DC Comics' “Year of the Villain” is a crossover comic book event that officially kicks off in July 2019 with Year of the Villain: The Offer. Although the beginnings of the event have already been hinted at in regular DC Comics titles like Action Comics, on May 1st, 2019, readers got a first look at “Year of the Villain” a specially priced comic book.
DC's Year of the Villain Special #1 is a .25¢ special preview comic book. It contains what are essentially the three opening or prologue chapters of “Year of the Villain.” They are “Doom,” “Leviathan,” and “Justice.” The final eight pages of this comic book comprise an article that offers text pieces, art, sketches, and a list of 20 individual comic book issues that lead up to the official beginning of “Year of the Villain.”
The following paragraphs include a brief synopsis and review of each of the three chapters offered in DC's Year of the Villain Special #1:
“Doom”
STORY: Scott Snyder
ART: Jim Cheung
COLOR: Tomeu Morey
LETTERS: Tom Napolitano
EDITOR: Marie Javins
Amanda Blake Waller, the leader of multiple clandestine agencies, including “Task Force X” (a.k.a. The Suicide Squad), has arrived at the White House for a meeting with the President of the United States. What she finds instead is Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom. Luthor has an offer to make Waller and every supervillain on Earth.
I wasn't planning on reading “Year of the Villain,” but this tense, exciting, eight-page piece got me interested in this event. I generally don't like comic book events, but... Plus, there is a shocking ending, and I rarely can resist the lovely art of Jim Cheung, in this case, expertly colored by the great Tomeu Morey.
“Leviathan”
STORY: Brian Michael Bendis
ART: Alex Maleev
COLORS: Alex Maleev
LETTERS: Josh Reed
EDITOR: Mike Cotton
Batgirl has arrived in Seattle to join Green Arrow in battling Merlyn. However, Merlyn is desperate to tell them something... until Leviathan arrives. Later, Robin (Damian Wayne) has a shocking question to ask his father, Batman.
This chapter does not start off that strongly; then, it explodes. Plus, the last panel with Damian offers an explosive surprise. Oh, and I can't resist the team of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev.
“Justice”
STORY: James Tynion IV
ART: Francis Manapul
COLOR: Francis Manapul
LETTERS: Tom Napolitano
EDITOR: Marie Javins
The Justice League is at the “Universe's End,” trying to save the Gorathian System from the void. With so much mind-bending rescues to make, Superman announces that it is time to make the League grow. Which heroes will get the call? Batman has a simple answer.
If you are still in doubt about “Year of the Villain,” this eight-page treat will put those doubts to rest. I think you will want to at least sample some more. Plus, this story offers lovely Francis Manapul art.
DC Insider: Year of the Villain
WRITER: Andrew Serwin
EDITOR: Mike Cotton
There is a lot of information here. The lists of pertinent comic books that readers will need to fully enjoy the beginnings of “Year of the Villain” will make preview comic book a must-have.

Review: ACTION COMICS #1001
ACTION COMICS No. 1001

Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
“Invisible Mafia”
DC Comics' Superman comic books enter a new era with a new head writer and a new Superman #1 issue (the third in seven years). Superman is the most famous DC Comics superhero character. Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 (cover dated: June 1938). And now a thousand issues later, Brian Michael Bendis is the writer of Action Comics. His creative cohorts on Action Comics include artist Patrick Gleason, colorist Alejandro Sanchez, and letterer Josh Reed.
Action Comics #1001 (“Invisible Mafia”) finds Superman stopping a armed burglary. Then, Superman is back to being Clark Kent, and returns to his job at the venerable newspaper, The Daily Planet. That is where Clark Kent learns that someone has accused Superman of being the arsonist responsible for a rash of horrible apartment fires that have spread across the city of Metropolis. The truth may be connected to a shadowy cabal, but can Superman convince people that he is not an arsonist when some of them are starting to be suspicious of the Man of Steel?
As I have already written a few times, I really want to like Brian Michael Bendis' Superman comic books. For the most part, I enjoyed his debut series, The Man of Steel, a six-issue miniseries, and his recent Superman #1.
I think that I like Action Comics #1001 the most, at least by a little. Patrick Gleason's illustrations bring out the best of Bendis' script for this issue. His story is a mix of workplace intrigue and comedy; a little detective story, and super-powered conspiracy. Gleason works the drama and humor in such a subtle way that I found myself surprised that some moment of the story really hit me. Bendis spends so much of the story working and playing with a large cast of characters, a variety of genders, ages, and ethnicity, and Gleason captures the breath of Bendis' character drama.
Alejandro Sanchez's colors are lush, but are also evocative in the way they reveal the personality of both the characters and the stories. Letterer Josh Reed deftly spreads out all those balloons it takes to turn Bendis' dialogue into comic book graphics.
I like Action Comics #1001, and I give it a high recommendation without reservation.

I Reads You Review: DETECTIVE COMICS #30
DETECTIVE COMICS #30
DC COMICS – @DCComics
WRITERS: Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato
ARTIST: Francis Manapul
COLORS: Brian Buccellato
LETTERS: Jared K. Fletcher
COVER: Francis Manapul
VARIANT COVER: Hermann Mejia
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (June 2014)
Rated T
Batman created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger
Icarus Part One
As a writer-artist duo, Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato launched The New 52 version of the Flash comic book series. Now, they are the new creative team on Detective Comics. Writer/artist Manapul and writer/colorist Buccellato start their run on the series with what looks to be a potent story arc, entitled Icarus.
Detective Comics #30 (Icarus Part One) finds Batman breaking up a kidnapping ring in Gotham City’s Chinatown. Later, Bruce Wayne considers entering into a partnership with Elena Aquila and her Aquila Healthy Families Initiative. That real estate development deal doesn’t sit well with everyone, including local politicians and a vicious crime boss known as “The Squid.”
I only read Flash #1 of The New 52 Flash series, but I really liked it and plan on returning to it and reading at least the Manapul-Buccellato issues. If issue Detective Comics #30 is a good indication, this team’s run on this seminal Batman comic book series will be a good one.
I am especially impressed by Manapul’s imaginative and creative page design (especially the bottom third of Page 9 of the story). This story arc is intriguing, made even more so by the coloring, which gives an added jolt of electricity that made me anticipate each page. I’m ready to read issue #31 to get a better feel for the series, but right now, I like this enough to give it a high grade.

(Spoiler Alert)
This was a yakety yak issue if I ever read one. This was an in depth view into the same old same old. If you didn't know the Flash's origin, then, I would tell you to read this. The gang just told us a nice little yarn with me being no more enlightened than when I started. I knew Barry Allen was a good man before I read this story. What was new? He stayed in a coma. He won a spelling bee. His uniform had to be armor. The only action in the story was a bank robbery. I feel like I'm cheating you out of your time by writing this review, but you didn't pay $2.99 to read this. There is a good reason to call this issue #0. This did not reach the bar set by other #0 stories.
I rate Flash #0 Don't Waste Your Time and Cash.

I Reads You Review: JUSTICE LEAGUE #4
JUSTICE LEAGUE #4
DC COMICS
WRITER: Geoff Johns
PENCILS: Jim Lee
INKS: Scott Williams
COLORS: Alex Sinclair with Gabe Eltaeb
LETTERS: Patrick Brosseau
COVER: Jim Lee and Scott Williams, with Alex Sinclair
VARIANT COVER: Andy Kubert with Alex Sinclair
40pp, Color, $3.99/$4.99 (combo pack) U.S.
I consider Justice League to be the flagship title of “The New 52,” DC Comics’ re-launch of its superhero comic book line. And what a flagship it is – all big and shiny and full of pretty art and big action scenes. As I’ve written in previous reviews, Justice League may be mediocre for all I know, but I’m too in love with this series to think of it as anything other than fantastic.
Justice League #4 (“Part Four”) opens in the Red Room at S.T.A.R. Labs in Detroit, as Victor Stone emerges from his Promethium transformation. Shocked at what he’s become, Victor is about to discover just how transformed he is. In the wake of his sudden appearance, Aquaman must prove his mettle to some among the small gathering of superheroes: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Flash. Now, the adversary behind the inter-dimensional/alien invasion of Earth will be revealed.
It has been three months since I read the third issue of Justice League, which was a good thing. I needed to take a step back. The plan was to come back with the ability to take a critical look at this series. To hell with that! I love this new Justice League.
I was not a fan of Geoff Johns because I had read next to nothing of his work prior to this Justice League series, but I like what he is doing here. He has created an engaging dynamic between the characters, mixing rivalry, jealousy, and heroism into a pleasing character ensemble.
But let’s get serious. This is the Jim Lee show, with his able assistants, inker Scott Williams and colorist Alex Sinclair, also shining in their skill sets. I think action movies have influenced Lee’s storytelling as much as any comic book writer, artist, or writer/artist. Practically every page, even the ones with multiple panels, features one big panel that creates a sense of scale for the reader. It is as if Lee wants to remind us that this isn’t just another superhero fight; this is a Bruckheimer/Bay movie.
Williams’ macho inking makes the art seem real, but not photo-real, by depicting detail in everything from Steve Trevor’s uniform and gear to Victor Stone’s new body. Alex Sinclair’s colors shimmer, pop off the pages, and sometimes surprisingly, subtly create mood. Yes, I was right last year. This is good.
For extras, there are two pages of Flashes sketches by Francis Manapul and a (faux) dossier on S.T.A.R. Laboratories employees.

The New 52 Review: FLASH #1
"Fast and Furious"
FLASH #1
DC COMICS
WRITERS: Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato
ARTIST: Francis Manapul
COLORS: Brian Buccellato
LETTERS: Sal Cipriano
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S.
The Flash is a comic book superhero created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. Flash’s power is super-speed, which includes the ability to run, move extremely fast, and use superhuman reflexes. The original Flash (or Golden Age Flash, as the character is known) first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (cover date January 1940). He was Jay Garrick, a college student who gained his speed through the inhalation of hard water vapors.
The best known Flash, “the Silver Age Flash,” first appeared in Showcase #4 (cover date October 1956). He is police scientist Barry Allen, who gained super-speed when bathed by chemicals after a shelf of them was struck by lightning. Allen took the name of The Flash after reading a comic book featuring the Golden Age Flash, whom he’d later meet.
As Flash #1 opens, it seems as if everyone is at the Central City Technology Symposium. Barry Allen is in attendance with his colleague and close friend, Patty Spivot. When armed men crash the symposium, Barry springs into action as Flash only to discover the involvement of an old friend – an old friend with a perplexing problem.
This new Flash title stands as one of my favorite of The New 52. Once upon a time, I was a huge fan of The Flash, but I never thought that I could love it as I once did. Co-writer/artist Francis Manapul and co-writer/colorist Brian Buccellato have turned in a gem of a comic book that is at once familiar as a Flash comic book, but also reads as something new. To me, it perfectly captures what The New 52 is supposed to be about, something accessible to new readers that is true to the character and its past.
As good as they are as a writing team, Manapul and Buccellato make an even better art team. Manapul has a pretty visual style built on solid compositions and the ability to draw just about anything. He has a clean, simple style that harks back to the Silver Age, but is thoroughly modern. Buccellato creates colors that seem right out of a Walt Disney animated feature (pre-CAPS); some pages of this comic book look like watercolors. Buccellato gives the art texture and even life.
I have to have more of this Flash.
