Luck Cage created by Archie Goodwin and John Romita, Sr.
Luke Cage is a Marvel Comics superhero. Also known as, “Power Man,” Cage was created by writer Archie Goodwin and artist John Romita, Sr., and first appeared in Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 (cover dated: June 1972). Cage was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, but he eventually gained superpowers in the form of durability, unbreakable skin, and superhuman strength.
As Power Man, Cage has been most associated with another superhero, his partner, Iron Fist (Daniel “Danny” Rand). However, Cage has also been a solo act (as has Iron Fist). As part Marvel Comics' latest publishing event/initiative, NOW!, we have the new four-issue comic book miniseries, Cage! It is written by Genndy Tartakovsky; drawn by Tartakovsky (pencils) and Stephen DeStefano (inks); colored by Scott Wills; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.
Tartakovsky is the creator of the Cartoon Network animated classics, “Dexter's Laboratory” (also “Dexter's Lab”) and “Samurai Jack,” and the animated film franchise, Hotel Transylvania (Sony Pictures Animation). Tartakovsky, who has occasionally produced comic books, returns to the medium with his distinctive take on Luke Cage-Power Man, giving this new comic book a 1970s pop culture and blaxploitation vibe.
Cage! opens in New York City, 1977. Cage heads to Chinatown for a rendezvous with his lady, Misty Knight. When she doesn't show, Cage starts looking for answers and discovers that heroes from all over NYC are disappearing. After he is kidnapped, Cage meets the villain behind the kidnappings, Professor Soos. Soos has concocted some crazy Island of Dr. Moreau plan to have the kidnapped heroes fight the abominable animal hybrids he has created.
Cage! #4 opens on a mysterious island of an unknown locale. Deep beneath its beautiful and thick jungle is the lair of Prof. Soos. Cage, forced to fight, is successful against Soos' man-animal monsters. The other kidnapped heroes, like Dazzler and Brother Voodoo, are not. Cage's victories, however, do not earn him freedom or even a cash prize! His success only means that he now has to fight the ultimate opponent, one who is a shockingly skilled martial artist.
If Marvel Comics' continuity is important to you, dear reader, don't take Cage! seriously in terms of Marvel continuity. It is a special, event miniseries, but Genny Tartakovsky has created a comic book that is a love letter to and good-natured spoof of Marvel Comics titles published during the mid to late 1970s. You can tell by which superheroes make appearances and which costumes they wear.
I love Cage!, and I wish that it were an ongoing series. I know, however, that what makes it special is that it is a short-term event. Cage! recalls classic Luke Cage-Power Man and also the spirit of one the recurring characters on “Dexter's Laboratory,” “Action Hank.” Hank is the stereotypical blaxploitation character as a heroic crime fighter and a television action hero. Hank has characteristics that borrow from popular 1970s and 80s action heroes like Shaft and Rambo and iconic actors like Chuck Norris and Mr. T. Genndy's Luke Cage reminds me of Action Hank, and that is a good thing.
In the end, Cage! is the kind of comic book that I would have loved to have read as a child. It gives me that feeling of joy and wonder that keeps me reading through the comic books that can't quite give me that feeling of joy and wonder.

In the end, Cage! is the kind of comic book that I would have loved to have read as a child. It gives me that feeling of joy and wonder that keeps me reading through the comic books that can't quite give me that feeling of joy and wonder.

When it debuted on NBC on September 8, 1966, the science fiction television series, “Star Trek,” was like nothing that came before it. Created by Gene Roddenberry, “Star Trek” followed the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), a “starship,” as it traveled through the Milky Way galaxy during the future-decade of the 2260.
The series depicted the adventures of Enterprise's crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk. Kirk was assisted by six prominent crew members: first officer and science officer, Spock; chief medical officer, Leonard “Bones” McCoy; chief engineer, Montgomery “Scotty” Scott; communications officer, Nyota Uhura; helmsman Hikaru Sulu; and navigator Pavel Chekov.
When NBC broadcast Star Trek's final episode on June 3, 1969, fans of the television show refused to let it go. In a sense, that ending was the beginning of what is a five-decade old, worldwide, multi-platform media franchise. One of those platforms is comics, beginning in 1967 with the publication of Star Trek comic books by Gold Key Comics.
IDW Publishing is the current license-holder (since 2006) with the rights to produce and publish comic books based on the various Star Trek films and television series. Last year, IDW announced Star Trek: Waypoint, an anthology comic book series that would offers stories featuring the crews and characters from the first five Star Trek television series: “Star Trek (The Original Series),” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” and “Star Trek: Enterprise.”
In November 2017, IDW published the trade paperback, Star Trek: Waypoint, which collected the comics short stories published in Star Trek: Waypoint issues #1-6. This collection reprints 12 stories and features the creative efforts of more than 40 writers, artists, colorists, and letterers.
Story highlights include “Puzzles,” which is set in the world of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and finds Captain Geordi La Forge and his crew of Datas taking on a massive cube-shaped starship and its obstinate artificial intelligence. Original Trek character, Lt. Uhura makes a surprising and curious friend in”Daylily.” Science and coffee save the day in the “Star Trek Voyager” in the story, “The Wildman Maneuver.”
The crew of the “Deep Space 9” try to understand Bajoran tradition in “Mother's Walk.” Captain Jonathan Archer (“Star Trek: Enterprise”) discovers “The Fragile Beauty of Loyalty.” The unknown and the new and Spock's replacement vex the crew of the classic “The Original Series” crew in “The Fear” (a “Star Trek: Phase II” story).
I vaguely remember the Star Trek: Waypoint miniseries (2016-2017), but I mostly ignore Star Trek comic books. Over the decades that I have read comic books, I have read a few Star Trek comic books, here and there, but I never really warmed to them. When IDW sent me a copy of the Waypoint trade paperback for review, I kinda looked forward to reading it. I forced myself to start with the first story, which I hoped would build some momentum that would help me read the entire book.
Wow, was I shocked. I didn't know that Star Trek comics could be as good as the stories contained in this book. I consider five of the twelve stories: “Puzzles,” “Daylily,” “Mother's Walk,” “Come Away Child,” and “The Fear” to be great stories that would be worthy of being turned into episodes of their respective Star Trek TV series – if those series were still being produced. Two other stories, “The Fragile Beauty of Loyalty” and “The Rebound Effect” are close to being exceptional. The five other stories are of varying degrees of quality – novel, funny, and offbeat.
“Puzzles” is the first really good story I have read that is written by Donny Cates, who became a hot property off his Image Comics vampire comic book, Redneck. I read the first two issues of Redneck and the first issue of Cates' Babyteeth (AfterShock Comics), and none of them impressed me. So I was was pleasantly surprised by the imagination of “Puzzles.”
I adore “Daylily,” which is written, drawn, and colored by Sandra Lanz and lettered by Andworld Designs. The story reminds me of the short-lived NBC Saturday morning animated series, “Star Trek: The Animated Series,” which I loved as a child. Plus, this story stars my sci-fi fantasy boo, Uhura.
I highly recommend this book to people who read Star Trek comic books. I would also suggest that Trek fans in general give this book at least a cursory glance. I think that will be enough to encourage one to purchase Star Trek: Waypoint.

Review: BULLSEYE #1
BULLSEYE No. 1 (2017)
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
WRITERS: Ed Brisson; Marv Wolfman
ART: Guillermo Sanna; Alec Morgan
COLORS: Miroslav Mrva; Frank Martin
LETTERS: VC's Clayton Cowles
COVER: Dave Johnson
VARIANT COVERS: Tim Bradstreet; Marco Checchetto; John Tyler Christopher; Bill Sienkiewicz; Chris Stevens; Skottie Young
36pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (April 2017)
Parental Advisory
“The Colombian Connection” Part 1
Bullseye is a Marvel Comics supervillain. The character was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist John Romita, Sr. and first appeared in Daredevil #131 (cover dated: March 1976). Bullseye is an assassin and he is best known for his personal vendetta against the superhero Daredevil. Bullseye does not have super-powers but he can turn almost any object into a lethal weapon.
Bullseye is the new comic book miniseries starring this popular villain. It is written by Ed Brisson; drawn by Guillermo Sanna; colored by Miroslav Mrva; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.
Bullseye #1 opens to find the titular villain/anti-hero active again after being alive, dead, and imprisoned again and again. Now, he is at the Houghton Residence in Long Island, New York fulfilling an assassination contract. But, man! Bullseye is hoping that his next assignment yields both a high body count and buckets of blood. Desperate gangster Raph Losani may offer that, but a desperate widow just wants to count one body.
Recently, I reviewed the first issue of Kingpin, another comic book seemingly spun out of the world of Marvel Comics' Daredevil. I was harsh in my review, but not because I thought the writer (Matthew Rosenberg) and the artist (Ben Torres) lacked talent (Rosenberg) or potential (Torres). The problem is the fact that these two delivered substandard work and the fact that Marvel Comics would consider such unprofessional material worth publishing and charging readers $3.99 to read.
Bullseye #1 suffers from the same problem of a lack of professionalism. The story and script that Ed Brisson offers is just lazy hackwork that mimics better storytelling. The casual depiction of Bullseye's murderous rampages is not imaginative or smart, but it is unimaginative and stupid. Frank Miller did not create Bullseye, but during his 1980s run on Daredevil, he certainly defined the character, making him the kind of dangerous and alluring villain that becomes timeless. Here, Bullseye's violence seems as if Brisson took the clever violence of Mark Millar's comic books and turned that into filler material because Brisson could not think of anything else to do with it.
I think artist Guillerma Sanna has a lot of potential, but in Bullseye #1 he draws as if he should still be toiling in the world of micro press black and white comic books. Everything here looks as if Sanna is simply mimicking (badly) other artists' (good) work; Chris Samnee and Eduardo Risso, come to mind.
There is a backup story by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Alec Morgan, “If I Tell You...” that takes some of the sour out of the main story. It makes me wonder why Wolfman isn't writing this miniseries. Is it because he is “too old” and “passè?” I don't doubt that he would not write as bad a script as Ed Brisson wrote, even if he kept the overall plot. I also like Alec Morgan's Eduardo Risso-like art. Why isn't he drawing the main story!?
I am not recommending this, nor do I intend to read another issue. But I might change my mind...
