Short Story Review: “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”

WE CAN REMEMBER IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE
A short story by Philip K. Dick - Reviewed by Leroy Douresseaux on Patreon.

We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” is a science fiction short story written by the late author Philip K. Dick and first published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (April 1966 issue). The story has been republished several times in book collections, most recently in Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick (2002), which is where I read it (although I first read this story in another book collection back in the 1990s).

“We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” was loosely adapted into the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film, Total Recall, which was directed by Paul Verhoeven. That film is the subject of a 2012 remake starring Colin Farrell and directed by Len Wiseman.

“We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” takes place sometime in an indeterminate future in which humans have traveled to Mars and colonized the planet. The story hints or suggests that some of the rest of the solar system has also been visited by humans and perhaps colonized.

The story focuses on Douglas Quail, a nobody clerk and salaried employee. Quail yearns to travel to Mars the way other men might yearn to bed a pageant queen. His wife, a harpy-type named Kirsten, is not interested in traveling to Mars, but does agree that her wimpy husband needs adventure. Quail knows that he cannot afford a trip to Mars, which is expensive, not to mention that few people are even allowed to visit the planet.

Quail visits Rekal Incorporated, a company that offers “extra-factual memory implants.” These memories, which are implanted into the customer’s brain, are more real than real memories because implanted memories don’t fade away. Quail’s extra-factual memory package includes an adventure on Mars in which he is an agent for the Interplan Police Agency. However, something goes wrong during the memory implant, when Rekal discovers that there is more to Quail’s memories than they or even he realized.

I’ve found Philip K. Dick to be one of the most imaginative science fiction authors (and one of the most imaginative authors, in general) that I have ever encountered. I think his best work is found in his novels, but in his short stories, Dick presented seemingly countless inventive scenarios.

“We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” presents a familiar theme in Dick’s work: how the human mind struggles with shifting realities. Usually, a lead character will find himself trying to discern which is the real reality or which is his reality. Another familiar theme is man vs. bureaucracy or man vs. man (individual or organized) that act in opposition to the protagonist. In this story, Quail’s desires and yearnings to both visit Mars and to have a more fulfilling life runs up against the reality of a disapproving wife, his finances, Rekal, and Interplan.

I don’t want to spoil this story for anyone who has not yet read it or who have read it and don’t remember the details. However, I must say that the scenes in which the Rekal operatives find themselves confronted by the secrets Quail’s memories hold make this story worth reading. It is classic Philip K. Dick – the little guy fighting and even striking back at the forces gathered against him.

Negromancer Reviews "The Amazing Spider-Man"

I forgot to mention this in a post last week:  I reviewed the new Spider-Man reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man at my blog, Negromancer.

Keeping with this theme of forgetfulness, I neglected to mention James Horner's lush and rich score for the film.  At times, the music is playful, reminding me of Danny Elfman (who scored Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films), and other times it is poignant and moving for the intimate character scenes.  Horner's music pounds, sweeps, and soars for the superhero action scenes.  Horner establishes the mood and atmosphere and accentuates the action without taking over the movie.  Good stuff from a great film composer.

"Black Dynamite" the Movie Screens to Promote Black Dynamite Comic Book

The Crest: Black Dynamite Screening

ASR Innertainment to host film screening of Black Dynamite to promote Black Dynamite Comic Book from Ape Entertainment

April 13, 2011: Released in 2009, Black Dynamite quickly became a cult smash and received a comic book treatment from Ars Nova and Ape Entertainment. Black Dynamite: Slave Island, everyone’s favorite Blaxploitation sensation will appear in a one-shot, bringing his Kung-Fu fighting skills in this sequential page as he shuts down the mysterious island where Black slavery still exists.

“Fans of the film will feel right at home with the comic,” states Ape Entertainment founder and co-publisher Brent E. Erwin. “It has all of the elements that made the movie a cultural phenomenon, and Black Dynamite himself is still as much of a bad dude on the page as he is on the screen.”

Black Dynamite was directed by Scott Sanders and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. The film stars Michael Jai White as Black Dynamite, a Kung-Fu fighting, gun blasting ladies’ man willing to fight from the ghetto streets all the way to the White House in his efforts to take down “The Man”.

“Although written for film, Black Dynamite was always meant to move beyond the camera,” continues Sanders. “As a medium, comic books seemed like such a logical step in Black Dynamite’s development as a character, and what better way to start then having him bring down the infamous Slave Island.”

Black Dynamite: Slave Island is based on a story by Michael Jai White, Myron Minns and Scott Sanders. Written by Brian Ash with pencils by Jun Lofamia, the 48-page on shot hit stores in February 2011.

As part of ASR Innertainment’s The Crest: Movie Series, the company will be holding two screenings of Black Dynamite. The first screening will be at the Crossroads Theater 2590 Washington Street Denver, CO. on Friday, April 15, 2011, from 6:00pm to 11:00pm, film starting at 7:45pm sharp. A reception will precede the first screening with food and beverages, with sounds provided by DJ Cavem (http://www.djcavem.com/).

The second screening with be next door at Coffee at The Point 710 East 26th Avenue, from 10:00pm to 2:00am for a midnight screening of Black Dynamite. Sounds will be provided by The Girl Grabbers (www.facebook.com/girlgrabbers) from 10:30pm to 11:30pm. A closing reception will follow the second screening with food, beverages and promotional materials, including limited copies of the limited edition comic book, Black Dynamite: Slave Island, as well as Black Dynamite merchandise for purchase at booth screenings.

Prose to Film: Adjustment Team by Philip K. Dick

ADJUSTMENT TEAM
A short story by Philip K. Dick

“Adjustment Team” is a science fiction short story by Philip K. Dick that was first published in Orbit Science Fiction (September-October 1954). It has been reprinted several times, including in the collection, Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick (2002), which is where I read it. The story is the basis for the current film, The Adjustment Bureau, written and directed by George Nolfi and starring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Anthony Mackie.

The story focuses on a real estate salesman named Ed Fletcher who accidentally sees the truth behind reality. On a bright sunny morning, someone from the Adjustment Team known only as “Clerk” must make sure that Ed is in Sector T137 which is scheduled for adjustment. Clerk assigns the task of making sure that Ed is at the right place at the right time to Ed’s dog, Dobbie, a “canine Summoner.”

Of course, things go awry. Ed arrives at his job and sees the world in an altered state. He ends up knowing something he shouldn’t know and is soon on the run from the Adjustment Team. How he resolves this crisis will determine his ultimate fate.

Like much of Philip K. Dick’s work, the “Adjustment Team” deals with themes of dislocation, paranoia, and unyielding bureaucracy, but there is, this time, also a theme of yearning for a connection with a higher being. When Dick has Ed meet the Old Man, the boss of the Adjustment Team, Dick has Ed begging the Old Man to understand his plight. It isn’t a stretch to see this as Dick’s take on the powerless everyman who seeks mercy and understanding from a higher authority – a tyrannical power inflexible about its rules. Still, the everyman believes that his request is reasonable, even in the face of a power that insists on the opposite.

Overall, Adjustment Team is a minor story. The characters are soft, although Ed Fletcher is more filled out. The adversaries are largely underutilized, although I’m sure the film, The Adjustment Bureau, makes more use of them. The ending of “Adjustment Team” suggests an optimism that is surprising, but that makes this story more charming than the beginning and middle indicate.

Here He Is! Henry Cavill is the New Superman

OK. Henry Cavill is the new Superman in the 2012 update of the franchise, a movie that is reportedly titled, "The Man of Steel."  He is a British actor and was born in 1983.  His first major role was in the 2002 version of The Count of Monte Cristo, and he also had small roles in Stardust (2007) and Woody Allen's 2009 flick, Whatever Works.

The news began leaking out late last week, I think.  Then, Deadline made it semi-official, but I guest this press release make it officially official:

Henry Cavill Will Take on the Dual Role of Clark Kent / Superman in the New Film from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.

The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Cavill recently wrapped production on “The Cold Light of Day” and stars in the upcoming “Immortals,” opening this fall.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. [END]

He's handsome enough, and right now, I like the choice.  More later... maybe.

Iron Man 2 Gets 2011 Oscar Nomination

The Oscar watchers that I'd been following the last few weeks thought it would be the odd man out in favor of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, but Iron Man 2 earned an Oscar nomination in the category of best visual effects.

83rd Academy Award Nominations - Visual Effects:

1. “Alice in Wonderland” Ken Ralston, David Schaub, Carey Villegas and Sean Phillips

2. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” Tim Burke, John Richardson, Christian Manz and Nicolas Aithadi

3. “Hereafter” Michael Owens, Bryan Grill, Stephan Trojanski and Joe Farrell

4. “Inception” Paul Franklin, Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley and Peter Bebb

5. “Iron Man 2” Janek Sirrs, Ben Snow, Ged Wright and Daniel Sudick

I think the winner is likely to be either Alice in Wonderland or Inception, but still when one considers the state of movies made from Marvel Comics titles just 13 years ago before Blade, Marvel Studios has come a long way.

The winners in this category and others will be announced Feb. 27, 2011 on ABC.

Lindsay, Patrick Meaney, Jason Michelitch, Chris Murphy, Chad Nevett, Kevin Thurman, Brett Williams, and Sean Witzke.

Our third Ellis book of the year will be Voyage in Noise: Warren Ellis and the Demise of Western Civilization, authored by Kevin Thurman. This book examines Ellis’s entire body of work for common themes, discovering philosophical perspectives and parallels that illuminate contemporary society.

To top it all off, 2011 will see the premier of the documentary film Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts, directed by Patrick Meaney and produced in association with Respect! Films (Amber Yoder, Jordan Rennert, and Patrick Meaney). It’s executive produced by Sequart (Julian Darius and Mike Phillips) and F. J. DeSanto, with creative consultant Kevin Thurman. This follow-up to Respect! and Sequart’s popular Grant Morrison: Talking with Gods features interviews with Ellis and a plethora of other comics professionals. It’s tentatively scheduled for late 2011 release.

Although 2011 is the Year of Ellis, that doesn’t mean Sequart won’t also be releasing other works. In fact, even before any of our Ellis titles, we’re offering Classics on Infinite Earths: The Justice League and DC Crossover Canon, authored by Julian Darius. The book examines classic Justice League stories and universe-wide DC crossovers, arguing that they constitute a literary canon. Along with this book, other non-Ellis projects are in the works, and we’ll be making some major announcements on those in the coming months.

Thanks for your support, and be sure to tweet and post about the Year of Ellis! [THE END]

Leroy Douresseaux on After Dark #2

AFTER DARK #2

RADICAL PUBLISHING
CREATORS: Antoine Fuqua and Wesley Snipes
WRITER: Peter Milligan
ARTIST: Leonardo Manco
PAINTS: Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo, Sansan Saw
LETTERS: Clayton Cowles
COVER: Francesco “Matt” Mattina
56pp, Color, $4.99

After Dark is a Radical Publishing comic book series created by director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and actor Wesley Snipes (Blade). This science fiction series is actually written by Peter Milligan (Hellblazer).

After Dark is set in the future on an Earth that exists in a state of near-perpetual darkness. Civilization is mostly confined to domed cities, with Solar City being the most populated. Some of the populace lives in a drug-addled stupor; others riot either because they have a cause or because they are bored. The rulers of Solar City decide that Angel, a messianic figure who hasn’t been seen in decades, can tame the populace. They enlist Omar, a Bedouin drifter, to guide a rag-tag team composed of specialists and known criminals into the wilds outside the city to find Angel.

After Dark #2 opens in the disastrous aftermath of Omar’s mission to save the ill Trooper Jones. Now, the Bedouin is left in the darkness with Ana, a femme fatale, and the gang brawler, “Monster” Monclare. The trio eventually rejoins the mission and the group resumes the trip to Angel’s last known location, Archipelago City, where they find more than they expected.

This second issue of After Dark is a much better read than the first. For one thing, Peter Milligan does something at which he is immensely good: write character drama for science fiction, fantasy, and horror, and After Dark is a blend of all three. Getting to know these characters makes the story a much better read, and, combined with the interesting plot twists and quirks, the characters make After Dark that much more attractive. As usual, anything drawn by Leonardo Manco is good graphical storytelling, and the paints by the team of Kinsun Loh, Jerry Choo, Sansan Saw bring out Manco’s best artistic traits.

Fans of post-apocalyptic science fiction comic books and Peter Milligan’s work will want to try After Dark.

Angelina Jolie the Latest Subject of "Female Force"

BLUEWATER TACKLES THE COMPLICATED LIFE OF ANGELINA JOLIE

Movie star. Defender of human rights. Tireless mother. Tabloid fodder. All of these describe Angelina Jolie. Yet not one of them paints a complete picture of this talented and often controversial actress.

Independent comics company Bluewater Productions will do its part to fill in the blanks surrounding Jolie's life when the publisher debuts its latest biography comic this January, Female Force: Angelina Jolie.

The 32-page comic, written by Brent Sprecher with pencils by Nuno Nobre, will be available in comic shops and from online retailers such as Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. The comic will retail for $3.99.

Female Force offers a broad examination of strong women in our society. Past issues include Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Sarah Palin, Oprah and Hillary Clinton.

Writer Sprecher says that even long-time fans of Jolie's work will be surprised at what they learn about the talented actress. “I learned a great deal about her struggles and triumphs as an award-winning actress, mother and humanitarian,” Sprecher said. “Often painted as an edgy, slightly dangerous movie star, what is often not revealed about Ms. Jolie is her tireless commitment to charity work and her dedication to the plight of refugees around the world as a Goodwill Ambassador with the United Nations.”

Bluewater Productions is no stranger to biography comics. The company, which publishes the Political Power, Fame and Female Force series of biography comics, has made headlines for its features on such personalities as Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, Justin Bieber and J.K. Rowling. The company plans to release future comics on Danica Patrick, Beyonce, Bill O'Reilly and Betty White.

Bluewater president and founder Darren G. Davis says that he has a simple goal with his company's bio comics: introduce a new generation of readers to the wonders of sequential storytelling.

“We're focusing our biography titles on the most intriguing celebrities, world leaders and artists,” Davis said. “This is by design. We want to bring new fans to comics. One way to do this is to publish biographies on celebrities that already have strong and dedicated fan bases.”

For his part, Sprecher hopes that his contribution to the Female Force lineup will shed some new light on an often misunderstood actress.

“My hope is that this biography, in some small way, inspires others to follow Angelina Jolie's example and make helping those in need a part of their daily lives,” Sprecher said.

Bluewater Productions is a leading independent publisher of comics. In addition to its biography comics, the company publishes a full line of fiction stories, everything from superhero tales to young adult comics to mysteries and science fiction.

Bluewater's Mark Zuckerberg Comic Optioned as a Film

“MARK ZUKERBERG: CREATOR OF FACEBOOK” COMIC BOOK OPTIONED AS AN FILM

Hayden 5 Media and Bluewater Productions team up to create the animated film based off the comic book for Mark Zuckerburg: Creator of Facebook.

“When we found out that Bluewater was releasing this comic, we knew we had to get on board,” says Todd Wiseman, President of Hayden 5 Media. “We saw a great opportunity to re-tell the story of Mark Zuckerburg post Social Network in a brighter, animated form that could be enjoyed and understood by a broader audience.”

Much like the technique used in the film A Scanner Darkly, the production of Mark Zuckerburg and The Found will begin with live action filmmaking in a digital medium, followed by the use of interpolated rotoscope. The result will be a cross between real characters and animated surroundings seamlessly integrated for a unique, comic book aesthetic.

The comic book is written by Jerome Maida and drawn by Fritz Saalfeld. It is described as the brains and driving force behind Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has become the youngest billionaire in the history of the planet. As this comic reveals, the road for the success for both his creation and him personally was not preordained nor was it always a smooth ride. He would be tempted with unimaginable amounts of money and have to deal harshly with people along the way - many of whom would later feel betrayed. Read how a young man's frustration with women helped spark an idea that would have him dating Victoria's secret models and how socially inept young man wound up creating a company that has revolutionized the way hundreds of millions of people all over the globe socialize with each other.

The comic book hits stores in late December. The suggested retail price (SRP) for the upcoming comic book is $6.99. To make sure you get your copy, contact your local comic book store to pre-order it. To find a comic book store near you go to www.comicshoplocator.com. The comic can be ordered online by clicking here: http://bit.ly/c2IkZN

“This will not be the last retelling of the Marc Zuckerburg story,” says Milos Silber, Executive Producer at Hayden 5 Media. “We're just aware of the profound impact of Facebook, and with over 500 million users, we're bound to have an audience. One that is more willing to watch a shortened, visually captivating summary of this short epic online, or on their favorite network.”

While Hayden 5 Media predicts the film will bring back the same audience intrigued by Social Network, Marc Zuckerburg and The Found will shed new light on the controversial story of the creators life and bring a completely new look and feel than that of the feature film.

Bluewater Productions publishes a wide range of comics, from superheroes to horror to children's tales to its much-discussed line of biography comics. Past biography comics from Bluewater have focused on the lives of Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, George Bush, Betty White, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber.

FireBreather Movie and New Comic Get Same Day Release

DOUBLE DOSE OF FIREBREATHER

First issue of new FIREBREATHER miniseries gets variant cover from Cartoon Network movie

The FIREBREATHER movie debuts on Cartoon Network on November 24, 2010, and FIREBREATHER VOL. 3: HOLMGANG #1 is getting both a variant cover and an early release on the same day to celebrate!

Advance reviews for the movie version of the critically acclaimed Image Comics series have been stellar, and HOLMGANG #1 is a great place for new fans to jump onto the series. The variant cover features exclusive artwork from the TV movie and will be in stores November 24 alongside the regular cover.

Teenager Duncan Rosenblatt has a human mother and a giant, city-stomping, kaiju father. He also has all the worries of a normal high schooler, from bullies to girls to fitting in. Written by Phil Hester and drawn by Andy Kuhn, FIREBREATHER VOL. 3: HOLMGANG picks up where FIREBREATHER VOL. 2 left off: Duncan deals with not only losing his father but with keeping his father's death a secret, even from his mother. But Duncan's mysterious extended family may not let him keep that secret -- or his life -- much longer.

"We are super excited to have the first issue of our new Firebreather mini-series hit stores the same day the animated film debuts on Cartoon Network," says Kuhn. "The film's director Peter Chung really knocked it out of the park, and the Cartoon Network variant cover is a great looking piece of art that really gives you a vibe of what to expect in the movie. Please watch it, you won't be disappointed, AND buy the comic, because it's insanely awesome!

Hester adds, “I'm excited that people will get a glimpse of the gorgeous treatment Peter Chung and company have worked up for Duncan on this alternate cover. The 24th is a chance for fans new and old to get a double dose of classic and animated Firebreather. The best of both worlds!”

FIREBREATHER VOL. 3: HOLMGANG #1 (of 4) (OCT100443), a 32-page full-color comic book for $3.99, will be in stores November 24, 2010, with a cover by series artist Andy Kuhn and a variant cover featuring artwork from the Cartoon Network television movie.
