Record-Breaking Pace for 2015 Free Comic Book Day Titles

Retailers Place Record-Breaking Order For 2015 Free Comic Book Day Comics

(BALTIMORE, MD) — Comic book specialty retailers worldwide expect significant attendance at this year’s Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) and have pushed their ordering to record breaking levels with more than 5.6 million free comic books to be available the day of the event, Saturday, May 2, 2015. This year’s order for FCBD titles is a 21% increase over 2014’s previous comic order.

The number of participating stores has also increased with 2,340 specialty shops participating in Free Comic Book Day across the US, Canada and internationally, up 8% over last year

“FCBD is the day after the opening of the Marvel’s Avenger's Age of Ultron film, and thousands of comic book shops across North America and around the world will look to share the magic of comic books with their communities,” said FCBD spokesperson Deborah Moreland. “Free Comic Book Day is a wonderful time of year for independently owned and operated comic shops as FCBD gives them an extra push in business as they connect with new customers and get a positive charge forward for the summer months and rest of 2015.

Comic book publishing powerhouses, Dark Horse Comics, DC Entertainment, IDW Publishing, Image Comics and Marvel Comics are among the many sponsors offering 50 special comic book titles for Free Comic Book Day 2015

Free Comic Book Day is designed to appeal to a broad range of tastes, making it a great event for readers of all ages to find a comic they will enjoy as they explore all their local comic book shop has to offer.

I Reads You Review: STRAY BULLETS Free Comics Day Books

I have never attended Free Comic Book Day (FCBD).  This is the annual event in which comic book stores welcome potential new customers by offering free comics that have been specifically created for that day.  Sometimes, I have visited the two comic book stories that I usually frequent close enough to FCBD to pick up some leftover FCBD comic books.

Sometimes, I get a few leftovers from Mile High Comics if I make an order close to FCBD.  That may be how I received Stray Bullets Free Comics Day Book from the 2002 installment of FCBD.  Stray Bullets Free Comics Day Book reprints Stray Bullets #2 (April 1995).

Stray Bullets is an independent American comic book series written and drawn by David Lapham.  The series is published in black and white with color covers by El Capitan Books, an independent publishing firm founded by Lapham and his wife, Maria Lapham.

The first issue of Stray Bullets was published with a March 1995 cover date, the beginning of an irregular publishing schedule through the publication of its 40th in 2005 (November 2005 cover date).  After a hiatus, Stray Bullets recently returned with a 41st issue, a new miniseries (Stray Bullets: The Killers), and an omnibus paperback collecting issues #1 to 40 (Stray Bullets Uber Alles Edition).

Each issue of Stray Bullets features a self-contained story that takes place in a time period ranging from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s.  The stories deal with the criminal and sometimes tragic misadventures of a large cast of characters or, as Lapham writes, “the lost lives of people who are savagely torn apart by events beyond their control.”

Stray Bullets #2 opens in Baltimore, Maryland during the summer of 1977.  At a theatre showing Star Wars, two hood-types, Manny and “Spanish” Scott, wait for Georgie.  What results is shocking, sudden, and brutal.  Witnessing it all is Virginia “Ginny” Applejack, and what Ginny sees changes her.  Her altered attitude or personality fully reveals itself at school, leaving her parents, Tom and Celia Applejack, confused.  But the “stray bullet” that altered Ginny’s life is not through with her.

This is the first time that I have ever read Stray Bullets, but not the first time that I’ve read comics produced by David Lapham.  As much as I’ve enjoyed Lapham’s work, I simply never got around to reading Stray Bullets, although, over the past two decades or so, I have noticed the acclaim that the series has received and how popular it has been with readers.  Now, I am a fan.

I like Stray Bullets’ concept or conceit – the idea that people can be hurt, wounded, and even destroyed by events that have nothing to do with them or were not meant to involve them.  The characters are essentially collateral damage or are the victims of metaphorical stray bullets – bad things not intended for them.

What makes this concept stick is Lapham’s character writing.  He has a knack for using small amounts of dialogue and action to make us care about the characters’ actions, even if we ultimately know very little about them.  The sudden violence is not gratuitous; rather, it is powerful.

I always wondered if Stray Bullets was merely a comic book rip-off of the ensemble crime film, Pulp Fiction.  Instead, Stray Bullets is its own ensemble crime fiction.  So getting Stray Bullets Free Comics Day Book was a good thing.

But that’s not all, folks.  Stray Bullets Free Comics Day Book is a flip book.  Turn this comic book over, and there is another story.  “There Are No Flowers in the Real World” is a comic book short story set in the universe of the film, The Matrix (1999).  Lapham produced the comic for the website, www.whatisthematrix.com.  The story is trademark Lapham, with its string of unintended consequences, random bad luck, and a gut-wrenching/gut-check ending.

The Avengers to Assemble for Free Comic Book Day 2012

National Free Comic Book Day Hits Saturday, May 5th; Over 3.5 million comics to be given away free to comic shop customers

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On May 5th, over two thousand comic book shops across North America and around the world will share the magic of comic books with their communities when they give out over 3.5 million comic books—free of charge—during Free Comic Book Day, which marks its eleventh anniversary this year.

There’s literally a free comic book available for everyone’s taste, including such favorites as The Avengers, Yo Gabba Gabba!, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Transformers…there’s even a comic book on Animal Planet’s The World’s Most Dangerous Animals.

Comic book publishing heavyweights Dark Horse Comics, DC Entertainment, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, and Marvel Comics are among the many sponsors creating special titles for Free Comic Book Day 2012. The free books are designed to appeal to a broad range of tastes, including action-packed super-hero stories featuring Superman and Spider-Man; sci-fi adventures set in the universes of Star Wars and Transformers; classic tales starring Charles Schulz’s Peanuts and Walt Disney’s Donald Duck; and great kids comics for younger fans featuring The Smurfs, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Owly.

Fantagraphics Bookstore Celebrates Free Comic Book Day On May 5 with Classic Collectible Comix!

Don’t miss Free Comic Book Day at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery in Seattle. On Saturday, May 5, the Georgetown shop will be giving away free copies of specially produced comic books by master cartoonists like Carl Barks, Crockett Johnson and, while supplies last, the coveted Unseen Peanuts by Charles M. Celebrating its 10th year in 2012, the annual Free Comic Book Day promotion is a national effort on the part of publishers and retailers to attract new readers to the medium as well as show appreciation to loyal customers.

Seattle-based Fantagraphics Books offers two new titles for Free Comic Book Day this year, appealing to readers of all ages. Donald Duck Family Comics features 34 pages of full color comics by the great Carl Barks. Join Donald, his nephews, Uncle Scrooge and others on amazing adventures in some of the most acclaimed comics ever created. Also in store is Barnaby and Mr. O’Malley by Crockett Johnson. This rollicking strip follows the tyke Barnaby and his mischievous fairy godfather Mr. O’Malley. These wonderful cartoons will soon be collected in a handsome edition by Fantagraphics Books.

Free Comic Book Day comes to Past Present Future

West Palm Beach comic book shop Past Present Future Comics and Games will be celebrating the uniquely American art form of comic books by giving away FREE comics to everyone who shows up at their store on Saturday May 1st. Hundreds of books will be given away and include titles form the top publishers featuring such characters as Iron Man, Superman, Shrek, GI Joe, Buzz Lightyear and many others. Past Present Future will also be having a store wide sale, a costume contest and other surprises that day.

Beyond offering free comics, Past Present Future will be highlighting local talent and smaller Florida based publishers. In attendance that day will be Martin T. Pierro (publisher/writer), Christopher Faulkner (writer) and Aric Huffes (concept artist) from Lake Worth based publisher Cosmic Times, who will also be offering a free comic (“The Making of Souled”) and will be selling their flagship title “Arthur: The Legend Continues”. Coming in from Orlando will be Larry “Spike” Jarrell, Jeramy Hobbs and Zach Bassett who will be representing What the Flux Comics along with Richard Gaines writer/artist of Belfry Boys. Also coming down from Orlando will be representatives from Ka-Blam Digital Printing: Barry Gregory (who not only co-founded Ka-Blam but also has worked with some of the industries top publishers), Jenni Gregory (writer and illustrator of DreamWalker, Abby's Menagerie, Womblees, and Rok's Keep) and Wayne C Spencer (writer and illustrator of Clock Jumpers). Finally rounding out the group will be local publisher Shannon Vokes who has also published a free comic for the event (“SleepRunners: Conflicted”). The intent is to provide people interested in the publishing and art of comics a chance to learn about that side of the industry and will introduce readers to the world of independently produced comics.

Free Comic Book Day, now in its ninth year was conceived as a way to bring new readers into comics and reach out to those people who may not even be aware that there is a local shop in their area. Over the years the demographic of comic readers has changed and now the once kid-oriented industry offers every type genre for every age group and Free Comic Book Day provides potential readers with a chance to discover what this amazing art form/entertainment has to offer.

Past Present Future (or PPF) has been a comic book “destination” store in Palm Beach County since 1982 and for the last 19 years has been owned and operated by local businessman Mark Gallo (who used to work in the shop for the previous owner). Past Present Future sells hundreds of new comics and trade paperbacks (new issues are released every Wednesday) and has thousands of rare and valuable back issues dating from 1933 to 2010. Beyond comics PPF also sells Role Playing Games, Trading Cards and Trading Card Games, Toys, Statues, Action Figures, Manga, Anime, Memorabilia, Collectibles and much more. PPF is located at 1387 N. Jeremy Love at Meltdown Comics on Free Comic Book Day

RED FRAGGLE™ MAKES LIVE APPEARANCE ON FREE COMIC BOOK DAY TO CELEBRATE RELEASE OF ARCHAIA’S ‘MOUSE GUARD/FRAGGLE ROCK’ FLIP BOOK

WRITER SAM HUMPHRIES AND ARTIST JEREMY LOVE ALSO ON HAND TO SIGN COPIES FOR FANS

To celebrate the release of its widely anticipated Free Comic Book Day flip book featuring fan-favorite properties Mouse Guard and Fraggle Rock™, Archaia is excited to announce RED FRAGGLE will make a live appearance on Free Comic Book Day (May 1, 2010) at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles, Calif. to lead a short sing-along of favorite Fraggle Classics, take pictures with fans and sign comic books. Red and world-renowned puppeteer, KAREN PRELL, appear courtesy of The Jim Henson Company, Lionsgate Home Entertainment, Archaia Entertainment and Meltdown Comics.

“This is such a nice treat for fans, and we couldn’t be happier to be able to work with the great folks at The Jim Henson Company, Lionsgate and Meltdown to make this possible,” said Archaia Marketing Manager Mel Caylo. “Karen and Red’s appearance at San Diego Comic-Con was highly anticipated and well attended, so we’re excited for them to come to Los Angeles and share their special magic in celebration of the release of our Free Comic Book Day issue.”

Archaia’s Mouse Guard/Fraggle Rock Free Comic Book Day flip book will feature a brand-new Fraggle Rock story by written by SAM HUMPHRIES (CBGB: The Comic Book) and drawn by Eisner Award-nominated artist JEREMY LOVE (Bayou). Humphries and Love will be on hand at Meltdown Comics with RED FRAGGLE to sign copies of the free comic for fans.

The pair join an already star-studded lineup between the covers of Archaia’s Free Comic Book Day flip book, which also features an original Mouse Guard story by David Petersen, and another never-before-seen Fraggle Rock story written by Nichol Ashworth and drawn by Jake Myler (Undertown).

In addition, Lionsgate Home Entertainment will display a collection of Fraggle Rock DVDs from the original series that started it all, including FRAGGLE ROCK: THE COMPLETE SERIES COLLECTION, which includes the entire award-winning series with over 47 hours of content on 20 discs, as well as FRAGGLE ROCK: THE ANIMATED SERIES, now available for the first time on DVD.

Free Comic Book Day is a single day—the first Saturday in May each year—when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores. Fans at the Meltdown event will be able to sample some of the best talents and stories in the industry, free of charge!

Red Fraggle is one of the five main characters of the “Fraggle Rock” TV show, an award-winning television series launched by The Jim Henson Company in 1983 about an imaginary, colorful and fun world comprised of creatures called Fraggles, Doozers and Gorgs. The show ran for four seasons and became an international sensation. This global fan-favorite brand is as popular today as it was when it premiered more than 25 years ago with a robust consumer products plan featuring apparel, plush toys and even designer jewelry.
