Review: METEOR PRINCE Volume 1
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
CARTOONIST: Meca Tanaka
TRANSLATION: Tetsuichiro Miyaki
LETTERS: Deron Bennett
EDITOR: Nancy Thislethwaite
ISBN: 978-1-4215-7908-5; paperback (January 2015); Rated “T” for “Teen”
200pp, B&W, $9.99 U.S., $12.99 CAN, £6.99 UK
Meteor Prince is a shojo fantasy romance from mangaka, Meca Tanaka (creator of Pearl Pink). The series focuses on an unlucky teen girl and the handsome alien prince who is totally in love with her. Meteor Prince originally appeared in Japan's LaLa magazine.
Meteor Prince, Vol. 1 (Chapters 1 to 5) opens at Izayoi High School. There, Hako Natsune, the “Queen of Bad Luck,” has just had another experience of bad luck. The president of the school's Occult Research Club has drawn a spell circle, and is hoping to use it to rid Hako of her bad luck.
Instead, a naked teen boy seems to fall from Heaven. He is Io, an alien prince, and he declares that Hako is destined to be his mate! Does this mean that Hako's luck has changed?
The Meteor Prince manga seems like a natural comic for me. Since I was a child, I have loved comedies featuring aliens who come to Earth (and also of comedies about humans whisked into space). I was a fan of “My Favorite Martian,” a short-lived, Saturday morning animated series that was a follow-up of the live-action, “My Favorite Martian,” a classic, black and white series from the “Golden Age” of American television.
So I should really love Meteor Prince Volume 1, but I am not that crazy about it. It isn't bad. It is simply one of those shojo fantasy romances that feature pretty art and are built around the familiar loves-me/loves-me-not relationship between a human girl and a boy who is not human. While I like shojo manga (to an extent that still surprises me), I find myself only mildly interested in Meteor Prince. Late in this volume, a new character appears that brings some added conflict and dilemma into the series. So I am curious to see if the second volume is more of the same or if it will offer some surprise and perhaps, some more tension.

Book 1: Skywalker Strikes
In 1977, Marvel Comics published a comic book adaptation of the movie, Star Wars, over the course of six issues. Because of the sales success of that adaptation, Marvel continued publishing this comic book, also entitled Star Wars, assigning a number of writers and artists to fashion new adventures featuring the cast of the Oscar-winning Star Wars, which broke box office records.
During its run of 107 issues and 3 annuals, Star Wars the comic book series also adapted the 1980 film, The Empire Strikes Back (over the course of six issues). The series created new stories to continue the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader, and new characters like Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett. A comic book adaptation of Return of the Jedi was published in a separate four-issue miniseries. Marvel also published two other Star Wars comic books, a fourteen-issue series, Ewoks, and an eight-issue series, Droids. In 1986, Marvel stopped producing new Star Wars comic books.
From 1991 to 2014, Dark Horse Comics held the license to publish Star Wars comic books. During that time, Dark Horse published hundreds of individual Star Wars comic books, paperbacks, and hardcover collections. The Walt Disney Company bought Marvel Entertainment, LLC in 2009 and Lucasfilm Limited, LLC in 2012 (the home of Star Wars, of course), making Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm corporate siblings. Because of that, Marvel Comics was slated to once again be the publisher of Star Wars comic books.
To begin this new era of Star Wars comic books, Marvel recently launched a new comic book entitled Star Wars. This title returns to the period immediately following the events depicted in the original Star Wars film (also known as Episode IV – A New Hope). That means new adventures featuring the classic versions of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader.
Marvel's Star Wars #1 opens shortly after Luke Skywalker destroyed the evil Galactic Empire's most feared and greatest weapon, the Death Star. Now, the Rebel Alliance wishes to press the advantage they gained over Imperial Forces and are launching a daring offensive in a bid to defeat the Empire once and for all.
Now, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 have secretly infiltrated the Corellian Industrial Cluster. Han is pretending to be the official emissary of Jabba the Hutt, whose organization will provide the raw material that the Empire needs for its weapons factory. Our favorite rebels are about to discover that another negotiator is also on his way, and he is someone familiar to them.
What can I say? I love Star Wars. I have only read a small portion of the books and comic books produced in what is called the “Star Wars Expanded Universe.” I have occasionally bought toys, clothing, and other merchandising. Still, I love Star Wars. I have seen all the films (including the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film) in whole or in part so many times that only God knows the number. I did not watch much of the old “Droids” and “Ewoks” Saturday morning cartoon series, but I have seen most of the recent animated series, like “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.”
Yes, I love Star Wars. Marvel's new Star Wars #1 does feel like it is connected to the original Star Wars film, at least to me. Writer Jason Aaron is spot-on with the dialogue. Han's dialogue recalls Harrison Ford of the original trilogy. There are moments in this first issue when artist John Cassaday draws the characters as if he had gone back in time and was the official portrait artist on the set of Star Wars in 1976 when George Lucas began shooting the first film. So what can I say? Of course, I like this. Of course, I love Marvel Comics' new Star Wars #1.
[At the beginning of 2013, Dark Horse Comics launched a comic book entitled Star Wars. It also took us (as a press release said) “back to those heady, adventure-filled days following the destruction of the Death Star—when the Empire ruled, the Rebels were on the run, and the galaxy was a dangerous place where anything might happen!” Dark Horse's Star Wars was a character-driven, science fiction adventure serial, and, to be fair, it was quite good.]

All-New Miracleman Annual #1 is a one-shot comic book published on New Year's Eve 2014 (Wednesday, December 31, 2014). It contains two stories set in the world of Alan Moore and Gary Leach's revived and re-imagined version of Marvelman, the 1950s and early 1960s British superhero character created by British comic book writer-artist, Mick Anglo.
When Alan Moore's Marvelman was brought to America and reprinted by the late Eclipse Comics, it was renamed Miracleman. After acquiring the rights to the Marvelman characters, Marvel Comics is currently reprinting the material produced by Warrior and reprinted by Eclipse and also, Eclipse's own Miracleman comics that it began publishing in the mid-1980s.
The first story in All-New Miracleman Annual #1 is The Priest and the Dragon: “October Incident: 1966.” It is a Marvelman-related story written by Grant Morrison for the British comic magazine, Warrior, the home of Moore's Marvelman revival. No art was produced for the story after it was originally written, and it was put on hiatus when Warrior ceased publication (according to the “Behind the Scenes” section of All-New Miracleman Annual #1).
The story finally sees light with art by former Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada (now Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Worldwide, Inc.). The story centers on an elderly priest who had an encounter, three years before this story begins, with Johnny Bates a.k.a. Kid Miracleman. The story, really, is a vignette, but it is the kind of vignette that can be very powerful and effective with the right artist. Joe Quesada is an effective graphical storyteller, so this story allows us to see Quesada working as a storytelling comic book artist, which he has not been for much of the last decade and a half. Even the lettering by Chris Eliopoulos for this story is potent.
The second story features the Miracleman Family (the Marvelman Family): Miracleman, Young Miracleman, and Kid Miracleman. The story, entitled “Seriously Miraculous,” is written by Peter Milligan and is drawn by Mike Allred with colors by Laura Allred and letters by Travis Lanham. I think that this is an entirely new story.
The story pits the Miracleman Family against the Dictator of Boromania and his hired gun, Gargunza, a Miracleman adversary. While constantly foiling assorted diabolical, but weird plots, Miracleman notices something strange about the places where he and his family have fought.
“Seriously Miraculous” is a hugely enjoyable story. Peter Milligan's name is not often mentioned among the great British comic book writers who started producing work for U.S. comic book publishers in the 1980s and 90s, but it should be. I don't think that I have ever read something by him that was not interesting or inventive or both. He may not have created a Watchmen or a Sandman, but he is never ordinary.
In “Seriously Miraculous,” he has written a story that perfectly plays to Mike Allred's retro-modern style, but not just in terms of style. Milligan and Allred come together for a story that pays homage to Mick Anglo's old Marvelman comics, but also hints at Alan Moore and Gary Leach's revival, while allowing Allred to add his ironic and surreal touches.
Milligan and Allred are a good team, and Quesada brings Morrison's decades-old story to life with the kind of power that it might not have had it been drawn when it was originally intended. All-New Miracleman Annual #1 is a must-have in this second revival of Marvelman/Miracleman.

Review: FATHERLAND - Original Graphic Novel
W.W. NORTON & COMPANY/Liveright – @wwnorton and @LiverightPub
CARTOONIST: Nina Bunjevac
ISBN: 978-0-63149-031-6; hardcover (January 19, 2015)
160pp, B&W, $22.95 U.S., $26.99 CAN
Fatherland is a 2015 graphic novel written and drawn by Canadian illustrator and comic book creator, Nina Bunjevac. Fatherland is a memoir and also a history of Bunjevac's family and of the Balkans, the homeland of Bunjevac's immediate family. Much of this graphic novel's story also focuses on Nina's father, Peter Bunjevac.
In 1975, Nina's mother, Sally, was weary of her husband, Peter's alcoholism. However, she was also increasingly fearful of Peter's growing political fanaticism. He had connected with an organization of Serbian nationalists in Canada and the United States who were determined to overthrow the communist government of Yugoslavia.
Sally took two-year-old Nina and her older daughter, Sarah, and moved to Zemun, Yugoslavia to live with her parents, Momirka and Spasoja. Sally told Peter that it was only going to be a short visit, but he would not let her take their oldest child, a son, Petey, on the trip. With his wife and two daughters gone, Peter Bunjevac continued his activities, as his family's present, just as his family's past, become ensnared in the history of the fatherland.
Above the title on the cover of Fatherland are the words, “A Family History.” This wonderful and engaging graphic novel is indeed a family history, but this comic narrative insists that families are not simply individual units of people that exist outside of the goings-on and happenings of the world. Indeed, Fatherland insists that the creation of a family is firmly rooted in the history of land or nation. A family's conception can only exist by the actions of the past, which act as a kind of fertile plain or earth from which relationships spring.
Reading Fatherland, there were times when I could not separate the story of the Balkans from the story of Peter Bunjevac's family and ancestors. I think that is what Nina Bunjevac wants. She makes 150+ pages of graphical storytelling seem like an epic novel of family and history spread out over two continents and taking place in several nations.
In Fatherland, her exquisitely rendered black and white drawings are like a marriage of cross-hatching and stippling. They have a quality that is photographic, dream-like, and earthy. That may be why this true story felt so real to me. I had not heard of the Toronto-based Nina Bunjevac until W.W. Norton & Company sent me a galley/advanced reading copy of Fatherland. Still, her storytelling welcomed me into the part of her family story that she wanted to reveal to readers through Fatherland.
By the end of it, the loss of life that is the center of Fatherland stung. Why should it? I don't know these people, but Nina Bunjevac made me care enough about them to be hurt. So, readers looking for heartfelt biographical graphic novels and graphic memoirs will want to visit Fatherland.

“Meta-Morphosis” Part One of Five
The original Ms. Marvel, a Marvel Comics female superhero character, was created by writer Gerry Conway and artist John Buscema. First appearing in Ms. Marvel #1 (cover dated: January 1977), she was meant to be the female counterpart of Marvel's Captain Marvel (who first appeared in 1967), not to be confused with Fawcett and later DC Comics' Shazam-Captain Marvel.
There is a new Ms. Marvel, and she is Kamala Khan. Created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, and Adrian Alphona, Kamala is the fourth character to take the name Ms. Marvel. Kamala, who first appeared in Captain Marvel #17 (cover dated: November 2013), is a 16 year-old Pakistani-American from Jersey City, New Jersey. She idolizes Carol Danvers, the original Ms. Marvel who is now the new Captain Marvel. Kamala was given her own Ms. Marvel series, which premiered in February 2014, and she became Marvel Comics' first Muslim character to star in her own comic book.
I remember the debut of the new Ms. Marvel comic book series, but I ignored it. Then, I read The Amazing Spider-Man #7 (2014), in which the new Ms. Marvel appeared, and I suddenly became interested in her. Luckily, my comic book shop had reprints of the first issue of Kamala's Ms. Marvel comic book series, written by G. Willow Wilson, drawn by Adrian Alphona, colored by Ian Herring, and lettered by Joe Caramagna.
Ms. Marvel #1 (“Meta Morphosis”) opens in Jersey City at a Circle Q, where Kamala is holding court with her friend, Nakia, and an employee, Bruno. This gathering, in a small way, encapsulates the problems that Kamala is having with her parents, her culture, and her religion. Wouldn't it be cool if she could eat bacon? If only she could be like her beloved Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, and especially Captain Marvel. Eventually, she will get what she wants, but not the way she wants it.
It was not until after I picked up a copy of Ms. Marvel #1 – Seventh Printing that I discovered that Ms. Marvel was a buzzed-about new comic book. Some are calling it the best comic book of 2014, as I learned via an email from Diamond Distributors and also from an article at website, Comic Book Resources. I don't know if I would call it the best comic book of the year, but if I made a list, it would definitely be in my “Top 10.”
I think of Ms. Marvel as a “girl's comic book,” but I do not mean that in a derogatory way. I am not one of those fans who think that every superhero comic book from either Marvel or DC Comics must be alike. They don't have to all be rehashes and revamps of the same templates and editorial mindsets that old white guys established beginning in the early 1960s, i.e. the Silver Age. I don't mind something completely different.
This new Ms. Marvel is something different; it is something else. It presents a girl's point of view; it is about a young woman struggling to come into her own. Ms. Marvel is not aimed at me; it is not written to appease my fanboy demands.
And that doesn't matter. I like Ms. Marvel anyway. It's so good. It is so different, yet some of the things with which Kamala Khan struggles are universal, so I recognized the dilemmas she faces. When I ignored what I expected from the typical superhero comic book, I found myself embracing Ms. Marvel. I want more of it, and I want to share this with my niece when she is older.
I guess I should not be surprised. Ms. Marvel writer, G. Willow Wilson's late Vertigo series, Air, was decidedly unusual, but alluring and intriguing. I had recently stopped giving letter grades to first issues, but I will make an exception for the first issue of Ms. Marvel.

Review: JACO the Galactic Patrolman
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
CARTOONIST: Akira Toriyama
TRANSLATION: Tetsuichiro Miyaki
LETTERS: James Gaubatz
EDITOR: Alexis Kirsch
ISBN: 978-1-4215-6630-6; paperback (January 2015); Rated “A” for “All Ages”
248pp, B&W, $9.99 U.S., $12.99 CAN, £6.99 U.K.
Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is a shonen manga comedy from Akira Toriyama, best known as the creator of his breakout and breakthrough hit manga, Dragon Ball (published in the U.S. as Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z). Jaco was originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan from July to September 2013. Jaco the Galactic Patrolman focuses on the unlikely friendship between a stranded alien cop and a reclusive, island-dwelling scientist.
VIZ Media recently published Jaco the Galactic Patrolman as a paperback graphic novel, with the story being complete in one volume. This stand-alone book is published under VIZ Media's Shonen Jump imprint, and is rated “‘A’ for All Ages.” The printed edition of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman has a MSRP of $9.99 in the U.S. And $12.99 CAN.
The digital version of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, which is also currently available, is $6.99 (USD/CAN) from VIZManga.com and through the VIZ MANGA App for the Apple iPad®, iPhone® and iPod® touch, Android-powered smart phones. The digital volume of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman can also be purchased through the Nook, Kobo, ComiXology, Kindle, iBooks and GooglePlay stores.
As Jaco the Galactic Patrolman opens, we meet Jaco Teirimentenpibosshi (or Jaco the Galactic Patrolman), an interstellar cop. He crashed his ship on the moon, which forces him to make a crash-landing on a small island on Earth. There, he meets retired scientist and engineer, Omori Tokunoshin. A widower, Omori lives alone on this deserted island, while continuing his research into time-travel.
Omori is perturbed that his quiet life is interrupted by Jaco, who decides to move in with Omori. A member of the Galactic Patrol (which protects the peace of the galaxy), Jaco claims to be “Super Elite,” but he is quite clumsy and always gets into trouble, which aggravates Omori. Can Jaco get along with old man Omori long enough to save the earth from a dangerous threat... and also to save Tights, the 17-year-old girl about to embark on a dangerous rocket ride?
[This volume includes the bonus story, “Dragon Ball Minus: Departure of the Fated Child.”]
Akira Toriyama seems to have a magic touch when it comes to creating manga for young readers, from the Halloween-appropriate COWA! to the beloved Dragon Ball. Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is perfect for young readers. It is cute and fun, but it isn't simple-minded. Like Toriyama's other manga, it is quirky, delightful, and especially inventive and imaginative.
The other cool thing about Jaco the Galactic Patrolman is that it is tied to Dragon Ball, with Jaco and Omori's adventures mostly taking place just as the beginnings of Dragon Ball come together. I have to admit, with some embarrassment, that I was quite happy to discover this connection – like a little kid. In fact, this volume's bonus story is a kind of prequel to Dragon Ball, as it tells the story of how Goku's journey to Earth began. If you need a reason to buy Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, this is it.

I Reads You Review: SPIDER-MAN & THE X-MEN #1
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel
WRITER: Elliot Kalan
ART: Marco Failla
COLORS: Ian Herring
LETTERS: VC's Clayton Cowles
COVER: Nick Bradshaw with Ian Herring
VARIANT COVERS: Skottie Young; Pasqual Ferry
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (February 2015)
Rated T+
Spider-Man created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko; X-Men created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby
The recent death of Wolverine/Logan meant an end to the comic book series, Wolverine and the X-Men. In its place, Marvel Comics launched Spider-Man & the X-Men. This new series is written by Elliot Kalan, drawn by Marco Failla, colored by Ian Herring, and lettered by Clayton Cowles.
Spider-Man & the X-Men #1 opens with Spider-Man's arrival at the X-Men's Jean Grey School as a “Special Class Guidance Counselor.” He is not exactly welcomed by the X-Men, nor is he telling the truth about why he wants to be at the school. Spider-Man is not at the school so much to teach, as he is there, at Wolverine's behest, to find a mole at the school. Logan did not know the mole's identity, so he didn't know for whom that mole was working. Spider-Man tries to be at least as good as a substitute teacher, but his role is tested on his class' first field trip.
Spider-Man & the X-Men reminds me of the old NBC Saturday morning animated series, “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends” (1981 to 1983). The difference is that this comic book has more amazing mutant friends, and they aren't so friendly to Spider-Man. I don't know why “T+” is the rating for this comic book; unless there is something shocking coming in later issues. Spider-Man & the X-Men #1 seems like a kid's comic book, even if it might not qualify for an “all-ages” rating.
Also, Nick Bradshaw (art) and Ian Herring's (colors) cover art for Spider-Man & the X-Men #1 is fabulous. It is a great first issue cover and perfectly suggests both the tone and story of this particular first issue. However, the cover art made me think that Bradshaw's art would be the graphic style for the interior art, and it was not. Series artist Marco Failla is competent, but his mange-influenced style seems like it would have been a better fit a decade ago, when Marvel was trying to do the manga thing.
Remember that short-lived New Mutants series that was launched as part of Marvel's Tsunami initiative? Spider-Man & the X-Men is that comic book reborn – a Tsunami reboot of Wolverine and the X-Men.
