I Reads You Review: ATTACK ON TITAN Volume 1
ATTACK ON TITAN, VOL. 1
Creators: Hajime Isayama; Sheldon Orzka (Translator), Steve Wands (Lettering)
Publishing Information: Kodansha Comics (@KodanshaUSA); 208 pages, $10.99 (US), $11.99 (CAN)
Ordering Numbers: ISBN: 978-1-61262-024-4 (ISBN), paperback
Rated: “T” for “Ages 16+”
At some point, I discovered that the popular anime series, “Attack on Titan” (which is broadcast on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim), is based on a manga. I became curious and wanted to read it, and a 20 percent-off coupon from Barnes and Nobles encouraged me to indulge my curiosity.
Written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, the Attack on Titan manga began serialization in Japan's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine (published by Kodansha) in September 2009. It has been collected 15 tankōbon volumes (or graphic novels) as of December 2014.
Attack on Titan, Vol. 1 (Chapters 1 to 4) introduces a world where humanity lives inside cities surrounded by enormous walls. These walls are a defense against the Titans, which are bizarre, gigantic humanoid creatures that devour humans for some unknown reason (while ignoring other animals). As the first chapter (“To You, 2,000 Years From Now) opens, what is left of mankind has hidden in a giant, three-walled city for the past century, trapped inside by their fear of the Titans.
The tallest Titans are less than 50-feet in height. The outer wall of the last human refuge is 164-feet tall. However, a 200-foot tall Titan suddenly appears and breaches the wall, which allows smaller Titans to infiltrate the city and cause death and devastation. Five years later, Eren Yeager, who witnessed his mother being devoured by a Titan during the breach, is a military cadet looking forward to graduating. Then, he will begin his campaign to eradicate the Titans.
I find Attack on Titan to be intriguing, but weird. Creator Hajime Isayama makes the man-eating Titans fearsome and mysterious, and his pitiful humans give this manga an almost fairy tale-like sensibility and poignant quality. There is also a Junji Ito quality to Isayama's art.
However, I am not sure if I will read this series past Attack on Titan Volume 1. I thoroughly enjoyed the chaotic last 20 pages, which are both chilling and mesmerizing – with a shocking conclusion. Perhaps this series will call me back.
[This volumes includes a three-page section in which Hajime Isayama answers readers' questions.]

I Reads You Review: ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
MARVEL COMICS – @Marvel
WRITER: Rick Remender
PENCILS: Stuart Immonen
INKS: Wade von Grawbadger
COLORS: Marte Gracia with Eduardo Navarro
LETTERS: VC's Joe Caramagna
COVER: Stuart Immonen and Wade von Grawbadger and Marte Gracia
VARIANT COVERS: Paul Pope; Alex Ross; Sara Pichelli with Laura Martin; Kris Anka
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (January 2015)
Rated “T”
Captain America created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
As part of its “Avenger NOW!” initiative, Marvel Comics is debuting some new titles and relaunching others. All-New Captain America is a relaunch. Written by Rick Remender, drawn by Stuart Immonen (pencils) and Wade von Grawbadger (inks), colored by Marte Gracia (with Eduardo Navarro), and lettered by Joe Caramagna, this Captain America title launches superhero, Sam Wilson a.k.a. The Falcon, as the new-look Captain America.
The Falcon is an African-American superhero created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan that first appeared in Captain America #117 (cover dated: September 1969). In his new role, the Falcon gets Captain America's shield and a redesigned uniform, as well as a new version of his Falcon wings. Sam Wilson also gets a partner, Ian Zola, the son Arnim Zola. Ian is the new Nomad.
All-New Captain America #1 finds Captain America and Nomad, with Redwing (a highly-trained hunting falcon), infiltrating a Hydra base hidden beneath a mountain. The new Captain America wants to show that he can be the man, but visiting mercenary, Batroc, doesn't thing agree. Besides, Batroc isn't the only familiar face making a surprise appearance.
I have not read many comic books written by Rick Remender. This first issue of All-New Captain America makes me want to read more. This story features some typical superhero action, but it has a humorous streak, and all the major characters seem to be on equal footing. Also, the battle depicted here will not be a one-sided affair, and the winner(s) will have to earn it. The situation is in flux for the new Captain America and that piques my interest.
Before there was All-New Captain America, there was All-New X-Men, which was guided by the art team of Stuart Immonen, Wade von Grawbadger, and Marte Gracia. I loved the art in that flashy new, X-Men comic book, but I came to take it for granted. Seeing their work here, however, makes me appreciate this art team all over again. This is one pretty comic book, so I think I'll come back to All-New Captain America to see if this entire creative team can make something special of this new series and this new Captain America. I think they can.

I Reads You Review: OLD MAN'S WAR
OLD MAN'S WAR
TOR/Tom Doherty Associates – @torbooks
AUTHOR: John Scalzi
ISBN: 978-0765309402; hardcover (2005)
320pp, B&W, $. U.S.
Old Man's War is the debut novel from blogger and science fiction writer, John Scalzi. The book was first published in 2005 (although there may have been a Science Fiction Book Club edition of the book published in late 2004). It was nominated for one of science fiction literature's top honors, the Hugo Award for Best Novel, in 2006.
Old Man's War is a military science fiction novel in the tradition of Starship Troopers, the novel by the late author, Robert A. Heinlein, which was first published in hardcover in December 1959 (after being serialized in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction). Old Man's War is the story of an old man who enlists in the human interstellar military force, which wages a constant war against aliens for the planets that humans colonize and the ones humans want to colonize.
Old Man's War is told as a first-person narrative by the novel's central character, John Nicholas Perry, a retired advertising writer. Perry does two things on his 75th birthday: (1) visit his wife, Kathy's grave and (2) join the army. Ten years earlier, Perry and his wife had signed a letter of intent to join the Colonial Defense Forces.
You see, the good news about the future is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on (or support complex life) are scarce. The other races (or aliens) willing to fight for these scare planets are common, so the universe is a hostile place. The Colonial Defense Forces (CDF) protects human interplanetary colonists.
Now, Perry takes the space elevator to CDF station. It is the first step to training to fight in battles in ways that are totally different from how anyone or any military has ever fought on earth. He travels to new planets, where he must sometimes kill the inhabitants, or kill other races that also want to colonize those planets. Perry meets new people and new kinds of people and discovers things that are just new. But before a 75-year-old man can fight for the CDF, he has to undergo a shocking change.
I don't like Old Man's War. I love it; yes, “love” is the word that I want to use. There were times that I stopped reading this book for a few days just to delay getting to the last page. Of course, I later learned that Old Man's War is the first in a book series.
Old Man's War does remind me of Starship Troopers, which I read some time in the past ten years – I can't remember exactly when. So this book is what Starship Troopers is, a military science fiction novel that is also philosophical about war and about why we (humans) fight wars – against ourselves and others. Apparently, Robert Heinlein originally wrote Starship Troopers as an installment in his line juvenile science fiction novels. With that in mind, Old Man's War came across to me as a boy's adventure novel with the boy being an old man who gets to have a great big old adventure thanks to war and future science.
I do not want to dismiss Old Man's War by genre or thematically, but sometimes, it is good enough that a novel is a great story. And Old Man's War is a great story, a rousing adventure that captures the imagination. I read a lot of science fiction until my early 20s. Since then, I have read it sporadically, occasionally seeking out books generally considered science fiction and fantasy classics. Old Man's War feels like classic science fiction – a great yarn about strange aliens and strange places and about the science that can take us to those aliens and places.
Old Man's War is eternally youthful and fresh. It is an ode to the best of science fiction, but told in a new voice so that the familiar still seems captivating.

Book Review: MORIARTY: A Novel
MORIARTY: A NOVEL
HARPERCOLLINS – @HarperCollins
AUTHOR: Anthony Horowitz
ISBN: 978-0-06-237718-0; hardcover (December 2014)
304pp, B&W, $26.99 U.S.
Moriarty: A Novel is a 2014 crime thriller and detective novel from Anthony Horowitz, the author of the modern Sherlock Holmes novel, The House of Silk. Horowitz is also known for creating the acclaimed British television series, “Foyle's War.” In Moriarty, two men chase a mysterious figure who is determined to be the new crime lord of London.
This novel is set in the world of Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective, Sherlock Holmes. The story begins (more or less) in April 1891, after Sherlock Holmes and Professor James Moriarty take their infamous plunge down the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. That event apparently left both men dead, or so the public believes.
Known as “the Napoleon of Crime,” Moriarty only appeared in one Sherlock Holmes story written by Arthur Conan Doyle. This story, “The Final Problem,” was first published in Strand Magazine in December 1893. Since this was the story that depicted the incidents around the Reichenbach Falls, it was Moriarty's first and last appearance (as far as Doyle's writing goes).
In Moriarty, two men arrive in the Swiss village of Meiringen, near the Reichenbach Falls, to view the drowned corpse of Moriarty. One of them is Inspector Athelney Jones, a detective from Scotland Yard. [Jones is a character originally created by Doyle and first appeared in The Sign of Four (1890), Doyle's second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes.] The other man is Frederick Chase, an American and a senior investigator with the Pinkerton Detective Agency.
Chase tells Jones that Moriarty's death has left a convenient vacancy in London's criminal underworld. While there is no shortage of candidates to take Moriarty's place, the one most likely to succeed is a particularly fiendish criminal mastermind from America. He is Clarence Devereux, and Chase has... um... chased him across the Atlantic Ocean. The problem is that, other than a few loyal lieutenants, no one knows what Devereux looks like.
Athelney Jones, who is also a devoted student of Sherlock Holmes, joins forces Chase to find a man who may be more dangerous than Moriarty. Their investigation takes them all over Victorian London – from elegant neighborhoods to squalid districts and even into shadowy streets and lairs. Devereux proves to be an elusive and dangerous man, and while Jones and Chase are capable men, they must also content with the fearsome reputation of Moriarty, whose shadow hangs over their investigation.
Don't turn away, dear reader. Moriarty: A Novel is not another pastiche of Arthur Conan Doyle-written Sherlock Holmes stories – well, not entirely. The novel starts slow, but simmers during the four chapters that set up the central mystery. Then, the narrative explodes in Chapter 5 at Café Royal in London. From that point, I chased this story through a series of big reveals, before contending with the shocking last third of the novel.
Yes, Moriarty is a good read. That said, it's too clever or maybe a little too cute. I think some of the story's surprises change the novel. It is mostly an engrossing crime thriller; then, it becomes something that is, at best, a re-imagining of Holmes or, at worse, a pastiche of Doyle's Holmes stories. I won't say that some surprises ruin the novel. Rather, the novel seems to be one thing, before the author, Anthony Horowitz, changes its fundamental nature.
So, most of the novel is exceptionally entertaining. The rest of it strikes an odd note. Still, I want to see where Horowitz takes his ideas and concepts, so I recommend that you read this now for what may very well come later. Fans of Sherlock Holmes and of Victorian mysteries will want to find Moriarty: A Novel.

Wayward #5 arrives in comic book shops today (Wednesday, December 17, 2017). It is the conclusion of the series' first story arc (“String Theory”). Wayward is the creation of writer Jim Zub and penciller Steve Cummings. Published by Image Comics, Wayward focuses on Rori Lane, a half-Irish/half-Japanese teen girl. Rori is trying to start a new life in Japan with her mother, Sanae, only to find herself connected to the magic and ancient creatures that lurk in the shadows of Tokyo.
Wayward #5 (“Chapter Five”) opens after the battle in the decommissioned subway tunnels beneath Ueno Park. Rori and her “gang” of fellow supernatural types, Ayane, Shirai, and Nikaido narrowly defeated a band of monsters. Rori discovered, however, from the leader of their attackers, that all was not what it seemed. Now, Rori races home, sensing that her mother, Sanae, is in danger. It is actually worse and more complicated that she imagines.
As with previous issues, the ComicBookBin received an advanced review PDF copy of Wayward #5 that writer Jim Zub sent to reviewers. This fifth issue is also the close of the series' first story arc. Wayward is going on a two-month hiatus and will return in March 2015.
Zub and Cummings leave us with a beautifully drawn and exceptionally told series, and while they leave us with many questions, they also leave us caught in the weave. We want to be Wayward. With each new issue, Wayward expands its scope without losing its great sense of mystery. With similarities to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, yokai manga, and Harry Potter, Wayward is that amazing new fantasy series we've been waiting for DC Comics' Vertigo imprint to give us. Instead, Jim Zub, Steve Cummings, and Image Comics have given it to us. Gimme more.

Angela created by Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman
Angela: Asgard's Assassin is a new comic book series launched as part of Marvel Comics' “Avengers NOW!” initiative. The series features a character that was not originally a Marvel Comics character.
Angela is a comic book character created by writer Neil Gaiman and artist Todd McFarlane. She first appeared in Spawn #9 (cover dated: March 1993) as a supporting character and adversary. Published by Image Comics, Spawn was McFarlane's creator-owned series, and Angela was later the subject of a protracted legal battle between McFarlane and Gaiman.
Gaiman eventually won the rights to the character and transferred those rights to Marvel Comics. Angela's Marvel debut was in the event miniseries, Age of Ultron (#10; cover dated: June 2013). Angela's origin and purpose were changed from what they were in Spawn. In the Marvel Universe, Angela was revealed to be Aldrif, the daughter of Odin (King of Asgard) and his wife, Frigga, which makes her the sister of Thor and Loki. Once believed to have been murdered, Angela is now “the deadliest warrior in all the Ten Realms.”
Angela: Asgard's Assassin #1 finds Angela walking through the desert of Limbo, facing down hordes, and carrying... a baby?! Plus, her partner, Sera, tells a tale of Angela's past.
Hmmm... Wow... Over two decades later, Angela belongs to another publisher, yet the new publisher releases an Angela comic book that seems as if it were produced by the old publisher 20 years ago. By that, I mean pretty art, underwhelming story.
Phil Jimenez and the great inker, Tom Palmer, deliver stellar art, creating a tale that looks like a bizarre melding of J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert E. Howard. The gor-to-the-geous colors by Romulo Fajardo make the main story of Angela: Asgard's Assassin seem like a piece straight out of classic Heavy Metal. However, the story does nothing for me, and I am not even interested in trying to talk about it.
The side story by writer Marguerite Bennett and artist Stephanie Hans is better. It is a familiar story type, and with its pretty art, it also recalls Marvel's old Epic Magazine. That said, I can't see myself reading future issues of Angela: Asgard's Assassin.

I Reads You Review: SUPERGIRL #36
SUPERGIRL #36
DC COMICS – @DCComics
WRITERS: K. Perkins and Mike Johnson
PENCILS: Emanuela Lupacchino
INKS: Ray McCarthy
COLORS: Hi-Fi
LETTERS: Dezi Sienty
COVER: Emanuela Lupacchino with Dan Brown
32pp, Color, $2.99 U.S. (January 2015)
Supergirl based on the characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
“Crucible” Part 1
DC Comics character, Supergirl, is essentially the female counterpart of Superman. The most familiar version of the character is Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who was created by writer Otto Binder and designed by artist Al Plastino. She first appeared in Action Comics #252 (cover date May 1959), although there were two earlier versions of the character that appeared in 1949 and in 1958.
I have not read a Supergirl comic book since I read The New 52's Supergirl #1 (“Last Daughter of Krypton”) just over three years ago. I recently visited an area comic book shop where the owner likes to hand out free comic books to her customers. That's how I ended up with my first Supergirl comic book in years, besides the Supergirl trade paperback I bought my niece several months ago.
Supergirl #36 (“Crucible” Part 1) opens in the aftermath of Kara's shenanigans with the Red Lanterns (of which I am not familiar). She is living in New York City and working at Elixir Cafe. Kara just wants to live on Earth among the regular folks. Her cuz, Clark Kent a/k/a Superman, makes a surprise appearance, with the intent of giving some big brother-type advice to Kara. However, he also was involved in some shenanigans (regarding the Doom virus), so maybe he can use some advice, too. The real lessons for Kara/Supergirl, however, will come from the Crucible Academy, courtesy of three super-powered aggressors.
I probably would have kicked Supergirl #36 to the curb by placing it in a pile of unread comic books, due for removal at a later date. But I took one quick look inside and was immediately impressed by the eye-candy art from the team of penciller Emanuela Lupacchino, inker Ray McCarthy, and colorist Hi-Fi. Lupacchino is a skilled hand at compositions, and her figure drawing is strong. McCarthy's inks give the art an Adam Hughes quality, creating a light-hearted approach to the story that captures Kara as a young woman in flux. Hi-Fi's candy-painted hues bring the alien environments in the second half of the story to life.
Wow! Surprised! Supergirl #36 has tempted me to read more. Maybe I shouldn't ignore Supergirl.

Review: MILLENNIUM SNOW Volume 4
MILLENNIUM SNOW, VOL. 4
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia
CARTOONIST: Bisco Hatori
TRANSLATION/ENGLISH ADAPTATION: John Werry
LETTERS: Annaliese Christman
ISBN: 978-1-4215-7246-8; paperback (December 2014); Rated “T” for “Teen”
200pp, B&W, $9.99 U.S., $12.99 CAN, £6.99 UK
Millennium Snow, the acclaimed shojo manga by Bisco Hatori, concludes with the publication of the series' fourth graphic novel. Mixing comedy, romantic drama, and a little of the paranormal, the finale resolves the still-born romance between a human and a vampire.
Millennium Snow focuses on 17-year-old Chiyuki Matsuoka. She was born with heart problems, and her doctors say she will not live to see the next snow. Toya Kano is an 18-year-old vampire who hates blood. He also refuses to make the traditional, symbiotic partnership with a human, whose life-giving blood would keep them both alive for a thousand years. Chiyuki has already told Toya that she likes him, but he hasn't yet agreed to make her his partner.
As Millennium Snow, Vol. 4 (Chapters 14 to 16 to Last Chapter) opens, Chiyuki, Toya, and their friends enter their last year of high school. Now, Toya faces the prospect of supporting himself for the rest of his long life. Satsuki Ariyoshi, the werewolf boy, may have a job for Toya at his family's shop, Ariyoshi Goods.
Meanwhile, an important figure from Toya's past returns, as we learn more about Toya's family. Then, a stranger arrives, and his story may be giving Toya second thoughts about Chiyuki.
The Millennium Snow manga was one of the first VIZ Media titles that I reviewed, and that was a little over seven years ago (!). This series is the creation of mangaka Bisco Hatori, who also created the hit comedy manga, Ouran High School Host Club.
Apparently, Bisco Hatori put Millennium Snow on hiatus after finishing the episodes that were collected in the second volume of the graphic novel collection. At some point, she resumed work on the series. VIZ reprinted Volumes 1 and 2 in a 2-in-1 mini-omnibus edition around the time it also published new material as Millennium Snow Vol. 3.
Millennium Snow Volume 4 is the final volume of the series. Having read Vol.4, after only reading the first volume seven years ago, I thought that I might be confused by the final volume, especially considering that I had not read the second and third volumes. I was not. Millennium Snow is basically simple. Vampire guy does not want to bite human girl who loves him, although that will give both of them a long, long life. The romantic dilemmas and tension are built around him playing hard to get and her chasing him.
It works because Hatori depicts conflicts and struggles and feelings and emotions in a way that are universal to shojo manga. I enjoyed reading it because, even as a fantasy, Millennium Snow is heartfelt and feels genuine. I might even try to read the entire series at some later date.
