“The Best”

Generations is the currently ongoing 10-issue anthology, weekly comic book series published by Marvel Comics.  Each issue is written and drawn by a different creative team, and each issue will feature a different team-up of a classic Marvel superhero with his or her modern-day counterpart.  The series is meant to unite the legacy of classic Marvel Comics characters with the next generation of heroes as both move into the future of Marvel Comics storytelling.

The third issue is Generations: Wolverine & All-New Wolverine, which brings together the classic Wolverine/Logan of X-Men fame and his clone-daughter, the All-New Wolverine, Laura Kinney.  This comic book is written by Tom Taylor; drawn by Ramon Rosanas; colored by Nolan Woodard; and lettered by Cory Petit.

Generations: Wolverine & All-New Wolverine #1 (“The Best”) opens in Tokyo, Japan. Wolverine is cutting his way through a horde of The Hand's zombie ninja.  They stand between him and his kidnapped daughter, Akiko.  There is a problem, however; Wolverine is about to lose and die.  Suddenly, in steps a young woman, unknown to Wolverine, but wearing familiar clothes and also bearing metal claws.  This Wolverine-like young woman is different, but like Logan, she is the best at what she does.  Two Wolverines will need to be the best if they are to survive an old enemy.

The purpose of Generations: Banner Hulk & Totally Awesome Hulk #1 was for Bruce Banner to tell the Totally Awesome Hulk/Amadeus Cho that he would not be able to escape all the tragic aspects of the curse of the Hulk.  Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey found two women reluctant and/or incapable of telling each other everything they knew about the curse of The Phoenix

Generations: Wolverine & All-New Wolverine #1 is mainly just a slice-and-dice Wolverine adventure featuring the classic Wolverine and the All-New Wolverine.  It is, however, a well-executed Wolverine slice-and-dice story via the efforts of writer Tom Taylor and artist Ramos Rosanas.  The only creators who could have done better than Taylor-Rosanas are some combination of Frank Miller, Klaus Janson, and David Mazzuchelli; the team of Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.; and finally Barry Windsor-Smith by himself.

I could have done without the mushy stuff at the end.  Part of me wants Marvel to let Wolverine be Wolverine.  That would be the stone cold killer of the early “new” X-Men of the mid-1970s, and not the Logan softened from being part of the X-Men family and by the tragedy of Jean Grey/The Phoenix.  That said, I like this action-packed, violent fight comic and its surprising guest appearance.

“The Phoenix”

Generations is a ten-issue anthology, weekly comic book series published by Marvel Comics.  Each issue is written and drawn by a different creative team, and each issue will feature a different team-up of a classic Marvel superhero with his or her modern-day counterpart.  The series is meant to unite the legacy of classic Marvel Comics characters with the next generation of heroes, as both move into the future of Marvel Comics storytelling.

The second issue of this series is Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey.  This stand-alone story brings together two versions of Marvel Girl/Jean Grey.  First is the young Jean Grey of the original X-Men, who was brought to the future/present and stranded there beginning in the series, All-New X-Men (written by Brian Michael Bendis).  The second is The Phoenix/Jean Grey, the version of the character that came into existence in X-Men #101 (cover dated:  October 1976) when Jean was possessed by the nigh-all-powerful cosmic entity, the “Phoenix Force.”  This entry in the Generations series is written by Cullen Bunn; drawn by R.B. Silva and Adriano Di Benedetto; colored by Rain Beredo; and lettered by Travis Lanham.

Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey #1 (“The Phoenix”) opens as young Jean Grey finds herself somewhere she shouldn't be – another world.  After a short walk, she discovers a beach and an older version of herself sunning on the beach.  Jean knows that this older Jean is “The Phoenix.”  Young Jean knows that the Phoenix Force is coming for her (in fact, it already is back in her world).  Now, is the time to ask questions about the Phoenix, but older Jean seems reluctant to tell.  Plus, Jean Grey/The Phoenix suspects that young Jean knows something about her fate – something terrible.  Plus, three classic Marvel Comics cosmic entities guest star.

I wanted to be cynical, but I really enjoyed Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey.  Writer Cullen Bunn makes young Jean Grey ask Jean Grey/The Phoenix ALL the questions she should.  Older Jean Grey should be annoyed, but Bunn depicts her as reticent and troubled.  Bunn's approach not only makes this issue of Generations intriguing, but also makes the current ongoing Jean Grey series seem like a comic book that should be read (and yes, you should be reading it.)

The art team of Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey – R.B. Silva, Adriano Di Benedetto, and Rain Beredo – deliver some gorgeous art, and the storytelling is quite good.  The character scenes are dramatic and even a little poignant and maybe even sad, and the action scenes come across as something a little different – or different enough from standard X-Men franchise fare.  In fact, the art in Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey reminds me of the best of Stuart Immonen and company in one of the few high-quality recent X-Men comic books, All-New X-Men (2012),

So Generations: Phoenix & Jean Grey #1, the second entry in the Generations series, is the best so far.  If the Generations to come are better than this one, the entire series will end up being more than just another cynical Marvel editorial ploy

Hulk created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee

“The Strongest”

Generations is a ten-issue anthology, weekly comic book series published by Marvel Comics.  Each issue is written and drawn by a different creative team, and each issue will feature a different team-up of a classic Marvel superhero with his or her modern-day counterpart.  The series is meant to unite the legacy of classic Marvel Comics characters with the next generation of heroes as both move into the future of Marvel Comics storytelling.

The first issue is Generations: Banner Hulk & Totally Awesome Hulk which brings together the classic Hulk who is Bruce Banner and the new Totally Awesome Hulk, who is the genius Amadeus Cho.  This comic book is written by Greg Pak; drawn by Matteo Buffagni; colored by Dono Sanchez-Almara; and lettered by Cory Petit.

Generations: Banner Hulk & Totally Awesome Hulk #1 (“The Strongest”) opens as Amadeus Cho, the Hulk, lands in Death Valley.  He was just in Washington D.C., so why is he here?  It must be to meet that other Hulk, not but several yards from him and fighting a pitched battle against a heavily-armed military unit.  These soldiers are throwing everything at this Hulk, who turns out to be Banner Hulk, but isn't Bruce Banner dead?!

Halfway through Generations: Banner Hulk & Totally Awesome Hulk #1, I thought, “What's the point of this?”  Most of this comic book is one huge battle that occasionally shifts settings or adds a new player.  At some point in the story, the point Greg Pak is trying to make becomes clear.  There may be a new Hulk, but he can't escape the legacy of the original Hulk.

Bruce Banner has a message for Amadeus Cho, something along the lines of “Young blood, you don't know me, and you know the Hulk even less.”  Maybe, Marvel Comics is sticking by its new Totally Awesome Hulk.  [Cue the diversity complaints!]  Still, the classic Hulk's conflicts, motivations, dilemmas, trials and tribulations remain.  Amadeus Cho Hulk has 99 problems and the Hulk is all of them, or, at least, time will tell.

So Generations: Banner Hulk & Totally Awesome Hulk #1 is not a pointless event comic book, cynically meant to separate gullible fans from their money.  The fan can be a reader this time.  This is not a great comic book by any means, but it bridges the past and the future in a way that genuinely speaks to what is unique about our favorite incredible, rampaging, rage monster, the Hulk.
