Two Musical Tracks Released from "'The Flash' (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)"

Two Batman-Themed Tracks Released From The Flash (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

“I Am Batman” and “Sounds About Right, Bruce” Now Available From WaterTower Music

Featuring the Music of 2X GRAMMY- and BAFTA-Nominated Composer Benjamin Wallfisch

The Flash (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Full Album Preorders Now Available: Triple LP, Two Color Vinyl and Double CD

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WaterTower Music has announced the release of two highly anticipated tracks of music from Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming film “The Flash,” along with the availability of preorders for Triple LP, Two-Color Vinyl and Double CD versions of the full The Flash (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).

The two Batman-related themes—“I Am Batman” and “Sounds About Right, Bruce”—are the latest music to be released from the upcoming The Flash (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which features the music of celebrated two-time GRAMMY- and BAFTA-nominated composer, Benjamin Wallfisch, (the “IT” films, “Shazam,” “Blade Runner 2049” [with Hans Zimmer]). Two previous tracks from the upcoming album, “Worlds Collide” and “Run,” were made available two weeks ago. All four pieces of music are now available for streaming (Standard and Dolby Atmos / Spatial Audio configurations) and digital purchase, and will be on the soundtrack, scheduled for release the same day as director Andy Muschietti’s “The Flash”—the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film—is set to open in theaters in North America, June 16, 2023.

Fans may find familiarity upon hearing “I Am Batman,” and for good reason. “The Flash” composer Benjamin Wallfisch explains: “As a DC fan for as long as I can remember, I’ve loved Danny Elfman’s ‘The Batman Theme’ from the moment it hit me as a 10 year old back in 1989. It’s of course one of the most iconic themes of all time, and so beloved by fans around the world, it was my job to pull all the stops out and celebrate it in “The Flash” when Keaton is on screen, whilst also finding a way to completely reinvent it for our movie. Keaton returns to this role with more complexity, and a lot more physicality – the music needed to reflect that,” the composer continued. “Andy encouraged me to go all-in with mining all kinds of variations from those iconic six notes and you can hear them both full tilt, but also planted as Easter Eggs. It was so much fun to get to play in that world.

Wallfisch continued: “The music for Ben Affleck’s Batman, “Sounds About Right, Bruce,” has a completely different approach. I wanted to honor the sheer intensity of sound and orchestration that we’ve heard created for his character in recent films, but as his action takes place in the world of The Flash, it needed a ton of propulsion and forward motion, and from that came this new Batman Theme. There’s also a new theme capturing Batman’s backstory (as yet unreleased) that connects both Affleck and Keaton in the movie, heard several times at some key moments in the story.”

ABOUT “THE FLASH”:
Warner Bros. Pictures presents “The Flash,” directed by Andy Muschietti. Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film. Worlds collide when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

“The Flash” ensemble also includes rising star Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdú, Kiersey Clemons, Antje Traue and Michael Keaton. It is produced by Barbara Muschietti and Michael Disco. The screenplay is by Christina Hodson, with a screen story by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein and Joby Harold, based on characters from DC. The executive producers are Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Marianne Jenkins.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Double Dream/a Disco Factory Production of an Andy Muschietti Film, “The Flash” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to open in theaters in North America on June 16, 2023 and internationally beginning 14 June 2023.

ABOUT BENJAMIN WALLFISCH:
Golden Globe, BAFTA, two-time Grammy, Emmy and five-time World Soundtrack Award nominee, composer Benjamin Wallfisch has worked on over 80 feature films, collaborating with directors including Ron Howard, Ted Melfi, Andy Muschietti, Christopher Nolan, David F. Sandberg, Leigh Whannell, Gore Verbinski and Denis Villeneuve. His latest project is Andy Muschietti’s The Flash for DC / Warner Bros.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London—and mentored by Dario Marianelli and Hans Zimmer—Benjamin’s notable projects include It and It Chapter Two, Blade Runner 2049 (with Hans Zimmer), Shazam!, The Invisible Man, Mortal Kombat, Thirteen Lives, A Cure For Wellness, Annabelle: Creation, King Of Thieves, Hidden Figures (with Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer), and music based on Elgar’s Enigma Variations for Dunkirk.

Benjamin has performed live in over 100 concerts worldwide, conducting orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony at venues including the Hollywood Bowl, Sydney Opera House and Royal Festival Hall. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and BAFTA, and is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. In 2019 he founded The Scoring Lab, a state-of-the art scoring production company and Dolby Atmos Certified mix studio in the heart of Santa Monica, California.

ABOUT WATERTOWER MUSIC:

Amazon Announces "Forward" Sci-Fi Short Story Collection

Amazon Publishing Brings Together Bestselling and Award-Winning Authors Blake Crouch, N. K. Jemisin, Veronica Roth, Amor Towles, Paul Tremblay, and Andy Weir for a Sci-Fi Short Story Collection

Coming from Amazon Original Stories in September 2019, Forward will offer readers mind-bending, binge-worthy short stories from some of today’s most acclaimed authors

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon Original Stories, an imprint of Amazon Publishing, announced the forthcoming six-part science-fiction collection, Forward, featuring original short stories from some of today’s most celebrated voices in fiction, including Blake Crouch, N. K. Jemisin, Veronica Roth, Amor Towles, Paul Tremblay, and Andy Weir. Forward will be available for free on September 17th, 2019 to Prime and Kindle Unlimited customers. Readers can download the collection as a Kindle eBook or Audible audiobook.

“We think of our story collections as reading’s answer to podcasts, and are proud to offer our readers—and listeners—fresh ways to fit binge-worthy narratives into their lives.”

Forward explores a central theme: the resounding effects of a pivotal technological moment. While each author started with this same prompt, readers will discover that each story unearths a unique corner of the sci-fi genre, ranging from intimate to epic, grounded to far future, hopeful to harrowing.

Andy Weir (Artemis, The Martian) imagines a high-tech Las Vegas casino heist; Paul Tremblay (The Cabin at the End of the World) immerses readers in a patient’s mysteriously slow healing process; Amor Towles (A Gentleman in Moscow) explores a fertility clinic’s god-like abilities to alter an unborn child’s life path; Veronica Roth (Divergent trilogy) spins a story of finding connection in the face of our world’s certain destruction; N.K. Jemisin (The Broken Earth series) subverts all expectations when an explorer returns to the ravaged Earth his ancestors fled; and Blake Crouch (Dark Matter) follows a video game designer whose character Maxine unexpectedly “wakes up.”

“Each story in the Forward collection stands alone as a singular achievement in science fiction, imagined by a storyteller at the top of their game,” said Mikyla Bruder, Publisher, Amazon Publishing. “In this ambitious collection, these writers deliver a formidable reading experience that will delight their fans and thrill readers new to their work.”

“I find the theme of the Forward collection particularly exciting,” said Veronica Roth, New York Times bestselling author of the Divergent trilogy. “Sci-fi often skews toward wariness of the future, for good reason, but this collection prompted me to tap into the other side of it, into wonder and imagination. It was a welcome challenge!”

“The short story is one of the hardest, most rewarding forms in fiction, and with Amazon Original Stories, we had the tools to gather together the best of the best in sci-fi, fantasy, YA, horror, and historical and bring these groundbreaking stories to a true mass audience,” said Blake Crouch, bestselling author of Dark Matter and the curator of Forward. Crouch’s Wayward Pines trilogy and his novel Good Behavior, both of which were adapted for television, were also published by Amazon Publishing, under the Thomas & Mercer imprint.

“Amazon Original Stories is all about innovating on what storytelling looks like today, and Forward’s all-star cast of beloved authors is helping us do just that,” said Julia Sommerfeld, Editorial Director, Amazon Original Stories. “We think of our story collections as reading’s answer to podcasts, and are proud to offer our readers—and listeners—fresh ways to fit binge-worthy narratives into their lives.”

Launched in 2017, Amazon Original Stories brings unforgettable short fiction and nonfiction to Kindle. Past collections include the Amazon Original Stories and Amazon Studios joint acquisition The Fairer Sex by Michelle Miller, Warmer by Lauren Groff, Jane Smiley, Jess Walter, and more, and Dark Corners, which features Lisa Unger’s Edgar Award-nominated short The Sleep Tight Motel. Each story is available free to Prime members, as well as Kindle Unlimited subscribers, and is available for download for non-subscribers beginning at $1.99.

Amazon Announces Imprint Focusing on English Translations of Children's Books from Around the World

Amazon Publishing Announces Amazon Crossing Kids, an Imprint for Children’s Books in Translation

Amazon Crossing Kids will publish English-language translations of popular and award-winning picture books from across the globe

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ:AMZN)—Amazon Publishing announced the launch of Amazon Crossing Kids, a new imprint for children’s picture books in translation. Building on the work of Amazon Crossing, the largest publisher of translated fiction in the United States, and Amazon Publishing’s Two Lions imprint, a leading children’s book publisher, Amazon Crossing Kids aims to increase the diversity of children’s picture books in translation and encourage young reading from a range of cultural perspectives.

“Publishing and translating children’s books from around the world is an important way to provide young readers with writing, illustration, and storytelling of the most extraordinary range and quality”

Amazon Crossing Kids launches with three picture books and is seeking picture book submissions from all regions of the world. The first titles on the list are:

Spiky, written and illustrated by Ilaria Guarducci and translated by Laura Watkinson (7/1/2019): First published in Italy in 2016, this is the story of a forest creature named Spiky, who spends his days bullying the other forest creatures and sharpening the spikes on his body. But suddenly, when he begins to lose his spikes, he must learn how to befriend the other creatures of the forest and share his softer side, making meaningful relationships along the way.

A Tiger Like Me, written by Michael Engler, illustrated by Joëlle Tourlonias and translated by Laura Watkinson (9/1/2019): First published in Germany in 2016, this sweet story follows a little boy who likes to reimagine his world as that of a tiger’s. This “tiger cub” shares with the reader a day in the life of him and his “tiger” family—waking up in the den, eating in his favorite spot, and how a little tiger feels when he’s awake, hungry, or in the mood for an adventure. With splendor and delight, this little boy encourages the reader to get creative with his or her own imagination.

Along the Tapajós, written and illustrated by Fernando Vilela and translated by Daniel Hahn (10/1/19): First published in Brazil in 2015, this is the story of two children—and their pet tortoise Titi—who live in the region of Jarí, a small community that links the Amazon and Tapajós rivers. Every year, the families living there must relocate when the rainy season starts. When the boy and his sister move with their family, they realize that they have left Titi behind! Eager to rescue him, the pair sneaks back at night on a journey along the river. This story offers a unique look at this way of life.

Two Lions Editorial Director Kelsey Skea will also serve as Editorial Director of Amazon Crossing Kids, working in collaboration with Two Lions Editor Marilyn Brigham and Amazon Crossing Editorial Director Gabriella Page-Fort, to acquire a diverse list of storytellers, illustrators, and translators from across the globe.

“We’re delighted to blend the missions of Amazon Crossing and Two Lions by introducing terrific books from around the globe to readers who are beginning to develop their worldview,” says Mikyla Bruder, Publisher of Amazon Publishing. “Whether a title has a universal theme with regionally-influenced artistry or focuses on an aspect of local culture, our list will encompass a broad range of perspectives, styles, and characters that celebrate what makes us unique as well as what we have in common.”

Award-winning translators, Laura Watkinson and Daniel Hahn, will translate the first titles from Amazon Crossing Kids. Laura Watkinson has translated from Dutch, Italian, and German and is the winner of the Vondel Prize for her Dutch-to-English translation of The Letter for the King as well as a 3-time winner of the Mildred L. Batchelder Award. Daniel Hahn has translated works from Portuguese, Spanish, and French and is the recipient of the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize for his translation of The Book of Chameleons and was shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize for his translation of A General Theory of Oblivion, which won the International Dublin Literary Award.

“Publishing and translating children’s books from around the world is an important way to provide young readers with writing, illustration, and storytelling of the most extraordinary range and quality,” says Daniel Hahn, translator of the forthcoming Amazon Crossing Kids picture book Along the Tapajós. “Any new attempt to broaden our literary horizons, by making it easier for a greater variety of books to find a greater pool of readers, is to be welcomed enthusiastically!”

Both Amazon Crossing and Amazon Crossing Kids accept book proposals from any language for translation into English at translation.amazon.com/submissions.

The Incomes of Authors Has Dropped 42 Percent Since 2009

Authors Guild Survey Shows Drastic 42 Percent Decline in Authors Earnings in Last Decade

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Authors Guild’s 2018 Author Income Survey, the largest survey of writing-related earnings by American authors ever conducted finds incomes falling to historic lows to a median of $6,080 in 2017, down 42 percent from 2009.

“When you impoverish a nation’s authors, you impoverish its readers”

The Authors Guild surveyed its membership and the members of 14 other writers organizations in 2018, receiving detailed responses from 5,067 authors. This included traditionally, hybrid and self-published authors who have commercially published one or more books. When discussing median incomes, the survey looked at both full-time and part-time authors.

The respondents reported a median author income of $6,080, continuing a sharp decline over the last decade: $8,000 in 2014 and $10,500 in 2009 (per the Authors Guild’s 2015 Survey), down again from $12,850 in 2007, as reported in a joint Authors Guild/PEN survey.

Earnings from book income alone fell even more, declining 21 percent to $3,100 in 2017 from $3,900 in 2013 and just over 50 percent from 2009’s median book earnings of $6,250.

The survey showed a shift in book earnings to other writing-related activities, such as speaking engagements, book reviewing or teaching. Including those sources, respondents who identified themselves as full-time book authors still only earned a median income of $20,300, well below the federal poverty line for a family of three or more. To access the full results and data, please click here.

“When you impoverish a nation’s authors, you impoverish its readers,” said James Gleick, the Authors Guild’s president. He noted that more books are being published than ever, but that books of quality often demand time and research that can’t be sustained if an author also needs to teach and lecture to make ends meet.

The drop appears to affect almost all categories of authorship, with writers of literary fiction experiencing the biggest recent decline in book earnings: 43 percent since 2013. This raises serious concerns about the future of American literature—books that not only teach, inspire and elicit empathy in readers, but help define who Americans are and how the U.S. is perceived by the world.

The only exception came among self-published authors, who saw book-related income almost double since 2013. Despite this uptick, self-published income levels remain 58 percent lower than traditionally published authors.

The Causes
Among the factors contributing to the pressure on authorship, the Guild cited the growing dominance of Amazon over the marketplace, forcing publishers to accept narrower margins and passing those losses onto authors through lower advances and royalties, including the extremely low royalties paid on the increasing number of deeply discounted sales and the 25 percent of net ebook royalty.

In addition, many electronic uses, such as classroom course packs, Google Books and Open Library, are now made on a royalty-free basis arguing fair use, whereas royalties traditionally were paid for comparable analog uses.

Increased competition from Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program adds to the equation, as do the massive number of books sold cheaply as new by Amazon resellers right alongside the publisher’s copies, often even claiming the buy box.

Amazon controls approximately 85% of the self-published market and so most self-published authors have no options other than to accept Amazon’s non-negotiable terms.

“Amazon, but also Google, Facebook and every other company getting into the content business, devalue what we produce to lower their costs for content distribution, and then take an unfair share of the profits from what remains for delivering that reduced product. We get that they like to move fast and break things, but it’s no longer in their own interest to break us. If even the most talented of authors can no longer afford to write, to create, who’s going to provide the content?” asked Authors Guild vice president Richard Russo.

What Can Be Done?

  •     Publishers and self-published authors should be able to negotiate collectively with Amazon, Google and Facebook to equalize the bargaining power. Congress should enact an exemption to antitrust law to permit it.
  •     Royalties should be paid by resellers to authors for resellers’ sales of new books.
  •     U.S. should establish a federally funded equivalent of a public lending right to provide authors a benefit from the public use of books; and libraries should be better funded.
  •     Publishers should pay higher royalties on ebooks and deeply discounted books; and they should destroy all bookstore returns to prevent them from getting into the secondary market.

The following writers organizations and publishing platforms participated in the survey: Authors Guild, Romance Writers of America, Society of Children’s Book Writers, Sisters in Crime, International Thriller Writers, Textbook and Academic Authors Association, National Association of Science Writers, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Association for Garden Communicators, Independent Book Publishers Association, PEN American Center, Authors Alliance, Next Big Writer, B&N Press, Authors Registry, IngramSpark, Reedsy and Lulu.

DC Entertainment Announces New Books, New Creators, Broader Focus for the DC Universe

Iconic Super Heroes & Super-Villains Universe is Diversifying To Make Room for More Types of Storytelling, More Fans

June Slate of Titles Includes Long-Awaited Return to DCU of Bryan Hitch, Garth Ennis; Gene Luen Yang & Ming Doyle Join Team of Top Talent

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This summer, DC Entertainment launches a bold new direction for the DC Universe (DCU) that is even more inclusive and accessible to a wider group of readers as the publisher continues to evolve comic storytelling for its next generation of fans. Award-winning, critically acclaimed writers are headlining the June 2015 slate of DC Comics’ new periodicals and graphic novels, including Gene Luen Yang, Bryan Hitch, Garth Ennis, and Ming Doyle.

“Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics – there will be a book for you beginning in June.”

Beginning June 3rd, the DC Comics line of comic books will consist of 24 brand-new series that will begin at issue number one, as well as 25 on-going, bestselling fan favorite series that will continue without a break in the issue numbering. The total number of periodicals in the DCU will be 49, with additional new titles debuting throughout the year.

“This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us,” said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio. “Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics – there will be a book for you beginning in June.”

DC Comics will be keenly focused on going back-to-basics with its legendary characters, like BATMAN, SUPERMAN and WONDER WOMAN, while also reinventing key characters, such as BLACK CANARY, BIZARRO, CYBORG and STARFIRE, with a new contemporary tonality to ensure a diverse offering of titles. Top writers and artists, as well as emerging fresh voices, are on board to help create an expansive lineup of comics that appeals to a broad audience of fans.

Depicting some of these iconic characters in a more contemporary light include National Book Award finalist Gene Luen Yang who will join artist John Romita Jr. in the ongoing adventures of SUPERMAN. Comic superstar artist Bryan Hitch will write and draw new tales of the world’s greatest heroes in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. The pitch perfect team of Garth Ennis and John McCrea returns to DC Comics for a limited series called SECTION EIGHT featuring characters from their popular Hitman comic. VERTIGO creator Ming Doyle will be lending her talents to DC Comics, penning CONSTANTINE: THE HELLBLAZER along with newcomer artist Riley Rossmo.

“More than ever before, DC Comics fans are being exposed to our rich portfolio of characters through multiple sources, including an unprecedented number of highly successful TV shows, video games and upcoming major motion pictures,” said Co-Publisher Jim Lee. “We are looking to extend that experience within publishing to ensure there is a comic book for everyone. For example, fans of the ARROW television show may want more stories about BLACK CANARY. Now they can find modern, fresh takes on the character in the pages of her standalone series both in stores and digitally.”

Breakout star, Brenden Fletcher, co-writer behind the all new, highly successful BATGIRL book will also be writing the new BLACK CANARY series launching in June. Fan favorites Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti will be the creative team on new titles STARFIRE and HARLEY QUINN/POWER GIRL and will continue to helm the perennially bestselling HARLEY QUINN.

“Beyond character and creators, the June slate will showcase different styles and approaches to storytelling as we add offbeat, irreverently funny titles such as BIZARRO, BAT-MITE and PREZ,” said Lee. “Truly there will be something for everybody as we simultaneously celebrate our rich legacy while embracing new voices and concepts.”

A first look at upcoming storylines will be the focus of DC Entertainment’s Free Comic Book Day issue – DC COMICS: DIVERGENCE – available Saturday, May 2, featuring three 8-page previews for the June releases of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s BATMAN, as well as Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok’s launch of the Darkseid War within JUSTICE LEAGUE featuring the biggest villains in the DCU – Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor, and Gene Luen Yang's DC Comics debut with celebrated artist John Romita, Jr on SUPERMAN. More than half-a million free issues of the DC Entertainment sampler will be given away at comic book retailers globally.

“In this new era of storytelling, story will trump continuity as we continue to empower creators to tell the best stories in the industry,” said DiDio.

"Action Comics #1" Sells for $3.2 Million on eBay

The Original Superman Comic, Action Comics #1, Sells for a Record-Breaking $3.2M on eBay

Prominent collectibles dealer Darren Adams sells the finest known copy of Action Comics #1

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--eBay announced a copy of Action Comics #1, with white pages and a grade of 9.0 from the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), sold at auction for $3.2M, making it the most expensive comic in the world. The previous record for the most expensive comic book was set in 2011 when another copy of Action Comics #1, also with a 9.0 grade, but off-white pages sold for $2,161,000. The record-breaking comic was sold by prominent collectibles dealer Darren Adams, owner of Pristine Comics in Federal Way, Wash.

“It's a historic moment that not only speaks to the greatness of Adams' Action Comics #1, but also the overall health of the comic book market”

Widely regarded as the “Holy Grail” of comic books, there are believed to be as few as 50 unrestored original copies of Action Comics #1 still in existence. The comic hit newsstands in 1938 for $.10 and marked Superman’s historic debut, giving birth to the multi-billion dollar global franchise that thrives today.

“I’m proud to have owned the most valuable comic book in the world,” said Darren Adams. “Working with eBay on this auction allowed me to share this rare treasure with their global community and ensure the next owner is just as passionate about its place in history.”

“This was a record auction for eBay as it was the most expensive comic book ever sold on our marketplace. The sale of Action Comics #1 is a prime example of how eBay plays a role in popular culture by connecting shoppers to must-have merchandise, including rare and valuable collectibles,” said Gene Cook, General Manager of Emerging Verticals for eBay Marketplaces. “This was an extraordinary opportunity to bring a comic – one that has captured the attention of passionate collectors and casual fans alike. We will continue to bring more of the world’s most unique and compelling merchandise to our passionate and global community of 149 million buyers, at a wide range of accessible price points.”

"It's a historic moment that not only speaks to the greatness of Adams' Action Comics #1, but also the overall health of the comic book market," said CGC Director of Operations, Harshen Patel. "You see it with collectors enjoying record sales, with the performance of Guardians of the Galaxy at the box office and with the attendance at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con this past week. It's a dynamic time for the comic book industry and its future is very bright."

A portion of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

"Batman #25" Wins November 2013

Batman Tops Comic Book Sales Charts for November

DC Entertainment Continues Successful 2013

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Super Heroes dominated the November comic book sales charts, with DC Entertainment taking four of the month’s top five spots. Landing at #1 and #2 respectively were BATMAN #25 — the continuation of bestselling writer Scott Snyder and superstar artist Greg Capullo’s reimagining of Batman’s early days — and HARLEY QUINN #0, the debut issue of a new comic book series featuring the bombastic Batman femme fatale from co-writers Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti. Also on the list were SUPERMAN UNCHAINED #4 — by Snyder with cinematic art by DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee — and the villain-centric FOREVER EVIL #3 by megastar writer and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and popular artist David Finch, which took the #3 and #4 positions, respectively, according to Diamond Comic Distributors, the largest comic book distributor in the world.

The November numbers continued to cement 2013 as a success for DC Entertainment, a period that saw the company bring the world’s greatest Super Heroes to fans across the globe on all entertainment platforms and top the comic book sales charts eight of the last 12 months.

“We’ve had a banner year at DC Entertainment, where we experienced record-breaking sales, published compelling and captivating stories and continued to bring innovation to the comics industry featuring some of pop culture’s most beloved characters, including Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman,” said Diane Nelson, DC Entertainment President. “We also continued to bring the best and brightest creators into the fold to work on our beloved characters and re-energized the market with a wave of new concepts from our DC Comics and Vertigo imprints.”

The year was also punctuated by an unprecedented array of in-development TV shows - including The CW’s successful drama ARROW, the launch of the entertainment web-series DC ALL ACCESS – which brought fans behind the curtain into the world of DC Entertainment - and the historic return of The Sandman with THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE. And with the close of the year comes the end of a year-long celebration of the world’s first Super Hero, Superman, as the company spent 2013 celebrating the character’s historic 75th anniversary, which was capped off with the announcement of a new theatrical release that will see SUPERMAN and BATMAN together for the first time on the big screen – both of whom will be joined by WONDER WOMAN, making her motion picture debut.

Looking forward, 2014 is positioned to be equally remarkable, kicking off with a Hall of Fame-level collection of talent contributing to January’s DETECTIVE COMICS #27, which celebrates the first appearance of Batman. The issue boasts a jaw-dropping list of contributing talent, including Brad Meltzer and Bryan Hitch, Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, the legendary Frank Miller and more. Batman will also take center-stage as the company returns to weekly comics with BATMAN ETERNAL, focusing on the Dark Knight and his stories, supporting cast of heroes and villains. A second weekly series, THE NEW 52: FUTURES END, will give readers a glimpse at a possible dystopian future for our heroes later this year.

On the book trade side, BATMAN Vol. 3, THE JOKER: Death of the Family, BATMAN: The Killing Joke, BATGIRL Vol. 3, GREEN LANTERN: The End, JUSTICE LEAGUE Vol. 3, BATMAN Vol. 2, EARTH 2: Vol. 2 and Vertigo’s THE SANDMAN OMNIBUS Vol. 2, appeared on The New York Times Hardcover Graphic Book Bestseller list while SMALLVILLE SEASON 11 Vol. 3, BATMAN Vol. 2, and WATCHMEN all landed on The New York Times Paperback Graphic Book Bestseller list.

DC Entertainment’s November sales and promotions leading into Black Friday and Cyber Monday met with great success, with Digital First titles like LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT, BATMAN BEYOND 2.0, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, BATMAN ’66 and SMALLVILLE SEASON 11 taking seven of the top 10 rankings for the month. New Digital First title THE VAMPIRE DIARIES also posted strong numbers for the month and entered the top 20. This rounds out a strong year for DCE’s critically acclaimed Digital First titles, lead by juggernaut INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US, which will return in January 2014.

Leading developer and publisher of digital entertainment, Telltale Games, in cooperation with DC Entertainment, launched “Faith” Episode 1 of the five episode game series, The Wolf Among Us, based on Bill Willingham's award-winning comic book series FABLES.

It’s that time of year when The Usual Gang of Idiots at MAD Magazine compile “The 20 Dumbest Things” issue. This year’s MAD 20 cover, stars Miley Cyrus and Alfred as her unfortunate twerkee! In addition to the former Hannah Montana, this year’s compendium of the year’s dumbest people, events and things features President Obama, Anthony Weiner, Alex Rodriguez, Paula Deen, and many, many more! DC Comics Has September 2013 to Remember

DC Entertainment Dominates Comic Book Sales in September with over 4 Million Comic Books Sold

Spotlight on Pop Culture’s Most Popular Bad Guys Takes Over Comic Book Sales Charts Thanks to Villains Month Publishing Event

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--In September, the best bad guys won – more than four million times.

DC Entertainment decisively topped the comic book sales charts for the month with a jaw-dropping figure of over 4.3 million comic books sold, making the company the #1 comic book publisher for September, according to Diamond Comic Distributors, the largest comic book distributor in the world. This is the third year in a row DC has been the industry’s top publisher in September.

The sales were propelled in large part by the record-breaking success of DC’s “Villains Month” event, which featured 53 comics spotlighting the most impressive collection of rogues ever collected – from Joker to Lex Luthor to Sinestro to Doomsday. Readers were literally pulled into the September stories, with each Villains Month book featuring an innovative “3-D Motion” cover that showcased DC’s Super-Villains jumping off the printed page – from the Joker’s chattering teeth to Two-Face’s flipping coin, the covers created a groundswell of demand that saw many of the comic books sell out shortly after they were racked in stores.

“Great storytelling, strong characters and innovation are things for which we always strive,” said Diane Nelson, DC Entertainment President. “September’s numbers are further proof that we’re on the right track, thanks in large part to the wonderful success of Villains Month, which further proves that in order to have the best heroes, you have to have even better villains.”

The comic book sales news sets the stage for DC’s major presence at next week’s New York Comic-Con. While the talk of the town’s been villains, NYCC brings fans back to the beginning with the continued celebration of the world’s first and greatest Super-Hero, Superman. The Man of Steel’s 75th Anniversary will take center stage with a stunning display featuring eight Superman costumes from the character’s various film and television appearances, including this year’s blockbuster, Man of Steel.

Many of the dangerous villains prominently featured in the September issues of Villains Month also take center stage in a brand new, full-length documentary from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and DC Entertainment. Necessary Evil: Super-Villains of DC Comics – which will be premiering at New York Comic-Con on Thursday at 5pm in room 1A06. The documentary spotlights the malevolent, always charismatic figures from DC Comics’ hallowed rogues gallery, deftly narrated by one of the most recognizable silver screen villains ever, Christopher Lee. Featuring interviews with the famed writers, artists, storytellers and those who have crafted the personalities and profiles of many of the most notorious villains in comic book history, Necessary Evil serves as the perfect follow-up to Villains Month when it’s released on Oct. 25.

Spinning out of the ongoing literary fantasy series THE UNWRITTEN, Vertigo published the original graphic novel THE UNWRITTEN: TOMMY TAYLOR AND THE SHIP THAT SANK TWICE—already garnering rave reviews. This month we’ll see the launch of two new ongoing series; HINTERKIND an expansive dark fantasy adventure series featuring creatures from myth and legend, and COFFIN HILL, written by noted novelist Caitlin Kittredge, starring witch, Eve Coffin. And fans will be lining up on October 30th to get their copy of the highly anticipated publication of THE SANDMAN: OVERTURE, written by Neil Gaiman.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US continued its winning streak among digital sales, taking four out of the top ten spots for the month of September. Villains month titles were also popular with digital readers and FOREVER EVIL #1 ranked third for the month, posting very strong sales for a new title launch. New digital-first title, BATMAN BEYOND 2.0, also posted strong sales with two chapters ranking in the top 20.

On the book trade side, THE FLASH Vol. 2, IN THE DAYS OF THE MOB, BEFORE WATCHMEN: COMEDIAN/RORSCHACH, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS Vol. 2, BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE, THE ANIMAL MAN OMNIBUS and Vertigo’s FABLES: THE DELUXE EDITION BOOK SEVEN and THE SANDMAN OMNIBUS Vol. 1 appeared on The New York Times Hardcover Graphic Book Bestseller list. While THE FLASH Vol. 1, ANIMAL MAN Vol. 3, WATCHMEN all landed on The New York Times Paperback Graphic Book Bestseller list.

October is shaping up to be a big month for MAD Magazine. The humor publication’s issue #524 hits newsstands at the end of the month, featuring a cover that spoofs the popular reality television program, Duck Dynasty. The issue also includes hilarious gags on Man of Steel, fast food, twerking, and much more! DC Comics Rocks July Comic Book Sales Charts

Superman & Batman Team-up to Top Comic Book Sales Charts

DC Entertainment Dominates July with Impressive Results Coming out of Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Super Hero comic book sales soared in July with SUPERMAN: UNCHAINED #2 and BATMAN #22 continuing their reign atop the comic book sales charts at the #1 and #2 positions, respectively, moving DC Entertainment up the ranks as the month’s top publisher in dollars, according to Diamond Comic Distributors, the largest comic book distributor in the world. Additionally, JUSTICE LEAGUE #22 – the first part of “Trinity War,” a crossover that sees the three Justice League teams at odds – took the #4 spot.

The sales figures closed out a historic July for DC Entertainment (DCE), as the company rolled on after a momentous Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013. The show kicked off with the unveiling of a customized JUSTICE LEAGUE-inspired KIA Sorento—the final car in a series of 8 featuring each member of the Justice League—and launched a charity auction on eBay benefitting the We Can Be Heroes giving campaign. To date, the campaign has raised nearly $2.4 million.

Thousands of fans swarmed DCE’s massive booth, an all-star collection of Superman costumes from the character’s various film and TV incarnations, leading up to a star-studded celebration of Superman’s 75th Anniversary, which featured a special guest star: an original issue of ACTION COMICS #1 – the comic book that started it all and made Comic-Con International: San Diego possible. Warner Bros. Interactive (WBIE) also had a great Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013, offering fans hands-on playable stations featuring upcoming games Infinite Crisis, Scribblenauts Unmasked and Batman: Arkham Origins.

The news that was the talk of the town and beyond came courtesy of Man of Steel director Zack Snyder, who made a surprise appearance in Hall H to confirm that the next DC Super Hero movie is in pre-production, slated for a Summer 2015 release. Snyder also teased a potential storyline featuring two of DC Comics’ most iconic Super Heroes – Superman and Batman – together on the big screen for the first time!

“Superman and Batman are icons, pure and simple. Their popularity stretches across all media,” said Diane Nelson, DC Entertainment President. “Having them paired together on the big screen is something fans are extremely excited about, and seeing both heroes – and their team, the Justice League – topping the comic book sales charts is further proof of that.”

“Batman: Zero Year,” re-telling the origin of the Dark Knight in DC Comics – The New 52, continues to be a dominant force in terms of sales and critical acclaim, with the work of writer Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo raking in the accolades. As if that weren’t enough, Grant Morrison’s own, epic Bat-saga came to a close in July with the touching, shocking and always engaging BATMAN INC. #13, marking an end to the beloved seven-year tale with a major cliffhanger and press coverage including USA Today and The New York Post.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #22, the first part of the summer “Trinity War” crossover that pits the three Justice League teams against each other, pairs A-list writers Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire with the best artists in comics, including Ivan Reis, Doug Mahnke and Mikel Janin. The story leads into this September’s FOREVER EVIL #1, by Johns and superstar artist David Finch – the first line-wide event in the history of DC Comics – The New 52. For a primer on “Trinity War” and FOREVER EVIL, fans can check out a special “Justice League 101” video – narrated by Johns himself – that gives fans a crash course on all things Justice League.

Over at Vertigo, issues #1 and #2 of THE WAKE by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy have sold out and gone back to press along with other key new launches like TRILLIUM and COLLIDER, making for an impressive 2013 for the genre-defying imprint. Writer/artist Jeff Lemire’s sci-fi love story TRILLIUM weaves together the lives of two souls separated by thousands of years and hundreds of millions of miles in a phenomenal, oversized flip book. In Fabletown, bestselling author Lauren Beukes – whose new novel The Shining Girls has been tabbed as a key summer read – hit the top 10 in graphic novel sales with FAIREST Vol 2: THE HIDDEN KINGDOM, revealing the story of Rapunzel in Japan.

“The second half of 2013 is going to be an exciting, innovative and important few months for us,” said Nelson. “From Neil Gaiman’s return to the world of Sandman, the fantastic 3-D Motion covers adorning our Villains Month titles and the epic crossover that is FOREVER EVIL, we hope fans are ready for a fun ride.”

July digital sales saw continued dominance of Digital First title INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US (ranking #1-4) while newly launched Digital First title BATMAN ’66 also scored strong sales during its first month of release, with three digital chapters ranking in the top 20 for the month (ranking #6, 13 and 17) . As the Trinity War event heats up several related Same Day Digital titles were popular in July including JUSTICE LEAGUE #22 (ranked #5), JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #6 (ranked #8), JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #22 (ranked #11) and TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA #1 (ranked #18). On the eBook front, following the dramatic Comic-Con film announcement there was a huge jump in month-over-month sales of Frank Miller’s BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS.

Fans visiting the DC Entertainment websites before Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013 were dazzled by newly-designed video sections, which featured an across-the-board switch to YouTube as the online video player for the site. The redesign and player switch helped bump up traffic for the site’s regular “Con Away From Con” coverage by 67 percent over the prior year.

DC Collectibles also had a great showing in San Diego with its “Con Exclusive” products including new “Super Best Friends Forever” figures and a Man of Steel variant statue posting strong sales.

On the book trade side, SOLO: THE DELUXE EDITION, BATMAN Vol. 2, BATMAN AND ROBIN Vol. 2, SUPERMAN: THE GOLDEN AGE Omnibus Vol. 1, BEFORE WATCHMEN: MINUTEMEN/SILK SPECTRE, BEFORE WATCHMEN: OZYMANDIAS/CRIMSON CORSAIR, SUPERMAN Vol. 2 appeared on The New York Times Hardcover Graphic Book Bestseller list while RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS Vol. 2, AQUAMAN Vol. 2, Vertigo’s SWEET TOOTH Vol. 6 all landed on The New York Times Paperback Graphic Book Bestseller list.

MAD Magazine had a very strong presence at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2013, where Editor John Ficarra highlighted the upcoming release of INSIDE MAD - the follow-up to last year's #1 New York Times bestseller, TOTALLY MAD. The week after the convention, MAD released issue #522 while also preparing for the August release of issue #523, which will feature Spy vs Spy depicted as major figures on the cover for the first time. Meanwhile, THE IDIOTICAL blog continued their daily spoofs, including "A Public Service Announcement to the New Royal Parents."
