Rest in Peace, Mile Brand

Myles Brand, the president of the NCAA, died Wednesday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 67. Brand was the first former university president to run college sports' largest governing body. Brand, the former President of Indiana University, will likely be best remembered for firing legendary Indiana Hossiers men's basketball coach Bobby Knight.

In May 2000, Brand put celebrity coach and chair-throwing bully Knight on a zero tolerance policy after shocking allegations about Knight's behavior towards a former player surfaced. Four months later, Brand fired Knight after an Indiana student claimed that the coach grabbed him.

I offer my prayers and condolences to Mr. Brand's family.

Happy Birthday, Mike Mignola

Mike Joseph Mignola is best known as the creator of Hellboy. Mignola's career began to bloom at Marvel thanks to runs on Alpha Flight, The Incredible Hulk, and a four-issue Rocket Raccoon miniseries published in 1985.

Mignola really began to gain attention because of his work on the Phantom Stranger (1987) and The World of Krypton four-issue miniseries (both for DC Comics). 1988 was a year of high profile projects for Mignola. He provided the pencil art for the four-issue prestige format miniseries, Cosmic Odyssey, and he drew the covers for the Batman: A Death in the Family storyline.

Mignola's career was already on the fast track when he debuted the character, Hellboy, in the four-issue miniseries, Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. Mignola collections include Hellboy Library Edition, Vol. 1: Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil (v. 1) and B.P.R.D., Vol. 1: Hollow Earth & Other Stories (Hellboy)

Happy 49th Birthday, Mike.

Happy Birthday, Seth!

I first encountered Seth (the pen name of cartoonist Gregory Gallant) back in the early 1990s via his comic book series, Palooka-ville. Seth is also a highly-respected book designer, having worked on archival series such as Fantagraphics Books The Complete Peanuts and Drawn & Quarterly's The Complete Doug Wright.

His graphic novels include Wimbledon Green and George Sprott: (1894-1975)

Happy 47th Birthday, Seth.

Case Closed on Case Closed 31

I finished Case Closed, Volume 31 (Case Closed (Graphic Novels))

I posted my review at the Comic Book Bin. Case Closed (originally known as Detective Conan) is a classical mystery series - think Agatha Christie, except Agatha is a small Japanese boy named Conan Edogawa. Readers who enjoy Ellery Queen or viewers of PBS mystery series will eat this up.

Dark Horse Comics Names Director of Communications

Press Release from Dark Horse Comics

DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF DIRK WOOD AS DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

It was announced today that Dirk Wood will now serve as the new director of communications for Dark Horse Comics. In his new role, Wood will continue to coordinate all trade-show efforts for Dark Horse, as well as key presentations that the company makes externally. He will continue to serve as the primary contact for all direct-market retailers, as well as helping to oversee programs through Diamond, including, but not limited to, Final Order Cutoff and Free Comic Book Day. While maintaining these previous responsibilities, as well as taking on new challenges, Wood will continue to play a key role in establishing and maintaining the company’s image and message.

Dirk Wood has served the company for over fifteen years, with roots in the direct market through Dark Horse’s sister company, Things From Another World. Eight years ago, Wood moved over to Dark Horse’s in-house sales team and successfully opened many of the company’s larger accounts in the gift and specialty market. He then moved to coordinating all of the company’s trade shows in 2003, and has helped to increase the company’s visibility throughout the industry. After moving to the director level four years ago, Wood helped to redefine the company’s image in the direct market, while assisting the outreach to all new markets and platforms. In his time at Dark Horse, Wood has proven himself to be one of the most versatile faces in the company and an asset to the company’s continuing growth in all areas.

“In a market that keeps changing, it remains a source of pride that I work for and represent one of the constants, Dark Horse Comics,” says Wood. “I look forward to these new challenges, and to continue working to further cement and grow our status as the largest independent comic-book publisher in the world.”

Please join us in congratulating Dirk for his past accomplishments and wishing him well in his future endeavors.

New Ambidextrous on a Disney/Marvel Future

Brandon Thomas peers into his crystal ball and looks five years into the future to see the fruits of the Disney/Marvel union. It's a funny, thoughtful column, but it would be great if things did work out as he suggests.

You know it's really sad that some hardcore retards...err...fans think Hannah Montana and JONAS comic books would be a terrible thing.
