Review: Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi - CAPTAIN PHASMA #1
JOURNEY TO STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – CAPTAIN PHASMA No. 1

Captain Phasma: Book 1, Part I
Two years ago, Marvel Comics published Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire. It was a four-issue miniseries that was set in the immediate aftermath of the events depicted in the 1983 film, Return of the Jedi (or Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi). It introduced the parents of a pivotal character who, at the time, was to appear in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VII), a little over two months after the first issue of Shattered Empire.
Now, a little over two months before the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII), Marvel is publishing another Star Wars “Journey to” comic book miniseries. This is Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma. It written by Kelly Thompson; lettered by Clayton Cowles; and features the team of artist Marco Checchetto and colorist Andres Mossa (who drew and colored Shattered Empire).
Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma #1 opens on the First Order's super-weapon, “Starkiller Base,” parallel to what is the final act of The Force Awakens. Captain Phasma has escaped from the trash compactor into she was forced by Han Solo, Chewbacca, and the former stormtrooper FN-2187, now known as “Finn.” Starkiller Base is under attack by Resistance Forces, and Phasma discovers that the Resistance had help inside the base. Now, Phasma has a new mission – hunt and kill the traitor who allowed Starkiller Base to be destroyed.
From the moment Star Wars fans first spotted Phasma in an early movie trailer for The Force Awakens, they have had high expectations for this character. Alas, her part in the film was small and her role mostly unimpressive – relative to expectations. Phasma is supposed to have a bigger role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In the meantime, she comes across as quite menacing in Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma #1. Writer Kelly Thompson tells the story using first person narration by Phasma and gives the readers a look at how relentless she is in service of the First Order. This could prove to be perilous however, if Thompson characterizes Phasma as nothing more than a cog in service of the First Order. That would make this miniseries a long and dull one.
I find the work of artist Marco Checchetto here to be what it has been in his previous Marvel Comics work: pretty art, but sometimes cluttered graphical storytelling. Luckily, Andres Mossa is here to add some dynamism to the storytelling.
So I hope that the storytelling in Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma gets stronger. This first issue shows the potential of the series, but is itself a bit lukewarm. Of course, this may be because Captain Phasma is still a character that is mostly a blank slate.

Review: CHAMPIONS #1
CHAMPIONS No. 1

COVER: Humberto Ramos with Edgar Delgado
VARIANT COVERS: Alex Ross; Mark Brooks; John Tyler Christopher; Jay Fosgitt; Rahzzah; Art Adams with Jason Keith; Mike Hawthorne with Matt Milla; Skottie Young

Back in 1975, Marvel Comics introduced a new team of superheroes known as The Champions. Marvel Comics' new publishing initiative, NOW!, offers a new version of that semi-classic. Entitled Champions, it is created by writer Mark Waid and artist Humberto Ramos. The comic book is written by Waid; drawn by Ramos (pencils) and Victor Olazaba (inks); colored by Edgar Delgado; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.
Champions #1 opens in the home of Kamala Khan a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. The teen girl's life is in a state of flux. Just five days ago, she quit the Avengers. Now, she calls on two other former teen Avengers who quit the team before her, Spider-Man (Miles Morales) and Nova (Sam Alexander). Kamala is going to try to convince her former teammates to start a new team, one that wants to “put the wold back together” whenever their superhero activities break it. Can she convince them and maybe a few more young heroes to go along with that idea?
Sometime in the long-ago, I am sure that I read The Champions, either that or a comic book in which they appeared. That is not important here because the new Champions are something different. They want to fix the things that they break because they believe that the “grown up” or “older” superheroes are not concerned with damage control or the mess they leave behind, or are at least not as concerned as they should be.
I am curious to see where this goes. When Mark Waid is good, he is quite good, and he starts good here. I am a sucker for most anything drawn by Humberto Ramos and have been for over two decades. I should be upfront with that. I am partial to giving this creative team a shot, and I am willing to recommend the first issue, at least. But I'm coming back for more and will review this series again, probably soon.

Review: CINEGEEK
CINEGEEK
IDW PUBLISHING – @IDWPublishing
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
CARTOONIST: Pluttark
TRANSLATION: Brandon Kander
EDITOR: Justin Eisinger
ISBN: 978-1-63140-900-4; hardcover – 7 7/8” x 10 1/3” (August 1, 2017)
96pp, Color, $14.99 U.S., $19.99 CAN
Cinegeek is a collection of single-page cartoons created by the French cartoonist, illustrator, and graphic designer, Rudy Spiessert, using the name “Pluttark.” Cinegeek was originally published as Cinégeek in 2014 by Editions Delcourt (France).
Each cartoon take as its subject Hollywood films, especially genre films like superhero, science fiction, fantasy, horror, and action movies and also big budget event films of multiple genres from the major studios. These cartoons also reference famous, infamous, and cult actors and directors. Filmmakers and performers referenced here are people that would be well-known to film buffs and fanatics and movie lovers.
Each cartoon is centered around some kind of movie trivia, but most of the cartoons use trivia to comment, mock, spoof, make fun of the films, filmmakers, and movie stars. An example of commentary would include “Pop Stars Miscast in Unsuitable Movie Roles” (like Rihanna in Battleship and Mick Jagger in Freejack).
An example of mocking would be “Michael Bay Movie Kits” and “Actors Who Always Play the Same Role.” I think the best example of Pluttark spoofing is “Marlon Brando's Flowchart.” In the “making fun of” category is “Movies It's Hard to Believe Ever Saw the Light of Day.” Pluttark includes Super Mario Bros., which is indeed horrible, but he also mentions the live-action Thunderbirds movie from 2004 (with the late Bill Paxton as the Thunder papa), which I really liked.
Some of the trivia yields good-natured ribbing: “Evolution of the Batman Costume,” and “Superhero Film Adaptations We Could Perhaps Have Done Without” (Catwoman; the 1979 Captain America TV series). “Proof That Obi-Wan Kenobi Is Completely Crazy” might be gentle ribbing, but it makes me think that the “prequel trilogy” did more to hurt the original Star Wars films than to help.
Some of the cartoons also offer some really good and interesting trivia: “Bizarre Japanese Film Genres,” “The Real Name of Those Animal Stars,” and “The Coolest Cars.” The nicest bonus is the two-page “'Alien, as told by Ethel (6½ years old).”
I am including links to some images from the book in this review because I want to encourage movie fans to buy Cinegeek. No movie fan should go without reading Cinegeek at least once.
