160pp, Color, $19.99 U.S., $25.99 CAN (November 28, 2017)
When it debuted on NBC on September 8, 1966, the science fiction television series, “Star Trek,” was like nothing that came before it. Created by Gene Roddenberry, “Star Trek” followed the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), a “starship,” as it traveled through the Milky Way galaxy during the future-decade of the 2260.
The series depicted the adventures of Enterprise's crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk. Kirk was assisted by six prominent crew members: first officer and science officer, Spock; chief medical officer, Leonard “Bones” McCoy; chief engineer, Montgomery “Scotty” Scott; communications officer, Nyota Uhura; helmsman Hikaru Sulu; and navigator Pavel Chekov.
When NBC broadcast Star Trek's final episode on June 3, 1969, fans of the television show refused to let it go. In a sense, that ending was the beginning of what is a five-decade old, worldwide, multi-platform media franchise. One of those platforms is comics, beginning in 1967 with the publication of Star Trek comic books by Gold Key Comics.
IDW Publishing is the current license-holder (since 2006) with the rights to produce and publish comic books based on the various Star Trek films and television series. Last year, IDW announced Star Trek: Waypoint, an anthology comic book series that would offers stories featuring the crews and characters from the first five Star Trek television series: “Star Trek (The Original Series),” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” and “Star Trek: Enterprise.”
In November 2017, IDW published the trade paperback, Star Trek: Waypoint, which collected the comics short stories published in Star Trek: Waypoint issues #1-6. This collection reprints 12 stories and features the creative efforts of more than 40 writers, artists, colorists, and letterers.
Story highlights include “Puzzles,” which is set in the world of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and finds Captain Geordi La Forge and his crew of Datas taking on a massive cube-shaped starship and its obstinate artificial intelligence. Original Trek character, Lt. Uhura makes a surprising and curious friend in”Daylily.” Science and coffee save the day in the “Star Trek Voyager” in the story, “The Wildman Maneuver.”
The crew of the “Deep Space 9” try to understand Bajoran tradition in “Mother's Walk.” Captain Jonathan Archer (“Star Trek: Enterprise”) discovers “The Fragile Beauty of Loyalty.” The unknown and the new and Spock's replacement vex the crew of the classic “The Original Series” crew in “The Fear” (a “Star Trek: Phase II” story).
I vaguely remember the Star Trek: Waypoint miniseries (2016-2017), but I mostly ignore Star Trek comic books. Over the decades that I have read comic books, I have read a few Star Trek comic books, here and there, but I never really warmed to them. When IDW sent me a copy of the Waypoint trade paperback for review, I kinda looked forward to reading it. I forced myself to start with the first story, which I hoped would build some momentum that would help me read the entire book.
Wow, was I shocked. I didn't know that Star Trek comics could be as good as the stories contained in this book. I consider five of the twelve stories: “Puzzles,” “Daylily,” “Mother's Walk,” “Come Away Child,” and “The Fear” to be great stories that would be worthy of being turned into episodes of their respective Star Trek TV series – if those series were still being produced. Two other stories, “The Fragile Beauty of Loyalty” and “The Rebound Effect” are close to being exceptional. The five other stories are of varying degrees of quality – novel, funny, and offbeat.
“Puzzles” is the first really good story I have read that is written by Donny Cates, who became a hot property off his Image Comics vampire comic book, Redneck. I read the first two issues of Redneck and the first issue of Cates' Babyteeth (AfterShock Comics), and none of them impressed me. So I was was pleasantly surprised by the imagination of “Puzzles.”
I adore “Daylily,” which is written, drawn, and colored by Sandra Lanz and lettered by Andworld Designs. The story reminds me of the short-lived NBC Saturday morning animated series, “Star Trek: The Animated Series,” which I loved as a child. Plus, this story stars my sci-fi fantasy boo, Uhura.
I highly recommend this book to people who read Star Trek comic books. I would also suggest that Trek fans in general give this book at least a cursory glance. I think that will be enough to encourage one to purchase Star Trek: Waypoint.

Review: MIRACLEMAN by Gaiman & Buckingham #1
MIRACLEMAN BY GAIMAN & BUCKINGHAM No. 1

Miracleman created by Mick Angelo
Rated Mature
Miracleman Book Four: The Golden Age: “Prologue,” “A Prayer and Hope,” and “Retrieval” – Part 1
Marvelman was a British superhero character created in 1954 by writer-artist Mick Anglo for British publisher, L. Miller & Son. The character was originally created as a substitute for the American character, Captain Marvel (Fawcett Comics), in the U.K. Marvelman comic books were published until 1963, but the character was revived in 1982 by writer Alan Moore. In the pages of Warrior, a British monthly, black-and-white, anthology comics magazine, Moore offered a darker, post-modern take on the character.
In August 1985, Eclipse Comics began reprinting the Marvelman stories from Warrior (in color) in a comic book entitled, “Miracleman” (to avoid legal problems with Marvel Comics). Miracleman issues #1-6 reprinted all the Warrior content. Starting with Miracleman #7, the series presented new Miracleman stories written by Alan Moore. Moore wrote the series until issue #16. Then, Neil Gaiman, who was then becoming famous for his work on The Sandman comic book series (DC Comics), took over with issue #17. Gaiman continued to write the series, but Miracleman ceased publication with issue #24 when Eclipse closed due to financial difficulties.
After obtaining the rights to Marvelman, Marvel Comics brought Eclipse Comics’ Miracleman series back into print. The recently launched Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham begins the reprinting of Miracleman stories by Neil Gaiman and artist Mark Buckingham. Gaiman will also apparently be able to complete his Miracleman arc left unfinished over two decades ago.
Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham #1 opens in 1987. It is “The Golden Age.” It is a new world, one that is free of war, of famine, and of poverty. Olympus, the pyramid of Miracleman, towers above London, and it can be seen from orbit above the Earth, piercing the clouds. The narrator, a man, joins three pilgrims on a climb to the summit where they will pray and each seek a miracle from Miracleman. Not all of them will survive this arduous, impossible journey.
Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham #1 reprints the contents of Miracleman #17 (cover dated: June 1990), which was originally published by Eclipse Comics. I think that I may have read this issue, or at least, I bought it. At some some point, I gave up on Neil Gaiman's take on Miracleman, which was so different from Alan Moore's Miracleman, which I so dearly loved... at the time.
Reading the early issues of Marvel Comics' reprinting of Moore's run on this series, I found that it did not mean as much to me now, as it did when I first read it. However, I am quite impressed with these first three chapters of Gaiman's Miracleman. Gaiman's story is introspective and imaginative. Mark Buckingham's art and graphical storytelling is constantly shifting in tone, breathing even more life into Gaiman's lively story.
Now, I definitely want to read more and to rediscover and to discover Gaiman and Buckingham's Miracleman.

I Reads You Review: DEAD BOY DETECTIVES #1
DEAD BOY DETECTIVES #1

STORY: Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham

VARIANT COVER: Cliff Chiang

Rated “T” for Teen
“Schoolboy Terrors” The New Girl, Part 1 of 4
Dead Boy Detectives created by Neil Gaiman and artists Matt Wagner and Malcolm Jones III
In preparation for Vertigo Comics’ new ongoing series, Dead Boy Detectives, I read The Sandman Presents: The Deadboy Detectives. This 2001 miniseries was written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Bryan Talbot (pencils) and Steve Leialoha (inks), with colors by Daniel Vozzo. I loved it because this miniseries is the kind of comic book that is the reason I keep reading comic books.
I am not as enamored with the new series, Dead Boy Detectives, which launched a few months ago. A production of the creative team of Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham, the first issue of Dead Boy Detectives is not quite tepid, but it certainly lacks the sparkling wit and dazzling imagination of The Sandman Presents: The Deadboy Detectives #1.
For those that don’t know, “The Dead Boy Detectives” are Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland. The two characters first appeared in The Sandman #25 (cover dated: April, 1991) and were created by writer Neil Gaiman and artists Matt Wagner and Malcolm Jones III. Paine was murdered at his British boarding school, Saint Hilarion’s, in 1916, and spent 75 years in Hell. He escaped in 1991 and returned to Hilarion’s, where he met Rowland (during the events depicted in The Sandman story arc, Seasons of Mist). Rowland died during this time, but refused to accompany Death, preferring the prospect of future adventures with Paine. The two ghosts spent a decade haunting places, preparing to become “first-rate detectives.”
As Dead Boy Detectives #1 begins, Edwin and Charles are observing the spectacle that is British performance artist, Maddy Surname. With her rock star husband, Seth Von Hoverkraft, Maddy plans to steal Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, “Sunflowers,” from the British National Gallery. They will replace Van Gogh’s masterpiece with another painting that Maddy will steal before the Van Gogh theft. Maddy and Seth’s daughter, Crystal Palace, seems an unwilling participant in the performance.
However, some others decide that they also want play in this game, and it has a great affect on Crystal Palace. Now, Crystal makes a decision that will have the Dead Boy Detectives shadowing her to a familiar place.
With Brubaker’s layered story and radiant characters and Bryan Talbot and Steve Leialoha’s textured and detailed art, The Sandman Presents: The Deadboy Detectives was a dazzling fantasy, graphic novella. Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham offer something with potential, but, at this point, it seems like little more than a story with its style lifted from Daniel Clowes’ Ghost World.
I must say that I do like the art by Buckingham (pencils), Gary Erskine (inks), and Lee Loughridge (colors). Beyond that, I guess I’ll just have to keep reading.
