Review: STELLAR #1

STELLAR No. 1
IMAGE COMICS/Skybound – @ImageComics @Skybound

STORY: Joseph Keatinge
ART: Bret Blevins
COLORS: Bret Blevins
LETTERS: Rus Wooton
EDITOR: Sean Mackiewicz
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (June 2018)

Stellar created by Robert Kirkman and Marc Silvestri

Stellar is a new comic book series created by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and Marc Silvestri (Uncanny X-Men, Cyberforce).  It is based on Pilot Season: Stellar (cover dated: July 2010), one of many one-shot comic books that Silvestri's company, Top Cow Productions, published under the title, Pilot Season, which introduced new comic book characters and concepts.

Stellar the comic book series focuses on a young woman who was an “ultimate weapon,” meant to end an intergalactic war, but who is now a bounty hunter.  Stellar is written by Joseph Keatinge; drawn and colored by Bret Blevins; and lettered by Rus Wooton.

Stellar #1 introduces a young woman known only as “Stellar.”  She is now a bounty hunter, scouring broken worlds for high-value bounties.  However, those worlds are broken partly because of her; Stellar was once a child transformed into the ultimate weapon, one that would end an intergalactic war.  Stellar searches for redemption, but her past has come back to fight her.

Stellar #1 has some striking graphics.  Bret Blevins (New Mutants; Sleepwalker) offers quirky illustrations, and his coloring ranges from radiant to muted and painterly.  Blevins work here makes me think of late 1970s and early 1980s Heavy Metal comics.  Rus Wooton's lettering itself has a illustrative quality.  Together, Blevins and Wooton present one impressive graphics package.

As for the story, I think of 1980s science fiction and fantasy comics published by independent comic book publishers, such as Alien Encounters (FantaCo Enterprises and Eclipse Comics), Dalgoda (Fantagraphics Books), and Alien Fire (Kitchen Sink Press), to name a few.  I am intrigued by Stellar #1, although I do not think that the narrative contents of this first issue are strong enough to make for an exceptional or particularly special first issue.

6 out of 10

Review: CYBER FORCE #1

CYBER FORCE No. 1 (2018)
IMAGE COMICS/Top Cow Productions – @ImageComics

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

STORY: Matt Hawkins & Bryan Hill
ART: Atilio Rojo
COLORS: Atilio Rojo
LETTERS: Troy Peteri
COVER: Marc Silvestri
VARIANT COVER: Atilio Rojo
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (March 2018)

Cyber Force created by Marc Silvestri

Cyberforce was one of the Image Comics debut titles, and it was created by one of Image Comic' founding members, Marc SilvestriCyberforce #1 (cover dated:  October 1992) was the first issue of a four-issue miniseries that introduced a team of mutants who had their mutant abilities enhanced with cybernetic implants as the result of experimentation.  Volume 2 of Cyberforce ran for 35 issues from 1994 to 1997.  Cyberforce returned in a six-issue miniseries in 2006 and made two more returns, in 2012 and 2015.

The series returns in a new reboot, entitled Cyber Force.  It is written by Matt Hawkins and Bryan Hill; drawn and colored by Atilio Fojo; and lettered by Troy Peteri.

Cyber Force #1 opens in a modern world defined by the technology that humanity has created.  Now, a super-powered terrorist calling herself(?) “the Savior of Worlds” or simply “the Savior” strikes at the heart of that human technological progress.  One of the few survivors of this terrorist's attacks is a man named Morgan Stryker.  Mortally wounded, Stryker can be saved, but at the cost of his humanity.  Now, his daughter, Carin, will have to make that decision for both her father and for herself.

I ignored the 2006 and 2012 returns of Cyberforce/Cyber Force, and I didn't even know about an apparent 2015 digital-only version.  Still, I decided to try this new Cyber Force #1; something said that this could be good, and once upon a fan boy dreary, I was a fan of Cyberforce.

Well, the new Cyber Force is indeed quite good.

Matt Hawkins and Bryan Hill's story is intriguing, and I am a fan of Hill from The Wildstorm: Michael Cray, currently from DC Comics.  I think the big draw in this new series is illustrator and colorist, Atilio Rojo.  Rojo's compositions are exciting and imaginative, with panels displaying a variety of angles and drawing perspectives.  The colors are vibrant and sell the idea that this series is set in a near-future world of trans-humanism and constantly emerging technology.  Troy Peteri's lettering matches nicely with Rojo's vivacious storytelling.

Cyber Force looks to be a nice mix of the old Cyberforce and the new, with an emphasis on the new.  The original series concept offered the promise of being new and exciting, and it mostly did not deliver.  For some reason, I feel that this Cyber Force is more likely to pay off on the original's promise of being dark, edgy, and futuristic.  I really want that to be true.

[This issue contains the following:

– a five-page preview of Aphrodite V by Bryan Hill and Jeff Spokes.  This

– an interview of Matt Hawkins, Bryan Hill, and Atilio Rojo conducted by Brittany Matter.]

BLURB REVIEW:

Youngblood #2 (Image Comics – June 2017) by Chad Bowers and Jim Towe with Juan Manuel Rodriguez

I would like to be snarky and be cynical, but I have to admit that I am really liking this new Youngblood comic book.  Writer Chad Bowers is keeping things relatively simple, introducing new characters and reviving “classic” Youngblood characters.  I don't remember much about the original Youngblood series, but I like the way in which Bowers is bringing together the past while pushing forward with new blood.  Artist Jim Towe and colorist Juan Manuel Rodriguez are quite good on covers and splash pages, and I can see Towe's storytelling steadily improving.  Simply put, I like what Bowers and Towe are doing here and so far, I enjoy the read.

Review: THE WALKING DEAD: The Official Magazine #1

THE WALKING DEAD: THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE #1 (NOV/DEC 2012)
TITAN MAGAZINES – @WalkingDeadMag

WRITERS: Robert Kirkman, Tob Weidmann, Dan Auty, Stuart Barr, Tara Bennett, Jay Bonansinga, Dan Bura, and Bryan Caims
ART: Charlie Adlard
98pp, Color, $9.99 U.S./Canada

The Walking Dead is a black and white comic book series published by Image Comics. It first appeared in late 2003, the creation of writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. Artist Charlie Adlard replaced Moore as of the seventh issue and continues to draw the series, which, as of this writing, recently reached issue #103. The series follows Rick Grimes, his family and friends, and other survivors as the try to stay alive during a zombie apocalypse.

In 2010, a television series, “The Walking Dead,” based on the comic book, debuted on cable television channel, AMC. The Golden Globe Award-nominated series recently began its third season. The Walking Dead has also spawned merchandise such as video games, novels, apparel, (including Halloween costumes), action figures, toy lines, etc.

Like other genre media franchises (Star Wars, Star Trek), The Walking Dead has its own magazine. The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine #1 (November/December 2012) is now walking to newsstands and into mailboxes.

I must admit that I’ve never read a single issue of The Walking Dead comic book, although I’ve been meaning to since it first debuted. I watched the TV series’ debut episode, but I’ve only sporadically watched it since then. But The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine has my back. It is designed and produced not only to inform fans, but also to guide fresh newbie meat into the world of The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine covers everything about The Walking Dead – comics, prose fiction, merchandise, and, of course, the TV series. That includes an interview with Glen Mazzara, the showrunner of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Mazzara even explains what a showrunner does (basically the day to day administration of the production). There is also an interview with the host of “Talking Dead,” Chris Hardwick.

“Choice Cuts,” one of what will be several regular features in the magazine, looks at Michonne, a hugely-popular character since her debut in the comic book. There is also an interview with Danai Gurira, the actress who portrays Michonne on the TV series. We learn, for instance, that Gurira is an award-winning playwright.

Do I have to tell you that there is a Robert Kirkman interview? There is a synopsis of the comic book from issue #1 to #100 and a preview of the TV series’ Season Three. Read the exclusive Walking Dead short story, “Just Another Day at the Office.” Learn about series artist Charlie Adlard and see the variant covers of The Walking Dead #100, including art from Bryan Hitch, Todd McFarlane, Ryan Ottley, Sean Phillips, Frank Quitely, Matthew Roberts, and Marc Silvestri.

There is so much more. And it’s good. Why be objective? The Walking Dead: The Official Magazine is awesome.
