Self-Professed Rodeo Clown is the Subject of Bluewater's Last "Political Power"

BLUEWATER BRINGS GLENN BECK'S SUCCESS STORY TO COMIC BOOKS

Love him or hate him, you can't deny that Glenn Beck is a major success story.

From his roots as a teen disc jockey to his position of influence today, Glenn Beck has taken an amazing journey through the world of the mass media. As a commentator and host on FOX News Channel and as the broadcaster behind his own nationally syndicated talk-radio show, Beck has become a leading voice of the country's Conservative and Evangelical movements.

Now Beck is taking yet another leap: He's set to star in his won biography comic from independent comics company Bluewater Productions.

Political Power: Glenn Beck will hit comic shops and online retailers in February. The 32-page comic retails for $3.99.

Jerome Maida, a frequent author of Bluewater's bio comics, wrote the script for Political Power: Glenn Beck. Mark Sparacio, a veteran artist who has worked with both Marvel Comics and DC Comics, provided the cover art for this comic. The interior art is being done by Aleksandar Bozic who also worked on the "Political Power: Bill O'Reilly" comic book.

Maida said that Beck was an “irresistible figure to write”.

“We all know how successful, powerful and influential he is today. What I was interested in was what made him that way”, said Maida. “Here is someone who was so supremely talented he was working in radio and winning fans since he was 13. At the same time, he has had a very troubled and tragic life. So it was fascinating detailing how he overcame that to get to where he is today.”

“It's not a typical sad story because in the end the bio reveals that the prevailing theme in Glenn's life is redemption. Which I feel those on either side of the political aisle will find compelling”, said Maida.

Bluewater president and founder Darren Davis said that Beck is the perfect subject for a comic biography: He's a figure who's risen from obscurity to challenge such talk-show icons as Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly for media supremacy.

“We try to focus on figures that bring out a lot of passion for our biographies,” Davis said. “Glenn Beck certainly does that. Whether you like his politics or you find them reprehensible, you most certainly have an opinion about him. I'm sure a lot of readers will want to know how the Glenn Beck surge got its start. This comic will show them.”

Bluewater's biography comics have been covered by such mainstream media outlets as the Washington Post, New York Times and Forbes Magazine. By covering such celebrities and political leaders as Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, Sarah Palin and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Bluewater is bringing new readers to the comics world.

The company produces three lines of biography comics: Female Force, Political Power and Fame. Each line has produced comics that have sold out of their original runs at a time in which independent comics companies are struggling to gain an audience.

To pre-order the “Political Power: Glenn Beck” comic go to your local comic book store or you can order it online at TFAW here http://bit.ly/e2VaJH

In stores in January is “Political Power: Bill O'Reilly” and can be pre-ordered here: http://bit.ly/fACXsS

Bluewater also produces a wide range of fiction titles, everything from superhero stories to horror, young-adult and science fiction titles.

Female Force Returns to Sarah Palin

SARAH PALIN RETURNS TO BLUEWATER'S PAGES IN NEW COMIC BOOK

Bluewater Productions made headlines in 2008 when its Sara Palin biography comic sold out. Now Palin is returning to Bluewater with a sequel.

Female Force: Sarah Palin, Act 2 focuses on Palin's life after the 2008 presidential elections. The book examines the reasons behind Palin's increasing celebrity, and the threat that she might pose to both Democrats and mainstream Republicans should she decide to run in 2012.

“You can't help but admire Sarah Palin for her tenacity and her ability to find the spotlight wherever she goes,” says Dan Rafter, the writer behind Female Force: Sarah Palin, Act 2. “The reaction she received for her big Tea Party speech is just one example of the passion that Palin ignites in her fans. It's hard for me to imagine someone like Mitt Romney generating that kind of electricity.”

Female Force: Sarah Palin, Act 2 will be available at comic shops and from online retailers such as Amazon.com in December. The 32-page issue features interior art from Nathan Carson.

Darren G. Davis, president and founder of Bluewater Productions, said that only a small number of the celebrities and politicians that the comics company has profiled merit sequels. Singer Lady Gaga will join Palin in getting her sequel later this year.

“You just can't ignore Sarah Palin,” Davis said. “Even those who'd never vote for her can't deny that the woman has an amazing charisma. She can get away with missteps that other politicians can't afford to make.”

As an example, the Bluewater comic references the speech in which Palin had jotted notes on her palm. Her critics savaged her. But Palin, much like Ronald Reagan did throughout his political career, used humor to turn a potential mistake into a victory when she showed up at a later speech with the words “Hi, Mom” written on her palm.

Bluewater Productions has generated a steady stream of press for its biography comics. These often controversial works have gotten Bluewater's name into everything from the New York Times to USA Today.

The comic company's biography titles, carried under the Female Force, Political Power and Fame banners, are not the only comics that Bluewater produces. The company also publishes superhero, science fiction, horror and young adult comics. Many of these comics, including Nanny & Hank, a tale of elderly vampires, have received critical raves.

"Female Force: Sarah Palin: The Sequel" can currently be ordered at bookstores and comic book shops. To find a comic book store near you go to http://www.comicshoplocator.com/. It is also available online on Amazon by clicking here: http://amzn.to/dlhvsk. It retails for $3.99 a copy and hits shelves in December.

Also being released this week is a comic book biography called “First Families: The Clintons”. This special edition comic book featuring the first family biographies is now together for the first time in this 48-page one shot.

Both the Female Force and Political Power biography comic book series strive to present even-handed stories of prominent individuals responsible for shaping the political and cultural landscape.

Glenn Beck's "I Have a Dream" Speech

From Truthdig by Arthur Blaustein:

I have a dream that the Yalie son of a Houston oil magnate can walk hand in hand with the daughter of a Wall Street hedge fund operator on the white sands of Southampton while evading inheritance taxes.

I have a dream that from the glorious Pacific to the bountiful Atlantic the Castro will become gayless and Greenwich Village will become free of feminism.

Bluewater's "Political Power" Focuses on Senator Al Franken

SENATOR AL FRANKEN TO GET COMIC BOOK TREATMENT IN MAY

It's hard to remember, but there was a time when Al Franken was just a comic and writer. Today, though, he is a rising political star.

Franken is also set to become the latest subject in Bluewater Productions' Political Power line of biography comics. Political Power: Al Franken will be released to comic shops across the country in May 2009.

Franken made history in 2008, when he defeated Republican incumbent Norm Coleman to become the junior U.S. Senator from Minnesota. Of course, this victory did not come easily. In a race that was decided by a razor-thin margin and involved a recount and several appeals, all the way to the Minnesota Supreme Court, which ruled in Franken's favor. Franken was finally sworn in on July 7, 2009 after Coleman declined to take the controversial case to the U.S. Supreme Court and instead conceded after a hard-fought, eight-month ordeal.

Political Power: Al Franken will trace the Senator's rise from Saturday Night Live writer, a position he often used to skewer politicians, to radio talk show host to viable Senate candidate.

Writer Jerome Maida said that the comic might introduce readers to sides of Franken's character that most of them did not know he possessed.

“Al Franken has this reputation - not completely unfounded, if you read the comic - as a metaphorical bomb-thrower, a guy who hates his enemies and has an in-your-face style,” Maida said. “While I did find some stuff that would support that perception, I also found out a lot more interesting stuff that makes him a real person, a character instead of a caricature.”

Maida, for instance, discovered that Franken first fell in love with politics at a young age. He also discovered that Franken co-wrote the powerful film When a Man Loves a Woman, a movie based on his wife's alcoholism.

Bluewater's Political Power line has attracted mainstream publicity and strong sales. The company's comics featuring Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama and Ted Kennedy have all generated strong sales in a declining comic book market. The goal of these biography comics is simple: Tell moving stories of politically powerful individuals in an evenhanded and balanced way.

“At a time in which comic book readership continues to decline, our Political Power books continue to bring new readers to the graphic medium,” said Darren G. Davis, president of Bluewater Productions. “I'm proud of that. And I think our readers will find that Jerome has crafted a compelling tale in Political Power: Al Franken.”

The new comic will retail for $3.99.

Because God Don't Sleep: Anti-Gay Politician Busted Being Gay

A state senator from Southern California was arrested for allegedly driving drunk after leaving Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento, early Wednesday morning.

The California Highway Patrol pulled over Senator Roy Ashburn at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday, after an officer noticed a black Chevy Tahoe swerving at 13th and L Streets. The Sacramento County district attorney says ... Ashburn's blood-alcohol level was .14 percent, when he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving near the Capitol.

Ashburn, a father of four ... has a history of opposing gay rights. Ashburn served six years as a state assemblyman before being elected to the state senate. According to Project Vote Smart, Ashburn's voting record shows he has voted against every gay rights measure in the State Senate since taking office, including Recognizing Out-Of-State Same-Sex Marriages, Harvey Milk Day and Expanding Anti-Discrimination Laws.

Mean Old Negro President Disses Sanctified Tony Perkins

On Tuesday, March 2nd, there will be a National Prayer Luncheon at Andrews Air Force Base.  Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, was slated to attend, but now he's saying that he was uninvited.  Perkins claims he was uninvited because he opposes President Obama's support for ending the "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy on gay and lesbian service people surving in the military.

Perkins released a statement full of his usual blowhard rantings:

"I am very concerned," Perkins said in a statement, "that this merely foreshadows the serious threat to religious liberty that would result from repeal of the current military eligibility law. Such legislation would not merely open the military to homosexuals. It would result in a zero-tolerance policy toward those who disapprove of homosexual conduct."

"Military chaplains would bear the heaviest burden. Would their sermons be censored to prevent them from preaching on biblical passages which describe homosexual conduct as a sin? Would they remain free to counsel soldiers troubled by same-sex attractions about the spiritual and psychological resources available to overcome those attractions? Any chaplain who holds to the millennia-old tradition of Judeo-Christian sexual morality could be denied promotion, or even be forced out of the military altogether."

Politics Daily has the full story.  I'm sure Obama will get the blame for this uninvite.  I'm guessing the organizers believed that they couldn't trust Perkins not to use the luncheon to spew his Chistian bigotry... I mean Christian views.  Perkins even said that ending "Don't ask, Don't tell would "force soldiers to cohabit with people who view them as sexual objects [and] would inevitably lead to increased sexual tension, sexual harassment, and even sexual assault."

Negro, please! Church people start more hell...

Pat Robertson Theatre Presents the Voodoo Curse of Haiti

The ceremony allegedly involved the sacrifice of a pig and use of pig blood and a sermon that invoked the good God of African religion to give the slaves liberty and condemned the evil God of the white slave-owners.

The above quote comes from a Juan Cole blog entry, and a very good one, about Pat Robertson's recent comments on "cursed Haiti."

Robert Parry on the New Year

Robert Parry of Consortium News (via Truthout) offers this excellent essay, "What the New Year Demands."  I agree with his assessment - that the progressive movement needs to build media that matches both the right wing and mainstream media, in size, scope, and influence.

Maybe this is the Health Care Bill the President Wanted...

This Truthout Joe Conason op-ed focuses its ire on Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) and his obstructionist activities concerning the Health Care overhaul. What Conason should ask - is a health care bill stripped of most of its progressive measures what President Obama really wanted?

Truthout Asks, Veterans Day or Rulers Day?

In a Truthout op-ed, writer Bob Richards takes a look at the propaganda of Veterans Day. Here, are some highlights:

If you want to thank anyone for your rights and freedoms, thank an activist. No soldier ended segregation in the 1960's. No sailor got women the vote. No National Guardsman got you the 40-hour week or took children off the shop floors or out of the mines. No, they were called out by the states to kill the very people who were fighting for the rights they eventually won for you.

So, here we are at war to get Unocal's dream pipeline route across Afghanistan secured and prop up that ex-Unocal employee's stolen election. Then there's still that war we don't talk about so much anymore. The one that the lie to get us in there changed nearly every day, when the truth may have been as simple as the Decider told us himself, that Saddam tried to kill his daddy, and that he would use that war for his own ends.

I was formerly acquainted with a combat vet who held similar opinions about the celebration of Veterans Day.

Ain't Nuthin' But a Man

So when President Barack Obama was in New Orleans, he spoke to a receptive audience. 4th-grader Tyren Scott asked him, "Why do people hate you? And why, aren't they supposed to love you, if God is love?"

Now, the answer is that many of the people who "hate" President Obama are just racist, embittered trash or slimy GOP retards. However, the President told him:

"...I'm a pretty tough guy. Are you a tough guy? You look pretty tough. So you've just got to keep going on going, even when folks are criticizing you, when you know you're doing it for other people."

Something is Really Wrong with These GOPeople - An I Reads You Juniors Special

At a weekly GOP meeting, held at a gun range, of all places, Republican candidate, Robert Lowry, took shots at a target upon which the initials of his opponent - DWS (for Debbie Wasserman Schultz) - were scrawled. Other targets included those made to resemble gunmen wearing traditional Arab head scarves, the kaffiyeh.

The Illumi-Nation: Common Nobel Peace Prize Misconceptions

The Associated Press via Yahoo! News provides the following list of misconceptions about the Nobel Peace Prize:

An award that generates as much interest as the Nobel Peace Prize is bound to be surrounded by myths. Geir Lundestad, secretary of the secretive committee that awards the prize, outlines for The Associated Press some of the most common misunderstandings:

• Myth: The awards committee announces a shortlist of candidates.
The committee does not release the names of any candidates and keeps records sealed for 50 years.

• Myth: A campaign for a particular candidate can sway the awards committee.
A campaign could have the exact opposite effect on the fiercely independent committee, which does not want to appear influenced by public pressure.

• Myth: Candidates can be nominated until the last minute.
The nomination deadline is eight months before the announcement, with a strictly enforced deadline of Feb. 1.

• Myth: Anyone can nominate a person or group for the Peace Prize.
No, although Nobel statutes on who can nominate were slightly broadened in 2003. They now include former laureates; current and former members of the committee and their staff; members of national governments and legislatures; university professors of law, theology, social sciences, history and philosophy; leaders of peace research and foreign affairs institutes; and members of international courts of law.

• Myth: The prize can be revoked if a laureate does not live up to the standards of the peace prize.
There are no provisions for revoking the prize.

• Myth: The prize can be awarded posthumously.
The prize was award posthumously only once — in 1961, to former U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammerskjold, after he was killed in a plane crash in Africa. The rules were amended in 1974 to prohibit posthumous prizes.

• Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.
More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

RNC Chair Michael Steele Determined to Prove that He is a Good House Nigga

The real question Americans are asking is, “What has President Obama actually accomplished?” It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain — President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.

Colored Republican National Committe Chairman Michael Steele issued the above statement about President Barack Obama receiving the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

President Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

The complete text for the citation awarding President Obama the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, as provided by the Associated Press:

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts.

The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.
For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

A Man Crush Gone too Far?

Apparently Black male supermodel Tyson Beckford was on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live," and someone called in to the show to ask him, "If you had to spend the night with a man, who would it be and why?" This is how he answered the question:

"I don't actually go that way, though I notice a lot of people think I do. But umm, you know what, if Imma do it, I'm going for [Barack] Obama. If I got with him, I could run the country. If I was that way, Obama, I'd be gunning for you brother! I'd be the one in control. That's if I was that way. Who you gonna go for? Will Smith? Somebody pretty like that? Not to say Obama's not pretty. But I'd go straight for Obama because you got power then. You could run red lights and just wild out. And I'd have Michelle [Obama] hold the camera!"

Congressman Joe Wilson's Neo-Confederate Past

In "Joe Wilson's Dixie Partisans," writer Joe Conason at Truthout offers a deeper perspective on U.S. House of Representatives member Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), now infamous for shouting "You lie" to President Barack Obama during his recent speech before a joint session of Congress. Conason's article lends credence to those who have claimed that Wilson is bigot.

Highlights:

Nothing surprising there, however, to anyone familiar with the Wilson entourage and outlook. The consultant behind the excitable right-wing congressman is Richard Quinn, long a central figure in both South Carolina Republican politics and the "neo-Confederate" movement, notably as editor and publisher of a periodical called The Southern Partisan.

Long before Quinn started selling those Joe Wilson tees, his magazine used to market T-shirts denigrating Abraham Lincoln, which displayed a portrait of him above the slogan "Sic Semper Tyrannis" - the phrase shouted by John Wilkes Booth after shooting the Civil War president. No doubt Quinn considered that to be an expression of "patriotism," too, although not to the United States of America.

Ku Klux Klowns, indeed

Truthout's William Rivers Pitt offers his usual excellent, pithy writing in his essay, Ku Klux Klown. It's about that ridiculous 9/12 rally, anti-tax (really anti-Black President ) protest put together by corporate pimp, Dick Armey, and championed by sobriety trainwreck, Glenn Beck.

Highlights:

Well, nobody said you have to be smart in order to become a hero to the far right. In fact, it helps to be dumber than a sack of hair, if only to match wits with the kind of people who were marching this weekend holding signs that read "Bury Obamacare With Kennedy." Stay classy, GOP.

Frum was being nice, actually, because he knows better than anyone what took place in Washington this weekend. It was a Klan rally minus the bedsheets and torches. These people don't even have enough shame to hide their faces anymore. If more Republicans like Frum don't come forward to denounce such activities from their right flank, that right flank is going to finish the job of taking over the GOP, and hard as it is to believe, this kind of obnoxious craziness is going to seem quaint by comparison to what will be coming next.
