Review: SCOOBY-DOO, Where Are You #95
SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU? No. 95
DC COMICS – @DCComics
STORY: Derek Fridolfs; Paul Kupperberg
ART: Scott Jeralds
COLORS: Silvana Brys; Heroic Age
LETTERS: Saida Temofonte; Travis Lanham
EDITOR: Harvey Richards
COVER: Derek Fridolfs with Pamela Lovas
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S. (December 2018)
Rated “E” for “Everyone”
I am continuing my journey through the renewal of my subscription to the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? comic book series. Join me, will you? I recently received the tenth issue of that renewed subscription.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #95 opens with “Mystery Mashing” (written by Derek Fridolfs and drawn by Scott Jeralds). Mystery Inc.: Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma are attending the “Monster Truck Rally” at Coolsville Coliseum. However, a real life monster truck, “The Diesel Dragon,” is wrecking and crushing the competition, Now, there is indeed a new mystery to solve.
The second story is “The Night of the Undead” (written by Paul Kupperberg and drawn by Scott Jeralds). [It was originally published in Scooby-Doo #157 (August 2010).] It seems to start at a local shopping mall – the first appearance of a zombie. According to a group of students from the local university, a real virus, “Virus-Z,” is the cause of this zombie invasion, and that virus originated in a lab at the university. Mystery Inc. is on hand to discover the truth.
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #95 is not one of the better issues in this second run of my subscription. Other than the monster truck designs by artist Scott Jeralds, “Monster Mashing” does not amount to much. In fact, I think that this plot is similar to a recent Scooby-Doo! / WWE straight-to-DVD animated film. The identity of the culprits behind the zombie attacks depicted in “The Night of the Undead” are obvious from the second page of the story, if not the first.
Anyway, I enjoy reading Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? – good, bad, or mediocre. See you next issue!

Review: CYBER FORCE #1
CYBER FORCE No. 1 (2018)
IMAGE COMICS/Top Cow Productions – @ImageComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Matt Hawkins & Bryan Hill
ART: Atilio Rojo
COLORS: Atilio Rojo
LETTERS: Troy Peteri
COVER: Marc Silvestri
VARIANT COVER: Atilio Rojo
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (March 2018)
Rated M/Mature
Cyber Force created by Marc Silvestri
Cyberforce was one of the Image Comics debut titles, and it was created by one of Image Comic' founding members, Marc Silvestri. Cyberforce #1 (cover dated: October 1992) was the first issue of a four-issue miniseries that introduced a team of mutants who had their mutant abilities enhanced with cybernetic implants as the result of experimentation. Volume 2 of Cyberforce ran for 35 issues from 1994 to 1997. Cyberforce returned in a six-issue miniseries in 2006 and made two more returns, in 2012 and 2015.
The series returns in a new reboot, entitled Cyber Force. It is written by Matt Hawkins and Bryan Hill; drawn and colored by Atilio Fojo; and lettered by Troy Peteri.
Cyber Force #1 opens in a modern world defined by the technology that humanity has created. Now, a super-powered terrorist calling herself(?) “the Savior of Worlds” or simply “the Savior” strikes at the heart of that human technological progress. One of the few survivors of this terrorist's attacks is a man named Morgan Stryker. Mortally wounded, Stryker can be saved, but at the cost of his humanity. Now, his daughter, Carin, will have to make that decision for both her father and for herself.
I ignored the 2006 and 2012 returns of Cyberforce/Cyber Force, and I didn't even know about an apparent 2015 digital-only version. Still, I decided to try this new Cyber Force #1; something said that this could be good, and once upon a fan boy dreary, I was a fan of Cyberforce.
Well, the new Cyber Force is indeed quite good.
Matt Hawkins and Bryan Hill's story is intriguing, and I am a fan of Hill from The Wildstorm: Michael Cray, currently from DC Comics. I think the big draw in this new series is illustrator and colorist, Atilio Rojo. Rojo's compositions are exciting and imaginative, with panels displaying a variety of angles and drawing perspectives. The colors are vibrant and sell the idea that this series is set in a near-future world of trans-humanism and constantly emerging technology. Troy Peteri's lettering matches nicely with Rojo's vivacious storytelling.
Cyber Force looks to be a nice mix of the old Cyberforce and the new, with an emphasis on the new. The original series concept offered the promise of being new and exciting, and it mostly did not deliver. For some reason, I feel that this Cyber Force is more likely to pay off on the original's promise of being dark, edgy, and futuristic. I really want that to be true.
[This issue contains the following:
– a five-page preview of Aphrodite V by Bryan Hill and Jeff Spokes. This
– an interview of Matt Hawkins, Bryan Hill, and Atilio Rojo conducted by Brittany Matter.]

Hulk created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee
“Or is He Both”
The Hulk is a Marvel Comics superhero and monster character. Created by artist Jack Kirby and writer Stan Lee, the Hulk first debuted in The Incredible Hulk #1 (cover dated: May 1962). Hulk comic books have mostly covered two characters. The first is Dr. Robert Bruce Banner (mostly referred to as “Bruce Banner”), a physically weak, socially withdrawn, and emotionally reserved, but brilliant physicist, who is exposed to gamma rays via the explosion of an experimental bomb. This gamma ray exposure physically transforms Banner into the Hulk, a green-skinned (originally grey-skinned), hulking and muscular humanoid that possesses incredible super-strength.
Marvel Comics recently relaunched (again) its Hulk comic book franchise, and the result is the new series, Immortal Hulk. It is written by Al Ewing; drawn by Joe Bennett (pencils) and Ruy José (inks); colored by Paul Mounts; and lettered by Cory Petit.
Immortal Hulk #1 (“Or is He Both”) opens somewhere in rural America (the desert southwest?). Bruce Banner is caught up in a convenience story shooting and ends up dead along with two other people. The man is dead, but is the monster? Thomas Edward Hill is about to find out!
I had the pleasure of reading some early Hulk comics via a reprint collection. I was struck by how much those first four years of Hulk comic books and appearances blended elements of science fiction, sci-fi B-movies, horror fiction, and monster stories.
Writer Al Ewing and artist Joe Bennett have come together to revive the darker elements of the Hulk IP and of the world of The Incredible Hulk. Immortal Hulk #1 is a fantastic first issue, and it reminds me more of a horror comic book from an independent publisher (say Zenescope Entertainment) than it does a Marvel Comics title. Bennett's compositions blend with Ruy Jose's intricate and bejeweled inking and Paul Mounts perfectly-tuned colors to create a moody, brooding horror comic book that seethes and rages to release the power of the monster contained within its covers.
And when the story explodes, the pages can barely contain its star, the Hulk, even the double-page spreads. I hope Al Ewing has not merely teased us with a debut issue that will ultimately not reflect the overall tone of Immortal Hulk. I don't mind the Avengers appearing in this series, but I hope it stays dark fantasy/horror, the way Alan Moore's Swamp Thing did even when the Justice League of America appeared in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #24 (cover dated: May 1984).

Review: JUSTICE LEAGUE #1
JUSTICE LEAGUE No. 1 (2018)
DC COMICS – @DCComics
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
STORY: Scott Snyder
PENCILS: Jim Cheung
INKS: Mark Morales
COLORS: Tomeu Morey
LETTERS: Tom Napolitano
EDITOR: Rebecca Taylor
COVER: Jim Cheung with Laura Martin
VARIANT COVER: Jim Lee and Scott Williams with Alex Sinclair
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (Early August 2018)
Rated “T+” for “Teen Plus”
“The Totality” Part One
The Justice League (also known as Justice League of America or JLA) is DC Comics' premiere superhero group. Conceived by writer Gardner Fox and first drawn by artist Mike Sekowsky, the Justice League first appeared as a team in The Brave and the Bold #28 (cover dated: March 1960). The seven original members were Superman, Aquaman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. The team received its own book with the debut of Justice League of America #1 (cover dated: October 1960).
For the third time in seven years, Justice League debuts with a new first issue. This new Justice League 2018 is written by Scott Snyder. This debut issue is drawn by Jim Cheung (pencils) and Mark Morales (inks); colored by Tomeu Morey; and lettered by Tom Napolitano.
Justice League #1 opens with a comet of golden light streaking across space... and across several periods of time. Next, there is a glimpse of the Justice League's “Hall of Justice.” Then, we find Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman, and Hawkgirl lead fellow superheroes, including Cyborg and Mr. Terrific, into a fight against bands of Neanderthals that have been biologically and technologically advanced by Justice League supervillain, Vandal Savage. However, the arrival of some familiar supervillains and arch-nemesis and of something wicked/mysterious this way comes makes a League victory seem Pyrrhic.
Since 1985, DC Comics turns to a cosmic event to either save itself financially or to simply increase sales with a high-profile publishing event. And quite frankly, I am not interested in another Scott Snyder, time-spanning, multi-universal conspiracy.
But I enjoyed the art in Justice League #1. I will read any comic book story drawn by Jim Cheung, whose pencils are nicely inked by Mark Morales in this issue. Tomeu Morey, as usual, colors with the power of Shaka Zulu, turning in such beauty that I was willing to wade through a story in which I had no interest. Letterer Tom Napolitano, for the umpteenth time, makes the unreadable quite readable.
I have to admit this: I will keep reading Justice League (2018), if future art teams are as good as the one in Justice League #1.
