COVERS: Zu Orzu
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (November 2018)
Rated “M” for “Mature”
Cover created by Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack
Cover is a new comic book series from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Mack, two of the most interesting comic book creators of the last two decades. Through work on various Spider-Man titles, his creator-owned Powers, and other work, Bendis has proved to be an all-time great comic book writer. Mack's striking illustrations, comic book graphics, and cover paintings mark him as a master of comics art. Cover focuses on an indy comic book artist who finds himself drawn into the world of international espionage and intrigue.
Cover #1 opens in the middle of a hectic crowd scene at a comic book convention. Max Field is just another independent comic book creator and artist hawking his wares from behind a convention table. Out of nowhere, a mysterious (and apparently wealthy) fan appears before Max's table, praising his art. She even spends a few thousand dollars buying original art from Max's comic book, “Ninja Sword Odyssey.” This encounter and financial windfall will not be the last time Max meets the woman who might be his biggest fan, Julia.
I don't have much to say about Cover #1 (although I have been known to ramble even after saying this) because Bendis and Mack are, as I said above, masters. Cover #1 is filled with Bendis' exquisite dialogue and his hypnotic narrative flow. Every panel of this story is a drug that hooks the reader into going to the next panel in order to get his or her story fix.
Mack's illustrations tell an intoxicating graphical story; I would not expect less of him. Zu Orzu's gorgeous digital coloring captures Mack's lovely way of drawing Julia's beautiful Black woman's face. Carlos Mangual's lettering adds to the beauty of these graphics, and his word balloons create a kind of lyrical flow to Bendis' dialogue.
See. The creative team is made up of masters of the medium and veteran heavy hitters. The story may be a little far-fetched (or maybe not...), but when top creators produce something, it is worth a look. Cover #1 is worthy of several looks.

Pearl created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos
Pearl is the title of a new comic book series from writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos, the creators of Marvel Comics' Jessica Jones. The series focuses on an accidental assassin whose life changes when she meets another assassin who is like her in some ways.
Pearl #1 opens in San Francisco and introduces Pearl, who is an exceptional tattoo artist and also an assassin for one of modern-day San Fran's yakuza clans. Then, at a coffee shop, Pearl meets Rick, who recognizes a tattoo on her wrist, a work of art executed by the legendary and reclusive tattoo artist, Iriguci. The meeting, an act of serendipity or of fate, drags Pearl deeper into a world of violence that she is desperate to escape.
I can keep this review short. I love Pearl. Brian Bendis' writing is blunt and straight to the point in a way that reminds me of the late Darwyn Cooke's comics adaptation of Richard Stark's Parker prose novels. Sparse dialogue and powerful confrontations drive this narrative. Letterer Joshua Reed emphasizes the directness of the dialogue with his emotive lettering.
Michael Gaydos'a illustrations and graphical storytelling offer stunning background detail and beautiful facial drawings. Gaydos also draws some of the most elegant figures in clothing that I have ever seen in comic books. I did not know comic book characters could “wear it” so well.
Pearl #1, as a bonus, includes the first Bendis/Gaydos collaboration, which is a Batman short story from The Batman Chronicles #21 (cover dated: Summer 2000). It is a cute novelty piece, but cannot match the power of the main story, the work of two now accomplished, veteran comic book creators.
[This comic book contains a reprint of the Batman “Elseworlds” story, “Citizen Wayne,” by Bendis, Gaydos, Janice Chiang, and Patricia Mulvihill.]

Review: ACTION COMICS #1001
ACTION COMICS No. 1001

STORY: Brian Michael Bendis
ART: Patrick Gleason
COLORS: Alejandro Sanchez

COVER: Patrick Gleason with Brad Anderson
VARIANT COVER: Francis Manapul
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (September 2018)
Rated “T” for “Teen”
Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
“Invisible Mafia”
DC Comics' Superman comic books enter a new era with a new head writer and a new Superman #1 issue (the third in seven years). Superman is the most famous DC Comics superhero character. Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 (cover dated: June 1938). And now a thousand issues later, Brian Michael Bendis is the writer of Action Comics. His creative cohorts on Action Comics include artist Patrick Gleason, colorist Alejandro Sanchez, and letterer Josh Reed.
Action Comics #1001 (“Invisible Mafia”) finds Superman stopping a armed burglary. Then, Superman is back to being Clark Kent, and returns to his job at the venerable newspaper, The Daily Planet. That is where Clark Kent learns that someone has accused Superman of being the arsonist responsible for a rash of horrible apartment fires that have spread across the city of Metropolis. The truth may be connected to a shadowy cabal, but can Superman convince people that he is not an arsonist when some of them are starting to be suspicious of the Man of Steel?
As I have already written a few times, I really want to like Brian Michael Bendis' Superman comic books. For the most part, I enjoyed his debut series, The Man of Steel, a six-issue miniseries, and his recent Superman #1.
I think that I like Action Comics #1001 the most, at least by a little. Patrick Gleason's illustrations bring out the best of Bendis' script for this issue. His story is a mix of workplace intrigue and comedy; a little detective story, and super-powered conspiracy. Gleason works the drama and humor in such a subtle way that I found myself surprised that some moment of the story really hit me. Bendis spends so much of the story working and playing with a large cast of characters, a variety of genders, ages, and ethnicity, and Gleason captures the breath of Bendis' character drama.
Alejandro Sanchez's colors are lush, but are also evocative in the way they reveal the personality of both the characters and the stories. Letterer Josh Reed deftly spreads out all those balloons it takes to turn Bendis' dialogue into comic book graphics.
I like Action Comics #1001, and I give it a high recommendation without reservation.

Review: SUPERMAN #1
SUPERMAN No. 1 (2018)
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Brian Michael Bendis
PENCILS: Ivan Reis
INKS: Joe Prado
COLORS: Alex Sinclair
LETTERS: Josh Reed
COVER: Ivan Reis and Joe Prado with Alex Sinclair
VARIANT COVERS: Adam Hughes; David Mack
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (September 2018)
Rated “T” for “Teen”
Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
“The Unity Saga”
Superman the comic book series enters a new era with a new writer and a new #1 issue (the third in seven years). Superman is the most famous DC Comics superhero character. Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 (cover dated: June 1938). Superman was first a baby named “Kal-El” from the doomed planet Krypton. Brought to Earth on a rocket ship (or space craft), Baby Kal was adopted by Martha and Thomas Kent, who named him “Clark Kent.”
Clark would grow up to be the superhero, Superman, and his activities and adventures were first chronicled in Action Comics. A year later, Superman would get his own eponymous title when the comic book entitled Superman #1 debuted. Now, comes a new Superman series. It is written by the new primary Superman comic book writer, Brian Michael Bendis. It is drawn by artists Ivan Reis (pencils) and Joe Prado (inks); colored by Alex Sinclair; and lettered by Josh Reed.
Superman #1 (2018) finds The Man of Steel stopping an invasion of Earth by the “Dominators” dead in its tracks. [The Dominators a.k.a. “Dominion” were first seen in Adventures Comics #361 (October 1967), but are probably best known for being the villains in the 1988-89 comic book miniseries and crossover event, Invasion!]. Then, it is time to build a new “Fortress of Solitude,” have two separate meetings with fellow Justice League teammates, save the day several times, and discover something shocking about our planet.
I really want to like Brian Michael Bendis' Superman comic books, and for the most part, I enjoyed his debut series, The Man of Steel, a six-issue miniseries. It could never live up to my ridiculously high expectations, but I actually wanted more of The Man of Steel. Well, Superman #1 starts the process of meeting my Bendis Superman needs and expectations.
Bendis fills this first issue with wonderful surprises and sub-plots. Ivan Reis' pencil art and compositions are lushly illustrated, and have a sparkling quality thanks to Joe Prado's intricate and detailed inks. Colorist supreme Alex Sinclair delivers hues that have an opulent quality. Josh Reed does some heavy lifting finding the right spots in the art to place word balloons and boxes. This is a very well put together graphics package
I get the feeling that Bendis is going to portray Superman/Clark Kent as having to confront, deal with, and manage all his persona and all aspects of his personal, private, secret, and super lives. I really like Superman #1 (2018), and I think my ridiculously high expectations might be met.

Review: YOUNG JUSTICE #1
YOUNG JUSTICE No. 1 (2019)
DC COMICS/Wonder Comics – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Brian Michael Bendis
ART: Patrick Gleason
COLORS: Alejandro Sanchez
LETTERS: DC Lettering
EDITORS: Mike Cotton and Andy Khouri
COVER: Patrick Gleason and Alejandro Sanchez
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Amy Reeder; Derrick Chew; Yasmine Putri; Jorge Jimenez; Evan “Doc” Shaner; Patrick Gleason
40pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (March 2019)
Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
“Seven Crises”
Young Justice is a DC Comics superhero team that consists of teenage heroes. The first iteration of Young Justice appeared in the one-shot comic book, Young Justice: The Secret #1 (cover dated: June 1998), which lead to the first issue of an ongoing series (cover dated: September 1998). The new year 2019 sees a new Young Justice ongoing series.
DC Comics and superstar writer Brian Michael Bendis have launched a young readers imprint, “Wonder Comics,” which will feature in-continuity stories. The first Wonder Comics series is Young Justice. It is written by Bendis; drawn by Patrick Gleason; colored by Alejandro Sanchez; and lettered by DC Lettering.
Young Justice #1 (“Seven Crises”) opens in Gemworld. [You remember that place, right? Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld?] Gemworld apparently has suffered through seven “Crisis” events, and Earth is always the focal point. So invade Earth, specifically Metropolis, and demand that Superman appear.
Jinny Hex, Robin/Tim Drake, (fake) Wonder Girl/Cassie Sandsmark, Impulse, and Teen Lantern fight an invasion that they don't understand. Young Justice is back!
Young Justice #1 is not nearly as good as classic Brian Michael Bendis-written first issues he did for Marvel Comics (New Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man, various Iron Man and Miles Morales comic books series). No, make that Young Justice #1 is not anywhere in the same league as classic Bendis Marvel #1 issues.
Young Justice #1 is a fight comic featuring wall-to-wall action. Patrick Gleason's art here is not his best, and his storytelling is similar to what readers will find in event comics – big action not big drama. Colorist Alejandro Sanchez turns in professional work... that is not his best. DC Lettering, whatever or whoever that is, at least hits high notes on the character logos.
I expect a lot of Bendis comic books, and I might read future issues of Young Justice. Young Justice #1 is good, but not good enough to make me anxious for a second issue, the way I hankered for the second issues of classic Bendis Marvel titles.
