#IReadsYou Review: THE SCUMBAG #5

THE SCUMBAG #5
IMAGE COMICS/Giant Generator

STORY: Rick Remender
ART: Wes Craig
COLORS: Moreno Dinisio
LETTERS: Rus Wooton
DESIGN: Erika Schnatz
EDITOR: Will Dennis
COVER: Nic Klein
VARIANT COVER ARTIST: Davi Go
36pp, Colors, 3.99 U.S. (February 2021)

Rated “M/ Mature”

The Scumbag is a comic book series from writer Rick Remender.  Described as a “comedy espionage series” by publisher Image Comics, The Scumbag's tagline reads, “The fate of the world rests in the hands of the worst person on it!”  The series features a rotating crew of illustrators.  Artist Wes Craig joins colorist Moreno Dinisio and letterer Rus Wooton to complete the current creative team.

The Scumbag is Ernie Ray Clementine, a rundown, raggedy, filthy man.  He is a profane, illiterate, drug-addicted biker and ne'er-do-well with a fifth-grade education.  However, he meets Sister Mary and “Central Authority” and inadvertently absorbs the power-imbuing serum called “the Formula Maxima.”  Now, Ernie is the only thing standing between humanity and total Armageddon... because he has suddenly become the world's most powerful super-spy.

The Scumbag #5 opens in Scorpionus Mansion, the home of “The Prosoma,” the leader of the reactionary cabal, Scorpionus.  Sister Mary is kicking ass and stealing the information that will help her uncover Scorpionus' ultimate plan.  Meanwhile, Ernie Ray is all about making deals with the devil.  Their mission will take them to “Whole Green,” where Scorpionus makes cheap bio-fuel and hires poor people as employees.  What are they up to?  Well, both Sister Mary and Ernie Ray are in for some awful surprises.  Plus, Ernie Ray has to make a political decision!

THE LOWDOWN:  I didn't have a lot to say about The Scumbag #1.  I had a little more to say about The Scumbag #2.  I said that with The Scumbag #3 the series had hit its stride.  The Scumbag #4 offered some of series creator Rick Remender's sharpest political, social, and racial commentary yet.  The Scumbag #5 brings together all the interesting things that Remender has been doing with this series, thus far.

Yeah, Wes Craig's art seems like drawing it was a rush job, and Moreno Dinisio's colors looks smeared in places.  However, Remender's story and dialogue allow reactionary, right wing politics, white cultural chauvinism, unrestrained capitalism, American imperialism, white male disdain to have their say.  It's funny, but it's also scary.

I sometimes think that Scorpionus is the future of our United States, but I can laugh now because it's just a comic book.  And I recommend this comic book, The Scumbag.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Rick Remender, of mature comedy, and of reprobate-type anti-hero lead characters will want The Scumbag.

“Snowblower Indemnity” Part 4

The Scumbag is a comic book series from writer Rick Remender.  Described as a “comedy espionage series” by publisher Image Comics, The Scumbag's tagline reads, “The fate of the world rests in the hands of the worst person on it!”  The series features a rotating crew of illustrators.  Artist Eric Powell; colorist Moreno Dinisio; and letterer Rus Wooton complete the current creative team.

The Scumbag introduces Ernie Ray Clementine.  He is a rundown, raggedy, filthy man.

The Scumbag #4 opens in the sky in a flying car with Ernie Ray, Sister Mary, and “A.I. doll,” Pam.  They plan to infiltrate a party being thrown at the mansion of “The Prosoma,” leader of the reactionary cabal, Scorpionus.  However, “Mr. Prosoma” isn't clueless about his party being crashed, and he has an offer to make.

THE LOWDOWN:  I didn't have a lot to say about The Scumbag #1.  I had a little more to say about The Scumbag #2.  I said that with The Scumbag #3 the series had hit its stride.  The Scumbag #4 may offer some of Rick Remender's sharpest political, social, and racial commentary yet.

Remender distillates white privilege, the one percent, reactionary millionaires and billionaires, and the titans of industry, tech, and fossil fuels into one self-promoting asshole.  It is scary that there are people similar to Prosoma in the real world, but Remender has turned this type into a most excellent comic book villain.

Artist Eric Powell and colorist Moreno Dinisio have a field day with the orgy scenes; I'm still shocked.  And letterer Rus Wooton is quite good at lettering crazy talk, of which there is a lot.  We're approaching the end of the first story arc, so this is no time to stop reading The Scumbag.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Rick Remender, of mature comedy, and of reprobate-type anti-hero lead characters will want The Scumbag.

“Snowblower Indemnity” Part 3

The Scumbag is a new comic book series from writer Rick Remender.  Described as a “comedy espionage series” by publisher Image Comics, The Scumbag's tagline reads, “The fate of the world rests in the hands of the worst person on it!”  The series features a rotating crew of illustrators.  Thus, artist Eric Powell; colorist Moreno Dinisio; and letterer Rus Wooton complete the current creative team.

The Scumbag introduces Ernie Ray Clementine.  He is a rundown, raggedy, filthy man.

The Scumbag #3 opens on the roof the Sipkin Building.  There, “The Prosoma,” leader of reactionary cabal, Scorpionus, speechifies about his “Gold Bomb.”  When it detonates, this “alchemy bomb” will turn everyone in and around the Sipkin into solid gold – a bid to create enough gold to crash the world economy.  While super-agent, Sister Mary, fights Scorpionus' big white asshole, “The Ultra-Nationalist,” our hero, Ernie Ray, of course, struggles with golden temptation.

THE LOWDOWN:  I didn't have a lot to say about The Scumbag #1.  I had a little more to say about The Scumbag #2.  What I have to say about The Scumbag #3 is that the series has hit its stride; this third issue is the funniest issue, yet.

Eric Powell, creator, writer, and artist of The Goon comic books, is the artist for The Scumbag #3, but it makes no never mind – as the saying goes.  Don't get me wrong; Eric Powell is good at what he does.  Still, he does not distinguish himself from the series' previous two artists:  Lewis Larosa (#1) and Andrew Robinson (#2).  These artists have done good work, with Robinson and Powell managing to draw in a graphical style similar to Larosa's.

The star here is Rick Remender.  As I said before, I have enjoyed what few Rick Remender comic books I have read, and I have not read much.  However, his mix of political commentary and witty asides and his dialogue peppered with acerbic observations about our current social and cultural climate are … well, golden.  Plus, his super-spy/secret agent set pieces are as good as anything readers will find in one of the Kingsman movies.

Yeah, I could say that Remender is “killing it,” but I want to wait on that.  I will say that if the fourth issue is as good as or better than The Scumbag #3, then, no comic book readers looking for really “good comics” will be able to skip The Scumbag.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Rick Remender, of mature comedy, and of reprobate-type anti-hero lead characters will want The Scumbag.

The Scumbag is a new comic book series from writer Rick Remender.  Described as a “comedy espionage series” by publisher Image Comics, The Scumbag's tagline reads, “The fate of the world rests in the hands of the worst person on it!”  The series features a rotating crew of illustrators.  Thus, artist Andrew Robinson; colorist Moreno Dinisio; and letterer Rus Wooton complete the current creative team.

The Scumbag introduces Ernie Ray Clementine.  He is a rundown, raggedy, filthy man.  He is a profane, illiterate, drug-addicted biker and ne'er-do-well with a fifth-grade education.  But thanks to a power-imbuing serum called “the Formula Maxima,” Ernie will be the only thing standing between humanity and total Armageddon... because he has suddenly become the world's most powerful super-spy.

The Scumbag #2 opens in “Simon's” dive bar, where Ernie Ray is regaling people with his recent supernatural adventures, which he, of course, thinks are drug hallucinations.  Then, Sister Mary of “Central Authority” shows up and starts barking orders … and offering things that Ernie Ray likes.  Meanwhile, Scorpoinus and “The Prosoma” make their golden move, which leads to a … monsters of rock misunderstand.

THE LOWDOWN:  I didn't have a lot to say about The Scumbag #1.  I have more to say about The Scumbag #2.  I like this issue's art team of illustrator Andrew Robinson and colorist Moreno Dinisio, which delivers some pretty art and some fast-moving storytelling.  Rus Wooton's lively letters continue to capture the right vibe for each particular issue – this time, action-comedy.

As I said before, I have enjoyed what few Rick Remender comic books I have read, and I found myself enjoying The Scumbag #1.  I really wanted to be cynical about the first issue, but I had to admit that I liked it.  I like The Scumbag #2 even more.  After introducing the concept, Remender continues the introductions, but while reading the second issue, I got the feeling of a writer freed up to do a little more action.  This issue is a wild ride, and I kinda wish that Sister Mary was the star of this series.  The pace of this issue seems more suited for her to be the star.

I don't know about The Scumbag comic book being “the next Deadpool,” as some have speculated.  However, it has the potential to offer a brief respite from the traumas of the world with some regularly delivered salacious fun, and it has already started to do so.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Rick Remender, of mature comedy, and of reprobate-type anti-hero lead characters will want The Scumbag.

“Jazz Apple Armageddon,” Part One

The Scumbag is a new comic book series from writer Rick Remender and artist Lewis Larosa.  Described as a “comedy espionage series” by publisher, Image Comics, The Scumbag's tagline reads, “The fate of the world rests in the hands of the worst person on it!”  Colorist Moreno Dinisio and letterer Rus Wooton complete the book's creative team.

THE LOWDOWN:  I don't have a lot to say about The Scumbag #1.  I like the art team of Lewis Larosa and Moreno Dinisio, which delivers some pretty art.  These illustrations remind me of the painted comic book art found in some entries in the old “Marvel Comics Graphic Novels” line.  Rus Wooton's lively letters capture this series' comedy and spy-spoof humor.

I have enjoyed what few Rick Remender comic books I have read, and I find myself really enjoying The Scumbag #1.  No fan of Remender can afford to skip reading the first issue of The Scumbag, which some are speculating will be the next Deadpool.  That's all I have to say... except that I am determined to read The Scumbag #2.  I don't know about it being like Deadpool, but it has the potential to offer a brief respite from the traumas of the world with some regularly delivered salacious fun.
