HARVEYS - From PW:  The nominations for the 2024 Harvey Awards have been announced.  The winners will be announced Friday, October 8th, at New York Comic Con 2024.

DC ANIMATED - From DCBlog:  DC Comics and Warner Bros. can't stop banging the chicken that is Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' "Watchmen." The people behind the "Watchmen" animated film talk about it.

MANGA - From BleedingCoolMad Cave Studios has announced the launch of "Nakama Press," a new imprint dedicated to publishing manga (Japanese comics), manhwa (Korean comics), manfra (French manga), and manhua (Chinese comics) from around the world.

COMICS - From BleedingCoolThe Utah State Board of Education has banned cartoonist Craig Thompson's 2003 graphic novel, Blankets, from Utah public school classrooms and libraries.  Originally published by Top Shelf Productions, Thompson won two 2004 Eisner Awards ("Best Writer/Artist" and "Best Graphic Album") for "Blankets."

IDW - From AEIndex:  Editor Scott Dunbier talks about the newly released "Batman: Year One Artist's Edition" with Scott VanderPloeg.

COMICS - From YouTube:  There is a trailer for the podcast audio drama, "The Department of Midnight," which is created, written, and co-produced by award-winning comic book writer, Warren Ellis. The first episode debuts August 20, 2024 where you find podcasts.

EN MEMORIAM - From BleedingCool:  Comic book writer and editor, Joyce Brabner, has died at the age of Thursday, August 1, 2024.  Brabner is best known for her association with her late husband, the writer-publisher, Harvey Pekar (1939-2010), and his comic book, "American Splendor."  Brabner also edited Eclipse Comics' anthology, "Real War Stories" (1987-91). She also co-wrote with Alan Moore the 1988 graphic novel, "Brought to Light" (1988).

MARVEL COMICS - From THR:  Legendary former Marvel editor-in-chief and writer, Roy Thomas, explains why his name should be first among the creators of Wolverine.

DC ANIMATION -  From TheWrapBruce Timm talks about how his reluctance to do new episodes of his beloved TV animated series, "Batman: The Animated Series," led to the creation of the new animated series, "Batman: Caped Crusader." The first two episodes of the new series debut on Amazon Prime, Thurs., Aug. 1st.

COMICS - From ComicBook:  Superstar comic book artist and former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada has started his own comic book imprint, "Amazing Comics."  It will be a join venture between Mad Cave Studios and European publishing power, Dupuis.  The imprint's first title will be "Disciple," co-written and drawn by Quesada.

NEWS:

DC STUDIOS - From YouTube:  The Flash - Official Trailer #2. The film is due June 16th.

EN MEMORIAM - From TheDailyCartoonist:  American cartoonist Ted Richards has died at the age of 76, Friday, April 21, 2023.  Richards was best known for his work in Underground Comix.  He was a member of the "Air Pirates" collective, whose "Air Pirates Funnies" comic book got them sued by Walt Disney Productions.  Richards produced such titles as "Dopin' Dan," "E.Z. Wolf," and "The Forty Year Old Hippie." Richards would later move into computer software designing.

IDW - From ComicsBeat:  IDW Media Holdings, Inc., parent of IDW Publishing, has been delisted from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), although I didn't know they were listed.  39 percent of the staff have been laid off, including the entire PR and marketing department and also publisher Nachie Marsham.

From BleedingCool:  IDW CEO Davidi Jonas says "today we hit reset," as the company undergoes layoffs.

IMAGE - From ScreenRant:  Todd McFarlane's "Spawn" will crash Rodney Barnes and Jason Shawn Alexander's "Killadelphia," beginning with the next story arc that begins in Killadelphia #31.

DC ANIMATION - From Deadline:  Amazon's "Prime Video" Warner Bros. Batman animated series, including Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves' "Batman: Caped Crusader."

EN MEMORIAM - From TCJ:  Author Andrew Farago offers an obituary of comics historian, author, editor and curator, Maurice C. Horn, passed away on December 30, 2022, at the age of 91.  According to Farago, Horn wrote some of the first reference books about comics ever written and he was among the very first people to take comics seriously.  His books include "A History of the Comic Strip" (1968), written with Pierre Couperie, "The World History of Comics" (1976), and "Sex in the Comics" (1985), to name a few.

MILESTONE - From DimesDaggers:  Writer Andrew Farago looks back at the 30th anniversary of Milestone Comics in "How 'Hardware' Made Me WOKE."

SONY MARVEL U - From Variety:  At CinemaCon 2023, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson introduced footage for Sony Pictures' Marvel Comic film, "Kraven the Hunter."  The footage, which featured some bloody images, was reportedly well-received.  The film, which will debut later this year, will also be rated "R."

DC COMICS - From DCBlog:  Author Rachel Allan talks to "DC Blog" about her new original graphic novel, "Harley Quinn: Ravenous."

DC STUDIOS - From YouTube:  The studio has provided an "in-production teaser" and first-look at the upcoming series, "The Penguin," starring Colin Farrell.

MARVEL - From BleedingCool:  After his "Gambit" and "X-Treme X-Men" mini-series, Chris Claremont is already working on his next X-Men comic book.

SONY MARVEL U - From Deadline:  Actress Juno Temple (of Apple's "Ted Lasso" series) has landed the lead in Sony/Marvel's "Venom 3."

IDW - From BleedingCool:  Here is the checklist for IDW Publishing's "Star Trek" crossover event, "Day of Blood," which runs through Star Trek titles from July to Sept. 2023.

MARVEL COMICS - From Marvel:  Writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Todd Nauck will return to X-Men villain Magneto's days as headmaster of The New Mutants in the four-issue miniseries, "Magneto."  The first issue is due Aug. 2nd.

MARVEL STUDIOS - From CBR:  Hot rumor says that Oscar-nominated actor Adam Driver is in final negotiations to play "Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic" in Marvel Studios' planned "Fantastic Four" film.

From Newsarama:  According to "Deadpool" star, Ryan Reynolds, the "Wolverine" that Hugh Jackman will play in "Deadpool 3" is "something completely new."

DC COMICS TO SERIES - From GamesRadar:  Jim Mickle, the showrunner for Netflix's "Sweet Tooth," which is based on Jeff Lemire's comic book series, will have a more ambitious second season.

DC COMICS - From BleedingCool:  Here is a look at the new character designs for DC Comics' "Knight Terrors" event, which takes over the publishing line this July and August.

MANGA TO LIVE-ACTION - From CBR:  The site is reporting that Netflix held a private screening of its live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's legendary shonen manga, "One Piece."  The preview apparently flopped with that test audience.

MARVEL - From Newsarama:  Canadian super-team, Alpha Flight, returns to Canada and into their own comic book series, "Alpha Flight," written by Ed Brisson and artist Scott Godlewski.  The first issue this "Fall of X" X-Men spinoff is due August 16th.

From Newsarama:  Another "Fall of X" spinoff from the "X-Men" is the miniseries, "Children of the Vault."

RETAIL - From TCJ:  Venerable and maybe even legendary comic book and collectibles retailer, Chuck Rozanski of "Mile High Comics," tells his side of the story to "The Comics Journal."

EN MEMORIAM - From Deadline:  "MAD Magazine" cartoonist Al Jaffee has died at the age of 102, Monday, April 10, 2023.  Jaffee was a Mad contributor for 65 years.  His career as a cartoonist, running from 1942 to 2020, holds the "Guinness World Record" for the longest.  Jaffee was high school classmate of future comic book and cartooning legends, Will Elder, Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and John Severin, at the High School for Music & Arts in New York City.

EN MEMORIAM - From BleedingCool:  Science fiction and fantasy author, comic book writer, and tarot card expert, Rachel Pollack, has died at the age of 75, Friday, April 7, 2023.  Her novel, "Godmother Night," won the 1997 "World Fantasy Award for Best Novel."  In comic books, she is best known for her 1996-95 run on DC Comics' "Doom Patrol" series (issues #64-#87).  Her "78 Degrees of Wisdom" is reference for Tarot readers.

DC STUDIOS/TRAILERS - From YouTube:  Here is the first trailer for DC Studios' "Blue Beetle" film, which is due in theaters, August 18, 2023.

DC STUDIOS - From THR:  "Joker: Folie a Deux" has wrapped up filming.  Director Todd Phillips shares new images of its stars, Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.  The film is due Oct. 4th, 2024.

COMICS TO TV - From DeadlineSony Pictures Television is developing the Black Mask graphic novel, "Destiny, NY," by Pat Shand and Manuel Preitano, for television.

BOOM STUDIOS - From Variety:  Actress Amy Jo Johnson and her partner, Matt Hotson, will write a "Power Rangers" comic book that will debut next year.  Johnson played "Kimberly Hart," the original "Pink Power Ranger" in the 1993-95 original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" TV series and in two films.

COMICS TO ANIME - From Variety:  Netflix is producing an anime series version of the "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley.  Multiple cast members from 2010 live-action film, "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" will be voice performers for the anime.

MANGA TO FILM - From GamesRadarFangoria Studios is set to adapt some of manga master, Junji Ito's horror manga short stories into movies, including the vampire tale, "Bloodsucking Darkness."

AMAZON - From THR:  Former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief and Marvel Entertainment CCO, Joe Quesaada, has signed a first-look deal with Amazon.  He will develop established and new comic book properties for film and television.

DC COMICS - From DCBlog:  Acclaimed writer G. Willow Wilson talks about her "Poison Ivy" comic book series and about the new miniseries, "Lazarus Planet: Revenge of the Gods."

EN MEMORIAM - From CBR:  The American comic book writer, Steve Skeates, has died at the age of 80, Thursday, March 30, 2023.  Skeates was best known for co-creating the DC Comics characters, "Hawk and Dove" with the late artist, Steve Ditko.  Skeates also produced a noted run on "Aquaman" (1968-71) with artist Jim Aparo.

MARVEL - From CBR:  There will be a new ongoing comic books series starring Marvel Comics' ultimate vampire hunter, "Blade."  The new series is written by Bryan Edward Hill and drawn by Elena Casagrande and is due July 2023.

LGBTQ+ - From BleedingCool:  The Virginia obscenity lawsuit brought against Maia Kobabe's graphic novel, "Gender Queer," has been dismissed.  It had been brought by two GOP Virginia politicians.

BOOK NEWS - From TheWrap:  The publication of the book version of author Dinesh D'Souza's propaganda film, "2000 Mules," has been delayed.

IMAGE - From ScreenRant:  "Killadelphia" and "Nita Hawes' Nightmare Blog" writer, Rodney Barnes, talked to "Screen Rant" at SDCC 2022 in an interview just published.

EN MEMORIAM - From CBR:  Pioneering female comic book artist, Lily Renee, has died at the age of 101, Wednesday, August 24, 2022.  In the late 1930s, the Jewish Lily escaped Nazi-occupied Vienna, Austria to England.  Later, she immigrated to the United States and began working for as a penciller and inker for the comic book publisher, Fiction House.  She later drew for St. John Publications, drawing romance comics for them. She may be the first female artist to have a successful career in comic books.

COMICS TO FILM - From THR:  Veteran actor Danny Huston has joined the film version of the comic book, "The Crow."  Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film is currently in production in the Czech Republic.

DC CINEMA - From THREzra Miller, the embattle actor and star of the DC Comics film, "The Flash," has apparently met with Warner Bros. film executives to apologize, reassure, yadda, yadda, yadda....

NETFLIX/SANDMAN - From DCBlog:  Composer David Buckley talks about scoring Netflix's "The Sandman" series.

From VarietyNeil Gaiman talks about sabotaging super-producer Jon Peters' planned film adaptation of the "The Sandman" by leaking its "really stupid" script to rumor site, "Ain't It Cool News."

DC FILMS - From DeadlineDan Lin, "Lego" film franchise producer, may be in the lead to lead DC Films.

DC CINEMA/BATGIRL - From THR:  Apparently, there have been secret screenings of "Batgirl" going on at the Warner Bros. lot.  Known as "funeral screens," they are reportedly for cast and crew of the film and select executives and representatives.  After this, "Batgirl" will be put in a vault, either physical or digital.

From Deadline:  "Batgirl" actress, Ivory Aquino, asks Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to considering releasing "Batgirl"... which is unlikely to happen

CARTOONS - From PressDemocrat:  82-year-old Jeannie Schulz, the widow of Charles M. Schulz, creator of "Peanuts," will receive the "Silver T-Square" from the National Cartoonists Society, the highest honor the society gives to a non-cartoonist.

BANNED NEWS - From BookRiot:  The site lists the 40+ most banned comics and graphic novels since the year 2000.

DC CINEMA/BATGIRL - From Variety:   Adil El Arbi and Billal Fallah, directors of the cancelled "Batgirl" film, says that they can no longer access footage of the film.

COMICS/OBIT - From TCJ:  Cartoonist and Curator of Cartoon Art Museum (San Francisco), Andrew Farago, offers an extended obituary of and feature article on the recently deceased cartoonist, Paul Coker, Jr (1929-2022).  The prolific and beloved cartoonist illustrated for "MAD Magazine," Hallmark Cards, and the Rankin/Bass animation studio, to name a few.

DC CINEMA - From THR:  Director Matt Reeves is writing the screenplay for "The Batman 2" (the sequel to this year's "The Batman") with Mattson Tomlin.

DC ANIMATION - From TVLineBruce Timm's previously announce Batman reboot animation projection, "Batman: Caped Crusader," has been cancelled by HBO Max along with five other animated projects.  All six projects, mostly from Warner Bros. Animation, will remain in development will they are shopped around to other outlets.

DC CINEMA - From THRWarner Bros. Discovery's trouble may go beyond cancelling "Batgirl" and may be raising antitrust red flags, in addition to upsetting consumers.

MARVEL STUDIOS - From Deadline:  "Thor: Love & Thunder" will make its Disney+ debut on Sept. 13th, which is also "Disney+ Day."

EN MEMORIAM - From BleedingCool:  The acclaimed and prolific comic book artist, Tom Palmer, Sr. has died at the age of 81, Thursday, August 18, 2022.  Palmer was best known as an "inker extraordinaire" for Marvel Comics.  He inked the pencil art of the legendary, late Neal Adams (who recently died) on titles such as "Avengers" and "X-Men;" John Byrne on "X-Men: The Hidden Years;" John Romita, Jr. on "Hulk," "Kick-Ass," and "Eternals," to name a few.  Palmer also inked the pencil art of Howard Chaykin, Walter Simonson, and Ron Frenz on Marvel Comics' original "Star Wars" comic book series.  Palmer inked the series more than anyone else and also drew several issues of the series himself.

DC COMICS - From CBR:  Jim Lee's original Image Comics' series, "WildC.A.T.S," gets its first new DC Comics' series in 12 years with a first issue from writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Stephen Segovia.

MARVEL - From CBR:  In November, Marvel Comics will publish "CrossGen Tales #1," which will collect four CrossGen #1 issues: "Ruse," "Mystic," "Sigil," and "Sojourn."

DC COMICS - From DCBlog:  Writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo tease the future of "Nightwing."

NETFLIX/SANDMAN - From DCBlogNeil Gaiman and Alan Heinberg talk about bringing Gaiman's classic comic book, "The Sandman" to the small screen at Netflix.

DC TV - From Deadline:  Actor Jordan Elsass will not return as "Jonathan Kent" for Season 3 of The CW's "Superman & Lois," so the role will be recast.

DC COMICS - From CBR:  DC Comics is launching a new "Justice Society of America" comic book series in November from writer Geoff Johns and artist Mikel Janin.

MARVEL - From Newsarama:  In November, "Fantastic Four" will launch with a new creative team, writer Ryan North and artist Iban Coello.

COMICS - From Forbes:  Small Florida based comic book publisher, Mad Cave Studios, has bought the larger, New York-based graphic novel publisher, Papercutz.

DC CINEMA - From Variety:  In the middle of so many legal issues, actor Ezra Miller, the lead in Warner Bros.' "The Flash," is seeking treatment for "complex mental health issues."

HELP - From BleedingCool:   Comic book writer Ivan Brandon ("NYC Mech," "Batman: Streets of Gotham") has suffered a heart attack and needs help paying his extensive medical bills.  So there is a GoFundMe page for him.

DC CINEMA - From IndieWire:  Star Dwayne Johnson explained why he fought to keep the character "Black Adam," out of what would become the 2019 "Shazam" movie.  The "Black Adam" film opens Oct. 21st, 2022.

BOOKS - From NPR:   Salman Rushdie, the 75-year-old Indian-born author who received death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked Friday morning (Aug. 12th) at Chautauqua Institution in New York by a man who rushed the stage where the author was to speak. Rushdie was transported to a local hospital by helicopter with an apparent stab wound to the neck, New York State Police said.

AWARDS - From TheBeat:  The nominations for the 2022 Harvey Awards have been announced.  The winners will be announced New York Comic Con 2022 (Oct. 6th to 9th) and will be livestreamed.

DC CINEMA - From Variety:  "Joker" actress Zazie Beetz is being considered to return for the sequel, "Joker: Folie a Deux."  In the first film, she played "Sophie Dumond," who Arthur Fleck/Joker fantasized about.

DC CINEMA - From VarietyEzra Miller, the actor who plays "The Flash" in Warner Bros.' DC Comics' films, has been charged with felony burglary in Stamford, Vermont.  He was issues a summons to appear in Vermont Superior Court on Sept. 26th.

DC CINEMA - From Variety:  Filmmaker and comic book writer, Kevin Smith, slams Warner Bros. Discovery for cancelling the "Batgirl" film and not "The Flash," which is scheduled for release next year and stars a controversial lead actor.

MARVEL - From ExpressUK:  Hollywood legend and Oscar-winning filmmaker, Clint Eastwood, apparently read comic books as a child and was a huge fan of "Namor, the Sub-Mariner."

COMICS - From BleedingCoolFrank Miller's publishing imprint, Frank Miller Presents, will publish its first "ashcan" comic in two weeks.  12,000 copies of the 32-page comic will be allocated to stores based on size.

DC FILMS - From THR:  DC Films president Walter Hamada was reportedly ready to leave his post after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav cancelled "Batgirl."  He has reportedly agreed to stay until Oct. 21st...

From THRWarner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav says that there will be a 10-year plan for developing film based on DC Comics characters. He said his is similar to the one used for Marvel Studios.

THE SANDMAN - From Variety:  In an interview, Neil Gaiman explains why the new Netflix adaptation of his beloved comic book, "The Sandman," has come to life after he has spent 30 years helping to block other adaptations.

DC CINEMA/JOKER - From Deadline:  The "Joker" sequel, "Joker: Folie a Deux," is set for a October 4, 2024.

MARK MILLAR - From CBRMark Millar is prepping a crossover comic book series, "Big Game," and X-Men star artist, Pepe Larraz, will draw it for him.  The series, which will involve many if not all Millarworld franchises, is due Spring 2023.

From CBR:  "Batman" comic book artist, Jorge Jimenez, will draw the sequel to Mark Millar and Steven McNiven's 2010 comic book, "Nemesis."  The new series will debut January 2023.

From CBRMark Millar has announced that all six issues of his upcoming vampire comic book series, "Night Club," will have a $1.99 cover price when it debuts Dec. 2023, the lowest in modern comics.

DC CINEMA/BATGIRL - From TheWrapWarner Bros. Discovery has stated that it will not release the nearly finished "Batgirl" film to theaters or on HBO Max.  Apparently, even after reshoots and a ballooning budget (90 million dollars), the film "does not work."

From Deadline:  Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has sent a message of support to "Batgirl" directors, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, in the wake of Batgirl's cancellation.  Arbi and Fallah directed two episodes of Marvel's recent "Ms. Marvel" series.

From THR:  The "Batgirl" cancellation is another setback for DC Comics films.
