Dark Horse Announces New Hire
Press release:
DARK HORSE INTRODUCES NEW EVENTS AND COMMUNITY MANAGER, KARI YADRO
Today Dark Horse announced the appointment of Kari Yadro to the newly created role of events and community manager. In the beginning, Dark Horse was built on the idea of creating an atmosphere that was friendly and accessible to both creators and fans. In 2010, Dark Horse has looked to continue this tradition with a heavy focus on the growing online social-networking channels. Looking forward to 2011, the company hopes to focus heavily on the growing comics community in Portland, Oregon, and the world at large, with more events and activities demonstrating leadership balanced with accessibility.
This new position will not only encompass all Dark Horse trade-show coordination and planning, but also any and all Dark Horse events, such as in-store appearances and signings. In addition, the Dark Horse events and community manager will focus heavily on Dark Horse’s social-networking strategy, overseeing Facebook, Twitter, and all other channels, as this has become an increasingly important area for Dark Horse.
Kari Yadro comes to Dark Horse from a storied career with Barnes & Noble, where she currently holds the position of community relations manager. In her time there, she has handled coordination of all in-store events, large and small. Kari’s passion for science fiction led her into the comic shop by way of Dark Horse’s own Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight.
“It’s an honor to be joining the comic-book industry, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, where there are so many amazing publishers,” said Kari Yadro. “I’m really excited about connecting with Dark Horse’s fans and exploring partnership opportunities with organizations in the local and world communities.”
“As Dark Horse continues to expand our presence in the minds of fans on and off of the trade-show floors, I am confident that Kari brings the perfect balance of events experience and community building to her new role,” said Dark Horse’s director of public relations, Jeremy Atkins. “I couldn’t be happier about the level of energy and enthusiasm she brings to the position.”
Kari will cut her teeth at October’s New York Comic Con. Please make sure to stop by the Dark Horse booth and say hello.

Glenn Beck's "I Have a Dream" Speech
From Truthdig by Arthur Blaustein:
I have a dream that the Yalie son of a Houston oil magnate can walk hand in hand with the daughter of a Wall Street hedge fund operator on the white sands of Southampton while evading inheritance taxes.
I have a dream that from the glorious Pacific to the bountiful Atlantic the Castro will become gayless and Greenwich Village will become free of feminism.

The Watchers. 1945. The two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki seem to have put an end to the evil plots of William of Lecce. In liberated Paris, Daniel Rosenthal, a survivor of the death camps, learns how to live again. He owes his survival to a “star,” a strange tarot card given to him by the surrealist poet Robert Desnos in the Terezín concentration camp, who also told him about the mysterious cabaret, L’Arcane 17. Daniel begins a descent into a world he did not know existed and into a story that the textbooks do not teach: the secret history.

Happy Anniversary to Me
It was one year ago today that I posted by first blog entry for I Reads You. How did I Reads You come about? Well… there were a series of events that began in 2008 and culminated over the summer 2009 that convinced me and even reminded me that I should not and could not rely entirely on someone else to publish my work. I had actually opened a LiveJournal account back around 2003 or so, and I had seriously considered blogging back in 2005. Nothing came of that.
When I made the move, I knew that I would have a smaller audience than that to which I’d become accustomed, but I had to make a move. I am still happy that I made that move. I hope to use I Reads You even more in its second year as the home for my work. I want to thank everyone who read or reads this blog, and I want to give a shout out to those who have linked to I Reads You, especially http://www.mangablog.net/.

Jerry Robinson at 2010 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention
There is a bunch of comic book-related activity coming up at the 2010 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention.
Jerrry Robinson is also going to appear at the 2010 Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, alongside Wildcat and Dondi creater Irwin Hasen. Hasen is appearing to discuss his work on a comic strip he did based on the radio show “The Goldbergs” while Robinson is attending as his winglegend. Both will discuss their careers and generally be available to sign autographs and talk with fans. If you don’t want to meet your heroes across a rope or at the end of a line, this is the convention for you.
In addition, the Saturday dinner program will include an all-star recreation of an episode of The Adventures of Superman, the radio program that did so much to establish the Superman legend.
The 35th Annual Friends of Old Time Radio Convention (http://www.fotr.net/) will take place October 21-24 2010 at the Ramada Plaza hotel in Newark, NJ. The four day event features live recreations of classic old time radio programs with all-star casts as well as memorabilia, music, panel discussions, autographs and historical presentations. The convention is a great way to meet and show appreciation for the veterans who made old time radio great as well as get to know some of the younger actors who are working to keep the tradition alive.
The invited guest list looks great so far. I know everyone will enjoy seeing the great Simon Jones ("Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") again. Shirley Mitchell (Lelia Ransom on Gildersleeve), New York area television host Chuck McCann, WXYZ veteran Elaine Hyman ("The Lone Ranger"), ABC announcer Bill Owen and Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin on Our Miss Brooks) are also back for more. Local New York talk show legend Joe “Nostalgia King” Franklin will recreate his show live on stage, bringing his own surprises guests along. Another great returning guest is Ivan Curry, star of “Bobby Benson and the B-Bar B Riders” on old time radio. The guest list changes frequently, so keep checking the website for updates.
Thursday - Sunday programs include an afternoon program that consists of a recreation, panel discussions and dealer rooms. The evening program features a buffet dinner in which there is at least one special guest at each table and all-star recreations. It's a great way to socialize with the stars as well as see them perform. On Sunday, there is a buffet breakfast and panel with remaining guests.
Shows scheduled for recreation this year include The Great Gildersleeve, The Adventures of Sam Spade, The First Nighter, Fibber McGee & Molly, Columbia Workshop, Screen Guild Theater and The Adventures of Superman.
Full information on the convention including room rates (historically low right now at $75/AAA) and registration information for the convention itself is available at http://www.fotr.net/.
