“Journey to the Ghost Planet”

Space Ghost is a superhero character created by the American animation studio and production company, Hanna-Barbera Productions.  The character first appeared in the Saturday morning cartoon series, “Space Ghost,” which was originally broadcast on CBS from September 1966 to September 1967 for 20 episodes.

In his original incarnation, Space Ghost was a superhero whose base of operations was a small world known as “Ghost Planet.”  He fought super-villains in outer space with his teen sidekicks, Jan and Jace, and their monkey, Blip.  His main weapons were power bands he wore around his wrists and lower arms; the bands fired off multiple energy beam-based attacks, including heat, cold, and force, to name a few.  Space Ghost could also fly, survive in space, and turn invisible (his “Inviso Power”).  He also had a space ship known as “the Phantom Cruiser.”

Space Ghost sporadically appeared in various comic book publications over a fifty year period.  Dynamite Entertainment has just launched a new Space Ghost comic book as part of its licensing agreement with Warner Bros.  Entitled Space Ghost Volume 1, it is written by David Pepose; drawn by Jonathan Lau; colored by Andrew Dalhouse; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  In the new series, twins Jan and Jace Keplar and their pet monkey, Blip, meet that legendary cosmic vigilante known as “the Space Ghost.”

Space Ghost Volume 1 #2 (“Journey to the Ghost Planet”) opens in the past on the planet, Vector.  Here, we see glimpses of the tragedy that would turn a man into “Space Ghost.”

Space Ghost, Jan, Jace, and Blip travel aboard the Phantom Cruiser to Space Ghost's base of operations, “Ghost Planet.”  The kids soon grow bored, as the mysterious vigilante mostly focuses on his work.  Left to their own devices, the kids do their own thing, which includes an unexpected flight in the Phantom Cruiser.  Now, it's up to Jan to save the day, but can she come up with a way to save her brother, Jace, and Blip... and maybe help out the Ghost, too?

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  Space Ghost Volume 1 #2 is the latest, but it is not the first Space Ghost comic book that I have read.

I remain very happy about this new Space Ghost series.  The first issue was about re-introductions of classic characters and introductions of their new versions.  The first chapter was a little chaotic and a little thin on plot.  This second issue, which is stronger, does a deep dive into the possibilities of Jan and Jace and Blip becoming a working part of Space Ghost's life as a cosmic vigilante.  With this second issue, writer David Pepose perfectly captures the spirit of wonder and fantasy that was the original Space Ghost animated series, and it is a delight.

Jonathan Lau's illustrations and Andrew Dalhouse's colors make for a gritty narrative, but they also turn Pepose's script into the perfect Space Ghost storytelling.  Whatever Lau and Dalhouse did well the first issue, they go nova on it with this second issue.  It is pop comics with a sort of moodiness which seems like a touch of Batman.  Also, Taylor Esposito's lettering is classic comics cool, which serves the spirit of Space Ghost quite well.

I highly recommend Space Ghost Volume 1.  It is easily one of the best comic book media adaptations that I have read in years, dear readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Dynamite Entertainment's Warner Bros. comic book series will want to read Space Ghost Volume 1.

The issues continues from the Jonny Quest FCBD Special that came out in May during Free Comic Book Day 2024.  Team Quest returns to their home on the island of Key Palm, where things are not quite what they're supposed to be...

Writer Joe Casey, artist Sebastian Piriz, colorist Lorenzo Scaramella, and letterer Taylor Esposito summon the classic “Jonny Quest” cool.  That is that it looks that way in this four-page preview.  Well, I feel it, dear readers, and I'm ready for more.

#IReadsYou Review: X-MEN: FIRST CLASS - Tomorrow's Brightest

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS – TOMORROW’S BRIGHTEST
MARVEL COMICS

STORY: Jeff Parker
PENCILS: Roger Cruz with Paul Smith
INKS: Victor Olazaba & Roger Cruz with Paul Smith
COLORS: Val Staples
LETTERS: Nate Piekos
COVER: Marko Djurdjevic
ISBN: 978-0-7851-2426-8; hardcover (January 1, 2007)
192pp, Color, $24.99 U.S.

Recently, I posted a review of Zootopia Volume 1 #1, the first issue of Dynamite Entertainment's new comic book series based on Disney's Oscar-winning, animated film, Zootopia (2016).  The comic book is written by Jeff Parker, and because I enjoyed the first issue, I started thinking about other comics by Parker that I have read and reviewed.

One of them is the hardcover trade collection of Marvel Comic's 2006 miniseries, X-Men: First Class.  I wrote a review of it back in 2007 or 2008 for a website run by an ungrateful asshole.  So I'm reclaiming the review for my own blog, “I Reads You.”

Here, it is with some recent edits. - Leroy Douresseaux:

When I first started reading the 2007 Marvel Comics hardcover collection, X-Men: First Class – Tomorrow’s Brightest, I initially thought, “Marvel doesn’t make comics like this anymore.”  Then, I realized that they do – under the “Marvel Adventures” line for young readers – and if you like that line, then, this fantastic, old school-style X-Men comic book collection is just for you.

X-Men: First Class – Tomorrow's Brightest collects X-Men: First Class #1-8, an eight-issue miniseries originally published in 2006.  The series is set during the early years of the X-Men when the team still consisted on the original X-Men: Cyclops (Scott Summers), Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Angel (Warren Worthington, III), Beast (Hank McCoy), and Iceman (Bobby Drake).  These young people are mutants, genetic anomalies born with superhuman abilities that usually manifest themselves at puberty.

This quintet attended Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, where Professor Charles Xavier a.k.a. “Professor X” taught them to use their powers.  However, this school is also something of a military academy, as the students are taught to use their powers to protect humans from evil mutants and other forces that seek to harm humanity.  Like superheroes, the X-Men wear special costumes and masks (to hide their identities).

In X-Men: First Class, the X-Men seem to be college age.  In Marvel Comics continuity, these stories apparently take place after X-Men #18 (cover date: March 1966) when Magneto was spirited off-world by a mysterious character knows as “The Stranger.”  [This incident is mentioned in X-Men: First Class #7, which is reprinted as “Chapter 7” in this collection.]

X-Men: First Class is basically a modernization of stories and plots found in the run of X-Men comic books published in the 1960s.  Writer Jeff Parker takes the same characters, stories, and concepts and sets them in the 21st century.  Like the original X-Men comics, X-Men: First Class is basically a comic book series meant for young readers – especially ‘tweens (8 to 12-years-old or 9 to 14).  X-Men: First Class is nothing like the main X-Men comics, especially the flagship Uncanny X-Men, which are much darker, even fatalistic in tone, and have been for some time.  These stories tend towards science fiction, and are like a mix of juvenile sci-fi and fantasy.

These stories feature guest appearances by a number of Marvel Comics characters, including The Lizard (a Spider-Man villain), Doctor Strange, Thor, and a young team of Skrulls (an adversarial race from the Fantastic Four comics).  There are also appearances by Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch (brother and sister mutants who were once X-Men adversaries) and Gorilla-Man (an obscure Silver Age character).

THE LOWDOWN:  While Jeff Parker’s writing will not shatter or transform the X-Men the way Grant Morrison did in New X-Men about 8 earlier, it is closer in spirit to the X-Men stories that provided the foundation for writers like Morrison to come along and do their trashing, rebuilding, and/or re-imagining.  These X-Men” First Class comic books feature the kind of highly enjoyable stories that once served the industry well – superhero comics that could be casually read.

Now, it seems that to read any one Marvel or DC Comics’ series requires a sizable investment of time and money and a major investment in either of these publishers’ labyrinthine continuities and myriad universes and timelines.  We also may not mistake Jeff Parker's comic book writing for that of Alan Moore, whose shadow has loomed large over American comic book writing, beginning with his landmark work on DC’s Swamp Thing series.  Then again, no one will mistake Moore for Parker.  Parker tells the kind of imaginative and luminous stories that not only capture the spirit of what made and what still makes the X-Men attractive to readers, but also, he can capture our sense of wonder by transporting us to incredible adventures in far away places.

POSSIBLE AUDIENCE:  For any readers who yearn for the X-Men comic books of the 1960s and 70s or for anyone who wants to introduce the X-Men to new readers, X-Men: First Class: Tomorrow's Brightest is for them.

#IReadsYou Review: SINS OF THE SALTON SEA #2

SINS OF THE SALTON SEA #2 (OF 5)
AWA STUDIOS

STORY: Ed Brisson
ART: C.P. Smith
COLORS: C.P. Smith
LETTERS: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
COVER: Tim Bradstreet
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Francisco Francavilla; Chris Ferguson
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (July 2023)

Rated: “Mature”

Sins of the Salton Sea is a new five-issue comic book miniseries from writer Ed Brisson and artist C.P. Smith.  Published by AWA Studios, the series focuses on a professional thief who finds himself protecting lives rather than collecting the money he was promised.  Letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou completes the series creative team.

Sins of the Salton Sea introduces Wyatt, a professional thief living off the grid.  His brother, Jasper, convinces him to join his crew for one of those proverbial “last big scores.”  What Walt scores is one human sacrifice and a war among factions of a doomsday cult.

Sins of the Salton Sea #2 opens in Oroville, CA.  Wyatt finds himself in possession of Madison and her son, Silver.  However, Madison's ex-husband, Cecil Currier, wants possession of them both, especially of the boy.  Now, Cecil believes he has something that Wyatt wants, and if Wyatt doesn't cooperate, all hell will break loose.

THE LOWDOWN:  AWA Studios' marketing recently began providing me with PDF review copies of their comic book publications.  Sins of the Salton Sea #2 is the latest.

I didn't have a lot to say about the first issue of Sins of the Salton Sea, but it was a damn good read.  Writer Ed Brisson offered a tale that suddenly blew up in the reader's face, leaving everything changed and the direction of the story totally different from what the reader expected.  There is more of that this second issue.  Brisson teases out just enough information and terse drama and tight suspense to make us chase him to this issue's shocking finale.

At the star of the series, artist-colorist, C.P. Smith, depicted the West in true grand fashion with a clean compositional style and panels that feel wide and cinematic.  Now, as the ultra-violence is kicking off, Smith brings in a cinematic storytelling style that is at once widescreen, but also close and intimate – even in those moments that make you, dear readers, want to pull away for the tough stuff.

Smith's colors, however, give the story a deeply intimate feel.  Not only the drama, but also the action scenes bring the readers up close and personal.  I felt like I was there and in trouble with everyone else.

I highly recommend Sins of the Salton Sea #2.  At the start, it promised a lot for the rest of this series, and this second issue delivers on all potentials and promises.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of action thrillers and conspiracies will want to try Sins of the Salton Sea.
