BLURB REVIEW:
Cable #1 (Marvel Comics – July 2017) by James Robinson and Carlos Pacheco with Rafael Fonteriz and Jesus Aburtov
Cable has been one Marvel Comics' most popular X-Men/mutant characters since his debut in New Mutants #87 back in late 1989/early 1990. The character has been the star or co-star of a number of ongoing comic book series and miniseries. I find him to be one of the least interesting of Marvel's merry mutants. When I have purchased a Cable comic book, it was because of the art.
I think I was attracted to his new Cable #1 because of the cover, which is drawn by Dale Keown. After nearly a quarter century, I still find Keown's unique drawing style to be eye candy. However, I knew from the opening page that this comic book was going to be awful, and it is. Whatever happened to James Robinson? He was once one of the shining lights of comic book scribes, so much so that Hollywood came a-callin' for his writing skills. Now, he cranks out listless scripts for Marvel secondary titles that are more like dumpster comics than publications from a major company.
Cable is part of Marvel's “ResurrXion” initiative to revive its X-Men line. Half the “ResurrXion” titles suck, and Cable sucks ass.

BLURB REVIEW:
Iceman #1 (Marvel Comics – August 2017) by Sina Grace and Alessandro Vitti with Rachelle Rosenberg
Iceman (Robert Louis Drake, also known as “Bobby Drake”) is one of the original X-Men, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby in 1963 for the comic book, X-Men. Iceman has been the star of two four-issue miniseries (one published in 1984-85 and another in 2001-02). He finally gets his own ongoing series with the simply titled Iceman, written by Sina Grace and drawn by Alessandro Vitti.
Judging by the first issue, this series will focus quite a bit on Bobby Drake's angst-filled family and romantic life. I'm not interested. I find Alessandro Vitti's art to be unattractive, another reason I will likely avoid future issues of this comic book. This new comic book arrives as part of “ResurrXion,” Marvel's initiative to reinvigorate its X-Men line of comic books. The problem, so far, is that half of these new titles are mediocre, and Iceman is one of them.

I Reads You Review: CONAN RED SONJA #1
CONAN RED SONJA #1 (OF 4)
DARK HORSE COMICS/DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT – @DarkHorseComics and @dynamitecomics
WRITER: Gail Simone and Jim Zub
ARTIST: Dan Panosian
COLORS: Dave Stewart
LETTERS: Richard Starkings & Comicraft
COVER: Dan Panosian
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (January 2015)
Part 1 of 4: The Age of Innocence
Conan the Cimmerian (also Conan the Barbarian) was born in the pulp fiction of Robert E. Howard, first appearing in magazine, Weird Tales (1932). Marvel Comics brought Conan to comic books in 1970, with the long running series, Conan the Barbarian. In Conan the Barbarian #23 (cover dated February 1973), writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith created a high fantasy sword and sorcery heroine. She was named Red Sonja and was loosely based on “Red Sonya of Rogatino,” a female character that appeared in the 1934 short story, “The Shadow of the Vulture,” written by Robert E. Howard.
Conan and Red Sonja are reunited in comic books again in Dark Horse Comics' new four-issue miniseries, Conan Red Sonja. This series is written by Gail Simone and Jim Zub, drawn by Dan Panosian, colored by Dave Stewart, and lettered by Richard Starkings & Comicraft.
Conan Red Sonja #1 (“The Age of Innocence”) opens when Manus Drath arrives on the Barachan Isles, off the coast of Zingara. He has brought with him a container of mysterious seeds for an unwary farmer to plant. Meanwhile, in the city of Enshophur, in the country of Koth, Conan and Red Sonja find themselves after the same prize. Their quest will take each into royal chambers, where they will learn that not everything is what it is supposed to be.
I have not read very many comic books written by Gail Simone, but what I have read, I have enjoyed. I only discovered the work of writer Jim Zub within the last two years and have found great pleasure in his recently launched creator-owned series, Wayward (Image Comics). Thus, I am not surprised that the Simone-Zub union would create such a hugely enjoyable series as Conan Red Sonja.
Conan Red Sonja captures the spirit of a Conan adventure as well as any Conan comic book ever has. It is brawny and pulpy and has a humorous streak that cuts across most of the first issue. Red Sonja's sly wit is the perfect foil for Conan's murderous sense of humor. What makes their union so special is the reality that these two cannot trust each other long enough for them to take on a long campaign together. It will be interesting to see how this duo comes together at just the right time to take on the darkness that is ahead of them because of their actions in this first issue.
Dan Panosian's art tells a lean and mean story, and Panosian captures how quickly our barbarian heroes can change fate with the sharp edge of their swords. Panosian sets the mood; this first issue is just the beginning – the introduction and set-up. The real pain is yet to come, and the art portends in all the right places while offering up the Hyborian version of a heist story.
Conan Red Sonja #1 makes me want to keep reading. I hope that the rest of this series lives up to my high expectations.

Review: RED SONJA Volume 2 #1
RED SONJA, VOL. 2 #1
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT – @dynamitecomics
WRITER: Gail Simone – @GailSimone
ARTIST: Walter Geovani
COLORS: Adriano Lucas
LETTERS: Simon Bowland
COVER: Nicola Scott
VARIANT COVERS: Amanda Conner, Fiona Staples, Jenny Frison, Colleen Doran; Stephanie Buscema (subscription cover)
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S.
Rated T+
Based on the character created Robert E. Howard and Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith
For Conan the Barbarian #23 (cover dated February 1973), writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith created a high fantasy sword and sorcery heroine. She was named Red Sonja and was loosely based on “Red Sonya of Rogatino,” a female character that appeared in the short story, “The Shadow of the Vulture,” written by Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Cimmerian.
Red Sonja has appeared in comic books for forty years, with the character spending the last decade at Dynamite Entertainment. Dynamite Entertainment is re-launching their ongoing Red Sonja comic book series with Gail Simone as writer and Walter Geovani as artist on a new title, Red Sonja, Volume 2.
Red Sonja, Volume 2 #1 opens with a brief look into Red Sonja’s past. Three years later, she is sleeping off a drunk, which is interrupted by thieves and by Nias and Ayla – her self-appointed bodyguards. Now, a former benefactor (so to speak), King Dimath needs Sonja’s help. Sonja agrees, and her reward is a ghost from her past.
In interviews she has given for Red Sonja, Volume 2, writer Gail Simone has spoken of taking the character in a direction that is different from past interpretations. Simone is one of the few female writers who have broken into the white boys’ club that is comic book writing for Marvel and DC Comics in a way that has allowed her to be prolific and influential. And she is not really like her male colleagues.
Simone’s Red Sonja is fiery and aggressive, not icy and reserved – as the character has been in the past. She is not really an alpha female. It’s like this: because it is a penis or royal penis does not mean Sonja has to submit or bow to it. Simone’s Red Sonja is truly liberated from having her life defined by men being in control. Simone’s presentation of the character makes this book worth a look, because the plot is merely standard sword and sorcery material.
Fans of Red Sonja and of Gail Simone will want to try Red Sonja, Volume 2.

Albert Avilla Reviews: Batgirl #13
Batgirl # 13
DC Comics
Reviewed by Albert Avilla
Writer: Gail Simone
Pencils/Inks: Ed Benes
A Blade of Memory (Spoilers!)
The story kicks off with our heroine down and out for the count. She's been stabbed by the vile Nightfall. Batgirl brings herself back from the brink to stop Nightfall.
During a break in the action, we get Nightfall's origin. We learn that she is the daughter of a corrupt businessman. After her family is brutally murdered by her boyfriend, Trevor, Charise Carnes takes the blame and allows herself to be sent to Arkham to learn her craft from the inmates. What degree program is that? After that fine education, she goes on the noble path of fixing Gotham City by torturing and murdering criminals.
Once Batgirl lets Nightfall know that she's leaving with the criminal that Nightfall has been torturing and Trevor, the fight renews. Just as Batgirl reaches her limit, she gets help from the thug she is trying to save and is able to defeat Nightfall. Then, Batwoman comes in to save Batgirl. Barbra's mother is being threatened by thugs in clown masks. A group of super-villains are being gathered to kill Batgirl.
DC has a creative team on Batgirl that has the ability to make the book A-list. The potential for greatness is awesome. Upcoming stories seem to be interesting. Nightfall is a good archenemy for Batgirl, as their different philosophies clash with each other. Nightfall has challenged Batgirl by threatening to control the cyberworld, making Batgirl want to rise to the challenge. Batgirl is better when she is part of the action, but it would benefit her to develop her skills as a computer hacker. With covert and overt enemies to face, Batgirl has a challenging future to face.
I give props to Benes; he hasn't drawn a story where the art didn't accentuate the story. This is an all-around, good-looking book. He was even able to keep Batwoman in her own unique look.
I rate Batgirl # 13 Buy Your Own Copy. #2 (of 5) on the Al-O-Meter Ranking

The New 52 Review: BATGIRL #1
BATGIRL #1
DC COMICS
WRITER: Gail Simone
PENCILS: Ardian Syaf
INKS: Vicente Cifuentes
COLORS: Ulises Arreola
LETTERS: Dave Sharpe
COVER: Adam Hughes
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S.
There have been several incarnations of the character Batgirl, but the best known and most popular is Barbara Gordon as Batgirl. Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, first appeared in 1966, introduced in Detective Comics #359 (entitled “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl”), in a story written by Gardner Fox and drawn by Carmine Infantino.
Batgirl #1 (“Shattered”) returns Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, but after being paralyzed and in a wheelchair for a time, Barbara is struggling to adjust to being on her feet again. How tough? She discovers that physically she is just a touch slow when she faces the Brisby Killers. It is the villain Mirror, however, who will be her toughest challenge.
I have not read much by writer Gail Simone, but what I have read I’ve enjoyed. Her lively characters are easy to like, and her sparkling dialogue makes even the slow scenes perk up. The most surprising thing that Simone does here is how much she delves into Barbara Gordon’s struggle to be Batgirl-walking-again.
Also, the pencil art by Ardian Syaf is so pretty, with its details and textures brought out by intricate line work, which the inks by Vicente Cifuentes lovingly highlight. Syaf’s storytelling is solidly built on his drawing skills, and he and Simone make an excellent creative team. I’m going to keep reading, and you should to because I’m highly recommending Batgirl.
