Watchmen created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
“That Annihilated Place”
Watchmen was a limited series comic book written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons. It was initially published by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987 as a 12-issue maxiseries (a term DC still uses). Since that time, DC has published the entire series in numerous paperback and hardcover collections and limited editions.
Doomsday Clock is a new 12-issue miniseries or “maxiseries” from DC Comics. It is written by Geoff Johns; drawn by Gary Frank; colored by Brad Anderson; and lettered by Rob Leigh. Doomsday Clock will introduce characters from Moore and Gibbons' Watchmen into the main DC Comics Universe.
Doomsday Clock #1 (“That Annihilated Place”) opens on November 22, 1992 on the world in which Watchmen is set. The story opens in the aftermath of the apparent revelation of Ozymandias' scheme to bring peace among nations and mankind to the Earth (as seen in Watchmen #12). However, the world is now on the brink of destruction, and Ozymandias is a wanted man.
Rorschach, whose diary revealed Ozymandias' scheme, is believed to be dead, but he is alive and in prison. Is this the same Rorschach who was once a colleague of Ozymandias and later, his ultimate challenger? And what does Rorschach want of a fellow prisoner?
In the thirty years since it first published Watchmen, DC Comics has not been able to publish any superhero comic book that was nearly as popular or as influential as Moore and Gibbons' masterpiece. While I think that Watchmen was one of the best comic books of its time, I don't think that it is the “greatest comic book of all time,” as some think, and I have moved on.
DC Comics has not, and that is why it published, beginning in 2012, “Before Watchmen,” a series of miniseries (and a single-issue comic book) set in the world of and taking place before Watchmen. Because DC cannot move on and/or cannot replicate Watchmen, we now have Doomsday Clock, a kind of sequel.
I have to admit to liking Doomsday Clock #1. The first issue intrigues, but it requires that readers have more than a passing knowledge of Watchmen in order to fully enjoy it. Geoff Johns is nowhere near as good or as imaginative a comic book writer as Alan Moore, but Johns, at times, can be quite good and inventive at times, also.
While Gary Frank is no Dave Gibbons, Frank's drawing style is similar to Gibbons', and Frank is stylish and skillful. I also think that Frank has the talent to deliver great comics works, but thus far in his career, he has only produced pretty art in a number of high-quality comic books that are often little more than entertainment product – McComics, if you will. Some of those I would call exceptional, but, like a lot of comic book artists, Frank has yet to find a writer that can not only bring out of his best work, but also challenge him to deliver a masterpiece.
So I do not think that Geoff Johns and Gary Frank will produce in Doomsday Clock anything nearly as impressive or as memorable as Watchmen. I do think Johns and Frank could produce a comic book that is better than most superhero comic books that DC Comics currently publishes or has published in the last 30 years. Doomsday Clock #1 hints that it could happen.

Kingsman: The Secret Service created by Mark Miller, Dave Gibbons, and Matthew Vaughn
The Secret Service was a 2012 six-issue comic book miniseries created by writer Mark Millar, artist Dave Gibbons, and filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class). It was published by Icon, a pseudo-creator owned imprint of Marvel Comics. Vaughn directed a film loosely adapted from this comic book that was entitled Kingsman: The Secret Service. [The Secret Service comic book has since been re-branded as Kingsman: The Secret Service to tie-in closer to the film franchise.]
The Secret Service was apparently inspired by “classic” James Bond films and the spy thriller genre in general. The story focused on a super-spy and his young and wayward nephew whom he recruits into “the secret service.” With the impending arrival of a second film, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, there is a new six-issue comic book, Kingsman: The Red Diamond. It is written by Rob Williams; drawn by Simon Fraser; colored by Gary Caldwell; and lettered by Peter Doherty.
Kingsman: The Red Diamond #1 finds Gary “Eggsy” London living the ribald life of a highly effective British secret agent and man-about-town. As the story begins, Eggsy is called to rescue a royal, but while the mission is successful, Eggsy does something that gets him in trouble. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Eggsy, another world-beating supervillain plots to destroy civilization.
I found the original Kingsman: The Secret Service comic book miniseries to be earthy, droll, nonchalant, and rather grounded, unlike the slickly-produced film. Kingsman: The Red Diamond #1 also lacks polish, which I consider a good thing. This first issue opens in such an unassuming manner that you might mistake it for a disaster in the making, but writer Rob Williams offers lots of surprises and delightful little shocks to make this an enjoyable read. Plus, Williams teases the new villain in that perfect kind of way that makes readers want to come back for the second issue.
The art and graphical storytelling by Simon Fraser is acceptable, but considering that Fraser is following a legend and exceptionally gifted comic book artist like Dave Gibbons, maybe Fraser is not quite acceptable as he would be following an artist who was not a shining light. It is almost as if The Red Diamond is being produced on the cheap.
In the end, however, I want to read more Kingsman: The Red Diamond, and this series may have even more surprises in store for its readers. The creative team may also blossom as the series advances.
[This comic book has a preview of “Maestros” by Steve Skroce, Dave Stewart, and Fonografiks.]

INKS: Klaus Janson

LETTERS: Clem Robins

Batman created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (also known simply as The Dark Knight Returns) was a four-issue comic book miniseries starring Batman. Published by DC Comics in 1986, this prestige-format comic book was written by Frank Miller; drawn by Miller (pencils) and Klaus Janson (inks); colored by Lynn Varley; and lettered by John Costanza, with the book covers drawn by Miller and Varley.
Individually, the books were entitled “The Dark Knight Returns” (Book One); “Dark Knight Triumphant” (Book Two); “Hunt the Dark Knight” (Book Three); and “The Dark Knight Falls” (Book Four). The series takes place in a future in which Bruce Wayne is 55 and retired from being Batman. Gotham City's ongoing troubles give Wayne the reason he uses to bring Batman out of retirement, but Batman faces opposition from the city government and the police force. The series introduces a new Robin, a girl named Carrie Kelley; depicts Batman's final battle with The Joker; and culminates with a confrontation against Superman, which leaves the world thinking that Batman is dead.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (also known as “DKR”) yielded a three-volume sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again (also known as “DK2”), published by DC Comics from late 2001 into 2002. DC Comics has spent the last four years reliving its mid to late 1980s glory days, so now, there is a second sequel to The Dark Knight Returns. This is an eight-issue series entitled Dark Knight III: The Master Race (also known as DKIII). It is written by Frank Miller and Brian Azzarello; drawn by Andy Kubert (pencils) and Klaus Janson (inks); colored by Brad Anderson; and lettered by Clem Robins.
Kubert and Janson will be the lead cover artists, but DC is publishing numerous variant covers, about 50 for the issue of DKIII. Each issue will also include an insert entitled “Dark Knight Universe Presents” drawn by different art teams and written by Miller and Azzarello... apparently.
Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 opens with the return (once again) of Batman, but this time, the authority in Gotham City is even less welcoming. Commissioner Yindel and the rest of the Gotham City Police Department are ready to take-down Batman. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman fights and a legendary small city wants help, while Superman remains in limbo.
Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 is not as good as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Book One. Let's just get that out of the way. DKIII colorist Brad Anderson is nowhere nearly as good as DKR colorist, the legendary Lynn Varley (Frank Miller's ex-wife), whose watercolor-like hues were both subtle and vivid. There is nothing distinguishing about the work of DKIII letterer Clem Robins, certainly not in the way DKR's John Costanza's lettering was so distinctive.
DKIII's art team of Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson capture the spirit and some of the style of DKR's Frank Miller and Janson. Kubert, however, does not match the imaginative page layouts and awe-inspiring design that Miller gave the original work.
There is a rumor that Frank Miller has contributed relatively little to the storytelling in DKIII. Word is that DC Comics was developing DKIII independently of Miller and went to him after they'd already made the decision to produce the project. At the very least, Azzarello is clearly writing the scripts. It shows. This is not bad work, but nothing about this suggests the imagination and inventiveness that Frank Miller has brought to all his work: the good stuff, the bad stuff, and the ambivalent experimental work. Azzarello, as good as he can be, cannot be like Frank Miller because he is not in Miller's league, no matter how much Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, and the powers at DC Comics pretend he is.
Things could change; I could be delightfully surprised. But right now Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 is no more special than any other Batman comic book that is a particularly good read.

Frank Miller actually pencils Dark Knight Universe Presents: The Atom #1, with Klaus Janson inking. And no, it does not remind me of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns or Frank Miller's run on Daredevil, on which Janson was Miller's most frequent collaborator and partner.
This has potential, but it lacks the spark of any of Miller's best work.

Rocketeer created by Dave Stevens
Long live The Rocketeer!
Born in 1955, Dave Stevens was an illustrator, artist, and storyteller who worked on newspaper comic strips and as a storyboard artist on both live-action and animated films and also for television. Many, like me, know Stevens for his comic book work. While there was not much of it, what Stevens did produce was spectacular and beautiful.
His most famous comic book creation is The Rocketeer, a superhero Stevens first introduced in 1982. The Rocketeer’s style and the mode of his adventures recall the Saturday matinee heroes of the 1930s and 1940s. The Rocketeer’s exploits are mainly set in and around Los Angeles, beginning in 1938 and into the 1940s. The Rocketeer even made it onto the big screen in a 1991 film from Walt Disney Pictures.
The Rocketeer is Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who discovers an experimental jet pack (or rocket pack). When he straps it on, Cliff can fly and becomes The Rocketeer. Cliff’s friend, Peevy, an airplane mechanic, helps him maintain and modify the rocket pack. Cliff’s girlfriend is the actress, Bettie, whom Stevens based on real life, 1950s pin-up and fetish model, Bettie Page.
Debuting in 2011, Rocketeer Adventures was an anthology series from IDW Publishing. Edited by Scott Dunbier, Rocketeer Adventures featured Rocketeer short stories (about 7 to 8 pages in length) produced by some of the most popular, imaginative, and unique creators in comic books. The series, which had a sequel, basically paid respect to Stevens (who died in 2008) and his most beloved creation.
Rocketeer Adventures #4 features three stories. The first is “A Day at the Beach,” written by Dave Gibbons and drawn by Scott Hampton, which finds the Rocketeer taking on surfboard thieves. In “Waterlogged,” written by Joe Pruett and drawn by Tony Harris, the Rocketeer battles a Japanese submarine. “The Flight of the Aeronaut,” written by John Arcudi with art by Brendan McCarthy and Jamie Grant, finds Cliff battling Nazis who want Peevy’s plans to improve the Rocketeer’s rocket pack.
“A Day at the Beach” shows off Scott Hampton’s technique in illustrated narrative, which I still find eye-catching decades after I first saw his work. The delicate watercolors (or watercolor-like colors) perfectly convey a sunny day at the beach. “The Flight of the Aeronaut” is scary, and I wish it were longer.
In fact, since Rocketeer Adventures was first published, IDW Publishing has published three original miniseries starring the Rocketeer (one of them featuring Will Eisner’s The Spirit). So here’s an idea for another miniseries, Mr. Dunbier, editor of all things Rocketeer, a follow-up to “The Flight of the Aeronaut.”
As a bonus, Rocketeer Adventures #4 features two pin-ups by artist Ashley Wood. The second of the two, entitled “Heaven Bound,” captures the sense of wonder and hope that the Rocketeer embodies. Long live the Rocketeer.

The Spirit is a comic book character created by cartoonist Will Eisner (who died in January 2005). The Spirit first appeared on June 2, 1940 in what readers called “The Spirit Section.” This was a 16-page, Sunday newspaper supplement or insert that was carried in various newspapers from the 1940s and into the early 1950s. Once known as Detective Denny Colt (believed by some to be dead), The Spirit is a masked vigilante who fights crime in Central City.
Beginning in the early 1980s, Kitchen Sink Press did a complete reprinting of the post-World War II Spirit, which many readers and fans consider to be Will Eisner’s best and most influential work. After the end of The Spirit’s newspaper run, there was very little new Spirit material…
That was until Kitchen Sink Press started publishing The Spirit: New Adventures in 1998. This was an anthology title wherein a number of noted comic book creators and cartoonists chronicled new, post-Eisner Spirit adventures. Over the course of the series run of eight issues, readers got new Spirit tales from Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell, Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons, Paul Pope, and James Vance & Dan Burr, to name a few.
The Spirit: New Adventures #1 features three interconnected tales written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons. In “The Most Important Meal,” Doctor Cobra has his last meal, a solid breakfast, before his execution for double-murder. Cobra shares his breakfast with a young cellmate, whom he regales with a tale of how Denny Colt, a promising young criminologist became The Spirit.
In “Force of Arms,” Homer Creap has complaints about The Spirit and shares them with a young lad. Homer knows the truth about Doctor Cobra, and that tale returns to a time when Homer was the fiancé of one Ellen Dollan, daughter of Police Commissioner Dolan. That was before The Spirit interfered. The final story, “Gossip and Gertrude Granch,” finds widow, Gertrude Granch, entertaining a series of young men who seem to get younger with each new date… or so it seems to her gossipy neighbors.
Among the back matter in The Spirit: New Adventures #1 is a short feature article, “The Many Origins of the Spirit,” written by Catherine Garnier. Until I read it, I did not know that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ trio of tales were a retelling of The Spirit’s origin. In fact, it turns out that The Spirit’s creator, Will Eisner, told his character’s origin in his very first Spirit section (June 2, 1940) and then, retold it twice more. With the debut of The Spirit: New Adventures, Moore and Gibbons were merely telling the origin story again, retelling, re-imagining, and adding to the canon.
Moore and Gibbons, using just a few of the elements they employed so fantastically in Watchmen, offer a few nods to the graphic and stylistic hallmarks that were Will Eisner’s Spirit. As usual, Moore is clever and imaginative, here, more of the former than the latter. Gibbons’ stoic and mercurial surrealism manages to capture the spirit of… The Spirit. This issue’s closing tale, “Gossip and Gertrude Granch,” is pure Eisner and typical Moore. In fact, the story reveals how much Eisner obviously influenced Moore.
I read The Spirit: New Adventures when the series was originally published. Something made me think of it again, so I’m going to go back and re-read it. I strongly recommend to you, dear reader, that you discover this comic book.

"The Sakai Project" Celebrates Character, Benefits Creator
DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES THE SAKAI PROJECT
Artists Celebrate Thirty Years of Usagi Yojimbo
The most amazing artists in the world have come together to celebrate thirty years of Stan Sakai’s marvelous samurai rabbit saga, Usagi Yojimbo, in a new oversized hardcover benefit book: The Sakai Project: Artists Celebrate Thirty Years of “Usagi Yojimbo”.
“It has been an absolute pleasure publishing Stan’s work over the years, and recently collaborating with him directly on 47 Ronin,” said Dark Horse’s president and founder, Mike Richardson. “With the thirtieth anniversary of his most beloved creation, Usagi, and in a time of need for Stan and his family, we are honored to publish this tribute to Stan and his work. We are donating all of the proceeds to Stan and his wife, Sharon. We hope you will join us in honoring one of the comics industry’s shining lights.”
The participating artists bring their own interpretations and their own styles to the subject, making this book a one-of-a-kind treasure.
The Sakai Project is produced in association with the Comic Art Professional Society (CAPS). All proceeds from this book will go to Stan and Sharon Sakai.

"Before Watchmen" - Watchmen Prequel Comic Books Announced
The following was taken from a DC Comics blog post written by David Hyde:
DC ENTERTAINMENT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES “BEFORE WATCHMEN”
This summer, DC Entertainment will publish all-new stories expanding on the acclaimed WATCHMEN universe. As highly anticipated as they are controversial, the seven inter-connected prequel mini-series will build on the foundation of the original WATCHMEN, the bestselling graphic novel of all time. BEFORE WATCHMEN will be the collective banner for all seven titles, from DC Comics.
“It’s our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee. “After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told. We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original.”
Stepping up to the challenge is a group of the comic book industry’s most iconoclastic writers and artists – including Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS), Lee Bermejo (JOKER), Amanda Conner (POWER GIRL), Darwyn Cooke (JUSTICE LEAGUE: NEW FRONTIER), John Higgins (WATCHMEN), Adam Hughes (CATWOMAN), J.G. Jones (FINAL CRISIS), Andy Kubert (FLASHPOINT), Joe Kubert (SGT. ROCK), Jae Lee (BATMAN: JEKYLL AND HYDE), J. Michael Straczynski (SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE) and Len Wein (SWAMP THING).
BEFORE WATCHMEN includes:
RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones
DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes
NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert
OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee
SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner
Each week, a new issue will be released, and will feature a two-page back-up story called CURSE OF THE CRIMSON CORSAIR, written by original series editor Len Wein and with art by original series colorist John Higgins. There will also be a single issue, BEFORE WATCHMEN: EPILOGUE, featuring the work of various writers and artists, and a CRIMSON CORSAIR story by Wein and Higgins.
“The original series of WATCHMEN is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC’s reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire,” said Dave Gibbons, WATCHMEN co-creator and original series artist.
“Comic books are perhaps the largest and longest running form of collaborative fiction,” said DiDio and Lee. “Collaborative storytelling is what keeps these fictional universes current and relevant.”
