The New 52 Review: RED LANTERNS #1

RED LANTERNS #1
DC COMICS

WRITER: Peter Milligan
PENCILS: Ed Benes
INKS: Rob Hunter
COLORS: Nathan Eyring
LETTERS: Carlos M. Mangual
COVER: Ed Benes and Rob Hunter with Rod Reis
32pp, Color, $2.99

Part of “The New 52,” DC Comics’ re-launch of its superhero comics line, is the release of comic books starring characters that previously never had their own ongoing comic book series. The Red Lanterns, who are part of Green Lantern lore, are one such group of characters.

Red Lanterns #1 (“With Blood and Rage”) opens as the Red Lanterns lead an assault against marauders in Space Sector 666. However, Atrocitus, the leader and creator of the Red Lanterns, is just not feeling the rage and believes that he is just going through the motions. What is this malaise? Meanwhile, in Small Ockdon, United Kingdom, brothers Ray and John face a tragedy that brings out the rage.

Writer Peter Milligan fashions scenes and set pieces that convincingly convey what seems to be this series dominant theme, rage. There are also odd moments of poignancy in a few scenes, but the story reads cold, lacking the heat of the hotter emotions. The art by Ed Benes (who is from the chicken scratchy school of early Image Comics art) and Rob Hunter does nothing for me. It is flat and the emotions and feelings it suggests (rage, resentment, jealousy) come across as cartoonish and fake. I’m not interested in where this series is going, although I am usually curious about what Milligan is writing.

Leroy Douresseaux on AFTER DARK #3

AFTER DARK #3
RADICAL PUBLISHING

CREATORS: Antoine Fuqua and Wesley Snipes
WRITER: Peter Milligan
ARTIST: Leonardo Manco
PAINTS: Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo, Sansan Saw
LETTERS: Clayton Cowles
COVER: Tae Young Choi
56pp, Color, $4.99

His legal troubles did not stop movie producer and actor Wesley Snipes, best known for the Blade film franchise, from helping to create a comic book. With director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), Snipes created After Dark, a science fiction comic book miniseries from Radical Publishing. Hellblazer alums Peter Milligan and Leonardo Manco actually produce the comic book, with Milligan the scriptwriter and Manco the artist.

Set in the future, After Dark takes place on an Earth that exists in a state of near-perpetual darkness. Civilization is mostly confined to domed cities, with Solar City being the most populated. The populace either lives in a drug-addled stupor or engages in rioting because of boredom. The rulers of Solar City decide that Angel, a messianic figure who hasn’t been seen in decades, can tame the populace. They enlist Omar, a Bedouin drifter, to guide a rag-tag team composed of specialists and known criminals into the wilds outside Solar City to find Angel.

As After Dark #3 opens, words gets out that Angel has been found and that she is coming to Solar City. That means a happy ending, right? It’s not that simple and neither is Angel, and friends become enemies.

I give credit to the creators for making this last issue of After Dark so… dark. It’s gritty, violent, tragic, and even for a few, small moments, poignant. At 150 pages of narrative, one would think that this story is long enough. It’s not. After Dark isn’t a miniseries so much as it is an epic, and there needed to be much more room in the story for the characters. It is almost as if Peter Milligan’s storytelling is too big for this miniseries. Still, After Dark is an interesting, darker-than-usual, dystopian fiction that offers a large, rich assortment of attention-grabbing ideas and elements.

Leroy Douresseaux on After Dark #2

AFTER DARK #2

RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATORS: Antoine Fuqua and Wesley Snipes
WRITER: Peter Milligan
ARTIST: Leonardo Manco
PAINTS: Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo, Sansan Saw
LETTERS: Clayton Cowles
COVER: Francesco “Matt” Mattina
56pp, Color, $4.99

After Dark is a Radical Publishing comic book series created by director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and actor Wesley Snipes (Blade). This science fiction series is actually written by Peter Milligan (Hellblazer).

After Dark is set in the future on an Earth that exists in a state of near-perpetual darkness. Civilization is mostly confined to domed cities, with Solar City being the most populated. Some of the populace lives in a drug-addled stupor; others riot either because they have a cause or because they are bored. The rulers of Solar City decide that Angel, a messianic figure who hasn’t been seen in decades, can tame the populace. They enlist Omar, a Bedouin drifter, to guide a rag-tag team composed of specialists and known criminals into the wilds outside the city to find Angel.

After Dark #2 opens in the disastrous aftermath of Omar’s mission to save the ill Trooper Jones. Now, the Bedouin is left in the darkness with Ana, a femme fatale, and the gang brawler, “Monster” Monclare. The trio eventually rejoins the mission and the group resumes the trip to Angel’s last known location, Archipelago City, where they find more than they expected.

This second issue of After Dark is a much better read than the first. For one thing, Peter Milligan does something at which he is immensely good: write character drama for science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and After Dark is a blend of all three. Getting to know these characters makes the story a much better read, and, combined with the interesting plot twists and quirks, the characters make After Dark that much more attractive. As usual, anything drawn by Leonardo Manco is good graphical storytelling, and the paints by the team of Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo, Sansan Saw bring out Manco’s best artistic traits.

Fans of post-apocalyptic science fiction comic books and Peter Milligan’s work will want to try After Dark.

As they gut their house in the U.K. during a remodeling designed to increase the home’s value, their tenuous family ties quickly tear apart as well. And when the Ushers start dying one by one, of most unnatural causes, A SICKNESS IN THE FAMILY takes the reader on a bizarre and often gruesome path leading to a profoundly shocking twist that will haunt you long after the book is done.

A 5-issue miniseries from writer Si Spencer and red-hot artist Sean Murphy (JOE THE BARBARIAN). When John Constantine is run over by a truck, it takes a little while for England's nicotine-fueled magus to realize that he's perched between life and death. After a few weeks of hospital rehab, Constantine finds the London streets VERY different from when he left them behind as a series of occult murders and mutilations demands his attention. The common denominator points back to the ER where he was admitted…

I, ZOMBIE
Author Chris Roberson (Cinderella: From Fabletown with Love) and illustrator Michael Allred (Madman) give their unique take on the Zombie Mythos. Told from a female zombie’s perspective I, ZOMBIE is a smart, witty detective series with a mix of urban fantasy and romantic dramedy. Gwendolyn “Gwen” Dylan is a 20-something gravedigger in an eco-friendly cemetery. Once a month she must eat a human brain to keep from losing her memories, but in the process she becomes consumed with the thoughts and personality of the dead person until she eats the next brain. Along with her best friend Eleanor, a swinging 60s ghost, a posse of vampires who play paintball, a smitten weredog, and a sexy but demented mummy, Gwen ‘zombie girl detective’ sets out to fulfill the dead person’s last request, solve a crime, or right a wrong.

I Reads You Review: GREEK STREET #2

DC COMICS/VERTIGO

WRITER: Peter Milligan
ARTIST: Davide Gianfelice
COLORS: Patricia Mulvihill
LETTERS: Clem Robins
COVER: Kako
32pp, Color, $2.99

Book One: Blood Calls for Blood, Part Two “Where Two Roads Meet Together”

Greek Street is a contemporary fantasy series from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, created by writer Peter Milligan and artist Davide Gianfelice. This ongoing series re-imagines the ancient Greek Tragedies, setting them on the streets of modern London, such as the real the Greek Street, in particular.

In Greek Street #2, the hero, Eddie (Oedipus), remains in hiding because he had sex with his mother and then murdered her. Meanwhile, London homicide Detective Inspector Daedalus continues his murder investigation. Eddie gets a break, of sorts, when the House of Furey hires him to keep an eye on an influential aristocrat, Lord Menon.

[This comic book also includes a preview of the Vertigo series, Sweet Tooth.]

I still think it is too early in the series for me to say much about about the story other than that in terms of quality, it reads quite well. I think that Greek Street is a good concept, and so far, both issues have had some funny, even clever moments. Still, I wonder if this series would even exist if it weren’t written by Pete Milligan. Would a publisher risk money on a slow-moving story in which the author is still hiding or holding back much of the current storyline for later issues?

Reading Greek Street’s first storyline or story arc, Blood Calls for Blood, as a trade collection (or graphic novel) will probably allow a reader to make the judgment of if Greek Street is as good as it is supposed to be. I feel a wait-for-the-trade-feeling coming on.

I Reads You Review: GREEK STREET #1

DC COMICS/VERTIGO
WRITER: Peter Milligan
ARTIST: Davide Gianfelice
COLORS: Patricia Mulvihill
LETTERS: Clem Robins
COVER: Kako
40pp, Color, $1.00

Book One: Blood Calls for Blood, Part One “The Monster of Greek Street”

Debuting last summer, Greek Street is a contemporary fantasy series from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. Created by writer Peter Milligan and artist Davide Gianfelice, Greek Street re-imagines the ancient Greek Tragedies, setting them on the streets of modern London, on the real Greek Street, in particular.

In the first issue, the hero, Eddie (Oedipus), who grew up in a series of children’s homes, goes looking for his real mother, which has dire consequences. By the end of the first issue, Eddie has drawn the attention of a crime syndicate, The House of Furey (the furies). Meanwhile, a London homicide named Daedalus begins a murder investigation.

This early in the series there is not much to say about the story other than that in terms of quality, it reads quite well. What is ready to have judgment passed upon it is the art by Davide Gianfelice. It’s excellent. Gianfelice has a wonderful pencil line and brush stroke that is nearly perfect for cartooning the human figure. Gianfelice captures both the sultry and clammy natures of strippers and sex with equal aplomb. He even makes violence and the threat of it sexy. With Patricia Mulvihill’s lustrous colors over Gianfelice art, Greek Street has its catchy visual hook.
