#IReadsYou Review: YONA OF THE DAWN Volume 22

YONA OF THE DAWN, VOL. 22
VIZ MEDIA – @VIZMedia

MANGAKA: Mizuho Kusanagi
TRANSLATION: JN Productions
ENGLISH ADAPTATION: Ysabet Reinhardt MacFarlane
LETTERS: Lys Blakeslee
EDITOR: Amy Yu
ISBN: 978-1-9747-1108-6; paperback (February 2020); Rated “T” for “Teen”
192pp, B&W, $9.99 U.S., $12.99 CAN, £6.99 UK

Yona of the Dawn is a Japanese shojo manga series written and illustrated by Mizuho Kusanagi.  It has been serialized in Hakusensha's shojo manga magazine, Hana to Yume, since August 2009.  VIZ Media has been publishing an English-language edition of the manga as a paperback graphic novel series since August 2016 under its “Shojo Beat” imprint.

Yona of the Dawn focuses on the only princess in the Kingdom of Kohka, Yona.  She lives an ideal life, and her father, King Il, dotes on her.  Her faithful guard, Son Hak of the Wind Tribe, protects her.  Yona even cherishes the time spent with the man she loves, her cousin, Lord Su-won of the Sky Tribe.  However, everything changes for Princess Yona on her 16th birthday when the king is killed, and Hak is blamed.  Soon, Yona is on the run with Hak, but she is determined to reclaim her throne.  To do so, she begins a journey to find the Four Dragon Warriors.

As Yona of the Dawn, Vol. 22 (Chapter 124 to 129) opens, the battle against the Nation of Sei and its treacherous nobles, Lord Hotsuma and Lord Kishibi, has ended in defeat for Sei.  Yona and Princess Riri of the Water Tribe have been rescued, and now, is the time for reunions and revelations.  For instance, Riri has a crush on a military leader … who is also a married man!  Meanwhile, is Yona ready to admit her feelings for Hak?

Later, Yona, Hak, the Four Dragon Warriors (Gija, Jaeha, Sinha, and Zeno), and Jun travel to the Nation of Xing, where trouble brews.  It seems that Princess Kouren, leader of Xing, is preparing to start a war against Kohka.  Her younger sister, the exiled Princess Tao, would prefer that Xing become a vassal state of Kohka.  Tao hopes that Yona and the Dragon Warriors, whom she believes to be beautiful and fierce monsters, can make that happen.  So what will Yona do, and can a decision come in time with all their lives in danger?

THE LOWDOWN:  It has been exactly a half-year since I last read the Yona of the Dawn manga.  I find historical shojo romance manga to be a highly enjoyable read,  The series belongs to one of my favorite shojo sub-genres, the manga that use elements of Chinese history and myth.

Yona of the Dawn Graphic Novel Volume 22 says goodbye, for the time being, to Princess Riri and the Water Tribe.  Creator Mizuho Kusanagi briefly delves into the relationship between Yona and Hak, while delivering readers a surprising development in the life of Yona.  Then, Kusanagi does what she does best – insert Yona into another conflict in which she must help a troubled young noble woman.  Of course, Yona is this series' most troubled young novel woman.  This manga may seem repetitive, at times, but it tells an absorbing story with lovable characters.

Yet, JN Productions (translation) and Ysabet Reinhardt MacFarlane (English adaptation) never make it boring.  Their work makes us want to follow Yona once more into the breach and the lovely lettering by Lys Blakeslee creates the sense of a magical romantic adventure.  Once again, dear readers, I highly recommend that you also follow Yona.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of historical romantic adventure will want to try the “Shojo Beat” title, Yona of the Dawn.

“Burn Baby Burn” Part III: “The Dance of Death”

Published by Image Comics, Killadelphia is a comic book series from writer Rodney Barnes and artist Jason Shawn Alexander.  At the center of this series is a police officer caught in a lurid conspiracy in which vampires attempt to rule Philadelphia, “the City of Brotherly Love.”  Colorist Luis Nct and letterer Marshall Dillon complete Killadelphia's creative team.

Killadelphia focuses on James “Jim” Sangster, Jr., who came home to Philly to deal with the final affairs of his recently murdered father, revered Philadelphia homicide detective, James Sangster, Sr.  Not dead, but undead, the father joined the son, the chief medical examiner (Jose Padilla), and a rebellious vampire to lead the battle that saves “the City of Brotherly Love” from a vampire apocalypse.  But that was just the first battle, and this is a war.

Killadelphia #9 (“The Dance of Death”) opens with family dysfunction as Big (dead) Jim and Li'l (alive) Jim squabble.  Meanwhile, Abigail Adams reveals her plans for Philadelphia, and her leanings are a bit different and bit more aristocratic than that of her late, late husband, John Adams' ambitions.  Plus, the origin of Jupiter Evans, who went from faux-friend and plaything of Thomas Jefferson to put-upon property of a “Founding Father,” is revealed.

THE LOWDOWN:  As I wrote before, Killadelphia's first story line, “Sins of the Father,” was and still is quite fantastic. However, the second and current story line, “Burn Baby Burn” is an even more intense reading experience.  I am shocked by what writer Rodney Barnes is delivering in Killadelphia, probably the most imaginative vampire comic book since Marvel Comics' Tomb of Dracula, which had its bloody heyday back in the 1970s.

I am also impressed at how Barnes has kept the Sangster boys' relationship fresh and vital... and full of vim, vigor, and vinegar.  The complications of old family strife and of assorted cracks in the foundation of a family give this story dramatic heft.

Artist Jason Shawn Alexander's art sets Barnes' passions of his characters aflame.  Alexander's illustrations explode off the page, with the contributions of colorist Luis Nct.  Alexander's graphical storytelling turns Barnes' script into a comic book that will eventually burn the readers' hands and ignite their imaginations.  Plus, Killadelphia #9 offers a suite of Alexander's lovely art as an extra.

As letterer Marshall Dillon scores the vampire apocalypse with his fonts as musical notes, we say goodbye to another issue of Killadelphia... reluctantly.  It is one of the best comic books out today – whether the Eisner and Harvey Awards realize that or not.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of vampire comic books and of exceptional dark fantasy will want Killadelphia.

HOME SICK PILOTS #1

STORY: Dan Watters
ART: Caspar Wijngaard
COLORS: Caspar Wijngaard
LETTERS: Aditya Bidikar

COVER: Caspar Wijngaard
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Caspar Wijngaard; Dani
28pp, Colors, 3.99 U.S.(December 2020)

Home Sick Pilots created by Dan Watters and Caspar Wijngaard

Home Sick Pilots is a new comic book series created by writer Dan Watters and artist Caspar Wijngaard, the creative team of the comic book, Limbo.  Home Sick Pilots apparently focuses on a group of teens and a haunted house with an evil mind of its own.  Letterer Aditya Bidikar and designer Tom Muller complete the series' creative team.

Home Sick Pilots #1 opens in Santa Manos, California, July 18, 1994.  A haunted house known as “the old James house” walks across California, and inside is Ami, the lead singer of the high school punk band, “Home Sick Pilots.”  Ami has been missing for weeks, so how did she get in the old James house.  It has ghosts, so what do those ghosts want?  And can Ami's band mates, Buzz and Rip, find her?

THE LOWDOWN:  I want to be careful and not provide spoilers for the first issue of Home Sick Pilots.  I can say that I find that this first issue suggests Home Sick Pilots has potential.  I will also go on record as saying that Home Sick Pilots #1 is a tad bit stronger than other recent debut series from Image Comics, including Rick Remender's The Scumbag and Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw's Crossover.

Caspar Wijngaard's art and colors for Home Sick Pilots #1 is both haunting and alluring, and his graphical storytelling grabs at me.  I don't think that I have ever read anything written by Dan Watters, but this first issue, which gives out information as much as it teases, makes me want to search out more of his work.  So many first issues now tease and hint, whereas Watters seems to be giving out much, if not most, of the premise in this first issue.

Aditya Bidikar's lettering is solid and hard-hitting, which gives the story power from the first page.  Tom Muller's design splashes cool rather than faux-punk aesthetics, so this book looks good, but has substance.   I certainly want to read the second issue, and I highly recommend you give this first issue a try, dear readers.  It is a new kind of haunted house story at a time when comic books need new kinds of hauntings.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of offbeat and imaginative supernatural comic books will want to fly with the Home Sick Pilots.

Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl created by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.

Kick-Ass is a comic book series created by writer Mark Millar and artist John Romita, Jr.  The initial Kick-Ass comic books were published by Marvel Comics' “Icon” imprint, before the series moved to Image Comics.  Kick-Ass is now known as Kick-Ass: The Dave Lizewski Years, and is comprised of four book collections (or graphic novels)

Kick-Ass #1 (cover dated: April 2008) introduced Dave Lizewski, a teenager who becomes a real life superhero.  Dave takes the name “Kick-Ass,” and his superhero activities are publicized on the Internet and inspire other people to become like him.  Dave eventually gets caught up with the ruthless father-daughter vigilante duo, “Big Daddy”/Damon McCready and “Hit-Girl”/Mindy McCready (both introduced in Kick-Ass #3 – cover dated July 2008).  The McCreadys are on a mission to take down the Genovese crime family.

Kick-Ass 2018 (now known as Kick-Ass: The New Girl) introduced a new Kick-Ass.  She was Patience Lee, an Afghanistan war veteran who returned home to Albuquerque, New Mexico and discovered that her husband had left her and also had run up large debts.  Taking on the Kick-Ass identity, Patience started off stealing cash from neighborhood criminals before eventually killing off the local boss and his gang and taking over his operations as the new crime boss, using the name, “Kick-Ass.”

Hit-Girl now travels the world doing her own thing in her own comic books.  But it is time for Kick-Ass/Patience Lee and Hit-Girl to finally meet, and they do so in the new comic book miniseries, Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl.  It is written by Steve Niles; drawn by Marcelo Frusin; colored by Sunny Gho; and lettered John Workman, with original Kick-Ass artist, John Romita, Jr. providing cover art.

Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl #1 opens in the aftermath of Patience killing her brother-in-law, her sister's husband, Maurice.  At Maurice's funeral, Patience does a lot of thinking, and she decides to destroy the criminal empire that she has built.  But not everyone agrees with that move.  Elsewhere, a young killer makes her noisy arrival in Albuquerque, NM.

THE LOWDOWN:  I am a fan of the Kick-Ass comic book franchise, especially of the comic books produced by both Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr.  I think that the original Kick-Ass series is a revolutionary moment in superhero comic books, probably the biggest shift since the dawn of Marvel Comics in 1961 with the publication of The Fantastic Four #1.  For one thing, Kick-Ass liberated superhero comic books of nostalgia and sentimentality.  This was the first step in creating a comic book that convincingly depicts what it might be like if superheroes existed in our real world.

The post Millar-Romita, Jr. Kick-Ass comic books are entertaining, but they read more like Vertigo crime and hard-boiled comic books than like Kick-Ass superhero comic books.  In this first issue, Marcelo Frusin's graphical storytelling is stylish and fast-moving, filled with edgy drama and hard-hitting violent action.  Writer Steve Niles builds the first issue on anticipation.  He offers a simmer that the readers know will result in explosive, but pivotal violence; readers just have to wait.

The colors by Sunny Gho throb and sometimes take on a neon quality.  The coloring gives this story's edginess a moody filter.  Meanwhile, John Workman does what the best letterers have been doing for decades – create the illusion of an audio track so that a comic book, in this case, Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl #1, is a thing of sound and graphics.

So, what is the verdict on Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl #1?  Well, I'd like to be cynical, but by the time I reached the last page, I really wanted more.  And I shall come back for more

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Kick-Ass comic books will want to try Kick-Ass vs. Hit-Girl #1.
