“Killer Instinct” Part One
Neena Thurman a.k.a. Domino is a Marvel Comics character. The character was created by artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza. A version of Domino first appeared in New Mutants #98 (cover dated: February 1991); then, the “real” version of the character first appeared in X-Force #8 (cover dated: March 1992). Domino is a mutant best known for her association with the team, X-Force.
Although Domino has been the title character in two miniseries, the character is finally the star of her own ongoing comic book series. Entitled Domino, it is written by Gail Simone; drawn by David Baldéon; colored by Jesus Aburtov; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.
Domino #1 finds Domino and “Crazy” Inez Temple a.k.a. “Outlaw” in the Pacific Northwest. They are supposedly here because they have been hired to take care of some mobsters, but this is really a setup for an attack on them. And it's Neena Thurman's birthday...
I am a fan of Gail Simone, and I am currently enjoying her Image Comics series, Crosswind, and her current miniseries for Dynamite Entertainment, Red Sonja / Tarzan, both of which had excellent first issues. Domino #1 is a mediocre first issue.
Simone has publicly stated that many comic books suffer from poor character development. The problem with Domino #1 is that its title character is not much of a character. Domino is at best a supporting character, but Marvel Comics has spent much of the last four decades publishing miniseries and regular series starring just about any character that shows any measurable popularity with fans. So Domino #1 stars a character who, after more than a quarter century, is not much more than the sketch that first appeared in Rob Liefeld's sketchbook. And Gail Simone, who is excellent at giving comic book characters character, may not be able to change that.
As for the graphics team, David Baldéon has been a rising star; Domino #1 is air turbulence for him, a step back from his excellent, hot wire art on the recent Spirits of Vengeance miniseries. For colorist Jesus Aburtov and letterer Clayton Cowles, Domino #1 is an average output. “Serviceable” is the word to describe Domino #1. I do not hold out hope that the series will get better.

BLURB REVIEW:
Generation X #1 (Marvel Comics – July 2017) by Christina Strain and Amilcar Pinna with Felipe Sobreiro
Why is Marvel Comics reviving the mid-1990s X-Men title, Generation X (1994 to 2001; 75 issues)? Well, it's a title/trademark they own, and since they are in the middle of the latest X-Men reboot/revival (called “ResurrXion”), and they need new X-titles, why not?
This new series focuses on a “newer” generation of mutants, with Jubilee being the only original member to belong to this new iteration. I read the original Generation X for a number of years, mainly because of Chris Bachalo's incredible detailed and textured art. Current series artist Amilcar Pinna does nothing for me, and writer Christina Strain's script does not inspire me to keep reading. I am not interested in the characters, and the name, term, or phrase, “Generation X,” simply does not have the power or draw it once did.

BLURB REVIEW:
Reborn #6 (Image Comics – June 2017) by Mark Millar and Greg Capullo with Jonathan Glapion
Mark Millar's latest comic book-as-Hollywood pitch, Reborn, ends with a sixth issue. Meh. It has it moments, some of them quite evocative, but Reborn seems like something in which the best is yet to come, or at least the actual story is yet to come. Apparently, there are plans for several more volumes of Reborn. I liked Greg Capullo's imaginative character and creature designs and sets; in fact, there are three pages of Capullo's concept sketches at the end of this issue.
Also, is it just me or does much of Reborn seem to be inspired by Ridley Scott's ambitious, but troubled fantasy film, Legend (1985)?

BLURB REVIEW:
Jean Grey #1 (Marvel Comics – July 2017) by Dennis Hopeless and Victor Ibanez with Jay David Ramos
I think that this is the first solo Jean Grey comic book title in the 50+ years of X-Men comic books. Maybe, Marvel had to take its time to get it right, because this Jean Grey comic book is right. Writer Dennis Hopeless makes Jean Grey's powers seem fun with an imaginative display of tossing villains and juggling objects. I like Victor Ibanez's interior art, but not as much as I like that of series cover artist, David Yardin. Still, there is something fresh and sparkling about Ibánez's art, which is enhanced by Jay David Ramos' shimmering colors. I can't wait to read more, especially because of the teaser the last page offers.

Rated T+
X-Men created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
Uncanny X-Men has been the flagship X-Men comic book for most of the past five decades, but it recently came to an end (for now?) with the publication of Uncanny X-Men #600. The status changes as a result of the All-New, All-Different Marvel re-branding of Marvel Comics. Now, the flagship X-Men title is Extraordinary X-Men.
This new series is written by Jeff Lemire; drawn by Humberto Ramos (pencils) and Victor Olazaba (inks); colored by Edgar Delgado; and lettered by Joe Caramagna. The series finds the X-Men fighting to escape the threat of the Terrigen Mists which gives Inhumans their powers, but harms mutants.
Extraordinary X-Men #1 opens with Storm struggling with the weight of the task she finds before her. She must fight to save mutantkind, which may be facing extinction because of the mass release of the Terrigen Mists. Now, with her lieutenants, Iceman and Magik, at her side, Storm must gather a new team of X-Men to help the mutants now living in a place called “X-Haven.” Not everyone, however, wants to join Storm's mission, even if they believe in it.
Upon first seeing a teaser about Extraordinary X-Men, I was dismissive of it. Now, I cannot wait to read the second issue. Marvel has found a way to make the X-Men interesting – by marking them destruction. Their numbers are shrinking, and they may not be able to reproduce, which means extinction. Having a streamlined X-team will give writer Jeff Lemire a chance to build the characters into this new paradigm of peril. Lemire will also be able to tell fresh stories using classic or familiar personalities, but from a different point of setting or perspective. Lemire's take on Storm reminds me of the boss-lady of Chris Claremont's run on Uncanny X-Men, and for me, that is a good thing.
In the meantime, Humberto Ramos' run as penciller on the 2014 relaunch of The Amazing Spider-Man reinvigorated my interest in Ramos (and Spider-Man, for that matter). For a few years in the 1990s, Ramos was one of my favorite comic book artists. Hey, in a way, these are the same old X-Men, but Ramos, both in terms of drawing style and graphical storytelling, makes everything seem fresh and new. I think the possibilities are endless for Extraordinary X-Men, even if corporate demands mean the X-Men comic books won't stray too far from the familiar.
Still, I am excited, so I will recommend Extraordinary X-Men #1.

Rated “T”
Spider-Man created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko
There have been at least three prior series to start with the title, The Amazing Spider-Man, to say nothing of all the comics published as Spider-Man #1. In fact, there was The Amazing Spider-Man #1 launched by writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos just last year.
With the arrival of the “All-New All-Different Marvel,” The Amazing Spider-Man starts over, again with writer Dan Slott; artists Giuseppe Camuncoli (pencils) and Cam Smith (inks); colorist Marte Gracia; letterer Joe Caramagna; and cover artist Alex Ross.
The Amazing Spider-Man #1 opens in Shanghia. Why? Because Spider-Man has gone global, that's why. Spider-Man and Mockingbird are trying to receive the secure servers of Parker Industries (P.I.), which contain critical data concerning P.I.'s “Webware” Internet app/browser/provider. An adversarial entity calling “The Zodiac” is the culprit, but another, far more dangerous villain is lurking in the shadows.
I totally dug The Amazing Spider-Man 2014, mainly when Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos were the creative team. Yes, it is only one issue, but I am not as excited by The Amazing Spider-Man 2015. Still, the last page will make sure I come back, and I must say that, in general, I find Dan Slott to be one of the best Spider-Man comic book writers that I have had the pleasure of reading.

review: DANGER GIRL: Renegade #1
IDW PUBLISHING – @IDWPublishing
[This review was originally published on Patreon.]
WRITER: Andy Hartnell
ARTIST: Stephen Molnar
COLORS: John Rauch
LETTERS: Neil Uyetake
EDITOR: Scott Dunbier
COVER: J. Scott Campbell with Laura Martin
VARIANT COVERS: J. Scott Campbell; Jamie Tyndall with Stacy Raven; Juan N. Cabal with Jordi Escuin; Casey Heying with Admira Wijaya; Casey Heying
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (September 2015)
Created by J. Scott Campbell, Danger Girl was one of the three inaugural comic book series that launched Cliffhanger, an imprint of the former Image Comics “house,” Wildstorm Studios. Danger Girl #1 (cover dated: March 1998) introduced a group of female secret agents whose adventures were a mixture of Indiana Jones and James Bond. In fact, Danger Girl’s young female stars were like Bond Girls, except that the girls were the ones getting to be James Bond in action. Danger Girl focused on one girl in particular, Abbey Chase.
Scott Dunbier, the Wildstorm editor of the original series, has guided Danger Girl back to life in recent years via a series of miniseries published by IDW Publishing. The latest mini is Danger Girl: Renegade, which is written by Andy Hartnell, drawn by Stephen Molnar, colored by John Rauch, and lettered by Neil Uyetake, with cover art by J. Scott Campbell.
Danger Girl: Renegade #1 opens with a prologue, set in Cairo, Egypt, 12 years before the main story. Thirteen-year-old Abbey Chase is set upon by three men, but she proves more than capable of escaping them and leaving them in danger. However, Abbey is a target because of her father, and men won't stop trying to kidnap her in order to use her as leverage against him.
Danger Girl: Renegade is apparently a miniseries that will reveal how Abbey Chase became who she is on the way to becoming a member of the super-secret spy organization known as “Danger.” Danger Girl, since its beginning, has been lighthearted, superfluous entertainment, but it has been surprisingly good at being, lighthearted, superfluous entertainment. Danger Girl remains Indiana Jones meets James Bond, more Roger Moore, even if the creators might have Sean Connery in mind. As a comic book, Danger Girl is a narrative in which the graphical storytelling is dressed in pin-up illustration and good girl art.
Renegade does not change that the formula, and, once again, the result is a fun comic book. I don't know what else Andy Hartnell has written in his time as a comic book writer, but I know that Harley Quinn and a few other “ladies of DC Comics” could use his deft comic touch. Also, Renegade series artist Stephen Molnar makes sure readers don't miss J. Scott Campbell... too much.
So, dear readers, does this review make you think that I like Danger Girl: Renegade and that I will read more? Well, I hope many of you will give Danger Girl: Renegade a try so that we can get more Danger Girl.

Princess Leia: Part 1
The third title to come out of Marvel Comics' return to publishing Star Wars comic books is Princess Leia. A five-issue miniseries, Princess Leia is written by Mark Waid, pencilled by Terry Dodson, inked by Rachel Dodson, colored by Jordie Bellaire, and lettered by Joe Caramagna.
Princess Leia #1 (“Part 1”) opens during what is the final scene in the original Star Wars (1977), the awarding of medals to Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. The Rebel Alliance has just scored a major victor at the Battle of Yavin by destroying the evil Galactic Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star, but the rebels have little time to celebrate or to even mourn their dead.
Princess Leia Organa is ready to move on to the next stage in the battle against the Empire, so she is surprised to discover that her new role is to be a protected asset. A contentious encounter with Evaan, a pilot who is also from Leia's now-destroyed home world of Alderaan, spurs Leia into action with a new mission. Her fellow rebels, however, may not like Leia's new mission.
I must admit for the third time that I am pleasantly surprised by Marvel's new Star Wars comics. Marvel's flagship Star Wars and the recently launched Darth Vader comic book surprised me by being more enjoyable than I expected, especially Darth Vader. When writer Mark Waid is good, he is usually really good, and he seems ready to let Leia show herself in full bloom – without having to share the narrative with either Luke or Han. The original Star Wars films only hinted at Leia's full capabilities as a rebel leader, as a warrior, as a woman, and as a bad-ass. It looks like Waid is going to try to tap into every bit of her potential.
As for the art: many readers of Star Wars comic books have probably wanted an Adam Hughes-drawn Star Wars comic book since the first time we ever saw Hughes draw a Star Wars illustration. Terry Dodson has a drawing style that is clearly influenced by Hughes, so we finally have a Adam Hughes Star Wars comic book in Princess Leia, or as close as we are likely every going to get. Some of Dodson's composition in this first issue is a bit awkward, but Terry and Rachel Dodson have captured the spirit of classic Star Wars. So I have decided to follow where Waid and the Dodsons take me on this galactic adventure.

Book 1: Vader
Marvel Comics' new line of Star Wars comic books yields a second series. Entitled Darth Vader, it is written by Keiron Gillen, drawn by Salvador Larroca, colored by Edgar Delgado, and lettered by Joe Caramagna. Of course, this series focuses on the signature Star Wars villain, Darth Vader.
It might seem odd to that Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith, is so popular. Throughout six Star Wars films, Vader, either as himself or as his original identity, Anakin Skywalker, has been portrayed as a killer, a mass murderer, a child killer, a war criminal, a torturer, a traitor, a liar, and as the lap dog of Emperor of the evil Galactic Empire. While people would generally find anyone of the above descriptions repugnant, to say nothing of possessing more than one, Darth Vader is a fictional character is an escapist fantasy. Instead of being repugnant, Vader is alluring
It is granted that countless people around the world take the Star Wars narrative seriously. While Darth Vader may be like Adolf Hitler, he is not in actuality like Hitler. So fans can love the fictional Vader, while hating even a fictional depiction of Hitler. Got it? We don't have to take Vader so seriously in order to find him a most delicious bad guy.
Darth Vader #1 (Book 1: Vader) opens after the events that took place on Cymoon (as seen in Marvel's recently launched Star Wars comic book series). Vader is on the planet Tatooine to negotiate with Outer Rim crime lord, Jabba the Hutt. The story then takes readers to the period shortly before Vader arrived on Tatooine.
We learn that the Emperor is exceedingly displeased at the Rebel Alliance's destruction of the Death Star and also with the Rebel attack on Cymoon. The Emperor both blames Vader and tasks him with repairing the damage done to “his” empire by the recent setbacks. Vader realizes that his position is now precarious, so how will he respond?
As I started reading Darth Vader #1, I did not expect much – I have to admit. The art is good, but it is by Salvador Larroca, who is always good and has been for over a decade. Just after the halfway point in this first issue, I started to understand that Darth Vader the comic book looks like it is going to be a character drama about and character study of Vader. He will be neither the henchman/contagonist of the original Star Wars film trilogy nor the shallow and petulant youth of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
Keiron Gillen will give Vader not only motivation, but also personality, including a sense of pride and an ability to be pricked and wounded emotionally and psychologically. Vader will have to respond, to defend, and to protect himself in sometimes imaginative and sometimes foolish ways. Larroca will bring that to life in vivid, potent, and eye-catching storytelling.
Could Darth Vader be the better Star Wars ongoing series?

Book 1: Skywalker Strikes
In 1977, Marvel Comics published a comic book adaptation of the movie, Star Wars, over the course of six issues. Because of the sales success of that adaptation, Marvel continued publishing this comic book, also entitled Star Wars, assigning a number of writers and artists to fashion new adventures featuring the cast of the Oscar-winning Star Wars, which broke box office records.
During its run of 107 issues and 3 annuals, Star Wars the comic book series also adapted the 1980 film, The Empire Strikes Back (over the course of six issues). The series created new stories to continue the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader, and new characters like Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett. A comic book adaptation of Return of the Jedi was published in a separate four-issue miniseries. Marvel also published two other Star Wars comic books, a fourteen-issue series, Ewoks, and an eight-issue series, Droids. In 1986, Marvel stopped producing new Star Wars comic books.
From 1991 to 2014, Dark Horse Comics held the license to publish Star Wars comic books. During that time, Dark Horse published hundreds of individual Star Wars comic books, paperbacks, and hardcover collections. The Walt Disney Company bought Marvel Entertainment, LLC in 2009 and Lucasfilm Limited, LLC in 2012 (the home of Star Wars, of course), making Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm corporate siblings. Because of that, Marvel Comics was slated to once again be the publisher of Star Wars comic books.
To begin this new era of Star Wars comic books, Marvel recently launched a new comic book entitled Star Wars. This title returns to the period immediately following the events depicted in the original Star Wars film (also known as Episode IV – A New Hope). That means new adventures featuring the classic versions of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader.
Marvel's Star Wars #1 opens shortly after Luke Skywalker destroyed the evil Galactic Empire's most feared and greatest weapon, the Death Star. Now, the Rebel Alliance wishes to press the advantage they gained over Imperial Forces and are launching a daring offensive in a bid to defeat the Empire once and for all.
Now, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 have secretly infiltrated the Corellian Industrial Cluster. Han is pretending to be the official emissary of Jabba the Hutt, whose organization will provide the raw material that the Empire needs for its weapons factory. Our favorite rebels are about to discover that another negotiator is also on his way, and he is someone familiar to them.
What can I say? I love Star Wars. I have only read a small portion of the books and comic books produced in what is called the “Star Wars Expanded Universe.” I have occasionally bought toys, clothing, and other merchandising. Still, I love Star Wars. I have seen all the films (including the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film) in whole or in part so many times that only God knows the number. I did not watch much of the old “Droids” and “Ewoks” Saturday morning cartoon series, but I have seen most of the recent animated series, like “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.”
Yes, I love Star Wars. Marvel's new Star Wars #1 does feel like it is connected to the original Star Wars film, at least to me. Writer Jason Aaron is spot-on with the dialogue. Han's dialogue recalls Harrison Ford of the original trilogy. There are moments in this first issue when artist John Cassaday draws the characters as if he had gone back in time and was the official portrait artist on the set of Star Wars in 1976 when George Lucas began shooting the first film. So what can I say? Of course, I like this. Of course, I love Marvel Comics' new Star Wars #1.
[At the beginning of 2013, Dark Horse Comics launched a comic book entitled Star Wars. It also took us (as a press release said) “back to those heady, adventure-filled days following the destruction of the Death Star—when the Empire ruled, the Rebels were on the run, and the galaxy was a dangerous place where anything might happen!” Dark Horse's Star Wars was a character-driven, science fiction adventure serial, and, to be fair, it was quite good.]

I Reads You Review: SPIDER MAN 2099 #1
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel
WRITER: Peter David
ARTIST: Will Sliney
COLORS: Antonio Fabela
LETTERS: VC's Joe Caramagna
COVER: Simone Bianchi
VARIANT COVERS: Rick Leonardi and Dan Green with Antonio Fabela; J. Scott Campbell with Nei Ruffino; J.G. Jones; and Skottie Young
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (September 2014)
Spider-Man 2099 is a Marvel Comics superhero created by writer Peter David and art Rick Leonardi that first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #365 (cover dated: August 1992). This character is, of course, based on the original Spider-Man created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. This alternate Spider-Man character was created for Marvel Comics' “Marvel 2099” line of comic books.
Spider-Man of 2099 is Miguel O'Hara (the first Latino Spider-Man), a brilliant geneticist living in New York in the year 2099 A.D. He was attempting to recreate the abilities of the original Spider-Man in other people, which led to the accident that caused half his DNA to be re-written with a spider's genetic code. Miguel gained amazing powers and became Spider-Man of the year 2099.
He received his own series, Spider-Man 2099, which was set in a future dystopian America that was governed by corrupt mega-corporations. Now, there is a new Spider-Man 2099 series, written by Peter David, drawn by Will Sliney; colored by Antonio Fabela, and lettered by Joe Caramagna.
Spider-Man 2099 #1 opens with some backstory, which tells readers that Miguel O'Hara. Employed by mega-corp, Alchemax, he is the young genetics genius whose experiments turned him into the Spider-Man of the year 2099. Miguel travels back to the present to save his father, Tyler Stone, the head of Alchemax in 2099, by saving the life of his grandfather, Tiberius Stone, in the present.
O'Hara finds himself stranded in 2014. To protect his identity in the future, while living in the present, Miguel uses the name Mike O'Mara. He sets about establishing his new life in the present, but something from the future has followed him. Why does T.O.T.E.M. want to destroy Spider-Man 2099?
I had not planned on reviewing Spider-Man 2099 #1. It was just another Marvel Comics, “All-New Marvel NOW!,” number-one issue that I was going to give a try. I had the comic book for several weeks before I decided (as an afterthought) to read it.
I had forgotten how often I have enjoyed Peter David-written comic books, but Spider-Man 2099 #1 reminded me. The story is simple and straight-forward in this first issue, but David wonderfully sets it up to launch a quality ongoing series. While Will Sliney is not a spectacular artist, his compositions and storytelling capture the humor and action in David's script. This looks to be a solid comic book, and not just another “acceptable” Spider-Man title.
