William the Last in a new comic book series created by cartoonist Brian Shearer. Shearer has worked as a pencil artist, inker, or colorist on several of IDW Publishing's licensed publications, including Ghostbusters, Star Trek, and Transformers.
William the Last chronicles the adventures of an orphan who discovers that his name, “William,” is a forbidden word in a strange kingdom. William meets Ella, a girl about his age, and she gives him the name “Jacob,” and she introduces him to her parents – her father, Magnus, and her mother, Kathran. Ella and her people live underground, beneath a decaying kingdom that becomes aware of William's presence and wants him destroyed.
After the opening four-issue series, William the Last, Shearer debuted a second four-issue series, William the Last: Flight & Fight. The second series finds William attempting to rescue Ella.
As William the Last: Flight & Fight #1 begins, Magnus and Elias (his partner in crime) hide the armor belonging to the Hawk-Rider they... captured. Magnus has a plan to use it to rescue his daughter, Ella, who has been captured and is imprisoned in the city. However, young William decides that he should do the rescuing. Meanwhile, imprisoned Ella shockingly discovers that she and the weird guy in the cell next to hers have a mutual acquaintance.
I thoroughly enjoyed William the Last #1, and I thought that it suggested that the series as a whole could be quite good. It reminded me of the early issues of Bone, Mouse Guard, and Farlaine the Goblin, three independently published, fantasy comic book series that have the look and feel of classic children's fantasy fiction. Of course, I was right. The second, third, and fourth issues of William the Last were and are fantastic reads.
William the Last: Flight & Fight #1 seems to be too good to be true. There is not a wasted page, and every panel of this comic book makes you race to the next one, making you flip through the pages of this comic book like a desperate person. I don't know why William the Last isn't a big freaking hit with more comic book readers. It's not perfect, but it's perfect for most readers of comic books that make an attempt at epic fantasy.
Brian Shearer is a fantastic artist and colorist. It is not so much that he is stylish (which he is); it is that his illustrations are evocative, and so, the emotions in his story come across strongly. Mood and atmosphere are also evident; William the Last is dark and moody, but the sense of adventure is imbued in every panel.
William the Last feels like a timeless tale. It could have fit on the shelves or in spinner racks right alongside American comic books of published in any of the last eight decades. William the Last: Flight & Fight feels like it is ready to grapple with the big adventure and movements of epic fantasy; think The Lord of the Rings or works inspired by it. The next time you go to the comic book shop, dear reader, say his name. Shout out for William the Last.

“Burn Baby Burn” Part V: “Changing the Story”
Killadelphia is a comic book series from writer Rodney Barnes and artist Jason Shawn Alexander. At the center of this series is a police officer caught in a lurid conspiracy in which vampires attempt to rule Philadelphia, “the City of Brotherly Love.” Colorist Luis Nct and letterer Marshall Dillon complete Killadelphia's creative team.
Killadelphia focuses on James “Jim” Sangster, Jr., who comes home to Philly to deal with the final affairs of his recently murdered father, revered Philadelphia homicide detective, James Sangster, Sr. Not dead, but undead, the father joined the son, the chief medical examiner (Jose Padilla), and a rebellious vampire to lead the battle that saves Philly from the vampires. But that was just the first battle, and this is an apocalypse.
Killadelphia #11 (“Changing the Story”) opens with the second president of the United States, John Adams, languishing in the … “Afterlife.” He was the mastermind of a vampire revolution, but he was thwarted by several individuals, one being Tevin Thompkins. Now, a kind of surrogate son offers a kind of surrogate father a way back.
Elsewhere, the real father-son duo, the Sangster boys, settle into the reality of doing-it-one-more-time. Meanwhile, there is a change of story for John Adams' queen-of-the-damned-wife when she recounts her love for another damned … wife (so to speak).
Meanwhile, the rebellion born within the rebellion takes a turn.
THE LOWDOWN: As I first write this review, it is Christmas Week 2020. Killadelphia #11 hits comic book shops Wednesday, December 23rd, two days before the Christmas … of the apocalypse. And just as we dread a mutation from across the pond, Killadelphia's story mutates.
Writer Rodney Barnes and artist Jason Shawn Alexander work as if they were a single unit. The work of each has merged into a single powerful graphical storytelling narrative that has made Killadelphia the best vampire comic book in a long time … if not the best vampire comic book ever published in North America.
Of course, Luis Nct's fiery colors burn stronger than ever, and Marshall Dillon's lettering keeps order in the streets of Killadelphia. Sometimes, I think that I am running out of ways to praise this wonderful comic book. Oh, hold on! Have I said that the final issue of the story arc (issue #12) is 40 pages long?! If Beale Street could talk, it would tell you to read Killadelphia right away.
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of vampire comic books and of exceptional dark fantasy will want Killadelphia.

The back-up feature, “Elysium Gardens,” first opens on the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, California on April 28, 1962 and then, moves to Sicily, 827 A.D. Now, the story moves … back to the future or present in L.A. After hearing a eulogy/speech given by Malcolm X, Angela/Zubiya and her pack decide to use their curse as a key to “Black Liberation.”
Well, I certainly didn't expect an appearance by Malcolm X … even in a comic book that features President John Quincy Adams. And Jason Shawn Alexander's uncanny depiction of Malcolm captures the soul of this man's public crusade. I think that is all I can say … at the moment.

In 1981, actress and model Cassandra Peterson created the “horror hostess character, “Elvira.” Elvira gradually grew in popularity and eventually became a brand name. As Elvira, Peterson endorsed many products and became a pitch-woman, appearing in numerous television commercials throughout the 1980s. Elvira also appeared in comic books, beginning in 1986 with the short-lived series from DC Comics, Elvira's House of Mystery, which ran for eleven issues and one special issue (1987). In 1993, Eclipse Comics and Claypool Comics began the long-running Elvira: Mistress of the Dark.
In 2018, Elvira returned to comic books via Dynamite Entertainment in the four-issue comic book miniseries, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, that actually ran for 12 issues. The second Elvira miniseries, Elvira: The Shape of Elvira arrived in 2019. It was written by David Avallone; drawn by Fran Strukan and Pasquale Qualano; colored by Maxim Simic and Walter Pereya; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.
Elvira: The Shape of Elvira finds the Mistress of the Dark landing a role in a prestige film, but she discovers that her co-star is not who she thought he was. This four-issue miniseries is now collected in the new trade paperback, Elvira: The Shape of Elvira.
As The Shape of Elvira opens, Elvira has received an urgent call from her talent manager, Jill Van Nuys. Jill informs Elvira that someone has finally offered her the kind of plum role for which she has been hoping. It's a hush-hush film project, entitled “The Heart is the Black Lagoon,” but the film's director is the wunderkind, Billy Bullworth. Elvira knows the director has a reputation for being strange, but she wants this role.
Elvira arrives at Bullworth's complex, and the strangeness begins when she meets Bullworth's assistant, Don Sandman, who previously started in a Bullworth film. Next, it's off to sign an insane non-disclosure agreement, and then, a misadventure behind the bookcase. Elvira later meets Bullworth's screenwriter-of-choice, Eddie Mezzogiorno, who is also secretive.
Finally, Elvira meets Bullworth, who is as melodramatic as he wants to be, but when he reveals what he keeping secret, Elvira can't believe her eyes. “The Heart is the Black Lagoon” is a horror-romance, and her co-star is … Gill-Man?! Bullworth insists that “Gill-Man” is really an actor in a supremely-designed fish-man monster suit, and Elvira is willing to play along.
However, after an encounter with two U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department agents, Elvira knows something … fishy is going on. It seems that Mr. Bullworth wants his film to spawn more than just box office dollars and Academy Award nominations.
THE LOWDOWN: With the Shape of Elvira, writer David Avallone does a send-up of director Guillermo del Toro's 2017 film, The Shape of Water. The highly-acclaimed movie won four Academy Awards, including “Best Picture” and “Best Director.” Avallone also takes aim at del Toro and his earnest filmography, in general, with its artsy sci-fi and fantasy offerings. Avallone also makes a pass at The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), the most obvious cinematic influence on The Shape of Water. In addition, Avallone gives gentle ribbing to the 1950 Film-Noir classic, Sunset Boulevard, with some elements from the film making its way into the comedy seafood gumbo that is The Shape of Elvira.
Truthfully, The Shape of Elvira would probably work as a forty-eight page graphic novel, but Avallone's smooth comedy, sarcasm and snark, and witty asides makes the story move fast. Before I knew it, dear readers, I'd reached the end. Suddenly, I wanted this comic book, which could have been half its size, to be so much longer. Some comic book fans can never be satisfied, eh?
The art by Fran Strukan and Pasquale Qualano is straightforward, but always with a wink and nod. However, Avallone's skewering of precious pop culture comes through with a bluntness that will give some pause … before they are laughing again. Each artist takes his storytelling seriously, while conveying that hilarity that will ensue. I have a few quibbles about the drawing techniques, but that does not stop me from enjoying this comic book.
Maxim Šimic and Walter Pereya both present a tapestry of muted colors that occasionally have a dreamlike quality. Sometimes shadowy and sometimes moody, the colors also give this story a film-noir atmosphere. As usual, Taylor Esposito's lettering is solid and perfectly captures the interplay of comedy and mystery and also, Elvira's snark, sarcasm, and wit.
Elvira: The Shape of Elvira is another fun time with Elvira, and the Mistress of the Dark is a good time, live-action or comic books. I wouldn't mind seeing Elvira and Avallone skewer the filmmography of other “visionary” directors – David Cronenberg, Tim Burton, Mario Bava, etc.
